SAFETY INFORMATION

When you operate your water vehicle, youmust know and practice the following foryour safety:● Before operating the vehicle, read this

entire manual, the Riding Practice Tips, the Riding Instruction card and all warn-ing labels on the vehicle. Reading thesematerials should give you an understand-ing of the vehicle and its operation.Never allow anyone to operate this watervehicle until they too have read thisowner’s/operator’s manual, the RidingPractice Tips, the Riding Instruction cardand all warning labels.

● This product emits exhaust gases whichcontain carbon monoxide, a colorless, odorless gas which may cause braindamage or death when inhaled. Symp-toms include nausea, dizziness, anddrowsiness. Operate the vehicle in anopen area.

EJU00304a

LIMITATIONS ON WHO MAY OPERATE THE VEHICLE● This water vehicle is recommended only

for operators 16 and older with a validmotor vehicle license.Even though a motor vehicle operator’slicense is not required for water vehicleoperation in most states, it is one indica-tor that the operator has previously dem-onstrated a reasonable degree ofmaturity, responsibility, and good judg-ment.

A responsible adult must supervise oper-ation of this vehicle by minors. Many states have minimum age and edu-cation requirements. Always check statesand all applicable local boating laws thatapply to you before you operate the vehi-cle.

● Your water vehicle is designed to carrythe operator and one or two passengers,as long as the total weight does notexceed the maximum load capacity.

● Never exceed the weight capacity norallow more than three persons (or twopersons with a skier) to ride this vehicle atone time.

ATTENTION:Maximum vehicle load capacity: 240 kg (530 lb)Includes weight of operator, passengers, and any cargo.

● Do not try to ride with passengers untilyou have considerable practice ridingalone. Operating with passengersrequires more skill. Take the time tobecome accustomed to the handlingcharacteristics of the vehicle with passen-gers before trying any difficult maneuvers.

CRUISING LIMITATIONS● Do not jump boat wakes or follow another

boat or watercraft too closely. Youincrease your risk of colliding with anotherboat, which could result in severe injury ordeath. Do not jump waves, wakes, or anyobjects. You risk severe impact injuries.Jumping can also cause damage to thevehicle.

● Do not operate the vehicle in rough water, bad weather or when visibility is poor; thismay lead to an accident causing injury ordeath. Be alert to the possibility ofadverse weather. Take note of weatherforecasts and the prevailing weather con-ditions before setting out on your watervehicle.

● As with any water sport, you should notride your water vehicle without someoneelse near by. If you ride further than swim-ming distance from shore, you should beaccompanied by another boat or water-craft. It’s good, common sense!

● Never ride in water that is less than 60 cm(2 feet) deep. You increase your chanceof hitting an underwater obstacle. Youcould be injured.

● Do not operate the vehicle after sunset orbefore dawn. It is not equipped with light-ing required for night operation. You riskcollision with another boat which couldcause injury or death.

● The maximum performance potential ofthis watercraft is not suitable for all condi-tions. Consider water conditions, weather, boat traffic and other potential obstacles, speed limits and other local laws, andyour abilities before attempting to travel athigher speeds. Operate the watercraft nofaster than justified by these conditions.

EJU00618

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS● Operating your water vehicle requires

skills acquired only through practice overa period of time. Take the time to learn thebasic operating techniques well, beforeattempting more difficult maneuvers.

● Both operator and passengers mustalways wear a U.S. Coast Guardapproved personal flotation device (vest-type) because of the drowning hazardsassociated with water sports.

1 U.S. Coast Guard-approved personal flotationdevice

2 Wet suit3 Water shoes4 Gloves5 Eye protection

● Strong streams of water from the jet noz-zle, or impact with the water surface canbe dangerous. Both operator and passen-gers must wear wet suits. Normal swim-ming attire may not adequately protectyou. A wet suit will help protect againstinternal injuries to orifices (rectum andvagina) from strong jet streams, and fromimpact with the water surface. Wet suitsalso help protect against hypothermia(low body temperature) and abrasions.

● Both operator and passengers shouldwear water shoes to help protect feet fromobjects hidden under water. Wearinggloves can also help protect hands fromabrasions.

● Wind, water, and glare from the sun mayget in your eyes while you operate yourwater vehicle, reducing your ability to see.You may want to consider wearing eyeprotection such as sunglasses or goggleswhile riding. Some may find, however,

that eye protection obstructs or distortstheir vision, and distracts from operation.Only you know the circumstances inwhich you operate your water vehicle, soonly you can decide if the benefits of eyeprotection outweigh the potential hazards.

● If you wear prescription lenses, considermeasures to secure them against losswhile riding. For example, some gogglesare designed to be worn over glasses orcontact lenses. Restraining straps forglasses are also made which aredesigned to float if your glasses shouldfall in the water.

● Helmets meeting Snell or DOT standardsare required for IJSBA-sanctioned races. You must decide whether to wear a hel-met while you ride recreationally. A hel-met could help protect you in certainkinds of accidents. You should also knowthat a helmet could injure you in someother riding conditions.A helmet is designed to provide somehead protection. Although helmets cannotprotect against all foreseeable impacts, ahelmet might reduce your injuries in a col-lision with a boat or other obstacles.A helmet may have potential safety haz-ards, as well. A helmet could catch thewater during a fall into the water. This iscommonly called “bucketing.” The result-ing strain on your neck could cause chok-ing, severe and permanent neck injuries,or death. A helmet could also increasethe risk of an accident if it reduces yourvision or hearing, or if it distracts you orincreases your fatigue.

Page 15: OWNER’S/OPERATOR’S MANUAL - Yamaha Motor Company · READ THIS OWNER’S / OPERATOR’S MANUAL CAREFULLY ... speed limits and other local laws, and ... wear a helmet based upon

1-11

E

How should you decide if a helmet’spotential safety benefits outweigh itspotential risks for you? Consider your par-ticular riding conditions. Consider factorssuch as your riding environment and yourriding style and ability. Also consider thelikelihood of traffic congestion, and thewater surface conditions. If you decide towear a helmet based upon your riding cir-cumstances, choose one carefully. Lookfor a helmet designed for personal water-craft use, if possible. Consider a helmetmeeting Snell or DOT standards. If youwill be engaging in closed-course compe-tition, follow the helmet requirements ofthe sanctioning organization.

● NEVER ride the vehicle after consumingalcohol or taking drugs.

● For reasons of safety and proper care, always perform the pre-operation checkson page 3-3 before riding.

● The operator and passengers shouldalways keep both feet on the footrest floorwhen the vehicle is in motion. If you liftyour feet, you increase your chances oflosing your balance, and your feet couldhit objects outside the water vehicle. Donot give a ride to a child whose feet can-not reach the footrest floor.Passengers should firmly hold on-eitherto the person in front of them or to thehandgrips provided.

● If you are pregnant or in poor health, askyour doctor’s advice on whether it is safefor you to ride this water vehicle.

● Do not attempt to modify this water vehi-cle!Modifications to your machine mayreduce safety and reliability, and maymake the vehicle unsafe or illegal for use.

● The operator should always attach theengine stop switch lanyard (cable) to hisleft wrist so that the engine will stop if theoperator falls off.Be sure the lanyard is not wrappedaround the handlebar or tangled in thecontrols which would prevent the lanyardfrom pulling away.

● To prevent accidental starting of theengine, always remove the lock-platefrom the engine stop lanyard switch whenthe engine is not running.

● Always watch carefully for swimmers.Stay away from swimming areas. Swim-mers are hard to see and you could acci-dentally hit someone in the water.

● Avoid being hit by another boat! Youshould always take the responsibility towatch for traffic, other boaters may not bewatching for you. If they don’t see you, oryou maneuver more quickly than otherboaters expect, you risk a collision.Maintain a safe distance from other boatsor watercraft, and also watch for boat’s skiropes or fishing lines. Obey the “Rules ofthe Road” (see page 1-15~1-18), and besure to check behind you before making aturn.

● This water vehicle is included in the ClassA inboard boat classification of the U.S.Coast Guard. A water craft of this typeMUST carry a fire extinguisher of a B-1classification, with a capacity of twopounds or more when navigating inwaters under Coast Guard jurisdiction. Inaddition, most state and local boatinglaws also require that the carry a USCG-approved extinguisher wherever it is oper-ated.

EJU00313a

HAZARD INFORMATION● When transporting or storing your water

vehicle, always place the fuel cock in the“OFF” position. Otherwise, it is possiblefor gasoline to overflow from the carbure-tor.

● Do not start the engine on land untileveryone is away from the stern. Hotwater and steam spurting from exhaustoutlet into the air can cause seriousburns.

● Hot muffler surfaces can cause seriousburns. Do not touch any muffler surfaceduring or after operation. The catalyticconverter gets hotter after the enginestops.

WATER VEHICLE CHARACTERISTICS

● Jet thrust turns the vehicle. If you aregoing faster than trolling speeds (the low-est maneuvering speed), you must usethrottle to turn. If you release the throttlecompletely, you cannot turn-even if youturn the handlebars. Practice turning in anopen area without obstructions until youhave a good feel for this maneuver.

● Yamaha water vehicles are water-jet pro-pelled. The jet pump is directly connectedto the engine. This means that jet thrustwill produce some vehicle movementwhenever the engine is running. There isno “neutral” position. You are either in“forward” or “reverse,” depending uponshift lever position.

● Boats, including your water vehicle, donot have brakes.Release the throttle or stop the engine toslow down. Remember, however, that youhave no steering control without throttle.Do not expect the “reverse” position towork as a brake. Shifting to reverse willnot slow down or stop the vehicle fromhigher speeds.

● Keep the following in mind when usingreverse:Reverse is for launching and low speedmaneuvering only. Shift only when theengine is idling or off. Do not shift whileapplying throttle.Make sure there are no obstacles or peo-ple behind you before shifting intoreverse.

● Keep hands, feet, hair, and all other partsof your body and clothing away from jetintake on the bottom of the hull whileengine is running because they could becaught in the intake.Stop the engine and remove the lockplate from the engine stop lanyard switchbefore removing any debris or weedswhich may have collected around the jetintake.Never insert any object in the jet pumpoutlet. Service injury or death could resultfrom coming in contact with the rotatingparts of the jet pump.

WATER SKIINGYou can use this water vehicle to pull awater skier. Keep the following in mind whenusing the vehicle for skiing.● Because this water vehicle does not have

the size or thrust of a traditional ski boat, pulling a skier can affect steering andhandling.

● Your control while pulling a skier isaffected by the skier’s ability, as well aswater and weather conditions.

● The operator should be comfortable car-rying passengers before attempting topull a skier.

● Make gradual turns; sharp turns require ahigh level of skill for both the operator andskier.

● Watch for obstacles or other boating traf-fic which could be hazardous to the skieras well as you and the vehicle.

● When pulling a skier, the observer shouldface to the rear while holding the handgripwith both hands. The observer shouldalways sit astride the seat with his or herfeet placed firmly on the foot step(s) onthe deck for proper balance.

1 Handgrip2 Foot step

● Towing certain object (such as otherboats or watercraft, or heavy or bulkyitems) can cause loss of steering controland create a hazardous condition. If asuitable object must be towed, ride slowlyand cautiously.

RULES OF THE ROAD

Your Yamaha water vehicle is legally con-sidered a power boat. Operation of thiswater vehicle must be in accordance withthe rules and regulations governing thewaterway on which it is used.

Just as there are rules which apply whenyou are driving on streets and highways, there are waterway rules which apply whenyou are riding your water vehicle. Theserules are used internationally, and are alsoenforced by the United States Coast Guardand local agencies. You should be aware ofthese rules, and follow them whenever youencounter another vessel on the water.

Several sets of rules prevail according togeographic location, but are all basically thesame as the International Rules of theRoad. The rules presented here in yourowner’s/operator’s manual are condensed, and have been provided for your conve-nience only. Consult your local U.S. CoastGuard Auxiliary or Department of MotorVehicles for a complete set of rules govern-ing the waters in which you will be ridingyour water vehicle.

WARNINGDo not operate the vehicle after sunset orbefore dawn. It is not equipped with light-ing required for night operation. You riskcollision with another boat which couldcause injury or death.

STEERING AND SAILING RULES AND SOUND SIGNALSWhenever two vessels on the water meetone another, one vessel has the right-of-way; it is called the “stand-on” vessel. Thevessel which does not have the right-of-wayis called the “give-way” or “burdened” ves-sel. These rules determine which vessel hasthe right-of-way, and what each vesselshould do.

Stand-On VesselThe vessel with the right-of-way has the dutyto continue its course and speed, except toavoid an immediate collision. When youmaintain your direction and speed, the othervessel will be able to determine how best toavoid you.

Give-Way VesselThe vessel which does not have the right-of-way has the duty to take positive and timelyaction to stay out of the way of the Stand-Onvessel. Normally, you should not cross infront of the vessel with the right-of-way. Youshould slow down or change directionsbriefly and pass behind the other vessel. You should always move in such a way thatthe operator of the other vessel can seewhat you are doing.

“The General Prudential Rule”This rule is called Rule 2 in the InternationalRules and says,

‘In obeying and construing these rules dueregard shall be had to all dangers of naviga-tion and collision, and to any special circum-stances, which may render a departure fromthe above rules necessary in order to avoidimmediate danger.’

Page 20: OWNER’S/OPERATOR’S MANUAL - Yamaha Motor Company · READ THIS OWNER’S / OPERATOR’S MANUAL CAREFULLY ... speed limits and other local laws, and ... wear a helmet based upon

1-16

E

In other words, follow the standard rulesexcept when a collision will occur unlessboth vessels try to avoid each other. If that isthe case, both vessels become “Give-Way”vessels.

RULES WHEN ENCOUNTERING VESSELSThere are three main situations which youmay encounter with other vessels whichcould lead to a collision unless the SteeringRules are followed:

Meeting (you are approaching another ves-sel head-on)Crossing (you are traveling across the othervessel’s path)Overtaking (you are passing or beingpassed by another vessel)

In the following illustration, your water vehi-cle is in the center. You should give the right-of-way to any vessels shown in the whitearea (you are the Give-Way vessel). Anyvessels in the shaded area must yield to you(they are the Give-Way vessels). Both youand the meeting vessel must alter course toavoid each other.

MeetingIf you are meeting another power vesselhead on, and are close enough to run therisk of collision, neither of you has the right-of-way! Both of you should alter course toavoid an accident. You should keep theother vessel on your port (left) side. Thisrule doesn’t apply if both of you will clearone another if you continue on your setcourse and speed.

CrossingWhen two power driven vessels are crossingeach other’s path close enough to run therisk of collision, the vessel which has theother on the starboard (right) side must keepout of the way of the other. If the other ves-sel is on your right, you must keep out of itsway; you are the Give-Way vessel. If theother vessel is on your port (left) side, remember that you should maintain courseand direction, provided the other vesselgives you the right-of-way as it should.

Page 21: OWNER’S/OPERATOR’S MANUAL - Yamaha Motor Company · READ THIS OWNER’S / OPERATOR’S MANUAL CAREFULLY ... speed limits and other local laws, and ... wear a helmet based upon

1-17

E

OvertakingIf you are passing another vessel, you arethe “Give-Way” vessel. This means that theother vessel is expected to maintain itscourse and speed. You must stay out of itsway until you are clear of it. Likewise, ifanother vessel is passing you, you shouldmaintain your speed and direction so thatthe other vessel can steer itself around you.

OTHER SPECIAL SITUATIONSThere are three other rules you should beaware of when riding your water vehiclearound other vessels.

Narrow Channels and BendsWhen navigating in narrow channels, youshould keep to the right when it is safe andpractical to do so. If the operator of a power-driven vessel is preparing to go around abend that may obstruct the view of otherwater vessels, the operator should sound aprolonged blast on the whistle (4 to 6 sec-onds). If another vessel is around the bend,it too should sound the whistle. Even if noreply is heard, however, the vessel shouldstill proceed around the bend with caution. Ifyou navigate such waters with your watervehicle, you will need to carry a portable airhorn, available from local marine supplystores.

Fishing Vessel Right-of-wayAll vessels which are fishing with nets, linesor trawls are considered to be “fishing ves-sels” under the International Rules. Vesselswith trolling lines are not considered fishingvessels. Fishing vessels have the right-of-way regardless of position. Fishing vesselscannot, however, impede the passage ofother vessels in narrow channels.

Sailing Vessel Right-of-WaySailing vessels should normally be given theright-of-way. The exceptions to this are:1. When the sailing vessel is overtaking

the power-driven vessel, the power-driven vessel has the right-of-way.

2. Sailing vessels should keep clear of anyfishing vessel.

3. In a narrow channel, a sailing vesselshould not hamper the safe passage ofa power-driven vessel which can navi-gate only in such a channel.

Reading Buoys And Other MarkersThe waters of the United States are markedfor safe navigation by the lateral system ofbuoyage. Simply put, buoys and markershave an arrangement of shapes, colors, numbers and lights to show which side ofthe buoy a boater should pass on when nav-igating in a particular direction. The mark-ings on these buoys are oriented from theperspective of being entered from seaward(the boater is going towards the port). Thismeans that red buoys are passed on thestarboard (right) side when proceeding fromopen water into port, and black buoys are toport (left) side. When navigating out of port, your position with respect to the buoysshould be reversed; red buoys should be toport and black buoys to starboard.

Many bodies of water used by boaters areentirely within the boundaries of a particularstate. The Uniform State Waterway MarkingSystem has been devised for these waters.

Page 22: OWNER’S/OPERATOR’S MANUAL - Yamaha Motor Company · READ THIS OWNER’S / OPERATOR’S MANUAL CAREFULLY ... speed limits and other local laws, and ... wear a helmet based upon

1-18

E

This system uses buoys and signs with dis-tinctive shapes and colors to show regula-tory or advisory information. These markersare white with black letters and orangeboarders. They signify speed zones, restricted areas, danger areas, and generalinformation.

Remember, markings may vary by geo-graphic location. Always consult local boat-ing authorities before riding your watervehicle in unfamiliar waters.

ENJOY YOUR WATER VEHICLE RESPONSIBLY

● You share the areas you enjoy whenriding your water vehicle with others andwith nature. So your enjoyment includes aresponsibility to treat these other peopleand nature with respect and courtesy.

● Whenever and wherever you ride, think ofyourself as the guest of those around you.Remember, for example, that the sound ofyour water vehicle may be music to you,but it could be just noise to others. Andthe exciting splash of your wake canmake waves others won’t enjoy. Avoidriding close to shoreline homes andwaterfowl nesting areas or other wildlifeareas, and keep a respectful distancefrom fishermen, other boats, swimmers, and populated beaches. When travel inareas like these is unavoidable, rideslowly and obey all laws.

● Remember that pollution can be harmfulto the environment. Do not refuel or addoil where a spill could cause damage tonature. Remove your water vehicle fromthe water and move it away from theshoreline before refueling. Keep your sur-roundings pleasant for the people andwildlife that share the waterways: do notlitter!

● When you ride responsibly, with respectand courtesy for others, you help ensurethat our waterways stay open for theenjoyment of a variety of recreationalopportunities.

FUEL REQUIREMENTS

GASOLINE (PETROL)

WARNINGGASOLINE (PETROL) AND ITS VAPORSARE HIGHLY FLAMMABLE AND EXPLO-SIVE!● Do not smoke when refueling, and

keep away from sparks, flames, orother sources of ignition.

● Stop the engine before refueling.● Refuel in a well-ventilated area. Do not

stand or sit on the vehicle while refuel-ing in case of fire.

● Take care not to spill gasoline (petrol). If gasoline (petrol) spills, wipe it upimmediately with dry rags. Alwaysproperly dispose of gasoline-soakedrags.

● Avoid overfilling the fuel tank. Stop fill-ing when the fuel level just reaches thebottom of the filler tube. Do not fill upthe filler tube because fuel expands asit warms up and could overflow.

● Tighten the filler cap securely afterrefueling.

● If you should swallow some gasoline(petrol), inhale a lot of gasoline (petrol)vapor, or get gasoline (petrol) in youreyes, get immediate medical attention.

● If any gasoline (petrol) spills onto yourskin, immediately wash with soap andwater. Change clothing if gasoline(petrol) spills on it.

CAUTION:● Do not use leaded gasoline. Leaded

gasoline can seriously damage thecatalytic converter.

● Use only fresh gasoline (petrol) thathas been stored in clean containers.

GasoholThere are two types of gasohol: gasoholcontaining ethanol and that containing meth-anol. Gasohol containing ethanol can beused if ethanol content does not exceed10% and the fuel meets minimum octaneratings. Gasohol containing methanol is notrecommended by Yamaha because it cancause fuel system damage or engine perfor-mance problems.

COOLING WATER PILOT OUTLETThis engine is equipped with a cooling-waterpilot outlet at both sides of the deck. Checkthat water comes out of the outlet while theengine is running. If you do not see anywater at the outlet, cooling water may not becirculating in the engine. In that case, stop the engine and check forthe cause (Refer to overheat warning sys-tem).

NOTE:If water cooling passages on the engine aredry it will take about 20 seconds to reachwater at the outlet after starting.

EJU00356a

STEERINGYour water vehicle can be steered by turningthe handlebar 1 the same direction youwish to travel, to the right or left. When thehandlebar is turned, the angle of the jet (out-put) nozzle at the stern is changed, and thechange in direction of the nozzle changesthe direction of the vehicle accordingly. Therefore, because only the strength of thejet-flow output can determine the speed anddirection of a turn, the throttle must alwaysbe opened above idle when attempting aturn, except at trolling speed.

SHIFT LEVERThis water vehicle is equipped with a shiftlever. By placing the shift lever in “Forward”or “Reverse”, the direction of the jet thrustcan be changed. Use “Reverse” for slow-speed maneuvering only. It is useful whenlaunching the vehicle from a trailer, or whenit is necessary to back up out of tight spotswhere you cannot turn around. To shift in Reverse, close the throttle andpull the shift lever up using your right hand.EWJ00050

WARNING● Make sure there are no obstacles or

people behind you before shifting intoreverse.

● Do not touch the reverse gate while itis being shifted. You could be pinched.

QUICK SHIFT TRIM SYSTEM(Q.S.T.S.)The trim angle of your water vehicle can beadjusted by operating the Q.S.T.S.Operating the trim shifting grip 1 changesthe angle of the jet (output) nozzle at thestern. The nozzle angle changes the trimangle of the vehicle to one of five positions.

NOTE:There are two positions A and B for bowdown, neutral “N”, and two positions C andD for bow up.

Changing the trim angle of the vehicle1) Set the throttle lever to half open (3,000

r/min) or less.2) Squeeze and hold the shift lock release

lever 2. Then turn the trim shifting gripto the desired position.● Turning the grip to A or B from “N”:

Bow will go down while the vehicle ison plane.

● Turning the grip to C or D from “N”:Bow will go up while the vehicle is onplane.

3) Release the shift lock release lever tolock the position.

ECJ00049

CAUTION:Do not turn the grip while operating thevehicle at full throttle, otherwise damagecould occur to the Q.S.T.S.

The Neutral (“N”) shift position will providegood performance for most conditions. Toenhance particular types of performance, choose the one of the “Bow Down” or “BowUp” positions.

Page 40: OWNER’S/OPERATOR’S MANUAL - Yamaha Motor Company · READ THIS OWNER’S / OPERATOR’S MANUAL CAREFULLY ... speed limits and other local laws, and ... wear a helmet based upon

2-14

E

Shifting to “Bow Down”“Bow Down” puts more of the bow in thewater. This gives the water vehicle more“hook,” which enhances turning perfor-mance. This position will also help the watervehicle get up on plane more quickly. Athigher speeds, however, the water vehiclewill have greater tendency to “bow steer”and follow waves and wakes in the water.Fuel economy and maximum speed are alsoreduced.

Shifting to “Bow Up”“Bow Up” puts less of the bow in the water. There is less water resistance, so straight-ahead acceleration when on plane and topspeed are enhanced. In some conditions, however, the vehicle may tend to “porpoise”(hop in the water). If the vehicle is porpois-ing, choose Neutral or Bow Down trim.

OVERHEAT WARNING SYSTEMThe engine has an overheat warning device. Ifthe engine starts to overheat, the warninglamp(LED), indicator and “W.TEMP” on themeter begin to blink and the buzzer soundsintermittently. If this happens, reduce the enginespeed and return to beach at low speed. Ifthere is no water discharge at the cooling waterpilot outlet while the engine is running, checkthe jet intake and impeller for clogging.EWJ00051a

WARNINGBefore attempting to remove weeds ordebris from the jet intake or impellerareas, shut off the engine and removethe engine stop switch lock-plate fromthe stop switch. Severe injury or deathcould result from coming in contact withthe rotating parts of the jet pump.

CAUTION:This model is equipped with a catalyticconverter.● Return to shore at low speed if the over-

heat warning indicator and buzzer areon, and the display shows “W.TEMP.” Ifyou ignore these signals, the engine willstop running and cannot be restarteduntil the exhaust system cools.

● Have your vehicle inspected and ser-viced by a Yamaha water vehicle dealer ifthe engine stopped due to overheating.

If the initial overheat warning is ignored, engine and exhaust system heat canincrease, particularly if the vehicle continuesto be operated at higher speed. If so, thewarning indicators and buzzer will changefrom intermittent to constantly on and theoverheat system will stop ignition to theengine to reduce the risk of severe overheat-ing. The engine cannot be restarted until itcools down, so it may be necessary to havethe vehicle towed back to the beach. Refer to“Towing the Water Vehicle” on page 5-6.

NOTE:● The buzzer stops sounding if any button

on the meter is pressed. ● Ask a Yamaha water vehicle dealer to

inspect the vehicle if there is no apparentreason for overheating.

GASOLINE (PETROL) AND ENGINE OIL FILLING

This engine uses Yamaha’s oil injection sys-tem, which provides superior lubrication byensuring the proper oil ratio for all operatingconditions. No fuel premixing is necessary(except during break-in / running-in). Simplypour gasoline (petrol) into the fuel tank andoil into the oil tank.

EJU00722

FILLING THE GASOLINE (PETROL) TANK1) Open the front hood and remove the

front storage compartment, to check thefuel level.

2) Remove the fuel tank filler cap, andslowly add fuel to the fuel tank. Be care-ful not to spill fuel or overfill the tank.

3) Stop filling when the fuel just reachesthe bottom of the filler tube on the fueltank. Do not fill into the filler tube, because gasoline (petrol) could spill out.

ECJ00058

CAUTION:Be careful when refueling. Avoid gettingwater or other contaminants in the fueltank. Contaminated fuel can cause poorrunning or engine damage.

Fuel tank capacity:70 L (18.5 US gal, 15.4 Imp gal)

RIDING YOUR WATER VEHICLE

GETTING TO KNOW YOUR WATER VEHICLERiding your water vehicle requires skillsacquired through practice over a period oftime. Take the time to learn the basic tech-niques well before attempting more difficultmaneuvers.

Riding your new water vehicle can be a veryenjoyable activity, providing you with hoursof pleasure. But it is essential to familiarizeyourself with the operation of the water vehi-cle to achieve the skill necessary to enjoyriding safely. Before you begin to ride besure you have read this owner’s/operator’smanual completely and understand theoperation of the controls. Pay particularattention to the safety information on pages1-8 to 1-14. Read all caution and warninglabels on your water vehicle.

Also read the Riding Practice Tips bookletsupplied with your water vehicle.

Remember: Your water vehicle is designedfor one operator and two passengers only.Never have more than three people on thevehicle at any time.

EJU00474a

LEARNING TO RIDE YOUR WATER VEHICLEBefore riding, always perform the pre-opera-tion checks listed on page 3-3. The shorttime spent checking the machine’s conditionwill reward you with added safety and amore reliable water vehicle.Check state and local laws before operatingyour water vehicle. Read the Boat Handling

Instructions issued by the U.S. Coast Guardfor basic safe boating information.

Select a wide area to learn in, where visibil-ity is good and other boat traffic is light.Have someone in a boat accompany you ifoperating far from shore. Keep the properdistance from other boats and vehicles. Donot ride where people are swimming.

Always attach the engine stop switch lan-yard to your left wrist before operating. You must always wear a U.S. Coast Guardapproved personal flotation device.Strong streams of water from the jet nozzle,or impact with the water surface can be dan-gerous. You must wear a wet suit. Normalswimming attire may not adequately protectyou. A wet suit will help protect against inter-nal injuries to orifices (rectum and vagina)from strong jet streams, and from impactwith the water surface. Wet suits also helpprotect against hypothermia (low body tem-perature) and abrasions. You should wear water shoes to help protectfeet from objects hidden under water. Wear-ing gloves can also help protect hands fromabrasions.Wind, water, and glare from the sun may getin your eyes while you operate your watervehicle, reducing your ability to see. Youmay want to consider wearing eye protectionsuch as sunglasses or goggles while riding. Some may find, however, that eye protectionobstructs or distorts their vision, and dis-tracts from operation. Only you know the circumstances in whichyou operate your water vehicle, so only youcan decide if the benefits of eye protectionoutweigh the potential hazards.

CAUTION:If the vehicle has been capsized for fiveminutes or more, air may have enteredthe oil injection system. Leave the engineoff, or operate only at trolling speeds, for10 minutes after the vehicle has been putright-side up. This will allow any air tobleed off.

EJU00499

TURNINGThrottle produces thrust from the jet pump.Directional control is provided by openingthe throttle and turning the handlebars. To make a turn at higher than trolling speed:Reduce your speed, then turn the handle-bars and shift your weight in the desireddirection, and apply enough throttle to makeyour turn. High thrust turns the vehiclesharply; low thrust turns less sharply.Releasing the throttle completely causes thevehicle to go straight. TURNS CANNOT BEMADE WITHOUT APPLYING THROTTLE!

WARNING● You need engine power to turn. Do not

release the throttle completely. Releas-ing the throttle lever can cause you tohit an obstacle you are attempting toavoid. A collision could result insevere injury or death.

● Make gradual turns at higher speedsor slow down before turning. Sharpturns at higher speeds may cause thevehicle to slide sideways or spin. Thepassenger(s) and operator could bethrown off suddenly and be injured.

STOPPINGThe vehicle is not equipped with a separatebraking system. It is stopped by water resistance when thethrottle lever is released. From full speed, thevehicle stops in approximately 120 m (395feet) after the throttle is released and theengine stopped. The stopping distance variesdepending on gross weight, water surfaceconditions, and wind direction. The statedstopping distance should be used for a refer-ence. The watercraft slows down as soon asthe throttle lever is released, but will coast for adistance before fully stopping. If you are notsure you can stop in time before hitting anobstacle, apply throttle and turn in anotherdirection.

WARNINGAllow adequate stopping distance. Failureto begin slowing soon enough could causeyou to hit an obstacle you are approaching.Do not shut off the engine when slowingdown in case you need engine power tosteer away from a boat or other obstaclethat comes into your path.

Use of reverse is not allowed: Never attemptto stop the water vehicle by using “Reverse”.The reason: Reverse is not a brake.

SPARK PLUG CLEANING AND ADJUSTMENTThe spark plug is an important engine com-ponent and is easy to inspect. The conditionof the spark plug can indicate somethingabout the condition of the engine. For exam-ple, if the center electrode porcelain is verywhite, this could indicate an intake air leakor carburetion problem in that cylinder. Donot attempt to diagnose any problems your-self. Instead, take the vehicle to a Yamahawater vehicle dealer. You should periodicallyremove and inspect the spark plug becauseheat and deposits will cause the spark plugto slowly break down and erode. If electrodeerosion becomes excessive, or if carbon andother deposits are excessive, you shouldreplace the spark plug with another of thecorrect type.

Before reinstalling the spark-plug, measurethe electrode gap with a wire thicknessgauge; adjust the gap to specification if nec-essary.

When fitting the spark plug, always cleanthe gasket surface. Wipe off any dirt fromthe threads and screw in the spark plug tothe correct torque.

Standard spark plug: BR8ES-11

Spark plug gap a:1.0 ~ 1.1 mm (0.039 ~ 0.043 in)

Spark plug torque:25 Nm (2.5 m•kg, 18 ft•lb)

EMERGENCY PROCEDURESEJU00598a

CLEANING THE JET INTAKE AND IMPELLERIf weeds or debris get caught in the intake orimpeller, cavitation can occur, and thoughthe engine speed rises, forward thrust willdecrease. If this condition is allowed to con-tinue, the engine will overheat and mayseize. If there is any sign that the jet intakeor impeller is clogged with weeds or debris, beach the vehicle and check the intake andimpeller. Always stop the engine beforebeaching the vehicle.EWJ00051

WARNINGBefore attempting to remove weeds ordebris from the jet intake or impellerareas, shut off the engine and removethe lock-plate from the engine stop lan-yard switch. Severe injury or death couldresult from coming in contact with therotating parts of the jet pump.

1) Turn the vehicle on its side as shown.ECJ00089

CAUTION:Place a suitable clean cloth or carpetingunderneath the vehicle to protect it fromabrasions and scratches, and alwaysturn the vehicle over on its port (left)sides. When turning the vehicle on its side, support the front portion so the handle-bars cannot be bent or damaged.

2) Remove any weeds or debris fromaround the drive shaft, impeller, pumphousing, and steering nozzle. If it is difficult to remove them, consultyour Yamaha water vehicle dealer.

ECJ00090

CAUTION:Always avoid running your vehicle inareas where weed growth is thick. If trav-eling in weeded areas is unavoidable, runthe engine alternately at partial-throttleand full-throttle. Weeds tend to accumu-late more at a steady speed and at troll-ing speed. If weeds clog the intake orimpeller area and cause cavitation, followthe above cleaning procedure.

EJU00599

CONNECTING JUMPER CABLESIf the battery has run down, the engine canbe started using a 12-volt battery andjumper cables.EWJ00092

WARNINGBattery electrolyte is poisonous and dan-gerous. It contains sulfuric acid whichcan cause severe burns. Avoid contactwith skin, eyes or clothing.Antidote:EXTERNAL-Flush with water. INTERNAL-Drink large quantities of water or milk;follow with milk of magnesia, beaten egg,or vegetable oil. Call physician immedi-ately.EYES-Flush with water for 15 minutesand get prompt medical attention.Batteries give off explosive gases. Keepsparks, flame, cigarettes, etc. well away.If using or charging the battery in anenclosed area, make sure it is well venti-lated. Always shield your eyes whenworking near batteries.KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN.

TOWING THE WATER VEHICLEIf the vehicle becomes inoperative in thewater, it can be towed to shore. The bowmust be kept up out of the water during tow-ing to prevent water from entering theengine compartment. If the vehicle must be towed in an emer-gency using a tow rope, the operator shouldride the vehicle, holding onto the handlebar.ECJ00094

CAUTION:● Tow the water vehicle slowly; water

may enter the air intake and flood theengine compartment if the vehicle istowed too fast.

● Tow the vehicle using the bow eye 1only.

EWJ00093

WARNINGIf the vehicle is towed using a rope:● The vehicle should only be towed in an

emergency. The towing rope should belong enough so that the vehicle willnot collide with the towing boat whenslowing down. A good rule of thumb isa tow rope which is three times thecombined length of the towing boatand the vehicle. A shorter length ofrope can be used if the vehicle istowed very slowly.

● The operator of the towing boat mustkeep speed to a minimum and avoidtraffic or obstacles which could be ahazard to the rider on the vehicle.
