This past holiday season was a joyous and lively time for the youth we serve thanks to many of our generous supporters and the funds raised from our holiday appeal. Here are just some of the highlights:

Those youth living on campus were treated to a holiday party in our gymnasium which featured a magician, comedian, and various animal acts, including world-famous Frisbee Dogs. After the festivities, each child received a gigantic Christmas stocking packed full of goodies courtesy of our generous Advisory Board members. On Christmas Day, our youth were invited to attend a private movie screening and lunch at a restaurant in downtown Los Angeles. This special Christmas Day wouldn’t have been possible without the generosity of Denise McCain-Tharnstrom and Charles Tharnstrom. Ona Wexler, Advisory Board Chair, continued a twenty-seven-year-old tradition of accompanying and sponsoring our female foster residents to dinner and a movie on Christmas Eve.

Just as he’s done for the past nine years, Ron Villachica, Governing Board member, hosted a New Year’s Eve party in our gymnasium on campus.

Valley View Church of the Nazarene continued their tradition of sponsoring a holiday party including a magnificent lunch and a visit from Santa with gifts in tow! All of our foster children and their foster parents, along with the biological children of our foster parents, were invited.

I cannot thank you all enough for your contributions. Because of our supporters, we were able to brighten the holidays for so many youth and families. I would also like to acknowledge and thank the S. Mark Taper, Rose Hills, and Parsons foundations for their very generous grants contributing to our general operating funds. These foundations have been long-time supporters of our organization. Foundations such as these not only believe in our mission but remain confident in supporting our organization due to our low administrative costs. Keeping costs low results in 87%+ of our total funds going directly to programs benefiting the many children and families we serve each year.

Enclosed in this edition is our 2018-2019 Annual Report which summarizes both programmatic and financial activity for the organization and is based on our independent auditor’s report.

As we usher in a new decade, I am delighted to welcome Annie Nuttall to our executive team as the new Chief Advancement and Communications Officer. Annie comes to us with several years of senior management experience in similar roles. I am also pleased to announce new management positions for three of our long-term staff members. David Tribbey, who has been with the agency for 30 years, has become the Director of the Foster Family and Adoptions Agency; Ninette Gharibian, LMFT, is now the Director of Residential Services; and Rima Salem, LMFT, was recently named the Director of Outpatient Mental Health Services. I feel confident they will all provide effective and innovative leadership to their departments.

As we move forward in the new year, I would like to thank all of our dedicated volunteers and supporters for their past support and hope they will continue in the future. I feel confident that this will be one of our best years yet.

“Thank you to all

the people who

came in my life and

served as Angels.

You are all amazing

at what you do.” -Estefany A.

At Optimist Charter School’s graduation and awards ceremony, students are recognized for their outstanding accomplishments. This winter, graduates delivered speeches in front of an audience of invited guests and the entire student body. One of the graduates, Estefany A., delivered a powerful and heartfelt commencement speech. She has graciously allowed us to share it with our Optimist family of supporters. A special thanks to the education staff who work so diligently for our students’ success.

First, I would like to thank God for giving me a second opportunity to rebuild my life. I would like to thank both my parents—my mom for not giving up on me and Dad for all his effort and love. I want to thank all my teachers, beginning from 3rd grade to now. Thank you to all the people who came in my life and served as Angels. You are all amazing at what you do.

My plans for the future are to attend trade school for mechanics, and then I would like to take a further step in my education and become a successful therapist to help kids both like yourself and myself.

My advice for everyone would be to find who you are. That way you don’t get misguided by everything that is out in this world. Love yourself enough to not be a product of your environment, use your anger, use your sensitivity, use your mouth, and use your fears to all make the best out of yourself. You guys might not understand my words right at this moment, but your heart will hear me.

Lastly, everything I’ve accomplished by far goes to my daughter because she deserves this and more.

-Estefany A.

67th Annual Optimist Festival of Trees raised $20,000 for Optimist Youth Homes & Family Services!

Our employees bring their best to work every single day!

STAFF HEROMaggie Williams

The Optimist Employee Service Awards Luncheon is held each year to honor dedicated staff members with many years of excellent service. We congratulate and thank our staff for a job well done! Congratulations

Wendy Escobar for being recognized as 2019 Optimist Employee of the Year.

“You have to love what you do to give your best to the children of Optimist!” - Maggie Williams

Anyone who meets Maggie Williams will tell you she is a true cheerleader for the agency.

Maggie began her career in 1989 as a childcare

worker in a group home setting and then later

transitioned to a certified nursing assistant.

Maggie joined Optimist as a childcare worker at

our Eagle Rock Group Home (today an STRTP) in

2011. In 2015, she was promoted to Group Home

Manager at our Mission Hills facility where she

continues to work today.

Maggie has demonstrated true “ownership”

of the house and cares for the residents as if

they were her own family. Said to be “firm but

fair,” Maggie is well respected for setting high

expectations for the team she manages and is

admired by the boys who have gone through

the program. She is also an excellent teacher.

In addition to be being an employee, Maggie

is also a donor, and she contributes to OYHFS

through our employee giving program. Recently,

she was nominated and selected as an “Optimist

Ambassador” due to her devotion, work ethic,

and genuine compassion for those we serve.

We now add to her praises by naming her as this

edition’s Staff Hero, an overdue honor!

Pacific Lodge really

was the foundation

I needed for growth,

discipline, education,

structure, and

guidance.

-Robert Lopez

Robert Lopez, known professionally as Robert Factor Former resident at our Pacific Lodge Campus 1966 - 1968.

Pacific Lodge gave me a sense of family, structure, and discipline that I didn’t have before.

As a kid, I always wanted to be a gangster like Al Capone, John Dillinger, or Bonnie & Clyde. I lived in South Central Los Angeles then moved to Pacoima and Van Nuys.

My mother had me when she was 16 and had four more kids in her 20’s. She was a kid trying to raise kids. She worked long hours and was married four times. I didn’t find out who my father was until I was in junior high school. He was in San Quentin prison and had been a heroin addict along with my uncle, step-father, and two of my brothers.

There was no discipline at home, and I really can’t remember having a birthday party as a kid. I was in my last semester of junior high when I came to live at Pacific Lodge. My mother’s boyfriend had promised her the world, but, of course, these promises were for her and not her kids. She placed us in foster care, and I ended up at Pacific Lodge (PL). The court promised my brother would be placed with me, but sadly that never happened.

I remember being lonely when “visiting Sunday” came around. I didn’t have many visits or “home trips.” It actually turned out to be a good thing because I got to go on camping trips and movie nights. I always loved the movies and still do.

Pacific Lodge gave me the discipline and structure I was lacking. To this day, I still make my bed first thing in the morning as we had to do here at the Lodge.

I was involved in sports while at PL and won the “Sportsmanship Award” and “Scholarship Award” for working hard and having the best grades my first year. I had a sense of “worth” again. I also joined the cast of a Christmas play. Before PL, I never would have imagined “acting” being part of my life.

I was fortunate enough to have a wonderful house “mother” and the boss man, Mr. Murphy (Murph). I really looked up to him. I worked in the kitchen making sandwiches for our lunches and also did a couple of jobs off grounds.

I ran away, and with another guy, I stole a car. We were caught, and I was subsequently sent to Sylmar Juvenile Hall. By the time I was released, I had lost what I had at PL. I continued to get into trouble, earned a nice little rap sheet, and had no direction. My life changed again when I had to take care of my 19-month-old baby sister who was left fatherless after my stepfather died of an overdose. I made a promise to her that I would no longer take drugs and would straighten out my life … which I did. After being told I was a “funny guy,” I enrolled at Valley College to see if I had any potential, and I fell in love with theatre. I’ve never looked back. Since then, I have acted in 97 plays, several films, and TV shows and written several plays, short films, and two feature films. I’ve also won multiple awards at film festivals for my acting, writing, and producing. I have also been writing poetry for years and picked up a few awards for that along the way as well.

I never thought about it much or even recognized what the Lodge did for me until I thought where I could have been today without it, or if I would even be around today. Pacific Lodge really was the foundation I needed for growth, discipline, education, structure, and guidance.

Optimist Youth Homes & Family Services has come a long way since our humble beginnings on the Strickland’s chicken ranch 114 years ago. Optimist’s programs have grown tremendously while staying true to our original purpose of providing high-risk children with not just a home, but hope. Since our inception, Optimist has continued its mission of providing innovative and individualized treatment, education, and support services to children, young adults, and families to better their lives.

Since entering its second century, Optimist has become one of the largest residential treatment programs serving high-risk youth in California. A non-profit 501(c)3 corporation, we provide the following comprehensive programs and services for at-risk children and families: Residential and Behavioral Care, Community Based Short-Term Residential Therapeutic Programs, a Charter School, Vocational Services, Cultural Arts, Community & Residential Mental Health Services, Mentoring, Family Finding, Foster Care & Adoption Services, Wraparound Services, and Aftercare. Our biggest accomplishment is making a difference in the lives of the youth we serve. Approximately 50% of our youth go on to attend classes at a college or vocational training school upon their graduation from our

charter high school. Optimist is a beacon of hope and opportunity, providing high-risk youth with the resources to rebuild their lives.

We are proud of our low administrative costs that are consistently 12% or less, meaning that 88% of funds received directly benefit the children and families served.

Our Programs & Services

Short-Term Residential Therapeutic Programs (STRTP’s): The main campus houses boys while our Pacific Lodge campus houses girls. Between the ages of 12 to 21, these youth are referred by probation and child welfare departments throughout the state. Therapists, counselors, and educators are assigned to each child and their families to craft individual treatment plans. The youth and their families are involved in therapies with a focus on Trauma Informed Care. Ancillary therapies are also available including art, movement, music, and pet therapies.

Therapeutic Behavioral Services (TBS): We offer one-on-one TBS to our clients to ensure that they can remain in the least restrictive environment possible and can transition between treatment levels when necessary.

Recreation and Leisure Activities: The Recreation Department provides a variety of on and off-grounds activities for the residents to teach them the meaning of healthy, pro-social leisure time activity.

Four Community Based Short-Term Residential Therapeutic Programs: Community-based STRTP’s throughout Los Angeles County (two of which are for girls) offer residents an alternative approach to living on the main campus. Some residents are graduates of our main campus who no longer need its more formal structure, thereby enabling a quick transition into mainstream community living.

Foster Care & Adoption Services: Our Foster Family & Adoption Agency (FFA) was established to find loving, safe, temporary and permanent homes for infants, children, and teens. Professional social workers and staff recruit, train, and certify foster and adoptive parents and provide regular follow-up care.

Mentoring: A caring, trusting relationship between a youth and an adult mentor can provide encouragement in all areas of a youth’s life. Mentors can provide tutoring and educational assistance, guiding higher educational and professional aspirations while modeling an appropriate, supportive adult figure.

Project Fatherhood: These support groups are designed to help fathers become more involved in their children’s lives. Residents who are fathers learn to develop strong paternal skills and the fathers or male role-models of our residents are also encouraged to attend. Additionally, there is a “Significant Others” group for relatives (aunts, grandparents, etc.) to foster improved relationships with the residents.

Optimist Charter School: Optimist Charter School is authorized by the Los Angeles County Office of Education, a member of LAC-SELPA, and is WASC accredited with a 10:1 student-teacher ratio. Special Education needs are respected, and students are offered academic classes and electives.

Family Finding: Children in the foster care system often feel completely alone. Our Family Finding Program attempts to locate, connect, and establish relationships that have been lost between foster children and relatives and may be able to provide new direction and stability to a child.

Mental Health Services: In partnership with the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health, we offer individual and family counseling sessions for our residential and foster family placed children and their families, as well as community-based services for children and families in need. Program graduates who reside in Los Angeles County receive follow-up via aftercare services.

Community Mental Health Programs: Optimist’s Community Mental Health Programs are in place to stabilize families and avoid institutional placement of their children. Clinics are located in Los Angeles, Woodland Hills, and Palmdale. We also offer treatment services to those incarcerated in L.A. County Juvenile Halls and provide comprehensive mental health services in several school settings.

Wraparound Program: Wraparound is a community-based program that utilizes a team approach from therapists, parent-partners, case managers, and facilitators to provide services in the home and community. This program attempts to do “whatever it takes” to support the child remaining in the home and with the family.

2020 OYHFS SPRING NEWSLETTER

I really enjoyed this DJ workshop. Thank you, Greg!!! -Optimist Resident

I first learned about Optimist when I was invited to attend a fundraising event, and I was convinced I needed to be involved in some way.

I was reminded of the everyday struggles I faced growing up and how those decisions can easily lead down the wrong path. When I was a teen, many of my friends went down the wrong path. Fortunately, at the age of 13, I was introduced to DJ’ing through my older brother. I truly believe it is what kept me out of trouble and also led me to who I am today.

I worked with the staff at Optimist to create a DJ workshop that would be a fun, hands-on experience for the youth. The workshop has been taking place weekly for over three months now, and attendance has grown each week. It has been such a rewarding experience for the students and for me. Due to my own personal experience, I relate to the challenges and pressures the students face, and I hope I can make a difference in their lives.

Greg, thank you very much for making a difference.

Greg is offering DJ classes to the boys at our main campus.

Woodland Hills Woman’s Club and Emmy award winning makeup artist, Shashana Kaplan offered a makeup class to the girls at our Pacific Lodge campus.

The 2019 holiday appeal was one of the most successful to date with over $131,200 raised. We are grateful to all our loyal and new supporters for including us in their year-end allocations.

Going above and beyondWe’re aware of how many organizations there are to choose from, and we are fortunate to have several donors fall under our Major Donor Category ($5,000+) for the 2019 calendar year. Thank you for believing so strongly in our mission so that we may continue helping as many at-risk youth and families as possible.
