WITTON LE WEAR STATION AND WEARDALE RAILWAYWintertimeisneverthebesttimetoshowoffourgardensbuttheareaatthestationislookinggood.Severalvolunteers have continued to maintain the station area and keep it tidy. In early January, Witton le Wear Parish Council arranged for the next stage of the project and the section nearest the level crossing has been cleared including the removal of a huge lump of concrete with an iron post. Nik Lamont of Hamsterley has done an excellent job. The area will be dug over around the tree stumps and sprayed to reduce the weeds. The Parish Council have agreed to purchase plants for this area and the work will be undertaken over coming months.

Weardale Railway Trust was delighted with the uptake on the heritage line to Witton le Wear during 2017. Their plans are to complete surfacing the full area of the platform at Witton Station prior to the 2018 season which starts on Sunday 25th March. This will allow a two carriage train to stop at the village. Further information about the Heritage trains can be found on Weardale Railway website: www.weardale-railway.org.uk

NEWS FROM THE PEWS - St Phillip & St James Parish Church

Page 4 Edition 82 - Winter 2018

A very Happy New Year to all our Readers and friends of the Parish Church. The Parish Church Council hope 2018 will be a year of peace across the world, where we all learn to share the amazing gifts given to us by Father God to use for good. Our good friends – Bon Achord - came in mid December to share their Christmas Concert and to allow us tomakethefirst100ClubDraw.Wewillpublishthenumbersratherthanthenamesofwinners.1St prize of £300 was number 99, 2nd prize of £180 was number 31 and the 3rd prize of £120 was number 76. We will be drawing the next set on numbers in mid March. There are still a few numbers vacant if you would like to join the scheme to raise money for the church fabric. Thanks to all who are supporting our church in this way.

Christmas already seems along time ago but many lovely, enjoyable events happened which made it a very special celebration again this year. The traditional Carol Service saw some new readers taking part and the mulled wine and mince pies went down well too.Carol Singing on the Thursday before Christmas saw 16+ singers visiting houses where new people over the past year moved into. We may have missed you and if so it was not deliberate, so please accept a belated welcome to our super village. We hope you will feel able to join in some of the activities that go on here. You’ll get a warm welcome.

The Church was beautifully decorated for Christmas, many thanks to those involved and to all the folk who took part in the services ensuring a real rejoicing together as we celebrate the birth of Jesus into our world all those years ago. As always the Crib Service on Christmas Eve starts Christmas for many families and this year wasnodifferentwith70+ofallagesjoiningintheancientstory.

We are very pleased that Norma and Janet are going to restart the Baptism Roll Birthday cards. Due to an oversight this has not been done for a few years. The intention is to send a birthday card from the church family – to whom the child has been joined by baptism - until their 12th birthday when they would be eligible forConfirmation ifdesired(or thecourseat8+).Thosewhobringchildren tobaptismhavemadesolemnpromises to Father God about their upbringing and this is a way of continuing the link of the child with the church, as well, of course, of wishing the child a Happy Birthday!

Path wise we have applied for a change of route across the Village Green to avoid joining it onto the drive up to Witton Hall which had thrown up some problems. We await a decision probably in February and possibly if refused will have to go back to plan A!

During Lent the 5 Parishes will gather at a Wednesday lunchtime (aslastyear)tostudyTheBlessingsCourse–Book2.StCuthbert’sat Etherley will host the lunches this year and having it at lunch time means not having to turn out on a cold evening. But if you are working and would still like a study session in an evening please let your Church Warden know so it can be discussed at their meeting in February.

The PCC will meet shortly to plan the social events for 2018 and new ideas are always welcome. With the heating working efficientlyitisaverypleasantvenuetomeetin.Anewsuggestionhas been a Poetry and Pimms Evening but I know some of you out there have some brilliant ideas as well.

PROPOSAL FOR A HERITAGE CENTRE IN WITTON LE WEARA meeting was held in November to explore the idea of developing a small Heritage Centre within the Parish Church. This would be a community led project but working very closely with the Church authorities. Ideas flowedandtherewereagreatdealofpositivevibesthatthiscouldbeagooddevelopmentwithinWittonleWear.

The Heritage Centre could have for example - displays, artifacts, recording of resident’s stories, potential working with the primary school and because of space limitation there could be themed exhibitions and maybe even visiting exhibitions in the future. Volunteers would be required to develop and manage the centre, but it may be possible to obtain external funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund and organisations such as Weardale Area Action Partnership. This could be a very exciting project, but at present is very open minded and we want to include anyone who may have some ideas or be willing to help develop this work. Initial thoughts are to haveanexhibitionduring2018focusingon‘EducationinWittonleWear’,awonderfultopicwhichcoversmany historical features but is also very relevant today.

Our next meeting will be on Thursday 11th January, 7pm in the Church. If interested in supporting this work please talk to Anne Yuill, Tim Atkins, Yvonne Marriott, Edith and Mike Whalley, or Freda Kirton or just come along. Everyone welcome and ideas even more welcome.

FRIENDSHIP LINK LUNCH The next Friendship Lunch will be held on Tuesday 27th February in the Community Centre 12 mid-day until 2pm. Lunch will again be a choice of homemade soups and there will be a variety of delicious deserts to tempt as well. It is suggested that there is a donation of £5 per guest to cover the costs and the rental of the facilities. The lunch is open to anyone who may wish some company during the day and can be any age. The Community Association is looking forward in 2018 to start on planning for a programme of refurbishment of the centre now we have completed the roof repairs and the building is water tight. We see the toilets as a priority if we are to use the centre for more social events. At present we have no disabled facilities and this will be corrected when we carry out the work.

Our Autumn Fair in November and the Music Night in December were very successful and well attended. Also our thanks go to Mark, the Head Teacher of Witton-le-Wear Primary School for the delightful carols sung bythepupilsattheswitchingonoftheChristmasLights.Tea,coffeeandmulledwineplusmincepiesetcprovided as usual by the ladies made this a very pleasant way to spend some time on a cold winter day.

The next event on the calendar is a St. Patrick’s Night in March. Publicity will be posted round the village because the next edition of the newsletter will be issued after the event.

At our meeting on the 24th January we will be planning for events throughout the year. It is important that we do this because now that we are fully responsible for the building we need a steady stream of income to maintain it. All the events that we organised last year were well supported as usual and for this we thank our residents. This has allowed us to make a modest surplus which is most welcome.

The Coffee Mornings continue to bepopular and well supported. What better way there is in the cold winter days to have ateaorcoffeeandcakeswithfriends, soifyou haven’t been already why not give it a try? The next lunch by the Witton-le-Wear Friendship Link Group will be on Tuesday 27th February in the Community Centre at 2.00pm. The previous one can only be described as excellent for both the food and the companionship.

As usual the regular events that take place are detailed in this newsletter so if you put on a few extra pounds over Christmas why not join one of the groups and lose them again and enjoy the company of your fellow villagers?

Jack Collins.

THE FLOWER CLASSThe Flower Class meets on the second Thursday of the month in the Methodist Schoolroom at 7.30pm.

We are a group who enjoy each others company, learning new skills and using adapting old familiar skills. We like to have fun and the atmosphere is very friendly.Whether you are new to flowerarranging or an old hand, we learn from each other and support each other. You might say Flowers, Friendship and Fellowship together.

The cost per class is £3. Why not stick your head round the door and see what happens in class before you opt in.

Article supplied by Kate Atkins

We wish you a very happy, healthy and peaceful New Year.

The Christmas Concert and Carols at the beginning ofDecemberwentoffverywell indeedandwasvery well attended. It was only the second public performance of the Witton Village Voices which everyone seemed to enjoy. The Northumbrian Pipers are always very popular and Leonard Brown the accordionist went down a treat, so a good night was enjoyed by all.

A very big thank you to all who supported the night and to those who entertained or supplied food or both. The night would not have happened without your kind support.

A Memorial Service is to be held at the Chapel on Sunday 4th of March, 2018 at 3 p.m. in Memory of Clare Collins and Pauline Peart who were both members of the Chapel.

If anyone else wishes to remember a loved one, please contact a Chapel member and let them know about them. Everyone is most welcome at this Service.

WOMENS INSTITUTE NEWS

PARISH COUNCIL EXPENDITURE:As you may already know, the Parish Council receives just over £5,500 per annum, known as our Precept. We areveryfortunatetohaveaqualifiedAccountantasourParishClerkandResponsibleFinanceOfficer, whoattempts to raise more funds for us than the small amount we pay him. We have always adopted a policy of not asking for more funds than we need to operate. The only problem with this approach is that we never have enoughsparefundstomakeameaningfuldifference.

Our Annual expenditure includes our Clerk’s small salary, membership fees to Local Authorities Association, Indemnity Insurance, clearing Village paths, supplying Village plants, donation to British Legion, small repairs and refurbishment, Community Association rental and small donations to Village Fayre etc. We also provide the Witton Word as economically as we can with the Editor keeping costs as low as possible due to advertising. In addition, Councillors do not claim any expenses and often provide free labour and donate materials. So we operate by the “Fishes and Loafs” system.

We have recently refurbed the Telephone Box, Village seats and cleared the Platform Area and purchased another Tub. We intend to supply more plants. By not refurbishing the Village Green rut, we have the “ear-marked”financefromthatproposedspend,plussome finance that we have managed to “squirrel”away over the last few years. The Parish Council have a “wish list” to dispose of this money. We wondered if anyone had any further suggestions to add to this list. Our list is to continue to refurbish the Platformarea, assist infinancingtheVillageFayre, contribute towards the pathway around the Parish Church, assist in re-establishing the Village Youth Club and our main aim for many years has been to install Village signs at the West End entrance and the East End around the Platform area. Finance and Planning issues have always been a barrier to this ambition, but now we are close to achieving it.

Please send your suggestions to the Parish Clerk or Chairman.

December 2017Our meeting began with a welcome to Anita Savory, who brought cards to sell on behalf of Weardale Community Hospital. She expressed her thanks to our members for their support of this cause every year.

Mrs Haworth reported on the success of the village Autumn Fair and our stall’s contribution to this event. She informed members of the new committee and their roles for the coming year.

The meeting continued with members being given instruction in how to make a simple stitched xmas decoration byMrsStonehouse.Therewasplentyofassistanceavailableformemberswhowerenotasconfidentwiththeirsewing and we were able to enjoy a good chat as we sewed.

We have several events to look forward to in the coming months. First is our Xmas dinner next week. Then there is the Carol Concert at Durham Cathedral on 16th December, which is always a wonderful afternoon. At the beginning of January we have our party night, on 10th Jan, with an enjoyable supper. We are also beginning to think of where to go for a spring outing. Quite a few members are interested in a theatre trip, so we will be looking into that. It looks as though we will be having another busy year.

January 2018We began our meeting in the traditional way with the singing of Jerusalem. As this was our party night business was kept to a minimum so that we could move on to the main part of the evening: a delicious supper of ham, potatoes&cauliflowercheese, followedbya rangeofdesertswhilecompletingacoupleof tablequizzesprovided by Mrs Cooper.

Some of our members will take part in the march through Bishop Auckland on 3rd February to celebrate the suffragettemovementandweareplanningatheatretrip.

Next month’s meeting will be a talk on handcrafted glass, followed in March by our birthday celebration.

Marilyn Gordon, Secretary.

Councillors agreed that this could cause major problems if it was implemented.116/17 Any other business - None117/17 Date and Time of the next Meeting - The next Ordinary meeting of the Parish Council is on Monday 8th January, 2018 in the Community Centre, Witton le Wear commencing at 6.15pm.

SEWERAGE PROBLEMS AROUND

It is worth reminding everyone of the “Love your Drain” poem, because our sewer pipes are aged and probably partially restricted. It goes like this:

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Minutes of ordinary meeting 9th of October 2017, Item 10 Witton Word Editors letter. I agree on an editor’s letter page but NOT ANONYMOUS.

Also, the comment about the church. Many people in the village do not take the parish magazine but like to know what is going on at the church, so the Witton Word is ideal. Is this not a village paper and does the church not belong to the village. Would the person that made the remark make their name known as, I am not afraid to put my name to anything I wish to speak about, and as a church member I do not hide behind the veil of the church.

May I Thank the editor for the good job he does for this Village publication. Mary H Hayton

TotheChairoftheParishCouncil(copytoJohnWheeler, editorofWittonWord). In the minutes of the Parish Council meeting of 9th October, we notice in item 10 a comment had been made concerning the amount of information submitted about the village church. As residents of the village, we feel that rather than criticising and discouraging information from any source, we should be encouraging all groups and individuals to let everyone know about events or other items of interest taking place in the village.

Also, in item 3 of the above meeting, it was stated that the proposed church path would cross a resident’s land. Thisstatementisincorrect, thelandinquestionbeing‘commonland’.Thepathwasoriginallytoendattheedge of the resident’s right of access across this land to their property. It is now being redirected so that it will not inconvenience them.

Yours, Edith and Mike Whalley - 17 The Paddock

As a member of the congregation of St Philip & St James church I was very disappointed to read in the recent copy of the Witton Word that a suggestion was made to limit the contribution from the church. Is this a unanimous decision of the Parish Council? The Parish Magazine was suggested as the media to be used for this information. The church magazine has a limited circulation while the Witton Word is delivered to every household in the Parish. The initiative of a friendship lunch was praised yet other social opportunities, linked to the church, could be limited to those residents receiving the church magazine. As a village do we want to welcome everyone to join in village events by drawing their attention to what is planned by as many means as possible?
