Chevron’s Global Downstream Technology (GDT) & ETD

Of the four divisions within Global Downstream, GDT primarily supports Global Manufacturing.

External Technology Development, ETD, a division of the Technical Assessment Team within GDT, has a mission to identify, assess, develop and demonstrate technology from outside of Chevron in support of current and future business needs.

• They are our primary customer

• Our primary function is to support the refining sector of our business

• Find technologies outside of Chevron and work with third parties to bring applicable technology into the system

Probability of technical success?• Identify technical unknowns• Plan experimental program

to address largest uncertainty first

• Satisfactory IP position

Sufficient economicincentive?• Address a problem that is

worth solving

• Identify potential first user site(s)

Do we have a good partner?• Aligned Commercial

Interests• Adequate competency for

needed tasks• Experienced management

team

Successful Partnerships are built on high qualityTechnology, Business & Management elements

External Technology Development’s (ETD’s) mission is to rapidly identify, assess, develop and demonstrate technology from external sources

ETD Will…• Identify promising technologies at external companies (small, medium and large), and to a

lesser extent, government labs and universities• Assess the fit of the technology to the Downstream’s business challenges• Conduct due diligence on external parties’ technology (including IP) and management team• Help the external parties define their technology development efforts to meet our problem

specifications, when and if needed• Fund and provide oversight of pilot testing and prototype development by external parties• Facilitate the demonstration of technology in a Global Downstream Manufacturing facility• Negotiate and execute agreements with external parties including NDA’s, MTA’s, research

service agreements, license agreements, etc.• Focus efforts on technology that can be successfully demonstrated in 0-5 years.
