Political reachSuch a huge public demonstration of support was matched by commitments from world leaders to support the campaign and make every effort to ensure the people of Syria do not lose another year to bloodshed and suffering.

•Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon’s support for the campaign was echoed around the world, including by Prime Minister Cameron and Foreign Minister Hague of the UK, Foreign Minister Fabius of France, Foreign Minister Steinmeier of Germany, Prime Minister Di Rupo of Belgium, US National Security Advisor Susan Rice, Prime Minister Bettel of Luxembourg, and President Zeman of the Czech Republic.

•Former Canadian Foreign Minister, Lloyd Axworthy also showed his support for a prompt resolution of the conflict. Former Norwegian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Børge Brende retweeted Jan Egeland’s tweet announcing Brende’s clear stand #WithSyria and the European Commission tweeted 3 times.

•In Turkey, the official Turkish #PublicDiplomacy account of the Turkish Prime Minister also tweeted its support to the campaign, with a link to pictures of a #WithSyria vigil with red balloons in Istanbul.

•In the Middle East, Saudi media personality (host of ‘Kalam Nawaem’ on MBC) also tweeted her support many times.

In the US, Oxfam worked with a handful of Crisis Action partners on a bipartisan Senate Resolution on the humanitarian and human rights situation in Syria that was introduced by Sens. Kaine (D-VA) and Rubio (R-FL), and co-sponsored by 19 Senators. It calls on President Obama to develop a strategy for the United States’ engagement in addressing the crisis.

Officials in a number of countries have already reported that the #WithSyria campaign succeeded in creating a global moment and in so doing has re-energised foreign ministries.

How will this have further Impact? We’ve shown world leaders that people all over the world care about the fate of Syrians. Now we have to get them to act. The global display of solidarity will give a significant boost to our ongoing advocacy as we work to push for: •An end to the bloodshed, •Access for people to desperately-needed aid and safety,•Leaders to commit to inclusive peace talks

This message has been relayed to more than 50 governments in private letters and we will be following up to secure additional pledges from world leaders. As we’ve finally seen some much-needed unity from the UN Security Council on humanitarian access and a political solution – we will hold leaders to their commitments to try to ensure this is the beginning of the end.

Oxfam continues to work to support Syrian CSO actors, including through a lobby tour of UNSC member states in NYC around the 3rd anniversary of the crisis.

Syrian civil society leaders Rajaa Atalli and Rim Turkmani are focusing particularly on the inclusion of women in the peace process.

How will this have further

Impact?
