An Overview ofPresented By: Dr. Shafiq Ur Rehman Assistant Professor, DLIS, PU

IntroductionI am working an Assistant Professor in DLIS, University of the Punjab. I am author of more than 20 research publications (HEC recognized) and presented ten research papers in international conferences. I am an approved PhD supervisor of HEC and teaching and supervising post graduate students. I have conducted more than ninety workshops as a resource person (online and onsite). I am listed trainer of different research softwares like NVIVO (Australia), Endnote (USA) and Idea Puzzle. My current research interests are Qualitative Research , Academic writing , Research Ethics, Mixed Method Research , Information Literacy, Plagrism, and computer application in Research

NVivo is software that helps you easily organize and analyze unstructured information, so that you can ultimately make better decisions.

What is NVivo

Many qualitative researchers are interested in evaluating, interpreting and explaining social phenomena. Unstructured or semi-structured data like interviews, field notes, web pages and journal articles.Work in a range of sectors; from social science and education to healthcare and business. Nvivo & Qualitative Research

NVivo is designed to facilitate common qualitative techniques for organizing, analyzing and sharing data.

Methodologies Nvivo Support

Compared to manual coding tools, computer-based analytical tools such as NVivo make it much easier to apply multiple themes to the same section of text, to remove existing coding, to organize themes/nodes into a hierarchy of nodes, to perform powerful and complicated queries, and to model the relationships identified from coding. How can NVivo Help Your Analysis

Doctoral research Roadmap

How do you approach your research Project

Bring in interview documents Open and explore the interviewsSome participantstalk about balance this is interesting!Make a node to collect all the referencesDo other people talkabout balance too? Run a Text Search query to find outGather the query results in your balance node and review all the material in one placeDisplay a word tree to see how people talk about balanceRecord your insights and use this memo when you write up your projectSources are your research materials including documents, PDFs, datasets, audio, video, pictures, memos and framework matrices. Coding is the process of gathering material by topic, theme or case. For example, selecting a paragraph about water quality and coding it at the node water quality.

NVivo Key Terms

Nodes are containers for your codingthey let you gather related material in one place so that you can look for emerging patterns and ideas.Free nodes Have no relationships. They represent big ideas, and may used initially to begin sorting information.Tree nodes Are hierarchical and related in some identifiable manner. Tree nodes can be Parent or Child.

Cont

Source classifications let you record information about your sourcesfor example, bibliographical data. Node classifications allow to you record information about people, places or other cases for example, demographic data about people.

Cont

The following system requirements are recommended for optimum performance: 2.0 GHz Pentium 4-compatible processor or faster 2 GB RAM or more 1280 x 1024 screen resolution or higher Microsoft Windows XP SP2 or later, or Microsoft Windows Vista SP1 or later, or Microsoft Windows 7, or Microsoft Windows 8 Approximately 4 GB of available hard-disk space (additional hard-disk space may be required for NVivo projects) Internet Explorer 8 or later, or Google Chrome 21 or later Internet connection

Additional requirements if you want to install and use NVivos supplementary add-ons: For NCapture: Internet Explorer 8 or later, or Google Chrome 21 or later For the NVivo Add-In for OneNote: Microsoft OneNote (2007 or 2010) and Microsoft Word (2007 or 2010)

NVivo System Requirements

Myth 1: NVivo is for all types of research method .Myth 2: NVivo will do the analysis for you.Unlike quantitative analytical packages (e.g., SPSS, STATA, SAS), Nvivo does not have dierent types of models already incorporated as options. The analysts have to interpret the textual data and come up with a model to explain the apparent relationships. NVivo is just a tool to facilitate the researcher's thinking it does not do the thinking for the researcher. Hence, the researcher's interpretations of the data and knowledge of the subject area are irreplaceable.Myth 3: With NVivo, it takes no time to finish a qualitative project.
