Dear Friends,

Autumn has begun and like the multi-colored changing of the leaves, we usher in a play with just as varied emotions. Who better to carry on the tradition of bringing comedy and drama during this time of season than Olney Theatre Cen-ter veteran, John Going? Mr. Going returns to the theater leading a talented ensemble in the heartwarming dramedy, Over the Tavern, about one family’s journey towards toler-ance, acceptance and love. For many years, Mr. Going has delighted our audiences with wonderfully directed comedies and drama such as Witness for the Prosecution, Misalliance, The Savannah Disputation, and Night Must Fall.

Over the Tavern wouldn’t be possible without the gracious support of our 2012 Season Spon-sor, Mr. Robert Dohmen. We’d also like to thank James Pape and Nancy Newman-Pape for providing the funding to support the return of an Olney favorite, actor Paul Morella. We would like to most especially thank you, of course, our audience for your continuous patron-age!

This is an exciting time for the Theatre. We are not only celebrating our 75th Anniversary in 2013, but also reflecting back on the history of what Olney Theatre Center means to so many generations. Season 2013 has already started to turn some heads — it is sure to bring a mixture of shows for all tastes as we bring the past and the future togeth-er with productions like the Tony Award-winning musical Spring Awakening, the hilarious British comedy Neville’s Island, the dramatic & controversial 2012 multiaward-winning The Submission, the classic thriller Angel Street, the magical romantic musical Carnival, Bedlam Theatre’s extraordinary productions of Shaw’s Saint Joan and Shakespeare’s Hamlet, the comedy masterpiece Tartuffe with a modern twist, and the enchanting and funny family musical Once Upon a Mattress. If you haven’t already, be sure to take advantage of the great discounted show package offers and subscribe to our 2013 Season as soon as possible. It’s a season you will not want to miss!

Meanwhile, for Winter 2013, Olney Theatre Center brings to the stage one of Rodgers’ and Hammerstein’s classic family musicals, Cinderella, directed by Bobby Smith (our wonder-fully evil Dentist in Little Shop of Horrors) with musical direction by Olney veteran Chris-topher Youstra. Also, returning by popular demand Paul Morella brings back his sparkling solo production of Charles Dicken’s A Christmas Carol. There’s something for everyone this holiday season at your Olney Theatre Center.

Many thanks and enjoy the show!

Who’s Who in the Cast

Page 12: OVER THE TAVERN Program

Eisenhower was president, the superpowers were neck and neck in the Space Race, Ed Sullivan owned Sunday night and the Pazinski family of buffalo, New York was totally unaware of the events that would change them forever. Called “one of the biggest grass roots successes in American regional theatres” by Chicago critic Chris Jones, Over the Tavern is a funny and heartwarming play that deals with a family growing up over their family tavern in 1959 working class America. Four children find themselves caught between the claustrophobic authoritarianism of the Roman Catholic Church and an emotionally abusive father. Their mother, with her good sense, sanity, and wry humor, keeps this family afloat. At the center of the family is 12-year-old Rudy, a rebel and Ed Sullivan impersonator. Rudy takes on his formidable teacher, Sister Clarissa, questioning everything and claiming that God put us on earth to have fun. Weeks away from his confirmation, Rudy proclaims, “I read where there are over thirteen hundred religions in the world. I’d like to shop around!”

Autobiographical elements abound in Over the Tavern. like Rudy Pazinksi, tom Dudzick was born in buffalo to Polish-Catholic parents. he and his siblings (one of whom was mentally challenged) grew up over a tavern. His father was a basketball player (in the play Chet is a former baseball player). unlike Rudy, he never talked back to the nuns at the Catholic school he attended. Dudzick was in his twenties before he began questioning the rules and dogma of the Catholic religion.

Over the tavern is the first play of a family trilogy. Premiering in 1994 at the Studio Arena Theatre in Buffalo, the play became a smash hit, running for three years. It has been produced all over the country at major regional theatres in Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Oregon, and California.

In an interview with Buffalo Beat magazine, Tom Dudzick emphasized his general theme of religious tolerance—someone should not be forced to believe in something he or she does not feel. Over the Tavern presents this theme beautifully. uncertainty and questioning can lead to hopeful endings. The play does not hit the audience in the face with a message. Instead, like the church itself (but not the nuns), it tries to teach gently. Love your family. Talk to each other. Forgive and forget the sins of the past. Above all, be true to yourself.
