• To explore sustainable development, linking this to the people being affected by environmental problems.
• Objectives:• By the end of the session you will hopefully…………
• Understand and be able to define the term, sustainable development.
• Be able to link sustainable development to the issues that were discussed at Rio 2012, i.e. jobs, energy, cities, food, water, oceans and disasters.
• Be aware of the significance of waste, where the environment is concerned.
• Be aware of the importance of recycling, and especially re-using.
• Be able to describe the relationship between social justice and sustainable development.

Rio+20: the future we want
In the next few slides, we will………………• Explore some of the themes of Rio+20: the United Nations
Conference on Sustainable Development (which was held in June 2012).
• Explore sustainable development and what it means.
• Investigate the issues discussed at Rio - jobs, energy, cities, food, water, oceans and disasters – from the perspective of people living in less economically developed countries (LEDCs).
