The students will review and consolidate their learning on Earn, Save, Spend and Donate through playing a board game.

Objectives

The students will recap on:

• Everything costs money and is hard-earned.

• A good saving habit helps everyone achieve goal.

• Understand needs and wants, and sometimes you have to wait to get what you want.

• Helping people in need with money, time and items will make this world a better place.

Session Outline

Introduction and Cha-Ching Music Video

Advise students that this is the last session.

Display the Cha-Ching music video: “Big Big Waste of Money”.

Discussion on Concepts

Recap the concepts of earn, save, spend and donate.

Activities and Presentation

Display the game rules of the board game. Divide students into groups of 6.

Students play the board game for 20 minutes.

Summary

Remind students that Earn, Save, Spend and Donate are important choices in their daily life to reach their personal goals and help others.

Teacher to distribute the Post-questionnaire to students for completion.

Congratulate students, present them with certificate and take a group photo with them.

Preparation

Review the activities and list of materials.

Familiarize yourself with the four money concepts, Earn, Save, Spend and Donate to better address possible questions from the students. See the definition on Page 65 to help you prepare. For visual learners, write all key terms on the board.

Arrange to present the certificate to each student at the close of the activities. Invite students to complete the post-questionnaire after the class and submit to teachers.

Step by Step Presentation

1. Introduction and Cha-Ching Music Video

Let the students know that this is the last session and hope they have enjoyed learning Earn, Save, Spend, and Donate.

Ask students the following questions. Invite a few answers from different students before revealing the answers of terms as noted on the side or answers as shown in the bracket.

• What are your choices around money? (Answer: Earn, spend, save, and donate.)

• What does Earn mean? Who does it? What does it allow us to buy? Is it easy orhard to earn money? (Answer: Parents earn. It allows us to buy things we needand want. It is hard to earn money.)

• What does Save mean? Why do we do it? (Answer: We save to achieve ourshort-term and long-term goal.)

• What does Spend mean? What should we think about before we spend money? (Answer: Before we spend, we need to understand whether we are spending forneeds or wants and to compare prices, alternatives, focus on goals, not beingdistracted by other wants etc.)

• What does Donate mean? What are the different ways you can donate? Whydo we do it? Do we get anything in return? How does it feel to give? (Answer: Wecan donate our time, items and money. We donate because we want to make thisworld a better place. We do not get anything in return. We feel happy and joyfulwhen we give.)

Explain to the students that the video they are about to watch answers the question, “How not to waste money?” Encourage students to watch attentively and see if they can see all the different ways that the characters prevent wasting money.

Show the following music video:

Save refers to keep money now for later use so as to realize short-term goals (e.g. buy a candy) or long term goals (e.g. go to university).

Ask the following questions about the video. Invite a few answers from different students before revealing the answer.

What are the different ways that the characters have wasted money?

• Justin and Pepper bought a pair of pants and shoes respectively but they did notfit. What should they have done instead? Why?

• Prudence bought a package of 10 lessons because it was cheaper to learn horseriding. But after the first lesson, she learned that she is allergic to horse and can’tcontinue. What should she have done instead? Why?

• Bobby dyed his hair because of how it looked on the box. What should he havedone instead? Why?

• Charity used a perfume that was endorsed by a celebrity. What should she havedone instead? Why?

• Zul believed an advertisement for hamburger but it was not the same asadvertised. What should he have done instead? Why?

• What you can do to avoid wasting money? (Answer: Try before you buy and notto be fooled by ads or pictures, consider whether the item is fit for us, think aboutis it a need or a want.)

Explain to students that we are going to play a board game to recap the learning on Earn, Save, Spend and Donate. Divide students into groups of 6. Display the board game, chess pieces and “Earn/Save/Spend/Donate” cards. Explain the rules of the game.

Materials• 1 game board• 1 money holder• 12 chess pieces• 1 dice• 1 Earn / Save / Spend / Donate cards (12 cards per sheet)• 5 sheets of 5 money notes, 5 sheets of 10 money notes and 2 sheets of 50 money

notes (21 notes per sheet)

Getting Ready!

• Every student will roll the dice to determine the order of the game. The studentwith highest number shall go first. And the student to his/her left will go second.

• To start the game, every student will take turn to draw an “Earn Card” to earnmoney (no rolling of dice is required).

• Following the initial round of earning money, students shall take turns to roll thedice and move the 1st chess piece clockwise along the game board.

• Only one chess piece can be played at any time. The 2nd chess piece can be played only after the 1st chess piece has reached “Cha-Ching”

How to play

• If the chess piece lands on “Earn” station, the student shall draw an “Earn Card” and perform the assigned task to earn money. Collect the money earned fromthe Money Holder.

• If the chess piece lands on “Save” station, the student shall draw a “Save Card” and make the decision stated. Money saved shall be placed in the Bank Accountor Money Box in the Money Holder. If the student runs out of money to performthe save decision, the chess piece will have to move back 4 stations (no drawingof card is required)

• If the chess piece lands on “Spend” station, the student shall draw a “SpendCard” and make the decision stated. Money spent shall be returned to the MoneyHolder. Student can withdraw from the Bank Account or Money Box to spend,but if the student runs out of money, the student shall go bankrupt and the chess piece has to restart from the beginning

• If the chess piece lands on “Donate” station, the student shall draw a “DonateCard”, and make the decision stated on the respective card. The decision may ormay not result in using money.

• For each turn, student shall only draw one card. If the card requires student tomove the chess piece, the student does not draw a second card upon landing ona new station.

How to win

• After the 1st chess piece has reached the goal “Cha-Ching”, the student can movethe 2nd chess piece.

• The first student with both chess pieces reaching the goal “Cha-Ching” shall bethe winner.

Explain to students that they have about 20 minutes to play. If the round is over before 20 minutes, the students can play the game again.

When time is up, request students to help pack up. The board games can be kept in the Board Game Bag and leave it in the classroom for students to play anytime. Teacher will collect the Board Games from different groups.

4. Summary

Review with the students the following questions:• Which is your most favourite station? Why?

• How do you like the “Earn” activities?

• Did you save a lot of money? Why / Why not?

• How did you make your spending decisions?

• How did you choose to donate?

Explain to students that the cards in this board game help them recap the things that they have learned in the previous sessions. The more familiar they are with the concepts of Earn, Save, Spend and Donate, the more effective they would become in using money to set goals and reach them.
