The University of North Carolina Wilmington boasts of undergraduate learning opportunities second to none and professors whose commitment to knowledge is surpassed only by their dedication to students. It offers effective learning environments that integrate teaching and mentoring with research and service at a level that rivals exclusive research institutions of similar size. Students consistently praise the quality of their interactions with faculty and express a high degree of satisfaction with their overall educational experience. The faculty culture emphasizes teaching and mentoring, incorporating research as an important component of the undergraduate learning experience and an op-portunity to have an impact on the state’s most pressing issues. International ex-

periences are encouraged through study abroad programs and language and cul-ture studies on campus. Recognized in recent years by several na-tional publications as a top public undergraduate institution, UNCW continues its pursuit to soar to even greater heights. “The UNCW of today is a fantastic university,” said Chancellor Rosemary DePaolo. “The momentum that propels us to soar higher derives from our students’ achievements, faculty and staff accomplishments and strong support from alumni, friends, trustees, vol-unteer board members and other donors.” For 11 consecutive years UNCW has ranked in the top 10 of the best public regional universities in the South by U.S.News & World Report. For the fi fth consecutive year, UNCW received the “Best in the Southeast” designation by The Princeton Review. It is one of only four North Carolina public universities included in Peter-son’s Competitive Colleges

2008: Top Colleges for Top Students. Established as Wilmington College in 1947, the univer-

sity is made up of the College of Arts and Sciences, the Cameron School of Business, the School of Nursing, the Watson School of Education and the Graduate School. UNC Wilmington offers 73 bachelor’s degrees and 25 master’s degrees, a Ph.D. in marine biology and an Ed.D. in educational leadership and administration. Degree programs in the School of Nursing, Watson School of Education and Cameron School of Business are designed specifi cally to serve professional workforce needs in the region. The College of Arts and Sciences stresses applied learning experiences across the liberal arts disciplines to prepare its students to bridge the gap between the classroom and the com-

plex problems of 21st century communities. UNCW’s strength in the natural sciences, especially bio-logical sciences, chemistry, geological sciences and other dis-ciplines that form the core of its internation-ally respected niche in marine science, is the result of decades of intentional focus and investment. In the arts and literature, UNCW’s high profi le programs are fi lm studies and

creative writing. The Department of Film Studies takes advantage of the location of UNCW in Wilmington, N.C., the home of Screen Gems Studios, the largest full-service motion pic-ture facility in the United States east of California. The Master of Fine Arts in creative writing is one of the most respected on the East Coast, cited as one of “Five Top Innovative/Unique Programs in Creative Writing” in 2007 by Atlantic Monthly. The university has taken a leadership role in the long-term economic, environmen-tal, educational, social and cultural health of the region. It has a strong commitment to adult learners and offers short, non-credit university courses, seminars, lectures, travel excursions and other educational opportunities. Overall, the university has an annual $500 million economic impact on the eight-county region. This represents 10 percent of total economic activity in the seven-county region.

AdministrationRosemary DePaolo

Chancellor

Rosemary DePaolo became chancellor of the University of North Carolina Wilmington in July 2003. Under her visionary leadership, UNCW has attained national prominence as a model for teaching, research and service. A highlight of her administration is an unprecedented university-wide strategic planning process which refl ects the univer-sity’s commitment to providing its students with the most powerful learning experience possible. Under her leadership, UNCW continues to rise in academic quality. The average SAT of incoming freshmen improved from 1104 in fall 2003 to 1157 in fall 2007, the third highest in the UNC system, behind only UNC Chapel Hill and NC State. The 53-point increase is unprecedented among any of the UNC schools. Now in her fi fth year at UNCW, DePaolo continues to lead the university’s rise in national prominence. In the 2008 edition of America’s Best Colleges published by U.S.News & World Report, UNCW moved from seventh to the sixth place among the best public regional master’s university in the South. Among the 119 public and private universities in the South that provide a full range of undergraduate and master's level programs, UNCW improved its overall ranking from 20th in 2007 to 14th in the 2008 edition. Under DePaolo’s leadership, for the fi fth consecutive year, UNCW received the “Best in the Southeast” designation by The Princeton Review. UNCW is one of only four North Carolina public universities included in Peterson’s Competitive Col-leges 2008: Top Colleges for Top Students. This is the fi rst year UNCW has been featured in that publication. In November 2006, UNCW received the Christa McAuliffe Award for Excellence in Teacher Education from the American Association of State Colleges and Universities. This was the only university in North Carolina and one of only two in the country to be so honored. Throughout her time in offi ce, Chancellor DePaolo has been an advocate for using the intellectual capital of the uni-versity to address issues of concern to the region, particularly in furthering economic development. Under her guidance, UNCW achieved Millennial Campus designation of several sites to be used for public/private research ventures capitalizing on the university’s strengths in marine biotechnology among others. She is actively involved in several initiatives to improve the university’s local and regional outreach efforts, including serving as an ex-offi cio member of the Greater Wilmington Chamber of Commerce, on the Board of Directors of the Foundation of Renewal for Eastern North Carolina, as chair of the Southeastern Advisory Committee for Biotechnology of the NC Biotechnology Center, and on the Board of Directors and Executive Committee of the North Carolina Chamber, the state’s largest and most infl uential business group. She also serves on the Executive Board of the North Carolina Campus Compact. In 2007/2008 she chaired the local United Way Campaign with a goal of raising $2.3 million for Brunswick, Pender and New Hanover counties. A nationally recognized humanities scholar and leader in higher education, DePaolo has served on the Board of Directors and Executive Committee of the Association of Ameri-can Colleges and Universities, as well as the American Association of State Colleges and Universities. She also chairs the Colonial Athletic Association's Council of Presidents. Before arriving in Wilmington, DePaolo was president of Georgia College & State University, the state’s designated public liberal arts university. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Queens College of the City University of New York and a master of arts and a doctorate in 18th century English literature from Rutgers University. A native of Long Island, New York, DePaolo is married to Fred Wharton, a retired professor of English.

Van Houten File

Head Coach Kelly Van Houten Kelly Van Houten, who helped guide one of the nation’s most potent offensive attacks at Georgia State, was named UNCW head coach of the UNC Wilmington softball program on July 23, 2008.

Van Houten becomes just the third coach in the 24-year history of the program.

“I’m excited to have the opportunity to join the UNC Wilmington athletic department as its head softball coach,” Van Houten said. “The Seahawks have a great foundation in place and I am ready for the challenge of taking the pro-gram to the next level. I’m looking forward to many years of success here at UNCW.”

Van Houten made her way to the Port City after serving three years under legendary skipper Bob Heck at Georgia State, including associate head coach last season. As the program’s hitting coach, she guided the Panthers to national rankings in numerous offensive categories in 2008, includ-ing batting average (.323/6th), runs per game (5.8/14th) and slugging percentage (.475/17th).

Van Houten also played a key role in the development of back-to-back CAA Rookie-of-the-Year winners in Danielle Roddy and Catherine Lee as well as the circuit’s fi rst player to win both Player and Rookie-of-the-Year in the same sea-son (Lee).

The energetic Van Houten got her start in coaching at Belmont, where she worked as a graduate assistant while earning her master’s of education in sports administration. Following her time in Nashville, Van Houten joined another Atlantic Sun institution, spending two years as an assistant coach at Campbell, where she was responsible for oversee-ing the infi elders as well as assisting with the Camels hitting and base-running efforts.

A native of Raleigh, N.C., Van Houten was a collegiate standout at Furman, where she was a four-year letter winner at shortstop (1998-01) and still ranks among the Paladin’s career leaders in assists. She earned her bachelor’s of arts in political science and a Bachelor’s of science in health and exercise science from Furman in 2001.

An Interview with UNCW Head Coach Kelly Van HoutenOn What it Means to be a Head Coach: It is a great responsibility and privilege to be a head coach at any level. One has the opportunity to make an impact on young women who are learning life lessons and growing up right in front of you. To be a part of their lives at such a delicate time is an amazing experience and one I take very seriously. I welcome the challenge of leading them on the fi eld and mentoring them off the fi eld. I am honored they have chosen to pursue their college experience here at UNCW and have given me the chance to guide them through the challenges of being a student-athlete. I want our players to graduate as women of character and be a positive infl uence on those they come in contact with. My greatest joy is to see my players’ eyes “light up” when they are successful at whatever it is they are striving to achieve.

On Expectations of First Season: We are looking to hit the ground running from the fi rst game to fi nal game. Our goals are not only to get back to the CAA Tournament, but to also win there. We are striving for above .500 season with new statistical records along the way. We have a great group of players who believe this program can be back at the top again and they are willing to do whatever it takes to get it there.

On the Colonial Athletic Association: The CAA is a great conference, not only to participate athletically, but also academi-cally. The CAA is very competitive from teams one through eight which makes for an exciting spring season. It is great to compete against teams such as Hofstra who have a tradition of being successful for many years at the con-ference level as well as the next level. We are constantly being pushed by all the teams in the league to be at our best and that will prepare us for the next level of play.

On Recruiting: It is important to choose players who have a love for the game and want to win more than anything. We look for players who are successful in all aspects of their lives, on the fi eld and in the classroom. We want players who come from successful teams in high school and travel ball because that attitude of winning is contagious. It is that success and confi dence that will carry over to their teammates and through their college years.

On What it Takes to Build a Successful Program: As a coach, I have to believe in what I do and that must be seen by the play-ers. A program has to have the athletic ability to compete, but there must be heart and passion in everything we do in order to be successful. We have to do more than just show up for practice; we have to believe in what we are doing and strive to give our best at everything we do. One of my favorite quotes is: It takes hard work and perseverance and teamwork because no one gets there alone.

On the Importance of Education: Before players can compete on the fi eld, they must fi rst and foremost be successful in the classroom. A college education will carry the players through the rest of their lives long after their softball playing days are over. We want 100 percent graduation from our players, and we look to recruit those individuals who will get the job done in the classroom as much as they do on the fi eld.

On UNC Wilmington and What It Means To Be a Seahawk: What an awesome place to be! The tradition of UNCW athletics is strong, and I cannot imagine a better place to be as a fi rst-time head coach. Each day, I am surrounded by academic profes-sionals who love the school and who want the best for the students under their tutelage. I count it a privilege to be part of an athletic department that strives for the best, not only in its student-athletes, but also its coaches and staff. It truly is a family environment where everyone is supporting each other and looking to make each person a better individual. I am hon-ored to have the opportunity to be part of a great university and athletic department, and to call myself a Seahawk!

With more than two decades of success athletically and academically, the Colonial Athletic Associa-tion has established a reputation as one of the nation’s top collegiate conferences. The CAA encompasses fi ve of the nation’s nine largest metropolitan areas with a geographic foot-print that stretches from Boston to Atlanta. The conference has produced 16 national team champions in fi ve different sports, 33 individual national champions, 12 national players of the year, 11 national coaches of the year and 12 Honda Award winners. Even more impressive, however, are the honors accumulated away from competition, which include fi ve Rhodes Scholars and 20 NCAA post-graduate scholars. In 2007-08, the CAA had fi ve ESPN the Magazine Academic All-Americans and more than 1,700 of our 4,000 student-athletes received the Commissioner’s Academic Award after posting at least a 3.2 grade point average while lettering in a varsity sport. The landscape of the conference stretches along the majority of the East Coast and includes six of the nation’s top 25 media markets – New York (1), Philadelphia (4), Boston (7), Washington, D.C. (8), Atlanta (9) and Baltimore (24). The number of television homes in the CAA market exceeds 19.7 million. The CAA currently sponsors 22 sports with the addition of a 12-team football league in 2007. Male ath-letes compete for championships in baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, lacrosse, soccer, swimming and diving, tennis, track and fi eld and wrestling. Female athletes battle for conference titles in basketball, cross country, fi eld hockey, golf, lacrosse, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, track and fi eld and volleyball. In 2007-08, 26 teams earned NCAA Tournament berths and 46 student-athletes received All-America honors. Known nationally as a mid-major power in both men’s and women’s basketball, the conference also excels in many other sports. CAA squads have combined to win 10 fi eld hockey national titles since the championship began in 1981. Delaware and Towson have each reached the Final Four of the NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Championship. For the fi rst time, three women’s soccer teams reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament in 2007 and at least one men’s soccer team has advanced to the fi nal 16 of the NCAA Championship in fi ve of the last six years. Hofstra fi nished 15th overall at the NCAA Wrestling Championship and William & Mary placed 15th nationally in men’s cross country. In baseball, the CAA had 23 players chosen in the 2008 Major League draft, which was the second-highest total in league history. Hofstra won its NCAA-record 11th-straight conference title in softball and reached the NCAA regional fi nals. Individually, the W&M women’s tennis duo of Megan Moulton-Levy and Katarina Zoricic reached the quarterfi nals of the NCAA Doubles Championship in 2008 to earn All-America status for the second straight season, and Georgia State golfer Joel Sjoholm placed 13th overall at the NCAA Men’s Golf Championship. CAA member institutions are committed to excellence in the classroom. The Colonial Academic Alliance was created in 2002 by the league’s presidents with a goal of expanding their partnership to all aspects of university life outside of intercollegiate athletics. Among the programs already established are an undergraduate research conference, coordination of study abroad programs and granting visiting academic status to student-athletes traveling to an away contest so that they have access to libraries, academic resource centers and computer labs. In 2002, two faculty members from CAA institutions were awarded academia’s most coveted distinc-tion – the Nobel Prize. John B. Fenn, a research professor in the Department of Chemistry at Virginia Commonwealth University, received the Nobel Prize for chemistry, and Vernon Smith, a professor of economics and law at George Mason University, shared the Nobel Prize in economic sciences. Commissioner Thomas E. Yeager has guided the CAA since its inception. The conference traces its roots back to 1983 when three of its current members- George Mason University, James Madison University and the College of William and Mary - were aligned with East Carolina University, the United States Naval Academy and the University of Richmond as a basketball league (ECAC South). During the next two years, the league added 11 sports, acquired two new members (the University of North Carolina Wilmington and American University) and decided to form a new association. The transforma-tion from ECAC South to CAA took place on June 6, 1985. Charter members George Mason, James Madison, UNC Wilmington and William and Mary were joined by Old Dominion University in 1991 and by Virginia Commonwealth University in 1995. The con-ference added the University of Delaware, Drexel University, Hofstra University and Towson University in 2001. Georgia State University and Northeastern University became members of the conference on July 1, 2005. From all-star athletes to Nobel Prize winning faculty, the CAA takes great pride in producing perform-ers who stand out both on the playing fi eld and in the classroom.

The Athletic Academic Support Program provides a variety of services for all the university’s student-athletes. The program offers academic counseling and support to help student-athletes successfully balance the demands of their athletic and academic schedules. Progress reports monitoring class attendance and test results and accessing tutorial needs are completed two times each semester by professors of classes in which UNCW student-athletes are enrolled. The University College is designed to assist students during their academic careers, with special emphasis on the fi rst and second years of study when they are expected to work toward fulfi lling the basic studies requirements as outlined in the university catalog. The assistant athletic director for academics meets with student-athletes on a regular basis to assist in their academic success and monitor their progress toward a degree. Each freshman is assigned to an advisor for personal assistance in selecting courses, maintaining required scholastic records and planning a complete University College educational program. The program’s primary objective is to assist students toward completing basic studies. Several other programs are provided for academic support at UNCW, including the Writing/Reading Place, the Learning Center, the Math Lab, tutorial services, Disability Services, personal and career counsel-ing, study hall and a laptop program. The Writing/Reading Place offers one-on-one tutoring for any academic writing assignment. Tutors help students get started with a paper, offer aid in the development and organization of the project and provide strategies that help at each stage of the composing process. Computers for word processing are available in Randall Library. The Learning Center helps all students develop skills necessary to become successful, independent learners through tutorial assistance, supplemental instruction, study skills workshops and individual consulta-tions. Students desiring help with any level of math can fi nd it at the Math Lab. Staffed by faculty and students, the center in Bear Hall takes students on a walk-in basis. Any tutorial assistance from the Writing/Reading Place, the Learning Center and the Math Lab is free and available to all student-athletes.

CHAMPS/Life Skills Meets Student-Athlete Needs To prepare student-athletes for the challenges of life beyond the playing fi eld, UNCW and the NCAA team up in the popular CHAMPS/Life Skills Program. UNCW is currently one of 627 institutions involved in the popular program. The CHAMPS/Life Skills Program is designed to provide student-athletes with the education and the experi-ences to assist them in bridging the gap between college life and professional life in the work world and to make meaningful contributions to their communities. The CHAMPS/Life Skills Program focuses on fi ve commitment areas viewed as critical to personal growth: (1) Academic Excellence - to support the academic progress of the student-athlete toward intellectual development and graduation. (2) Athletic Excellence - to build philosophical foundations for the development of athletic programs that are broad-based, equitable and dedicated to the well-being of the student-athlete. (3) Personal Development - to support the development of a well-balanced lifestyle for the student-athlete, encouraging emotional well-being, personal growth and decision-making skills. (4) Career Development - to encourage each student-athlete to develop and pursue their career and life goals. (5) Service - to engage the student-athlete in service to his or her campus and surrounding communities. The NCAA has worked with its member institutions and educational consultants to create instructional materials and program models to address the needs of today’s student-athletes. Topics such as diversity education, developing sexual responsibility, nutrition, eating disorder prevention and awareness, time management, community service and career development are just some of the areas covered within the curriculum. A freshman seminar course is designed to assist student-athletes in making the transition to college, this seminar focuses on college-level study skills, time management, awareness of available university services, etc. It is open only to entering freshmen and generates two hours of elective credit toward graduation.

Wilmington: Gem of the Coast

Founded more than 250 years ago on the Cape Fear River, Wilmington has devel-oped into one of the fastest growing deep-water ports on the East Coast, combining eco-nomic potential with an abundance of outdoor recreational opportunities. Wilmington has a historic legacy that begins before the Revolutionary War and runs through its stance as the last Atlantic port open to blockade runners during the Civil War. Today, the continuous restoration and preservation in the historic district is a tribute to the city’s proud heritage. Historic Wilmington affords visitors the unique opportunity to enjoy a bustling seaport rich in shopping, dining, culture and the arts, while being only minutes away from barrier islands, broad beaches and the intracoastal waterway. The 200-block Historic District highlighting the downtown area opens into a scenic riverfront park that overlooks the USS North Carolina Battleship Memorial. A beautifully restored battleship, the USS North Carolina was considered the greatest sea weapon in the world when commissioned in 1941. During World War II, “The Show-boat” earned 15 battlestars and participated in every major naval offensive in the Pacifi c from Guadalcanal to Okinawa. A memorial since 1961, the battleship is dedicated to the men and women of all U.S. military services who defended our country during WWII. One of Wilmington’s most unique features is the city’s status as the leading entertainment production center in the Southeast. The city’s evolution into “Hollywood East” began when Dino DeLaurentis shot Stephen King’s Firestarter in 1984. One year later, Dino DeLaurentis constructed a studio facility in the Port City and the complex, now owned by EUE/Screen Gems, is the largest production studio east of Hollywood, offering nine sound stages on a 32-acre site near the Wilmington International Air-port. Numerous movies, television series and commericals have been fi lmed in Wilmington. The popular show, “Dawson’s Creek,” was produced in Wilmington and shot frequently on the UNCW campus as well as Warner Bros. hit, “One Tree Hill.” A fi lm-friendly community, Wilmington residents have embraced the industry, often appearing as “extras” in movies. It’s not un-common for celebrities the likes of Sandra Bullock, Nick Nolte, Julia Roberts, Tom Cruise and Dennis Hopper to be seen dining at a restaurant, shopping at the mall or just simply walking along the shore. Wrightsville Beach, just minutes away from Wilmington’s downtown area, is a year-round island resort. Wide, uncrowded beaches, full service marinas and a variety of accommodations are complemented by excellent seafood restaurants, specialty shops and exciting nightlife.
