ETWORK N E W S WOMENSBUSINESSNETWORK.NET Ovarian Cancer: Knowledge is Power is a successful awareness program that has been presented at hundreds of venues to thousands of people across Canada. The program is designed to help effectively spread the word about ovarian cancer and its purpose is to raise awareness about the signs, symptoms, risks and preventative factors of ovarian cancer. Ovarian Cancer Canada strives to raise awareness and educate the general public and health care professionals about ovarian cancer. Currently there is no screening test for ovarian cancer and the symptoms are so vague that they are often overlooked or attributed to another cause. Sadly, 70% of women with ovarian cancer will not survive 5 years. However, when caught early the survival rate at 5 years can be up to 90%! Until a reliable early detection test is discovered awareness about the signs and symptoms is our best tool for improving survival rates. Happy New Year! I hope you all had a wonderful holiday season. I would also like to wish you all the best for 2012.

Our Gala and Auction was a great success again this year. Thank you to everyone who donated and to those

who opened their wallets to make this event a huge success. I would also like to thank our Social Directors Adrienne Richard and Lisa McConnell who planned this amazing event for us to enjoy.

The second half of our year will open with our annual Health Fair. Half year memberships are now available if you have business associates and friends who have been considering joining, now is the time. Our speaker line up is very exciting and our year-end social is included and is a member only event. I look forward to seeing all of you on January 11th at our first meeting of 2012.

from the editor

This month we are looking at the ‘Power of Goals’ as goal setting can be a powerful tool for both your business and your personal life. Often, when we think about what our goals are we think about things like getting healthier, obtaining greater success or spending more quality time with our loved ones. All wonderful things we would like to achieve. But... all of the afore mentioned items are concepts - ideas of what we would like our life to look like.

“If you don’t know where you are going, you will probably end up somewhere else.” ~Lawrence J. Peter

Goal setting can help us be clear on what we want and where we are going. Developing SMART goals is a wonderful way to break down each idea you have into clear, concise and actionable steps to achieving your goal - and what better time than right now to develop some SMART goals for ourselves.

Lets look closer at the SMART model:

s - speciFic. What is it you want? Why do you want to accomplish it? Who is involved in the process?

m - measurable. How will you know when the goal is reached? Identify the ‘by how much’ of your goal.

a - attainable. Here we look at whether your goal is realistic and attainable. Do you have the necessary resources and capacity? How will your

goal be accomplished?

r - relevant. Does your goal support your bigger vision and/or purpose?

t- time bounD. What is the time frame for the goals achievement? Be specific. Give it a date!

Have fun with the process. Pick 3 things you would like to achieve in 2012 and work the SMART process to kick start your year’s success!

The road leading to a goal does not separate you from the destination; it is essentially a part of it. - Charles DeLint“

We are kept from our goal not by obstacles but by a clear path to a lesser goal. - Robert Brault“

thank you From your social Directors!

A warm thank you to everyone who came together to make our Christmas Gala and Auction such a huge success!

We collected over $28,000 worth of auction items, and were thrilled by the generosity displayed by our membership and their guests at the auction itself. The final numbers are still coming in, but we are sure this year’s event put the “fun” back in “fundraiser”!

A special thanks to our team of volunteers from the YWCA, and to our cash room volunteers for their outstanding work. Also thanks to Whitney Paget, J’s Magic, Jocasta Boone of We Design and Rob Rusland for all of their help in making the night a success.

We would like to take this chance to thank you all again, and wish you each a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year!

cora whittington is a Leadership and Life Coach specializing in helping people clarifying intentions and identifying and eliminating

the barriers to achieving their

feature story

Clarifying Intentions vs. Setting GoalsWhat is the difference between clarifying an

intention and setting a goal? There is a subtle distinction between these two that makes a huge difference in the outcome and in the experience.

When we’re setting a goal, we think realistically. We analyze our current situation and plan out steps on how to reach our goal. Setting a goal is very cognitive process of analyzing, planning and reasoning. We are in control of the plan and of all the steps how to get there. But as you know sometimes life comes between you and your goals. Things happen and you can’t do what you had scheduled. It is hard to stay on track because there are so many distractions. Can you identify with this?

There is another way of getting to where you want to be. Clarifying an intention is a similar process like setting a goal, but the difference is to focus on the quality you’re after. And the intention has to be something you really want. It is not created

out of fear or something that we “should” do. It is inspiring and something that we really want. We can all overcome anything when we are inspired.

Check out this example:

goal: I lose 10 pounds by March 1 (I can hear you groan)

intention: I enjoy the clarity and inspiring ideas that come to me as I exercise. I also enjoy the improved relationships and increased joy that comes as a result of my healthy choices.

Clarifying an intention expands your energy and commitment because the outcome and process is exciting and inspiring for you. You will be much more likely to achieve what you want.
