VC STAR ARTICLE

A recent article featured a fun and educational collaboration between the YES Acade-my Teaching and Learning Class, and our own, wonderful, Frances Adams, Healthcorps rep, along with academy advisory board member, Mr. Castaniero, Assistant Principal at Haycox Elementary School. To assist with Healthcorps' mission to help raise community awareness about obesity and diabetes, Teaching and Learning senior class students first experienced a lesson with Frances that they would later modify for 180 fifth graders from neighbor-ing Haycox Elementary School . The collaboration was incorporated into a lesson planning unit in my Teaching and Learning class. Students researched applicable ELA, ELL, and Math standards; developed student objectives and outcomes, created visuals and a handout for calculating teaspoons of sugar from grams using the label on a sweetened beverage, and typed it all in a formal work-based lesson plan. Teaching and Learning class students also researched team building and ice breaker activities to use with various age groups and then incorporated several for use with the 5th graders. Both Haycox students and teachers alike enjoyed their time with YES Academy seniors and left with a new skill and awareness in hand! They also left, according to their teachers with the teambuilding song in their hearts, as they belted it out on their entire journey back to campus, and requested to sing it for the next three days in their class!!

What’s Happening!

http://www.huenemehigh.us/

Math— Math 1 class was busy closing up their chapter 3 lesson. We finished up reviewing area

and how to apply that understanding with multiplying binomials. They used algebra tiles to model

mathematics involved in multiplying polynomials. After finishing the last sections, they worked in

groups on stations for review, and began working on a tessellation project which will be due Jan 20,

2017. I am attaching the project to this email.

Business math class was hard at work creating a shopping list which would allow our classes to

create bath bombs as presents for friends or families. They had to decide where to shop, what

coupons to use, and all on a very small budget of $50 for all 6 classes. It was very interesting to see

them get creative in ways to raise money or get people to donate supplies. I had some very surprised

students who asked how we get to do activities in class.
