Overview of the Magazine Industry The origins of the magazine industry in my opinion are debateable but I believe it was in 1586 when a Swiss painter published information about the fashion of the day. The first published magazine was in 1663 in Germany. Since then a few other magazines had been released then the first women’s magazine was published in 1770. Other magazines were being published then in 1923 the US new magazine Time was published and was the first news magazine in the US. Since then various magazines for various genres were being published. In 2014 69% of the overall audience brought digital/Print editions of magazines with 16% using Mobile Web. 1% was videos and 14% was Web (Desktop/Laptop). Also there was a 10% gross increase in 2014 from 2013. Magazines at the moment are the No.1 advertising engagement. The most read media in the US is Newspapers at 50.7%. Also magazines are the number one media for advertising engagement. The top selling magazine in the UK and Ireland as of February 2015 is TV Choice, which had approximately 1,200,000 sales. The top magazine for circulation worldwide is The Watchtower magazine, which is a religious illustrated magazine. It is has approximately 52 million issue’s per circulation and it’s frequency is monthly. The magazine was founded in 1879. It’s published in 228 different languages. The gross audience of magazine media increased by 10% from August 2013 to August 2014. The percentage of printed magazine media has dropped from 74% to 69%, also Desktop/Laptop magazines have dropped from 16% to 14%. However the Mobile Web format has increased from 9% to 16%. This shows that electrical handheld copies of the magazines are preferred. This will includes devices such as iPods, tablets, kindles and mobile phones. This relates to the average consumer being a middle class, mainstreamer audience who has approximately 2.4 children.
