Guruvayoor Utsavam, Maha Shivarathri

Guruvayoor Utsavam (Temple festival)Guruvayoor Utsavam will start soon. Utsava

kodiyettam (flag hoisting) is on Feb 28th

Wednesday and lasts for ten days. Aarattu is on

March 9th.

Utsavam is in effect the restoration of divine

chaithanya every year. It is aimed at the purification

and energisation of the deity.

Utsavam is a great time to be in Guruvayoor. There

will be various processions, annual elephant race, fire-works (no crackers/explosives

are used in Guruvayoor as baby Krishna does not like loud noise) and the temple and

surroundings will be illuminated nicely. All ten days, the place looks very festive,

streets dressed up with arches, festoons, houses freshly thatched and painted. Every

shrine and building is tastefully decorated with lights, plantain trunks, bunches of

coconut and arecanuts. The lamps, deepasthambams and vilakku are all lightened all

the days.

Maha Shivarathri

Maha Shivarathri is on February 16th. Vratham shall be observedon Shivarathri and many will not sleep all night but spend theirtime in naama sankeerthanam of “Om Nama Shivaya”.

Wish you all a very happy Shivarathri.

Akshardham temple, New Delhi. The temple on the left is Akshardham templein New Delhi. I visited the grand Akshardhamtemple last year. The temple has breath takinggrandeur and beauty and it brilliantlyshowcases India’s architecture, traditions andspiritual messages. The Akshardham experience is an enlighteningjourney indeed. I suggest anyone who visitDelhi to make sure that they visit this beautifulfive year old temple by Swaminarayans. More details can be found at the temple website - http://www.akshardham.com/

Mukundamala

by Kulasekhara Azvar

Collected by DR. SAROJA RAMANUJAM, M.A., PH.D, SIROMANI IN SANSKRIT.

ghushyathE yasya nagare rangayAthrA dhinE dhinE tham aham sirasA vandhE rAjAnam kulasekharam

I offer my salutations to the king Kulasekhara,in whose city the travel to Sriranga is extolled dayby day.

Kulasekhar was a king in ancient Chera nadu, modern Kerala. He was a great devotee of LordNarayana and he used to tell his subjects to be ready to go on pilgrimage to Srirangam anyday. The work Mukundamala, attributed to him, is a beautiful work in simple style and the slokasshould be recited by all vaishnavites for its meaning full of intense devotion. We will enjoy thenectar of bhakthi of this Mukundamala which is bhakthimala.

1.vandhE mukundham aravindhathalAythAksham kundhEndhu Sankha dhaSanam SiSunopavEsham indhrAdhidhEva gana vandhitha pAdhapeetam brindhAvanAlayam aham vasudhEva soonum

Salutations to Mukundha, the son of vasudeva, with eyes like lotus, teeth white like the conchand kundha flower, who appears in the form of a child, whose feet are worshipped by Indraand other devas, who resides in Brindavana.

Let us visualise the lotus-eyed vAsudeva as a child Krishna in Brindavana. He is Mukundha, the giver of moksha, whose feet are worshipped by all the devas , yet appears as an ordinarychild through His maya.He shows His teeth, white like kundha flower and like his conchPanchajanya, which is in contact with His teeth and hence shines white, mark of satthvaguNa.He is the father of all beings but appeared as the son of vasudeva, through His soulabhya, inorder to bless the ordiinary folk.Vedantadesika says in his yadhavabhyudhaya,He puts on different costumes and comes down as incarnations like an actor and He actsaccording to the role He assumes.

2. SrivallabhEthi varadhEthi dhayAparEthi bhakthapriyEthi bhavlunTanakOvidhEthi nATHEthi nagaSayanEthi jagannivAsEthi AlApinam prathipadham kuru mE mukundhaOh Mukundha, make me at every step utter your names,Srivallabha the Lord of Lakshmi,Varada, giver of boons, dhayApara, filled with mercy, bhakthapriya, dear to your devoteeswho are dear to you, bhavalunTana kOvidha, one who is skilled in taking away the samsarafrom His devotees,nAtha, Lord of the universe,nAgaSayana, on who reclines on Adisesha andjagannivAsa, one who is manifest all over the world.

To say the names of the Lord requires His grace. This is what Kulasekhara prays for, here. Oneman had many sons who were given the names of the Lord but he used to call them bynicknames, except the last , whom he named Narayana. He never thought of the Lord but wasin immersed in the worldly activities. When he was in his deathbed a well wisher asked him tosay the name of the Lord but he could not. Then he asked him the names of his sons but heuttered only the nicknames and he was sinking fast .As a last attempt the friend pointed out thelast son and asked the man who he was and the man said "He is my last son," and his life wentout. So in order to remember Him at the last moment start from now on and let us say,

Victory be to the Lord , the son of Devaki! Victory to Krishna , the bright light of the clan ofvrishnis! Victory to the one who has limbs tender and of dark hue like that of a cloud! Victory toMukundha who lightened the burden of the earth ( by ridding it of evil minded.)

One may doubt whether we can say 'victory to thee' to the Lord but it is quite appropriate as itmeans that may He succeed in winning our hearts by destroying our enemies that standbetween Him and us in the form of our past karma.

perspective of an average man of the world. He is emphasizing to Arjuna’s mind the consequences of his

failure to fight:

bhayaad ranaad uparatam mansyante twam Maha-rathaaha

yesham cha twam bahumato bhutva yaasyasi laaghavam ||2.35 ||

Mighty heroes such as Duryodhana will think that due to fear of Karna and others, you withdrew from

battle. Those heroes who esteemed you because of your virtues will now think less of you.

Here Krishna is driving home the point, that if Arjuna refuses to fight, the opponents are not going to see

any virtue in that, but will only consider it as a weakness or an act of cowardice from a hero. For a

warrior such a dishonor is extremely unbearable.

avaachya vaadamscha bahuna vadishyanti tava hitaaha

nindantas tava saamarthyam tato dukhataram nu kim || 2.36 ||

And your enemies will say many such unspeakable things. What can there be more painful than this?

The pain will be more unbearable when his enemies will criticize him in a language that is

indecent. As long as he lives, he will be pointed out as a hero who ran away from the battlefield.

Here, Krishna has put forth arguments in slokas 2.31-2.36, about the opinions of the world regarding

Arjuna’s actions simply to dispel the grief and confusion of Arjuna. These views and world opinions are

not to be considered as the goals themselves i.e. the message should not be taken here to suggest that

world views are to be entertained. The message is that: Do not act because the world wishes you to act in

a certain way or just because one believes that one’s actions are in accordance with world expectations.

These are just passing and temporary considerations. What is important is the understanding about the

one single truth or Absolute Reality.

tasmaad utishta Kaunteya yuddhyaya krutanischayaha || 2.37 ||

Slain, you will attain heaven, victorious-you will enjoy the earth; therefore stand up O son of Kunti

resolved to fight.

Because Arjuna is fighting on the side of truth, he stands to gain no matter the consequence of the war.

Even if he were to die, he would earn a place in heaven for his bravery and his virtues; if he were to win,

he could be lord on earth and then go to heaven as one who has spent his life fighting for the cause of

dharma.

sukha dukhe samey krutwa labha labho jayaa jayo

tatho yudhyaya yujyasva naivam paapam avaapsyasee || 2.38 ||

Looking with an equal eye on pleasure and pain, gain and loss, victory and defeat, strive to fight; thus

you will incur no sin.

Without getting attached to pleasure, and without developing an aversion or dislike for pain,

fight; similarly in the case of success and defeat. Then you will not incur sin.

Here Krishna suggests that Arjuna should enter the battlefield without worrying and be strong

with a steady mind in the face of all his anxieties.

Swami Chinmayanandji says that the three pairs--of pain and pleasure, gain and loss, and

conquest and defeat, exist at three levels of our existence, at the intellectual, mental, and physical level

respectively. Krishna says that we must develop a sense of equilibrium in all ups and downs at all three

levels. Swamiji also says that if one enters the sea waters, if one does not know how to swim, then mere

wishful thinking that the waves should not trouble one is not going to do any good. On the other hand, if

one can duck below the waves or jump over the smaller ones, then one can even enjoy the sea.

Human beings go through life expecting a no-wave situation most of the time and this is foolishness; if

one is living in the world, sorrows are bound to come; and these are bound to be followed by moments of

happiness. The best thing one can do is learn to have a steady mind irrespective of the situation.

ehsa te bhihita sankhye budhir yoge tva imam shrunu

buddhaya yukto yaya partha karma bandham prahasyasee || 2.39 ||

This which is taught to thee is wisdom concerning Sankhya. Now listen to the wisdom concerning Yoga,

having known which, O Partha, you shall cast off the bonds of action.

Here Krishna tells Arjuna that the subject that he has been explaining so far is the wisdom about Sankhya

i.e. ‘logic of reasoning by which the Absolute Reality is understood’ (p. 214, Sw. Chinmayananda). Now

He will explain to Arjuna the technique of attaining the wisdom which is obtained by devotion through

work. This wisdom or Yoga frees one from the bondages of past karmas.

neha bhi kram naashosti pratya vaayo na vidhyate

swalpam apya asya dharmasya trayate mahato bhayat || 2.40 ||

In this, there is no loss of effort, and it does not result in any opposing results. Even a little of this

knowledge, a little practice of this Yoga, frees one from fear.

Krishna is now highlighting the advantages of understanding the knowledge about devotion through

work. He says, this knowledge will not provide any harmful results. In the olden days, Hindu culture was

steeped in rituals and then there was the possibility that some rituals were not practiced as required or

performed as per the scriptures. This could result in pratya-vaayaha meaning contrary results. So

Krishna says that a little knowledge of what I am going to impart to you will also save you from any

undesirable consequences.

vyavsaayatmika buddhir ekeha Kuru-nandana

bahu-shaakha hya anantascha buddhayo vyavasaayeenam || 2.41 ||

Here O Arjuna there is only one-pointed determination. The thoughts of the irresolute are many

branched and endless.

In the knowledge of Karma Yoga that Bhagwan is going to explain now, even the highest goal of self-

realization is possible because here a person works with single minded determination. Swami

Chinmayananda says that when we work with a hundred different desires in our minds, we are not able to

apply ourselves consistently to a single purpose and so end up not achieving any one thing and being

disappointed in the process. Here Krishna is also bringing out an important distinction between this

supreme Yoga of Karma Yoga and the more traditional Karma Kanda that Arjuna was familiar with. In

Karma kanda, people were always performing rituals to please different Gods and achieve their desires.

But the cycle of desires in unending- when you don’t have x, you long for x; when you get x, it

immediately loses its charm and you wonder if it would be possible for you to get y and so on. One then

gets caught up in this cycle. In contrast, knowledge and practice of Karma Yoga makes one single

minded. Krishna elaborates on the differences between resolute and irresolute individuals in the

subsequent slokas.

Thulasi the dearest of Sri Vishnu. She is incomparable. The pure beauty.

The marriage season of India is started with the “Tulsi Vivaha” the wedding ceremony of SriMahavishnu and Tulsi Devi on the 11th bright moon day of Kartika month, which falls on midSeptember.

A tulsi garland is the very first offering to our god in the puja.

A single leaf of Tulsi, which was placed by Rukmani has outweight SriKrishna, not even all theornaments of Sathyabhama.

So many myths and legends can be found about the importance of Tulsi. In Vishnu Puran,Skanda Puran. Devi Mahathmyam and so many othersdescribed about the sacredness of this Tulsi.

At varanasi, there is a Temple, the very famous “Tulsi ManasMandhir”, where she is worshipped as a goddess along withother gods and goddesses.

Maha ShivarathriIndu

February 16th is Maha Shivarathri. Chaturdashi starts from 16th feb 02.52 am andpresent till 17th feb 12.29am

Skandha puranam describes four Shiva ratris. The first one is nitya shivaratri (daily Shivaratri -every night). The second one is the masa Shivaratri which is observed on the krishna pakshachaturdasi (fourteenth moon day on the moons diminishing phase). The third one is the magaprathamadi Shivaratri which is observed for the thirteen days starting from prathama titi in themonth mAga (masi) and on the chaturdasi night the Lord is worshiped throughout the night. Thefourth one is observed on the masi (maga) month Krishna paksha chaturdasi. This is the oneobserved in a widespread manner. It is also called maha shivaratri.

MAHA SIVARATHRI Mahasivarathri means `the great night of Siva. According to the Sivapurana, it falls on theKrishna Chathurdasi day which is on the fourteenth day during the warning of the moon in themonth of Megha, though in some years it may occur in Phalguna also. In Kerala the month ofKumbham is noted for the Sivarathri festival which falls in February -March.

The festival is said to commemorate the day on which Siva protected the world from a totalannihilation either by drinking the deadly Kaalakoodum poison which was held up in his neck,or by effecting a healthy compromise between Brahma, the Creator and Vishnu, the Protector.

The Mahasivarathri is considered a very important day for fast and Siva worship.Though the observance of Sivarathri rites promises both material comfort in this world and blissin the other, it is mainly observed for securing the latter, While some Hindus abstain from everykind of food for the whole day, others content themselves with one meal. People cluster roundthe Siva temple and after bath smear their bodies with holy ashes and keep on reciting theprayers to siva. Pooja to Siva is kept up all the night. Strict vigil is kept in the holy night. Earlynext morning people bath once more, worship Siva and returnThere are Siva temples whereKavadiyattom is of great significance in the celebration of the Sivarathri festival.
