Overview of the War

• World War 1 was also known as the Great War.

• There were two sides of the war:

• Allies: Russia, Britain, and France

• Central Powers: Austria, Germany, and Hungary.

• The United States enters the war in 1917 under President Woodrow Wilson

• Woodrow Wilson called on Americans to “Make the world safe for democracy.”

Technology

• New military technology: trench warfare, use of gas, use of heavy artillery.

• First major trench line was finished in 1914.

• At least 12,000 miles of trenches when the war ended.

Types of Trenches

• Allies used four types of trenches:

• Front Line trench - 50 yards to one mile from the German’s front trench: attack trench

• Support Trench - several hundred yards behind the front line trench: men and supplies

• Reserved Trenches - several hundred yards behind the Support Trenches: had men and supplies for backup.

• Communication Trenches - connected other trenches: messages

The War Ends

• War lasted 1,500 days, about four years.

• Official armistice called on November 11, 1918

• 9 million people dead.

• Four empires collapsed.
