Some basic info about The Field Museum’s 2016 Dozin’ with the Dinos overnights

What is the Dozin’ with the Dinos overnight program like? Bring your sleeping bag and explore one of the most exciting spots in town! Dozin’ with the Dinos is a unique opportunity for children ages 6-12 to spend the night at The Field Museum. Spend your evening enjoying workshop activities like dissecting owl pellets and live insects from your own backyard. Enjoy a snack break to fuel yourself for a self-guided tour of Inside Ancient Egypt – in the dark! (Make sure to bring your flashlight!) Before you know it you’re listening to bedtime stories outside the Maori Meeting House and crawling into your sleeping bag in one of our wondrous exhibitions.

When are Dozin’ with the Dinos overnights offered? Overnights begin Fridays at 5:45pm and end Saturdays at 9am. We are offering one Saturday program this year. January 15 February 5 February 19 April 1* May 6 January 29 February 12 March 18 April 9^ May 13 *Girl Scouts of GCNWI have reserved a bulk number of tickets for this date. Scouts can register via the Council. ^This is our only Saturday overnight

Who are Dozin’ with the Dinos overnights designed for? Dozin’ with the Dinos overnights are for children ages 6 to 12 and their chaperones. Individual families and groups can register for this event. Scouts, schools, churches, community groups and others are welcome at the overnight. Groups can range in size, but must always maintain a minimum 1:3 ratio of chaperones to children. Minimum group size is 15. Chaperones must be at least 21 years old. Children must be between the ages of 6 to 12. We have the right to refuse entry if age requirements are not met. If you have a child 13 years or older, check out our programs designed especially for teens: http://www.fieldmuseum.org/at-the-field/programs/teens

How much does a Dozin’ with the Dinos overnight cost? Group Rate: $60 per person. A group consists of 15 or more people. Groups with fewer than

15 members must register as individuals. Standard Overnight Rate: $65 per person ($60 for Field Museum members). Premium Package: tickets are available for individual families. Due to limited space, Premium

Package tickets are not available to groups and are filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Premium Package tickets ($78, 68 for members) allow guests to sleep in the Dinosaur Hall of Evolving Planet.

Premium Packet With Tour: tickets ($90, 80 for members) allow guests to sleep in the Dinosaur Hall and go on a behind-the-scenes tour with a Field Museum scientist.

Premium Package tours take place from 7:00pm to 7:45pm in place of the first portion of the Workshop time. Please note that the length and content of the tour make it a great option for children ages 9 through 12 who are interested in learning more about science at The Field Museum, but a tour may not be the best fit for younger children. Tours vary based on scientists’ availability – you’ll always see something cool, but it may be fossils, bird specimens, fish collections or another behind-the-scenes location at The Field

Museum.

When should I register for Dozin’ with the Dinos? Dates for the next year’s season are announced in July. If you know your schedule in advance, we recommend registering as soon as possible. For more information on Metra, CTA and Pace connections, schedules, and fares, call the RTA hotline at 312-836-7000 or visit www.rtachicago.com or www.transitchicago.com. DRIVING DIRECTIONS: The easiest route to the Museum Campus is via the 18th street and Lake Shore Drive entrance, immediately south of Soldier Field. Exit Lake Shore Drive onto eastbound 18th Street and follow 18th Street/Museum Campus Drive east of the stadium and north to the Museum Campus.

PARKING: Parking for participants is included in the price of the overnight ticket. Parking is reserved in the North Garage – which is accessible via 18th Street. Overnight guests may access the North Garage starting at 5:00pm. On most days, participants can take a parking ticket from the machine and receive a validation ticket from overnight check-in staff. Occasionally the garage is on a cash-only pay-as-you-enter mode which means overnight guests will not get a parking ticket but will simply tell the garage staff person they are attending the overnight to get into the lot free of charge. No validation ticket will be needed to exit the garage on these days. All cars parking the garage must exit by 9am Saturday morning to avoid being towed. Please make sure to get a validation ticket from overnight staff during the event. Do not park in the East Lot – only the North Garage is reserved for overnight guests. THE MUSEUM WILL NOT REIMBURSE GUESTS WHO PRE-PAY FOR THEIR PARKING OR PAY FOR PARKING WITHOUT A VALIDATION TICKET.

What time should I arrive on Friday night? Check-in starts at 5:45pm. Please plan to arrive between 5:45pm and 6:15pm. This gives you time to get checked in, put down your gear, and make it to orientation. Orientation begins at 6:30pm. Orientation is mandatory – how else are you going to find out about all the cool things planned for the night?! If you come before check-in there is no place to store your luggage. What should I do if my Group Leader has not yet arrived? If your Group Leader cannot make it to check-in at 5:45pm, they should have a secondary leader check-in for the group. What if I arrive late? We understand traffic getting into Chicago on a Friday night can be rotten. Please make every effort to arrive on time, but if you arrive late you can enter through the South Doors until 8pm. If you arrive after 8pm

Dozin’ with the Dinos: Web: fieldmuseum.org/overnights Email: [email protected] Phone:312.665.7525

Fax:312.665.7401 “ATTN Overnights” Mail: The Field Museum: Overnights 1400 S Lake Shore Dr, Chicago, IL 60605

you must walk around the building to the West Doors – the side of The Field Museum closest to Lake Shore Drive. (Note that arriving after 8pm is strongly discouraged.) No one will be admitted to The Museum after 9pm.

PARKING QUESTIONS Where will I park? Overnight guests can park in the Soldier Field North Garage. There is no additional charge for parking. The parking lot will open to participants at 5pm. Do NOT park in the East Lot—only the North Garage is reserved for overnight guests. Do I have to pay for parking? No - we’ve got your parking covered! You will need to get a parking validation ticket at the Museum in order to get out of the garage without paying the fee, which varies from $19- $41. (Note that if you pay for parking at the North Garage or East Lot, The Field Museum will not be able to reimburse that cost.) When you enter the North Garage you will receive a green parking ticket. Keep this ticket! When you check-in at The Museum (or during snack or at breakfast or any other time you see a Dozin’ with the Dinos staff person) you will get a yellow parking ticket. The yellow ticket is your parking validation. When you are driving out of the garage you will put the green ticket in first and then the yellow ticket in as payment.(On some occasions, the parking lot will go into a cash-only pay-as-you-enter mode. On these days, overnight guests can tell the garage staff person they are attending the overnight to get into the lot free of charge. No validation ticket will be needed to exit the garage the next morning on these days.) When do I have to move my car? Guests of the overnight should plan to move their cars out of the North Garage by 9am on Saturday morning. If you are staying on the Museum Campus you can pull back into the North Garage and pay the daily rate or drive closer to the Adler Planetarium to find a metered parking spot. Where should I park if I need a handicap accessible parking space/entrance? Please coordinate with the Dozin’ with the Dinos staff 1 week in advance of the overnight in order to secure a handicap accessible parking space and admittance through an accessible door. Email [email protected] with any special parking requests.

FOOD QUESTIONS Will dinner be provided? No – The Museum provides a snack Friday night and breakfast on Saturday morning. PLEASE eat dinner before arriving to The Museum for check-in. Vending machines are also available for use at your own risk. Museum restaurants are NOT open during this program. Can I have food delivered to The Field Museum or bring my own? No – outside food is not allowed at the Dozin’ with the Dinos and you cannot order pizza, etc. to have while at The Museum. Please make arrangements to have your group eat before arriving at The Museum. In order to help care for the Museum’s collections, no outside food is allowed including soda, gum and candy. All right - what food will be provided? A late night snack will be provided at 8:30pm on the evening of the overnight, and a continental breakfast will be provided at 7:30am the following morning. Sample Snack Menu: soy butter and jelly OR turkey and cheese half sandwich, apple, juice box, coffee, water

Dozin’ with the Dinos: Web: fieldmuseum.org/overnights Email: [email protected] Phone:312.665.7525

Fax:312.665.7401 “ATTN Overnights” Mail: The Field Museum: Overnights 1400 S Lake Shore Dr, Chicago, IL 60605

Sample Breakfast Menu: bagel and cream cheese OR muffin, a variety of cereals, milk, orange juice, coffee Can I eat food in the exhibit halls? No, food is not allowed in the exhibits. In order to ensure the artifacts and specimens on display are preserved for years to come, we only allow guests to eat in the designated areas on the ground level of the Museum. Food found in the exhibit halls/sleeping areas will be confiscated. What if I have an allergy or other dietary restrictions? You will be allowed to bring your own food only under the following conditions:

o It must be sealed in a heavy-duty plastic container (Tupperware, not a Ziploc bag), labeled with the guests name;

o It must be given to an overnight staff member at check-in to be placed in the kitchen prep area of the The Siragusa Center (the designated eating area) and left there for the duration of the event (staff will get it for you during snack/breakfast);

o Items must be non-perishable, as overnight staff will not have access to refrigeration for guests’ food. Food items will be given to a Dozin’ staff member upon check in

Any food not meeting these criteria or that is found in an exhibition hall will be immediately confiscated.

SPECIAL NEEDS Who should I contact if I have a special need? If you have special needs and are part of a group or have registered as a family, please call the overnight coordinator at 312.665.7525 at the time of registration to speak with a Field Museum representative about your requests for the evening. If you require sleeping areas with 24hr power (such as for a CPAP machine), nearby access to restrooms and elevators, parking in our disabled access lot, or have other requests, please contact overnight staff ASAP to ensure we can accommodate your needs. The South Door does NOT have a ramp and has many stairs; however, we do have a fully-accessible entrance available but you must arrange this with staff in advance. Do not wait to contact staff as often arrangements need to be made within various Museum departments and delaying requests may mean not being able to accommodate your needs.

SLEEP ARRANGEMENT QUESTIONS Where will I be sleeping if I’m here with a group? Each group will have a specific area designated as their sleep space. Sleeping maps will be handed out during check-in. The space you are assigned depends on the size of your group. All groups will be sleeping on the Main Level in the exhibit halls. Note that all the sleeping areas are carpeted. Where will I be sleeping if I’m here as a General Overnight family (not part of a group)? There will be a space reserved in an exhibition on the Main Level. All General overnight families will sleep in this exhibit. The space assigned for families varies depending on the number of families attending the overnight.

Dozin’ with the Dinos: Web: fieldmuseum.org/overnights Email: [email protected] Phone:312.665.7525

Fax:312.665.7401 “ATTN Overnights” Mail: The Field Museum: Overnights 1400 S Lake Shore Dr, Chicago, IL 60605

Where will I be sleeping if I have Premium Package tickets? Premium Package guests sleep in the Evolving Planet exhibit on the Upper Level. The Genius Hall of Dinosaurs (the big room with all the dinos!) is the space reserved for Premium Package guests; however, if you find a spot you like elsewhere in the Evolving Planet exhibit, you are welcome to sleep there. When can I set up my stuff? Upon arrival guests are encouraged to leave their belongings in their sleeping area as a means of staking out their own spot. Please do not spread out your gear until after snack, so all guests can enjoy the exhibits. For safety reasons, please be mindful to leave a clear walkway through exhibits when spreading out your gear later in the evening. Outlets are available throughout the museum to inflate your air mattress but some of them will lose power when we shut the lights out – so don’t leave this job ‘til 10:30 pm. Note that tents are strictly prohibited. Twin sized air mattresses is the largest mattress size allowed at Dozin’ with the Dinos. Will all-girls groups be sleeping in the same area as all-boys groups? Sleep arrangements are based firstly on the size of the group and then on the gender of the group. Every effort is made to put groups of the same gender in the same area. Sleep spaces in the exhibit halls are clearly marked and, surprisingly for a big museum, most halls feel like your own little space. Will I be warm or cold while I’m sleeping? Both. We do our best to keep the temperatures moderate and comfortable during an overnight, but this is a big building and temperature can vary from hall to hall. To be safe, we suggest bringing layers of clothes - as in a t-shirt and a sweatshirt. Will I have access to 24 hour electricity in my sleeping area? Maybe. If you need a plug to inflate your air mattress, we recommend doing so before lights-out. If you need help finding an outlet, feel free to ask Dozin’ with the Dinos staff to direct you to a nearby outlet. In some exhibitions, the power to the outlets will turn off when the lights are turned off. If you need 24 hour access to electricity (for example, if you use a CPAP), please contact [email protected] at least one week prior to the overnight event to make sure you are directed to a sleeping location that will have working outlets.

DEPARTURE QUESTIONS When do I have to pack up my gear? All your gear (sleeping bags, etc.) need to be out of the exhibit halls and with you by 8:30 am on Saturday morning. What if I have to leave early? The South Door of The Museum opens at 8:30am on Saturday. If you are leaving before 8:30am please exit via the East Entrance on the Ground Level. If you are leaving before 6am, please contact a member of the Dozin’ with the Dinos staff or a Protection Services Officer. What should I do on Saturday? You are welcome to stay and continue exploring the Museum--your general admission on Saturday has been covered. If you would like to stay part of the morning – or the whole day! – please feel free to do so. Make sure you get your hand stamped by a Dozin’ with the Dinos staff person in order to be let back into The Museum after loading up your gear into your car (or putting it in coat check if you took public transportation). Guests of the overnight should plan to move their cars out of the North Garage by 9am on Saturday morning. If you are staying on the Museum Campus you can pull back into the North Garage and pay the daily rate or drive closer to the Adler Planetarium to find a metered parking spot.

SOUVENIER QUESTIONS Where can I buy Dozin’ with the Dinos merchandise? Between 9:30pm and 10:30pm you can purchase overnight merchandise by SUE the T.rex (in the main hall of the museum). Note that this is the only time Dozin’ with the Dinos merchandise will be available for sale- it is not sold in the museum stores. Merchandise includes our Dozin’ with the Dinos T-shirts, patches, 3-in-1 magnets, baseball caps, and pillowcases. T-shirts are available in sizes from Child XS through Adult 2XL. Can I pre-order Dozin’ with the Dinos merchandise? Yes. You may fill out the Merchandise Pre-Order Form and send it via email to [email protected] or mail a hard copy to the Museum (don’t forget to address it to Attn: Overnights!). Merchandise Pre-Order Forms must be received the Wednesday before the overnight event or they will not be processed. Only credit card orders will be processed- no checks will be accepted for merchandise orders. Please note all orders- regardless of when they are received- will be processed one week before the event. Many of the overnights are booked to capacity, so pre-ordering is advised. If you have an Illinois Tax-Exempt letter, be sure to include it in the pre-order. To avoid delays at the overnight event, it is recommended that groups with tax-exempt status place pre-orders for merchandise purchases. Where can I pick up Dozin’ with the Dinos merchandise that I pre-ordered? Pre-orders can be picked up by SUE the T-rex between 9:30pm and 10:30pm. You can skip the line and head right to the merchandise tables to pick up your pre-order. NOTE: If there are multiple orders for the same group, the Group Leader can pick up all the items to distribute OR each order can be picked up individually. Please make arrangements with your group beforehand if you are going to pick up multiple orders. How can I pay for Dozin’ with the Dinos merchandise? Credit card payments are preferred for merchandise sales the night of the event. Checks are not accepted. Will other stores be open? The Main Museum Store (near the South Door on the Main Level) will be open starting at 7:30am on Saturday (or Sunday April 19th) morning. Remember, Dozin’ with the Dinos merchandise is not available in the museum store. Do you have Mold-a-Ramas? Penny Presses? Photo booths? Yes! Remember to bring quarters or small bills and a shiny penny if you would like to make one of these souvenirs on the Ground Level. Overnight staff does not have the ability to refund your money if one of the machines malfunctions, so please use at your own risk! Do you have an ATM? There is an ATM at the south entrance of the Museum. Guests will not be able to access the ATM after 8 pm, which is when the south doors are locked.

SAFETY QUESTIONS What are the rules?

Have fun!

Remember you are in a public area.

Eat only in designated areas; do not bring food or drinks into the exhibitions.

Use walking feet (No running).

Children and their chaperones must stay together at all times.

Respect your fellow overnighters and their belongings while touring Museum exhibitions. Will there be security present at the overnight? Yes. The Field Museum Protection Services department has staff members inside the building 24 hours a day. A Dozin’ with the Dinos staff person or a Protections Services Officer can almost always be found in Stanley Field Hall (the main hall of the Museum). Guests are encouraged to leave their belongings in their sleeping area during the overnight program as a means of staking out their own spot. While we don’t have an issue with theft at the overnight program, we do highly recommend keeping valuables on your person at all times. The Field Museum does not take responsibility for any lost or stolen items. Will there be an EMT present at the overnight? Yes! We will have an EMT on site in the first aide room. If you or someone in your group needs assistance, please tell a Dozin’ with the Dinos staff person or Field Museum Protection Services Officer so he/she can escort you to the first aide room. What behaviors will be cause for removal from The Museum? The Dozin’ with the Dinos staff and Field Museum Protection Services staff reserve the right to remove guests from The Museum during a Dozin’ with the Dinos program. Behavior that would merit removal from The Museum includes, but is not limited to, belligerence to a staff person or other guest, fighting, possession or consumption of alcohol or illegal substances. Refunds will not be issued.

TICKETING QUESTIONS What’s different about Premium Package tickets?

Premium Package tickets are limited in quantity.

Only families can purchase Premium Package tickets. Space in Evolving Planet is limited and we are unable to accommodate groups’ request to purchase Premium Package tickets. Groups may only purchase Standard Overnight tickets.

Premium Package guests sleep upstairs in the Evolving Planet exhibit (with the dinosaurs)!

Premium Package With Tour guests spend the first 45 minutes of the workshop time on a behind-the-scenes tour with a Field Museum scientist. (Tours will vary depending on availability and scheduling of scientific staff.)

Guest must purchase Premium Package tickets in advance – upgrades the night of the event are not allowed.

Can I bring children aged younger than 6 or older than 12? No. We receive many requests from people to bring children to the overnights that are outside our designated age range of 6-12 years old. For many reasons, we are unable to approve these requests. In the interest of fairness, we can’t make an exception for some participants while refusing it for others. Additionally, the activities offered are designed for children between the ages of 6 to 12 and children who are younger or older would not find them appropriate for their skills and/or interests. Children younger than 6 years are not allowed particularly because of the program timeline: programming runs until 11:30pm with a bedtime of 12:30am. Also, because of the popularity of the program and the fact that it consistently sells out, giving tickets to participants outside the age range takes those tickets away from our intended audience. Can I buy an extra ticket at the door? No. All tickets must be purchased in advance of the event.

I’m trying to register online and I’m receiving an error message. What’s going on? If you are receiving an error message, that means that the program is sold out for that date. Please try to register for a different overnight date. We try to update the program availability on our website as soon as possible, but it’s possible that something may sell out via our registration system but not yet say “sold out” on our website. I haven’t received my tickets. What’s going on? We do not issue paper or electronic tickets for our Dozin’ events. When you arrive for your event, we will have your name on our list. We recommend that you bring a copy of your confirmation email, if possible. How do I buy tickets for the 3D movie? Tickets for Waking the T.rex: The Story of SUE are only sold in-person on the night of the event. You cannot buy tickets in advance. You are welcome to purchase tickets as soon as you arrive to ensure your preferred showtime. The movie runs approximately 25 minutes. Tickets are $5 per person. What should we do if we want to increase the size of our group? If your group size is going to increase dramatically – by 10 people or more – contact The Museum ASAP in order to ensure additional spaces are reserved for your group. The group size can change until final payment is due 5 weeks before the program date or until the event sells out (whichever comes first). After the final payment due date, groups increasing their size will be required to contact the Museum at [email protected] to request additional spots. The Museum will make every effort to accommodate those requests up to 1 week before the program date if there is room. The Museum cannot accommodate requests made the week of the overnight or the night of the event. Please note: checks will not be accepted for increases in group size. All tickets will be charged to the credit card on file. What happens if group members are unable to attend and the group size shrinks? The group size can change until final payment is due 5 weeks before the program date. Groups reducing their size after the final payment due date may choose to find replacement attendees for those group members unable to attend. However, no refunds will be made at this point. Can I get an exchange if I cannot attend the event? Exchanges are allowed for General Overnight and Premium Package participants PROVIDED THE MUSEUM IS CONTACTED IN ADVANCE OF THE OVERNIGHT. Guests giving advance notification can exchange their tickets for a future overnight program within the same overnight season. An alternate date must be provided by the participant when the exchange is requested. All exchanges will be charged a $10 per participant processing fee regardless of when the museum was notified. Based on availability, if an entire group wishes to exchange their date, the museum must be notified at least five weeks prior to the event. A fee of $10 per person will be incurred. No exchanges will be made less than five weeks prior to the event date. No refunds. Exchanges will not be made after the event has passed. No exceptions. Contact Dozin’ with the Dinos Coordinator at 312.665.7525 or email [email protected] ASAP to request an exchange. Note: tickets not used during the 2016 season are not valid the following year. Can I get a refund if I do not attend the event? No. The Field Museum is not responsible for personal matters that may bar participants from attending the overnight event. No refunds will be issued.
