Welcome

Welcome to Overton and Basingstoke Taekwondo Club.

Through your training in Taekwondo we hope you will gain an ever-increasing understanding of the Korean Martial Arts. The balanced physical programme of training will provide you with an understanding of the art of Taekwondo and improve your general fitness. Many other rewards come from dedicated training: speed, balance, power, endurance, self-confidence, self-discipline, flexibility, respect and importantly friendship. Your instructors and fellow students are here to support you in the journey you have begun. Martial arts training can continue for a lifetime; there are always new things to learn and old techniques to perfect. It is a journey that has many rewards and from which you can gain pleasure, friendship and a balanced fitness.

What is Taekwondo?

Taekwondo is a Korean Martial Art which combines the sharp, strong angular movements seen in Karate with the graceful and circular motions of Kung Fu. With the addition of its own devastating kicking techniques, Taekwondo is an integrated system of self defence and personal improvement.

Taekwondo training addresses the whole body. You will improve your strength, stamina, speed, flexibility and coordination. Along with a variety of effective hand and foot techniques, these physical skills build a fundamental base for self-defence that can be perfected through dedicated practice.

Taekwondo training consists of many elements; basic techniques, patterns, self-defence, breaking, pre-arranged sparring and free sparring. These are all part of the art. However, the art is more than just the physical training. As you progress, you will gain an understanding of the philosophy of Taekwondo, of the “do” or “the way” that represents the spirit and meaning behind the physical training.

Taekwondo is based on the principle of self-defence. Offensive moves are taught only for protection and to be used as a last resort. You should always follow the tenets of Etiquette, Modesty, Perseverance, Self-control and Indomitable Spirit

The road to the coveted Black Belt is filled with many individual obstacles. There are no short cuts and no mystical practices that will instantly make you a Black Belt. It is through hard work and dedicated practice that you will progress through the coloured belts gradually gaining in skill and understanding, eventually reaching the Black Belt; which in itself is just the start of the next journey which may last a lifetime. To be a truly successful student of Taekwondo you must learn to enjoy the journey rather than worry too much about the destination.

Overton and Basingstoke Taekwondo Club

Overton and Basingstoke Taekwondo Club was founded by Master Gerry Reilly in 1997. The club which started as a small group based out of the Overton Recreation Centre has now grown to be one of the largest clubs in Hampshire, with classes in Basingstoke and Overton.

Master Gerry Reilly has trained under Grandmaster Mark Biddlecombe since 1988 and has also had the opportunity to train with many other instructors including Grandmaster Park Hae Man, the late Grandmaster Cha Sok Park, Grandmaster Vincent Cheong, Grandmaster Lindsay Lawrence, Master Val Winteridge and Master Pat Donnelly.

The club also benefits from several other instructors including Master Kevin Hanks, Master Lynne Firth, Graham Soane, Sue Thorn, Raul Carpio and Deborah Hanks who take a full role in teaching.

The club’s growth has come about because of the commitment of the instructors and students of the club. The club is unique in the area in that it is run with the objective of providing high quality training in Taekwondo to the broadest possible audience and not for personal gain.

From the very start in 1997, all instructors have been volunteers and have not taken payment for the running of the classes. The technical aspects of the club such as the training syllabus, competitions and class programme are managed by the club’s Instructors Committee, which consists of all of the club’s British Taekwondo Council (BTC) Registered Instructors.

In 2003, the club became the first Taekwondo club anywhere in England to be accepted for registration as a charity. The trustees of the charity manage the administration of the club. As a charity, the club is run with the objective of providing an opportunity to train in the Korean martial arts to as wide a community as possible, with its constitution and finances openly available for inspection on the charity commission website.

As a community based club, we consider our participation in external activities important to us. Each year the club participates in the annual Basingstoke sports exchange with Euskirchen in Germany. This is an opportunity for competition, fun and friendship

Since 1998 the club has run an Annual Children’s Summer School. The school has proven to be popular with both existing students and also total beginners.

For the first time in 2006, we ran a successful charity event in support of Sport Relief which we repeated in 2008.

In January 2007, the club opened its permanent fully matted dojang in Essex Road as a base for all of its Basingstoke classes. Following the success of our first dedicated dojang, in October 2010, the club moved to a new and much larger facility at Vickers Business Centre.

Overton and Basingstoke Taekwondo Club is affiliated to Taekwondo Chungdokwan Great Britain (TCGB). TCGB is a member group of the World Taekwondo Federation National Governing Body for the UK, the British Taekwondo Control Board (BTCB).

Page 9: Overton and Basingstoke Taekwondo Club - Obtkd Handbook Edition 5.pdf · Student Handbook Edition 5 . Approved by the Overton and Basingstoke Taekwondo Club ... Board to help unify

4

All our students become individual members of TCGB and through TCGB hold individual membership and insurance with the British Taekwondo Control Board. All our instructors hold current instructor insurance and an enhanced Criminal Records Bureau check.

The club remains committed to all its students whether they train for recreation and fun or have ambitions to compete in Taekwondo at the highest possible level. The club teaches a full curriculum covering all the aspects of Taekwondo as a martial art and is not just focused on competition. However there are plenty of opportunities for competition for those who are interested.

Regular competition is available in all of the competition disciplines within Taekwondo (poomsae, sparring, speed breaking and power breaking). There are opportunities to compete at all levels from local novice events to international class. Students have access to both the national poomsae and sparring squads should they have the desire and talent to be considered for international competition. The club is the only Taekwondo club in the Basingstoke area to hold membership of the BTCB, and therefore the only club through which students have access to Olympic level competition.

Taekwondo Chungdokwan Great Britain

Overton and Basingstoke Taekwondo Club is a Full Member of Taekwondo Chungdokwan Great Britain (TCGB). All students of the club have individual membership of TCGB.

TCGB is a Group Member of The British Taekwondo Control Board. The BTCB is the World Taekwondo Federation National Governing Body for the UK. As individual members of TCGB, students also hold individual membership of the BTCB and have access to all BTCB seminars, courses, tournaments and international squads.

TCGB is the second oldest Taekwondo Group in the UK. Taekwondo was brought to the UK in 1967 by Grandmaster Rhee Ki Ha who founded the United Kingdom Taekwondo Association (UKTA). When the World Taekwondo Federation was formed in 1973, several instructors left the UKTA to start training in the WTF style under Grandmaster Fred Lee. Gradually some of these instructors worked together more closely and linked up with the Chungdokwan in Korea under the guidance of Grandmaster Park Hae Man. Finally in 1982, TCGB was officially formed under the presidency of Master Vincent Cheong, then a 6th Dan Black Belt, now 9th Dan. In May 2007, TCGB decided to affiliate as a Group Member to the British Taekwondo Control Board to help unify and strengthen WTF Taekwondo in the UK.

TCGB is recognised as the governing body for the Chundgokwan in the UK.

The Chungdokwan is the oldest of the Kwans (schools) in Taekwondo and provides us with both a historic link to the origins of Taekwondo and an opportunity for our students and instructors to continue to train with some of the most senior instructors in the world.

Grading Syllabus

The club teaches a broad martial arts syllabus covering the full spectrum of sparring, poomsae, 1-step, 3-step, destruction and self-defence. This is reflected in the grading syllabus.

Gradings, which are held regularly, are intended to provide you with the opportunity to show that you have mastered the requirements of your current level and are ready to move onto the next stage of training.

Before each grading, the instructors will assess which students are ready to grade. This assessment is based on progress since their last grading, knowledge and understanding of the requirements of the grade, class attendance and general attitude to training. At more senior grades (2nd Kup and above) students will be expected to have demonstrated that they are committed to the club through, for example, more regular training, support for club events and assisting in classes, at tournaments and at Kup gradings.

If your instructor feels that you are ready to grade, and you have completed the minimum training time since your last grading, you will be invited to grade. You are only permitted to grade when invited to do so by your instructor.

The grade structure used by Overton and Basingstoke Taekwondo Club is the standard Kukkiwon grade structure. This consists of 10 Kup grades (from White Belt/10th Kup to Black Tag/1st Kup), and 9 Dan grades (from 1st Dan Black Belt to 9th Dan Black Belt).

Gradings test the understanding of Taekwondo at the current grade and also of all previous grades. Therefore, you should be prepared to show all techniques and poomsae up to and including those for your current grade.

Grading examinations are conducted by the club instructors holding a minimum rank of 4th Dan Black Belt.

In addition to the technical aspects of the grading, the examiners may require you to demonstrate fitness, balance, coordination, etc. This may take the form of fitness exercises such as press-ups or sit-ups. You (and especially for more senior grades) may also be asked to hold a particular technique (e.g. side kick) for a period of time to demonstrate balance, coordination and correct body posture.

Results from a grading will be available within two weeks of the grading. If you do not achieve a pass level you will be given detailed feedback on the areas on which you need to improve to achieve a satisfactory level. However, regardless of your result, you are encouraged to ask the instructors for more detailed feedback on your performance.

The possible results of a grading are

• Double Promotion: awarded for exceptional performance.

• Credit: performance significantly above that expected for the grade.

• Pass: satisfactory performance.

• Probation: overall satisfactory performance but below required standard in one area. The candidate may be required to retest in class in the specified area.

• Fail: below standard required for the grade. Candidate will be required to retest at a future grading. There will be no retest fee.

Page 12: Overton and Basingstoke Taekwondo Club - Obtkd Handbook Edition 5.pdf · Student Handbook Edition 5 . Approved by the Overton and Basingstoke Taekwondo Club ... Board to help unify

7

Gradings for Black Belts / Dan Grades are held separately twice a year. The core syllabus for these gradings is set by the Technical Director of TCGB and may be varied from time to time. The club has a set syllabus for 1st and 2nd Dan candidates that extends this core syllabus especially in those areas that reflect the expectations that are placed on these ranks within Overton and Basingstoke Taekwondo Club. In addition to the technical aspects of the black belt requirements, senior ranks are expected to show commitment to the club through regular participation in senior belt training, instructor courses, seminars and assisting at Kup gradings. The minimum training times shown in the syllabus are absolute, no exceptions will be made and it is expected that most students will not grade on the minimum interval.

The syllabus for ranks of 3rd Dan and above is that set by TCGB. However, candidates for 3rd Dan and above will be expected to have demonstrated their commitment to instructing and furthering the development of the club.

If you are transferring from another recognised Taekwondo club, you will have your existing rank assessed by a grading examiner. In most cases for Kup grades the examiner will be looking to recognise you at your current grade. However, some Taekwondo clubs promote much faster and at a younger age than our club considers appropriate. In these cases recognition is likely to be at a rank appropriate your training experience as well as your technical ability. Dan grades that hold either a Kukkiwon certificate or whose grading was conducted by an examiner of at least 6th Dan Kukkiwon will have their rank recognised automatically. All other Dan grades will have their rank reviewed by the club with the TCGB Technical Director.

How to Succeed at a Grading

The following notes are intended to help you understand how to achieve your best at gradings. The guidance should also be considered during normal training.

Appearance, Attitude and Etiquette

The grading starts when you enter the Dojang. You should wear a clean dobok with the belt tied correctly. All jewellery must be removed and any piercing that cannot be removed must be covered. Long hair should be tied back.

You should show good etiquette at all times by bowing when entering or leaving the Dojang and by addressing all examiners and officials as Sabumn.

Basics

Basic techniques and basic combinations should be executed with spirit, use of the correct weapon (part of hand or foot), showing use of reaction force and focusing on the target.

Patterns

Knowledge of the steps of a pattern is not sufficient. All patterns must be executed at the correct speed, showing full use and understanding of reaction force, techniques delivered with accuracy and power to the correct target and maintaining focus and concentration. Finally, there must be clear evidence of spirit by good breath control and a clear sharp kihap.

Revision sheets for both the basic kibon patterns and the poomsae can be found in this handbook. However, these should be used as revision and not to learn new patterns, as there are many important aspects that cannot be shown in brief descriptive sheets.

Poomsae represents the technical heart of Taekwondo and so failure to perform adequately at the appropriate standard for the grade in this section of the grading will be assessed as a fail result. For more senior grades to

Page 13: Overton and Basingstoke Taekwondo Club - Obtkd Handbook Edition 5.pdf · Student Handbook Edition 5 . Approved by the Overton and Basingstoke Taekwondo Club ... Board to help unify

8

pass the poomsae section of the grading, it is not sufficient to just demonstrate knowledge of the movements but also to show high quality and forceful execution of the techniques.

One Step Pre-Arranged

Combinations should show a range of both hand and leg techniques. They should be executed without hesitation and should demonstrate appropriate speed, accuracy, intent but most importantly control. You should display techniques that you can effectively demonstrate and that are within the syllabus up to and including your grade. Well-executed simple combinations are better than unrealistic, over-elaborate and impractical combinations that are ineffective. At 6th Kup and 5th Kup gradings the techniques may be demonstrated if the examiners consider that this will assist the candidates. Candidates grading for 2nd Kup and above will be expected to demonstrate at least one takedown, which must be effective, clearly break their partners balance and be executed with control.

Good etiquette must be shown at all times. Attackers must show good spirit and attack with a clear well directed punch to either the chin or the solar plexus. Defenders must respond without hesitation. Attackers must remain in position until the attacker signals, with a final kihap, that their combination is complete. If the combination involves a takedown, the defender must inform the attacker before the start of that combination and should demonstrate good control and consideration for their partner’s safety. This principle also applies if the defender wishes to defend against a high section punch.

Three Step Pre-Arranged

Students may be asked to perform a pre-defined set of techniques. The intention of this aspect of the syllabus is to develop accurate and effective blocking techniques.

You will be expected to demonstrate the techniques accurately at the target height of the punch and without hesitation. The block should use reaction force and be delivered with sufficient power to displace the oncoming attack..

Breakfalls

The performance of breakfalls should show that you can safely be taken down and protect your head. For senior grades, candidates are expected to show that this can be achieved from a full standing height.

Self Defence

Defence must be effective and demonstrate correct execution of technique without hesitation. The defender must show control and protect the safety of their partner. This is of particular importance for any takedowns or locks. Use of excessive force will be penalised.

Breaking

Breaking should be taken seriously. The techniques should be executed with the correct part of the foot or hand and with spirit. Special attention should be given to the target to protect the safety of the board holder. The strike should always be delivered to the centre of the board. Normally, the break will be executed against a 2cm thick pine board; however, this may be varied to ensure that an appropriate challenge is set for the candidate.

If you are under 16 and grading up to red belt, you will not be expected to break. However, you may be asked to demonstrate the technique as a break on a lightweight re-breakable board or pad. At black tag and Dan grade, you will be expected to break, however the techniques chosen will be limited to those considered safe for your age.

Page 14: Overton and Basingstoke Taekwondo Club - Obtkd Handbook Edition 5.pdf · Student Handbook Edition 5 . Approved by the Overton and Basingstoke Taekwondo Club ... Board to help unify

9

Sparring

One-for-one technique sparring may be called at any grade. This should be executed on the spot showing a full range of techniques executed quickly and with good control. During one-for-one sparring, students must demonstrate equal use of both sides, and show a range of kicks and hand techniques.

Free sparring is required for more senior grades. This may be either no contact without protective equipment, or light contact wearing a hogu. The club will provide a hogu if you do not have your own. If you are grading for a grade above Blue Belt / 4th Kup you will be required to have your own basic protective equipment with you at the grading.

You will be expected to demonstrate:-

• Understanding of WTF sparring rules

• Use of both attacking and counter-attacking skills

• Footwork

• Ring management

• Spirit

• Control

• Distance

Unless otherwise directed, sparring is to WTF rules. Kicks can be targeted to mid and high sections, punches to middle section only. At very senior grade, these rules may be varied by the examiners.

If two-onto-one or increased multiple attacker sparring is called, the normal rules are varied but will be set by the examiners before the sparring commences. The attackers may only use standard WTF techniques; however, the defender may push, hold, sweep and grab. This style of sparring will only be called at very senior grades and must be conducted safely. All sweeps and holds must be conducted with high levels of control. Any grabs to the leg must be released immediately, otherwise serious injury can occur.

Required Theory/Philosophy

Tying the Belt

There are several ways to tie the belt. However, whatever approach is adopted, the belt should always be tied with both ends of an even length with a neat knot at the centre. The following approach will result in a tidy belt

• Hold the belt in the middle with the ends hanging evenly.

• Place the middle of the belt against your belly button.

• Wrap it around once or twice (depending on length of belt) and bring both ends back to the front.

• Bring the left end up to the middle.

• Overlap the right end up and then tuck it behind and under both layers.

• Pull both ends out making sure they are both even.

• Tie a square knot by bringing the right end under and over the left.

• Pull both ends even and make sure the knot is in the middle.

• Make sure the belt ends are even length and hang downwards in front.

Taekwondo Chungdokwan Philosophy and Traditions

Chung Do Kwan Training Oath

1. We, as members, train our spirits and bodies according to the strict code. 2. We, as members, are united in mutual friendship. 3. We, as members, will comply with regulations and obey our instructors.

Basic Etiquette

1. Always bow when entering or leaving the dojang. 2. The dobok should be clean and neat with the belt correctly tied at all times. 3. Address instructors as Sabumn unless told to do otherwise. 4. Students line up in class with the most senior student to the front right and then in decreasing rank to the

left. Students on second and subsequent lines should be immediately behind the student on the front line. Students of the same rank line up according to who graded to the rank first.

5. Class starts by the instructor leading a bow to the flags, and then the senior student leading a bow to the instructor.

6. If a master grade enters the dojang, training should pause, the class bows to the master grade, and then the class should immediately resume their training.

7. Show respect and control when working with your partners. You should bow to your partner before starting any work with them and at the end of the work.

8. There should not be excessive or loud talking in class. 9. Willingly assist others in their training. 10. Class finishes with the instructor leading a bow to the flags, the senior student leading a bow to the

instructor, and the next most senior student leading a bow to the senior student.

Chungdokwan Traditions

• Observe the true martial art spirit as a personal code: Honour, Integrity, and Fighting Spirit.

• As members always aim to advance in knowledge and rank and to help those with less knowledge and rank.

• Lower ranks shall obey higher ranks; higher ranks shall not abuse or take advantage of this authority.

• Take care at all times to avoid injury to yourself and fellow trainees.

• Do nothing to disgrace yourself, Dojang and instructor, or the Art.

• Never use techniques learned in the Dojang except in defence of yourself, family, or country.

• Never teach techniques learned in the Dojang to any person who is not a member of the Dojang without express permission of your instructor.

• If at any time members are involved in an incident involving violence, the Senior Instructor should be notified as soon as possible.

• Members accused of unreasonable conduct away from the Dojang (showing off, intimidation, deliberate fighting, unauthorized teaching, or in any other way abusing or debasing Taekwondo) will be subject to sanction under the Dojang’s code of conduct and disciplinary procedure.

Equipment Requirements

You can begin training in a tracksuit bottoms and a t-shirt, or similar. No special equipment is required.

After a month, you should buy a Taekwondo Uniform called a dobok. These are available through the club at a reasonable price. Kup grade students wear a plain white dobok. Kup grade students should not wear a dobok with a coloured v-neck except for club supplied children’s summer doboks. Black belts wear a plain white dobok with a black v-neck. A master’s dobok with black stripes on shoulders and legs may only be worn by master grades (4th Dan and above).

The dobok is the only basic equipment required. Once you have progressed to green belt / 6th Kup, you will be expected to have bought a set of shin and arm guards plus a groin guard. These are essential for anyone attending tournament classes, no matter what grade. This equipment should be brought to all classes, not just specific sparring training and competitions.

Jewellery must not be worn as it is a potential danger to both you and your training partners. If the jewellery can not be removed, it must be covered at all times to prevent injury. A plain wedding band may be worn in class provided that it does not have any raised edges. In competition all jewellery must be removed.

Hair should be tied back during training and in particular, at gradings.

Training is normally undertaken in bare feet. This allows for proper development of foot position in techniques and improves balance. However martial arts shoes may be worn with the permission of the instructor when you have injuries or the floor is unsuitable for bare foot training. Shoes may not be worn during sparring or gradings.

Many students also choose to buy their own body armour and head guard. The club will provide these for tournaments and sparring training but, by having their own, you can ensure that a correct size will always be available and that you get used to the feel and fit of your own equipment.

All necessary equipment can be purchased through the club at a competitive price. If however, you choose to purchase from outside of the club, any equipment must be World Taekwondo Federation approved.

Appendix A. Code of Conduct

Introduction

This code of conduct and standards of behaviour policy applies to all students within the club.

The aim of this is to

• Outline the standards that are required within the club

• Outline the responsibilities we expect from our students

The code of conduct and standards of behaviour policy is based on

• The fundamental concept of respect

• The tenets of Taekwondo

• The Chungdokwan oath and statement of traditions

Fundamental Concept

Underpinning the philosophy of the club is the concept of respect. This is respect for yourself, respect for others and respect for the rules.

Tenets of Taekwondo

In addition to the fundamental concept of respect the club promotes and expects adherence to the five tenets of Taekwondo. These being-

Etiquette - Be polite and show respect to all others at all times, including your fellow students and your instructor.

Modesty - Have confidence in your abilities, but never think you are better than anyone else. Always remain humble and thankful for your abilities.

Perseverance - No matter what, keep going! You may be tired or frustrated, but try not to show weakness by allowing your emotion to control your abilities. Learn from feedback from your instructor and others and keep training hard to improve.

Self-control - Always remain in control of your emotions and abilities and channel them into positive outcomes. Never let anger get the better of you!

Indomitable Spirit - The will and passion to keep going in the face of difficult or adverse situations. Never give up hope and strive hard to overcome anything that gets in your way.

Penalties

It is recognized that there may be occasions where a student breaches the code of conduct and standards of behaviour outlined.

For minor breaches a class Instructor will handle the breach in class. This may on occasion require a student to sit out for a part of the class. At their discretion an Instructor may choose to report this to a parent.

Students are reminded that part of criteria in being able to move forward in their grade, is their positive behavior in class.

More serious breaches will be dealt with in accordance with the Overton and Basingstoke Taekwondo Club Disciplinary Policy.

Conclusion

This code of conduct and standards of behaviour policy has been developed to outline the standards and responsibilities we expect from all our students.

We encourage all students to take responsibility for maintaining their own standards, recognising that all actions have consequences (both positive and negative), which they can determine.

This code of conduct is based on the tenets and traditions of Taekwondo. It recognises the need to provide a safe environment in which to learn and develop.

Appendix B. Anti-Bullying Policy

Introduction

Taekwondo as a martial art, particularly in its competitive aspects, can provide an environment for a bully.

It is the policy of the club to protect all students participating in Taekwondo from bullying.

The club takes the issue of bullying seriously and as such has developed this policy to address this issue.

It applies to all students, parents of students and Instructors.

Fundamental Concept

The underlying concept is respect. Respect for yourself, respect for others and respect for the rules.

Definition

Bullying is not easy to define; it can take many forms and is usually repeated over a period of time.

Nancy Quinn, in Bullying, a survival guide, produced by the BBC education, defines bullying as

“repeated (systematic) aggressive verbal physiological conduct by an individual or group against another person or persons”.

Bullying is not limited to an adult bullying a young person; it is often the case that the bully is young person.

It is an individual who has learnt how to gain power over others.

Bullying may be;

• Verbal eg. Racist or homophobic remarks, threats, name calling

• Physical eg. Hitting, kicking, theft

• Emotional eg. Persistent negative feedback, isolation of an individual from activities

• Sexual eg. Unwanted physical contact or abusive comments

All of these will include;

• Deliberate hostility and aggression towards a victim

• A victim who is weaker and less powerful than the bully or bullies

• An outcome which is always painful and distressing to the victim

89

Other Forms of Behaviour

Bullying behaviour, which may be seen as less obvious may also include;

• Other forms of violence

• Sarcasm, spreading rumours, persistent teasing

• Tormenting, ridiculing, humiliations

• Racial taunts, graffiti, gestures

• Unwanted physical contact, abusive or offensive comments of sexual nature

• A parents who pushes too hard

• A coach or parent who adopts a win at all costs approach

• A competitor who intimidates others

• A spectacular who shouts abuse

Signs of Bullying

The damage caused by a bully cannot be underestimated. It can cause considerable distress to the extent that the health and/or development of the individual concerned are harmed. Signs that an individual is being bullied include the following;

• Behavioural changes eg. Reduced concentration, becoming withdrawn, clingy, depressed, tearful, emotionally up and down, reluctance to attend school or work, training or sports club.

• A drop off in performance at school/work or standard of Tae Kwon Do

• Physical signs eg. Stomach aches, headaches, difficulties in sleeping, scratching and bullying, damage to clothes, binging.

• Shortage of money or frequent loss of possessions

Reporting Of Bullying

In the first instance, incidents of bullying should be reported to the class instructor.

Where the incident of bullying involves the Class Instructor, this should be reported to the Child Protection Officer.

All reported incidents of bullying should be recorded and reported to the Instructors Committee.

All students, parents and instructors should be alert to signs of bullying and refer cases promptly; failure to respond to incidents may be interpreted as condoning the behaviour. Overton & Basingstoke Taekwondo Club will not allow this impression/message being given to both bullies and their victims.

• Taking all signs of bullying very seriously

• Encouraging all students to speak and share their concerns

• Create an open environment

• Investigate all allegations

• Include discussions in the classes about bullying

In all cases, support to the Instructor of the student concerned will be provided.

Sanctions

By a class Instructor

• An apology from the bully

And/or

• Discussions in the club on the issue of bullying

Under the disciplinary code of Overton and Basingstoke Taekwondo Club.

• A probationary period to include a planned programme of encouragement/support to the bully to change their behaviour

And/or

• Suspension from the club for a fixed period or a permanent basis

Should there be a case of bullying involving an Instructor, following a review by the Child Protection Officer, the case will be subject to the Disciplinary Policy of Taekwondo Chungdokwan GB.
