Facts• Oxford is the home to the oldest college in the
english-speaking world, the University of Oxford.• The earliest known evidence of teaching is over 900
years old.
• It is older than the Aztec Empire, Genghis Khan and Notre Dame

The oldest known grafitti on record
• At the bottom of the stairs at Christ Church “no peel” is nailed into a door.
• It was written in protest of the Prime Minister Sir Robert Peel who was in office from 30. August 1841 to 29. June 1846

History• Over 1100 years ago Dida of
Eynsham established a nunnery in the Oxford area with Saint Frideswide.• This is the earliest recorded history
of settlers in area we now know of as Oxford.
• The nunnery would later go on to be destroyed during a battle against danish vikings who had attacked Oxford mulitple times, and then later some parts of it was incorporated into the Christ Chruch that still stands in Oxford today

University of Oxford
• Nobody knows when it was first established• We don’t know when the university was
founded, but we know people have been studying there since 1096
• At least 900 years old

• During the 2nd world war Oxford remained untouched, unlike other big cities in England that were bombed during the period known as “The Blitz”
• Hitler intented on making Oxford the capital of his new Kingdom; after they had conquered England.
• This was why the city was never bombed during the 2nd world war

Current situation• Oxford has grown to become the 52 biggest city
in the UK.• Over 150,000 inhabitants
• Its one of the most popular cities for students in the world, and the seventh most popular city for tourists in the UK.
