    Also known as stabilization ponds or lagoons.

    A popular sewage treatment method for small communities because of their

    low construction and operating costs.

    Represent 12 per cent (500 numbers) of all sewage treatment plants.

    New oxidation ponds can treat sewage to Standard B effluent level butrequire maintenance and periodic desludging in order to maintain this

    standard.

    Comprise one or more shallow ponds in a series.

    The natural processes of algal and bacteria growth exist in a mutually

    dependent relationship.

    They are used for simple secondary treatment of sewage effluents.

    Also tend to fill, due to the settling of the bacterial and algal cellsformed during the decomposition of the sewage.

    Tend to be inefficient and require large holding capacities and longretention times.

    The degradation is relatively slow and the effluents containing theoxidized products need to be periodically removed from the ponds.

    Oxygen is supplied from natural surface aeration and by algalphotosynthesis.

    Bacteria present in the wastewater use the oxygen to feed on organicmaterial, breaking it down into nutrients and carbon dioxide.

    These are in turn used by the algae. Other microbes in the pond such

    as protozoa remove additional organic and nutrients to polish theeffluent.

    There are normally at least two ponds constructed.

    The first pond reduces the organic material using aerobic digestionwhile the second pond polishes the effluent and reduces the

    pathogens present in sewage.

    Sewage enters a large pond after passing through a settling and

    screening chamber.

    After retention for several days, the flow is often passed into asecond pond for further treatment before it is discharged into a drain.

    Bacteria already present in sewage acts to break down organic matter

    using oxygen from the surface of the pond.

    Oxidation ponds need to be desludged periodically in order to work

    effectively.

    Ujian BOD dibuat untuk mengenal pasti jumlah oksigenterlarut yang digunakan oleh bakteria semasa proses

    pengoksidaan organik. Sekiranya kandungan BOD

    adalah tinggi ia bermaksud air ini adalah tercemar maka

    lebih banyak oksigen terlarut perlu dimasukkan semasa

    proses rawatan kumbahan dijalankan.

    Ujian COD dilakukan adalah untuk mengenalpasti

    jumlah perbezaan oksigen dan bahan organik yang

    terdapat di dalam air kumbahan yang memerlukan

    bahan kimia untuk pengoksidaan. Dalam ujian ini, nilai

    tersebut akan diketahui. Sekiranya keputusan yang

    menunjukan nilai COD yang tinggi bermaksud air

    kumbahan ini tercemar. Nilai tinggi COD bermaksud

    terdapat bahan tidak organik yang banyak.
