A long view of a historical reality

BY WILLIAM COVINGTONOW CONTRIBUTOR

When author Suzanne Collins created the “TheHunger Games” trilogy, which takes place in a post-apocalyptic world in the country of Panem, shesimultaneously created social debates on race. Thefictional country consists of a wealthy capital andtwelve surrounding districts. District 11 is the homeof Rue and Thresh, who are supporting characters inboth the book and the movie, and it is depicted as anarea near what had once been Atlanta, Ga.

District 11 residents are portrayed as being dark-skinned and having brown eyes. They are unskilledand are housed in small rundown shacks. They spe-cialize in harvesting fruit, managing crops and pick-ing cotton.

They work from sunrise to sunset. The inhabi-tants—known as citizens of the district—have knowl-edge of herbs and keep a supply of medicinal leaveson hand for insect bites. Children work alongsideadults and are excellent tree climbers, so they areused to pick fruit from branches that otherwisewould be unreachable.

Like in South, citizens of the district are some-times lynched, and everyone in town knows the song“The Hanging Tree.”

If any of the residents are caught stealing cropsthey are publicly whipped. District 11 maintains alarge police force known as peacekeepers whosemain duty is to suppress the residents. The fence sur-rounding the district is 30 feet high and topped withrazor wire. Metal plates are located along its perime-ter to prevent anyone from digging underneath thefence and escaping.

If it sounds similar to a history you’ve heard orknown before, join the club.

“The description of Thresh and Rues’ hometown,District 11, has antebellum South written all over it,”says African American science-fiction aficionado andUSC Professor Javon Johnson, who has read all threenovels. Johnson says the American LibraryAssociation in its annual report on the state of thenation’s libraries ranked “The Hunger Games” thirdon its list of inappropriate reading and does not wantto stock the trilogy in school libraries due to its racistand sexist views. But Johnson loved the movie andfeels that it is a reflection of a part of our society thatonce existed.

The nation of Panem is governed by a repressivesystem, where citizens barely survive. Everyone isstarving, with the exception of the people in the capi-tal. As punishment for an attempted rebellion againstthe capital, one boy and one girl between the ages of12 and 18 from each district are selected by lottery toparticipate in the hunger games, a televised event.Participants must fight on an island controlled by thecapital. Only one participant may remain alive.

Former motion picture industry prop and modelmaker and science fiction buff Alfred Johnson has alsoread the “The Hunger Games” trilogy, and has alsoworked on the movies “Aliens,” “Men in Black,” and wasa prop builder on the NBC television series, “I Spy.”

The movie has become tremendously successfulboth commercially and socially. It has surpassed$300 million in sales. It has spawned a rash ofTweets, e-mail and blog complaints. Many Whites, who probably have not read the book, are upset thatRue and Thresh are portrayed as Black.

A typical tweet states: “I’m still pissed that Rue isblack.” Another states: “Why is Rue a little black girl.Stick to the book, dude.”

Alfred Johnson reacts to the “racist” rants criticiz-ing “The Hunger Games” by people who seem to thinkthat science fiction is the exclusive province of Whites.

“I do understand the passion of these individualswho are complaining and unhappy. They have beenanticipating the release of the film,” says AlfredJohnson. “However, they need to realize we [Blacks]will exist in the future and should be represented as arace in science fiction.

“They must realize that science fiction is notexclusive to Whites and although we are not domi-nating the field in comparison to Whites and Asianswe have had an association with the field ever sinceancient times. There were Blacks who had been writ-ing science fiction before Jules Verne. In ancientEgypt, we painted our walls with what appeared to beflying craft and other futuristic items. However, whenwe are involved in their sci-fi movies or print we areseen as invaders.”

Alfred Johnson has a point.Ancient drawings found in North African tombs

and excavated artifacts from historical ruins areremarkably similar to modern flying machines inthat they are aerodynamically correct. Other artifactsresemble human forms in spacesuits.

However, no one has ever made the connection, according to South African science fiction writer andproducer Ken Sibanda. “We are often overlooked inthe literary field of science fiction,” he says.

Sibanda, who is currently producing a movietitled “Hannibal the African,” cites “brilliant science-fiction writers” like Martin Delany, who wrote “TheHuts of America” in 1857, five or six years beforeVerne wrote “Five Weeks in a Balloon” in 1863. Healso mentions Samuel L. Delany, Octavia Butler,Steve Barnes and Tananarive Due.

The staff at Eso Won Books agree, saying thatAfrican Americans have published science fictionnovels as early as the mid-1800s.

In an interview with the New York Science FictionReview in 1998, Samuel L. Delany, who was first pub-lished in 1962, was considered the father of AfricanAmerican Science Fiction. In that interview, Delany isquoted as saying, “for better or for worse, I am oftenspoken of as the first African American science fictionwriter. But I wear that originary label as uneasily asany writer has worn the label of science fiction itself.

“Among the ranks of what is often referred to asproto-science fiction, there are a number of Blackwriters. M. P. Shiel, whose “Purple Cloud” (1899) and“Lord of the Sea” (1901) are still read. He was aCreole with some African ancestry. Black leaderMartin Delany (1812-1885) wrote his single andhighly imaginative novel, still to be found on theshelves of Barnes & Noble today.

“’The Huts of America’ (1857) is about an imag-ined successful slave revolt in Cuba and theAmerican South, which is about as close to an sci-

ence-fiction-style alternate history novel as you canget,”Delany said. “Other Black writers whose workcertainly borders on science fiction include Sutton E.Griggs and his novel “Imperio Imperium” (1899), inwhich an African American secret society conspiresto found a separate Black state by taking over Texas.

According to Pan African Film Festival founderAyuko Babu, the first big screen science-fictionmovies featuring African Americans were “TheWorld, the Flesh the Devil” (1959), based on a novelby Shiel. “The World, the Flesh the Devil” starredHarry Belafonte as Ralph Burton, a mining engineer. In inspecting the structural integrity of a coal mine,Burton becomes trapped underground.

“I think the audience expected the White coalminers to abandon him,” says Babu. “However, theyattempted to dig him out.”

The plot takes place during a state of heightenedinternational tension and a nuclear attack occurswhile he is trapped in the subterranean mine.Underground and shielded from atmospheric radia-tion, Burton eventually digs himself out and realizes

all the human race has perished. He searches citiesthat appear to be void of life and eventually finds aWhite female, Sarah Crandall (Inger Stevens).Crandall falls in love with Burton. A third character,an injured White male, is later introduced. Crandallcannot control her attraction for the articulate, dark-skinned Burton and ignores the White characterBenson Thacker (Mel Ferrer).

Burton and Crandall care for Thacker until he isreturned to health, but Thacker becomes upset bywhat he sees as miscegenation and provokes Burton. Both men eventually arm themselves and hunt eachother through the lifeless streets of their post-apoca-lyptic world.

Toward the end, Thacker threatens to shootButton, only deciding against murder after Burtonthrows his weapon down and confronts Thackerunarmed. Burton was influenced by a biblical verse,Isaiah 2:4, which says: “He will judge between thenations and settle disputes.” Burton and Thacker arejoined by Crandall, and the three of them hold handsand walk down the empty streets together. The filmends with words “The Beginning” as opposed to“The End.”

The film, “First Spaceship on Venus” (1959), stars, among others, an African national, Julius Ongewe asTalua, a communications operator/technician. Taulais the first Black spaceman. The movie is anotherEast German-Polish production, possibly a propa-ganda movie from the Cold War era. The SovietUnion (present-day Russia) was constantly pointingout America’s practice of lynchings and various civilrights violations against Blacks in the United States.Russia used such images to bolster its communistrevolution across most Third World countries.

By producing a big-screen motion picture por-traying a Black man, Asians, and women as astro-nauts, Russia sent a message to the world that we seeall people as equal human beings, unlike the West. A

year after the Watts Riot, the “Star Trek” series wouldappear on NBC with a multi-ethnic cast. The plotinvolved a magnetic spool (tape recording) at the siteof a meteor explosion in Siberia. Scientist believe it isfrom a destroyed Venusians spacecraft that wasbound for earth. The series has an international crewof cosmonauts traveling to Venus.

“First Spaceship on Venus” was a big-budget filmfor its era. Unlike Belafonte, who continued to have asubstantial film career, after “First Spaceship onVenue,” Ongewe disappeared into obscurity.

Television science-fiction programs may havegiven African Americans their first positive image. Two articles that ran in 1963 support this. One gavethe following description in reference to the series,“The Outer Limits”:

“Transcending the color barrier on the TV screengoes to the ‘Outer Limits,’ a 1963 ABC-TV sci-fishocker,” wrote the Chicago Tribune. And the Nov. 8,1963, edition of Time Magazine stated, “The OuterLimits is one of the television shows this season thatallows Negro actors to cross the racial bar.

“On one segment, a Negro recently played awould-be Pierre Salinger, press secretary to a presi-dential candidate. Another Outer Limits episode willhave a Negro astronaut on the moon.”

“The Outer Limits” was ABC’s answer to the “TheTwilight Zone.” The 27th episode of “The TwilightZone” on April 8, 1960, featured Black actor IvanDixon as Bollie Jackson, a washed-up boxer.

According to a professor at the University of EastAnglia in the United Kingdom, Christine Cornea,Ph.D., a cinema analyst and author of Science FictionCinema, Dixon’s character was seen as a loserplagued with the physiological habits of an ex-junkie,winning a boxing match as a result of his youngdaughter’s boyfriend making a wish that he wouldwin as opposed to him triumphing by natural boxingskill. Although the character Jackson may have beenadvanced for the time, it was still weighted with thestereotypical baggage given to African Americansduring the turbulent ’60s.

In addition to writing science fiction novels orplaying characters in science fiction movies, a seriesknown as the “Planet of the Apes” may have attempt-ed to open eyes to social consciousness, says GaryPrebula, Ph.D., cinema professor at California StateUniversity, Long Beach. Prebula believes that duringthe turbulence of the ’60s and until the ’70s “Planetof the Apes” reacted to an important social move-ment of that era—civil rights.

In “Planet of the Apes” (1968), American astro-nauts crash-land on a planet run by apes who haveenslaved humans. The apes see humans as inferiorbeings with no rights, just as African Americans wereviewed by mainstream America. The police apes aresignificantly darker than the rulers and scientists.

These darker, armed apes can easily be read assymbols of the Black Power movement, and theirdomination of Whites as either positive or negative, depending on the viewer. To drive home the film’scivil rights subtext, in one scene fire hoses are turnedon unruly humans. Prebula maintains that viewingapes as African Americans would be politicallyincorrect. However, scenes of attacking dogs and firehoses could not have failed to put some viewers inmemory of the American South. Prebula remembersindependent science-fiction producer John Sayles, whom he feels produced one of the few progressivescience-fiction films of the 1980s., about a humanoidBlack alien slave fleeing White alien bounty hunters.

The Black alien crash-lands in New York City andtakes up residence in Harlem among other AfricanAmericans.

States around the nation, in an effort to addresswhat they allege are two issues of major concern—theflow of undocumented immigrants into their environsand the level of illegal voting—have passed a numberof controversial laws that are galvanizing opponents.

In Alabama, the state Legislature is currentlyrevisiting its anti-illegal immigration law House Bill56 and has presented a list of revisions it plans to useto tweak the legislation passed in 2011.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit, based in Atlanta, temporarily blocked the enforce-ment of two provisions of the Alabama law: Onevoiding contracts signed by those in the United Statesillegally and another prohibiting illegal immigrantsfrom having transactions with the state for services.

The effort to change the law is being pushed in partby some of the state’s business leaders, who are seeingthe harsh economic impact of the statute. It is also inresponse to the court’s blockage.

A new study by an economist at the University ofAlabama found the law would cause the state to lose70,000 to 140,000 jobs, $2.3 to $10.8 billion in grossdomestic product (1.3 to 6.2 percent of the state’seconomy) as well as potentially up to $264.5 millionin state income and sales taxes and as much as $93.1million in local taxes.

The report, produced by Samuel Addy, Ph.D., alsoprojects that the state economy could be reduced by$5.8 billion if 60,000 workers making an averageincome of $25,000 left Alabama.

Addy’s report also noted that illegal immigrantsmake up about 24 percent of the workers in the agri-culture, construction, food service and drinkingindustry, but says that business owners can not hireenough legal residents, even in a distressed economyto fill these jobs.

Among the changes being considered for HB 56under the new legislation HB 658 are:

•Increasing the penalty to 60 days instead of 10for businesses caught hiring illegal immigrants

•Simplifying the verification process for publicbenefits and services

•Revisions that would allow the state to ensurethat illegal immigrants cannot attend public collegesand universities.

•Clarifying that the reasonable suspicion calcula-tions occur upon the issuance of any traffic citationor upon any lawful arrest rather than upon any lawfulstop, detention or arrest.

•Expanding reasonable suspicion beyond the driv-er of a vehicle to include passengers in the event of atraffic citation or arrest.

The House of Representatives in neighboringMississippi just last week passed its anti-illegal immi-gration law, “Support Our Law Enforcement and SafeNeighborhood Act (HB 488).” The measure goes tothe state senate, where it is expected to be approvedand sent on to Gov. Phil Bryant, who says he sup-ports the measure.

The Southern Poverty Law Center has vowed tosue the state if the bill is passed.

The action is the product of a Republican-domi-nated Legislature and governor.

A number of other Southern states, includingLouisiana, Tennessee, South Carolina and Georgia, passed similar immigration laws at the start of theyear and these were all in the wake of a similar con-troversial law passed in Arizona in 2010.

The U.S. Supreme Court plans to consider a chal-lenge to Arizona's law in April.

The immigrant laws coupled with new VoterIdentification legislation passed in South Carolina inMay and signed by Republican Gov. Nikki Hayley havecivil rights organizations scrambling on multiple fronts.

In March, a number of groups, including theNAACP recreated the Selma to Montgomery Marchto address what they call attacks on civil rights gainsof the past.

The NAACP, alongside National Action Network,AFL-CIO, SEIU and several other civil, human andlabor rights groups from across the nation completedthe march from Selma to Montgomery on March 9 inprotest of the modern-day attacks on voting rightsand Alabama’s racial profiling law, HB 56. Themarch concluded with a rally on the steps of theAlabama state capitol.

“I marched this week for two reasons,” statedNAACP President and CEO Benjamin Jealous afterthe event. “I marched to honor the legacy of those whogave their time–and in some cases their lives–to securefor voting rights for all Americans and I marched toprotest the attacks on voting rights, immigrant rights, and workers’ rights that threaten to destroy all of theprogress this nation has made since the first marchfrom Selma to Montgomery in 1965. I am proud tostand with this coalition of all races, colors and creedsto fight like our predecessors did 47 years ago.”

“Working families have come under attack overthe last year or so,” stated AFL-CIO executive vicepresident Arlene Holt Baker. “Whether it be attackson our rights at work, losing our homes, attacks onvoting rights or threats to new immigrants. But theright to vote is the right that enables all other rights. This is why this year’s Selma to Montgomery marchis more important than ever. We must band togetherfrom all communities to ensure that every vote getscounted this year–and so that we are able to create aneconomic agenda that serves the 99 percent ratherthan just the top 1 percent.”

Wonders we hope will nevercease

BY DAVID L. HORNE, PH.DOW CONTRIBUTOR

Amid the malice, mayhem and mis-steps of our daily lives in America, thereare indeed wondrous things—plannedevents, natural occurrences, memorable people moments and thelike—that distract, inspire, and transcend us. Then and there we seeor hear or feel the immense possibilities still part of this greatAmerican multiplexity.

The cold winter heat of President Barack Obama’s inaugurationday, with the audacity of the president and first lady’s hand-in-handwalk along Pennsylvania Avenue, chagrining all of the Secret Servicepersonnel assigned that day; the towering glory of the 30-foot tall Dr.Martin Luther King Jr. statue dedicated on the Washington Mall in2011; and the random kindness interactions observed in Americanstreets, buildings, cafes and schools in recurring cycles, are all exam-ples of such wonder.

Another instance is the sight of 150-plus wild Chincoteagueponies in Virginia making their annual swim at low tide on the lastWednesday of every July across the Assateague Channel fromAssateague Island to neighboring Chincoteague Island, herded byChincoteague’s “Saltwater Cowboys.” After the swim, the poniesprance and parade to the adjoining public carnival grounds, wherethe new foals are auctioned off to individual bidders on the lastThursday in July.

On that following Friday, the adult ponies make their watery trekback to Assateague Island, where they roam in the wild for anotheryear. If you have not yet seen horses swimming in the ocean, inunpracticed relative unison, you’ve missed a treat.

On a recent visit to St. Croix, Virgin Islands, part of theAmerican-owned Caribbean chain formally colonized by Denmark,I got a chance to see a comparative version of the Virginia ritual, what I would call the Chocolate Saltwater Cowboys. A group ofyoung boys who clearly were highly skilled in this process swamracing thoroughbreds associated with the Randall “Doc” JamesRacetrack on the island through their training paces. Not once didany of the youngsters get kneed or hoofed by the underwater legs ofthe horses, they always stayed on the horses’ withers flank so theycould steer the horses expertly straight or in a circle, and the horsesnever seemed to panic, even when waves gently rolled over theirheads. It was a magnificent view of an unexpected pleasure. It wasalso a metaphor of the real resilience, ingenuity, and craftsmanshippossessed by the Cruzans, and other Virgin Islands citizens.

St. Croix, at 84-square miles, is the largest of the three mainislands that make up the Virgin Islands, along with St. Thomas, St.Johns, and Water Island. The combined territories were purchasedfrom Denmark for $25 million in gold in 1917 (equivalent toaround $460 million today), primarily as a war measure and as theUSA’s imperial expansion into the Caribbean.

Countries or nation-states intent on international influence andsignificance, had to have ownership of overseas territories orcolonies, it had regularly been decided by more than a legion ofEuropean and neo-European foreign policymakers. What madeEngland into Great Britain was indeed her expanding colonial pres-ence from the 17th to the 20th centuries, and the English ability toexploit those conquered territories for English benefit.

As have Guam, Wake Island, Samoa, the Puerto RicoCommonwealth, etc., the American Virgin Islands colonies havemade their contributions and continue to make more toward the

greatness of the USA. Unfortunately, that historical significance israrely taught to V.I. students. Instead, the standard educational orien-tation is to train Virgin Islanders to accept their perpetual inferiorityand grateful obligation to the USA mainland. The world still awaitsthe historical perspective and grand narrative that will someday beprovided by the African descendant population of the Virgin Islandsterritories that will explain and elucidate the singular significance ofthat group’s participation in America’s growth and development.

Meanwhile, we all will have to be content in recognizing changeagent champions in the islanders’ midst, when they rise above thefray and achieve noteworthy status in moving the population for-ward. Such is the Kahina family, led by parents and communityactivists KaRa and Chenzira, with a core of their young geniusesbeing trained to move St. Croix to higher ground economically, politically and logically.

Also among those luminaries is long-serving U.S.Congresswoman for the Virgin Islands, Donna Christensen (theV.I., since 1972, has been granted a non-voting seat in the U.S.House, and is a continuing member of the CBC), who has been inoffice since 1996. The new and trendy president of the University ofthe Virgin Islands, David Hall, Ph.D., is a mover and shaker forisland progress, as is radio station entrepreneur (WSTX Radio) andall-around renaissance man Kevin A. Rames.

Simone Palmer, owner of the Sand Castle on the Beach Hotel, isa marvel of Cruzan good will and let’s-do-it-together charm. GloriaI. Joseph, Ph.D., is a true community scholar, author, no-nonsenseelder and spirit guide for the future. Yaa Asantawaa is the new headof Fihankra in Ghana, and we must note that Gene Emanuel, Ph.D.,recently departed, was an academic warrior of a man with a greatplan for sparking national pride and independence, and his studentlegacy in St. Thomas, including Leslie, Darla and the new AfricanHeritage Committee (and hopefully, new Program in African andCaribbean Studies) are continuing on. These are but a few of themany island champions dedicated to changing the USA-V.I. para-digm for the greater good.

In white sandy beach heaven, the U.S. Virgin Islands is muchmore than the perfect tourist destination for peace, serenity andescapist fun. Amid the casinos and parimutuels of St. Croix, thecommercial glitz of St. Thomas, and the old world neighborhoodsof St. Johns, growing alongside the aromatic flora and fauna of theislands, is a new generation of Virgin Islanders intent on raising theterritories to the status and dignity many of their citizens believe theislands have earned, and which they richly deserve.

It is always a wonder to watch an idea whose time has comemerge with the youthful exuberance and skill necessary to bring itto full fruition. Strike up the junkanoo! Here comes the new andimproved St. Croix and the Virgin Islands—paradise has plans.

Dimitris Christoulas was a retired pharmacist whoseneighbors said he had enormous dignity. At 77 years old,he looked forward to a comfortable old age. He had savedduring his 35-year career and did not expect governmentto, at all, be involved in his pension.

But the austerity budget that Greece has imposed on itscitizens reduced Christoulas’ pension. So he killed himself, writing in a suicidenote that he would rather have “a decent end” than forage through garbage tofind enough “rubbage to feed myself.” Neighbors say he wanted to send a politi-cal message. They say the law-abiding man was a committed leftist, so meticu-lous that he paid his condo fees ahead before he took his life.

The Christoulas suicide has mobilized many in Greece, some of whomdescribe his act as one of fortitude, not simply despair. Some describe it as a“political act” because it took place in a public square during the morning rushhour. Generally, Greece has a lower level of suicide than the rest of the countriesin the European Union, but last year suicides rose by 45 percent, giving it, now,one of the highest rates. Many attribute the increase in suicides to the economiccrisis. Anecdotal cases are reported—of the anchorman who killed himselfwhen his contract was not renewed, of the couple with a disabled child whosepublic sector jobs were eliminated who threatened to throw themselves off abalcony, of a man who set himself on fire when a bank foreclosed on his home.

The United States is threatening an austerity budget. We are threatening, likeGreece, to balance the budget on the backs of the least and the left out, on thepoor and the needy. We have maintained the Bush tax cuts even though we donot need to, because Republicans want to respond to their donors, not to work-

ing people. And as I read thatthe Newt Gingrich healththink tank has gone bankrupt,I wonder that this man woulddare run for President of theUnited States when, he has setup a fiscal flimflam house(one of his creditors is hiswife).

President Obama had itexactly right when he railed

against Republican values. The most recent statistics about poverty point to itsupward trend not downward decline. To be sure, these data measure challengesbetween 2009 and 2010, and many think that when data come out in Septemberto speak to 2011, poverty rates may trend down, just as unemployment rateshave. At the same time, too many Americans live in hardship. The unemploy-ment rate in Greece is 21 percent. The unemployment rate in Black Americaexceeds 25 percent.

Yet, we Americans are docile recipients of our poverty and unemployment.Except for the Occupy movement, there has been extreme silence about ourcurrent conditions. Still the Christoulas suicide makes me wonder what silentacts of desperation Americans are experiencing because of economic austerity. How many robberies or suicides are economically motivated, and how many areunreported because they don’t take place in the public square? How many sen-iors are actually foraging for food, or lining up at soup kitchens because theydon’t have enough to eat? How many young brothers feel that they improvetheir lives by going to jail where they at least get “three hots and a squat”? Howmany folk care enough to explore these questions and find answers?

Christoulas has a bevy of friends who say he didn’t really commit suicide, that killing himself was a message and an act of protest against the ways thatGreece’s financial crisis has an unequal impact on the wealthy and the poor. While killing oneself is an extreme way to protest economic inequities, it hasalso been a way to rivet Greece’s national attention on the hardships that toomany in that country are facing. What does it take in the United States, withunemployment still high, with foreclosures still out of control, with too manypeople managing “underwater” mortgages? What would happen if the econom-ically aggrieved showed up in a public square? Would Mitt Romney or RickSantorum even pay attention?

The Christoulas suicide shines light on the human effects of austerity budg-ets, not just in Greece but also in the rest of the world. We should take heed ofhis public action, as it is repeated, though silently, behind closed doors.

McDade’s shooting by two Pasadena police offi-cers on the night of March 24 has raised serious anduncomfortable questions for city leaders.

Pasadena police officers Jeffrey Newlen andMathew Griffin, the pair involved in the shootingand now on administrative leave, said they thoughtMcDade was armed and claimed they shot him whenhe allegedly reached for his waistband.

McDade’s family disputes the claim that McDadewas reaching for his waistband when he was shot.

McDade’s family has hired a Beverly Hills lawfirm and filed a wrongful death lawsuit against thecity and the Pasadena police department.

According to the court documents in this case,McDade’s family alleges neither Newlen nor Griffinidentified themselves as police officers or saw any-thing in the teen’s hands or on his clothing to indicatehe had a weapon.

Griffin, the document alleges, fired multiplerounds at McDade from inside his vehicle, whileNewlen fired from outside his patrol car.

The documents also allege that McDade did notdie immediately, but instead was handcuffed and lefton the street for a “protracted period of time withoutadministering first aid.”

McDade later died at a hospital. The lawsuit also alleges that officers present at the

shooting scene conspired to suppress the truth.City News Service contributed to this story.

A reality show worthwatching

BY GAIL CHOICEOW CONTRIBUTOR

In a past article, I railedagainst two reality shows airingon VH1—“Basketball Wives”(Miami and L.A. telecasts) and “Love and Hip Hop.”This time I come in praise of a different type of reali-ty show airing on VH1: “Styled by June.”

What I like about this show is that it depicts aBlack woman following her dreams. Yes, the drama isstill there, but not what you’d expect. What we see isa woman using her gifts to help others see what theydon’t see in themselves.

Fashion is just about everyone’s passion at somepoint in their lives. And some women like JuneAmbrose make it their life’s work. Not only does shelook good, but she makes it a point to make otherslook good as well.

According to VH1, “Styled by June” isn’t just a

show about style, it’s a show about business. Lookand attitude are the keys to success. June is one ofvery few people—some would say the only person—who understands how to use the look to drive theculture, and then to drive the dollars.

VH1 goes inside the world of fashion in a uniquedocu-soap series with the ultimate “Curator ofStyle"—June Ambrose. She is the celebrity stylist. From Puffy to Jay-Z, she rebranded Hip-Hop asupscale in the 1990s. And in the 21st century, she hasreshaped and re-launched the careers of hundreds ofcelebs, including Mariah Carey, Mary J. Blige andWill Smith. June pushes the envelope and specializesin the unexpected, making us all stand up and takenotice.

The fashion world is one that I’m not familiarwith, but when I saw a promo featuring a Black

woman instructing a celebrity on how to change herimage, I was intrigued because June was verystraightforward and exercised patience while hercelebrity clients looked at her like she was crazy.

June is a triple threat. She is a design guru andstyling expert, a rebranding genius, and a rock momto boot (to two kids Chance, 10, and Summer, 7). Inthis series, June forges forward, revamping her clientswith her group of trusty assistants. There’s Eli, theneurotic but lovable style maverick, otherwise knownas her second husband. There’s Tukie, her marketeditor. If you want to get to June, you have to go

through Tukie first. And there’s Rachel, her newbieassistant. She’s a socialite/actress who’s trying to makeit in the fashion world but sometimes gets too caughtup in the chaos and fun of it all.

There’s more drama with Tukie and Rachelbecause he’s the one responsible for keeping her incheck. And, as often as she can, she keeps trying to“throw him under the bus” so she can shine.Although June is aware of the situation, she lets himhandle it because her star-studded clients give hermuch grief when she tells them she’s about to changetheir image, getting rid of what they believe makesthem stand out.

Currently, Jaleel White who starred as the king ofthe nerds, Urkel, in the 1990s comedy “FamilyMatters,” is a client of June’s. He is now appearing onABC’s “Dancing with the Stars “and he wants to getthe press and public to see him in a mature light thatwill ultimately re-energize his career. You can onlyimagine how upset he got when she suggested that heput on his signature suspenders that branded hisUrkel image.

VH1 makes it easy for viewers to learn moreabout the show and to catch up with old episodes.Just go tohttp://www.vh1.com/shows/styled_by_june/series.jhtml. There you will find full past episodes, sneakpeaks and more. And if you find you want more ofJune, just go to www.juniverse.com. It’s sure to keepyou up on the latest in fashions and more. VH1’s“Styled by June” airs Mondays at 9:30 and 11:30 p.m.
