Ladies and Gentlemen,

It is a great honour for me to be able to welcome you at the 24th session of COP24 Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC COP24) in Katowice. This place was not a random choice. Just 25 years ago smokestacks were dominating the city. Today, the capital of Silesia is famous for its cultural zone, numerous innovations in many areas of life and new technologies. And from the fact that it is one of the greenest cities in Poland, where forests constitute almost half of the area. I am convinced that the context of the location fits perfectly into the idea of the event. For the transformation in recent years shows how much this region has done to improve the climate.

COP24 in terms of the number of tasks to be completed and decisions to be taken, seems to be one of the most demanding and ambitious summits. I believe that thanks to the involvement of all the Parties, in an atmosphere of openness, trust and readiness for dialogue, we will be able to create a “Katowice Rulebook”, which will contain detailed operating rules of the Paris Agreement. I know that I can count on you because we have one goal – to reach an agreement acceptable to each Party. In accordance with this year’s COP - “Changing together” motto, we jointly decide to make changes. It is up to us how our future will look like. Together we can do more!

Ladies and Gentlemen,

I wish you, for the next two weeks, to feel here - in Katowice - like at home. And so that you can find here a good place to work, like-minded people, and maybe even friends. I believe that despite the hard work full of sacrifices, you will remember the time spent here with satisfaction and joy. I hope that Katowice and its great transformation will be an inspiration for the decisions made during COP24.

Looking forward to see at the conference!

Michał Kurtyka
