Dear Outreach Posters Client,

We’re really excited for the first time to be able to present to you the next 18 months worth of Outreach Poster ideas. We’ve never given you this much notice before! This document provides ideas through to the end of 2014. We hope they work well for you as you carry on mission in your local area. We’d hoped to get you this document in June, so some of the ideas you’ve already seen.

It’s our hope that your church or organisation will be able to use this extra time to plan effective mission campaigns / strategies that make use of these Outreach Poster ideas.

A few important items.

1. There are some copyright and distribution conditions that apply to this document. You can see these on the next page.

2. Remember, our target demographic is 18-35 year olds. Our goal is to reach a younger generation. Certainly, many posters will appeal to those outside this age bracket. But this is our target. Ironically, most church elders are well outside this bracket. So, if you’re church leadership team are nonplussed by our October poster, it may be beneficial for them to show it to some young ’uns.

3. The old saying goes, ‘If you aim at everything you’ll probably hit nothing!’ We believe firmly that it’s ok to target a particular group with a poster that’s not necessarily accessible to everyone.

4. We anticipate ‘pulling’ or replacing some of these ideas in order to respond to topical issues of the moment. You may remember a few months back we indicated that we’d do this. Such posters are ‘spur of the moment’ projects that can’t be planned for in advance. However, we’ll be less likely to pull a poster in favour of a topical one if a number of churches have already told us they’re planning to mission with that poster (eg use in guest events, leafleting etc). So please let us know of any special plans you have for the posters.

If we pull a poster it will more than likely appear again in the next round of poster ideas.

5. We value your feedback. Please let us know your thoughts on the ideas – both positive and negative. Projecting ideas so far into the future gives us opportunity to continue to refine ideas or cancel an idea that’s not been well received by a large number of churches.

6. Let us know by December 1st if you’d like an alternate poster for any of the 18 months worth of ideas.

We’re praying that these posters will be a blessing to your church and your community.

You don’t have to be on Twitter to follow Jesus.

July 2013

NotesThis simple poster does something very important. It reminds people that the expectation of the Bible is that we follow Jesus and it provides this information in a gentle non-confrontational way.

August 2013

Notes There were two good reasons to focus on ‘boat people’ at this time. 1. Firstly, they were at the centre of national debate in the run up to the Federal election. 2. Secondly, their plight is in our backyard. Hundreds are drowning off the coast of Australia but because they’re not Australian citizens concern is muted. If they were citizens then the uproar would be deafening. Instead the national indignation is that we’re being over run by ‘queue jumpers’. It is important to point out to our community that these people are real, precious human beings made in the image of God. People that God loves. The poster speaks to a number of key gospel touchstones. For example, generosity, compassion, mercy, justice, protection of the weak and so forth.

There was a tremendous media response to this poster with a page 2-3 spread in the Sydney Morning Herald (see here http://www.smh.com.au/federal-politics/fed-eral-election-2013/god-loves-boat-people-churches-take-a-stand-20130901-2syua.html) and numerous radio interviews with Andrew Bruce, the minister profiled.

NotesWhen we tested this poster on a range of people in different suburbs of Sydney we got an outstanding response. People were clear about what it meant and they thought it was a positive encouragement to find out more.

This poster picks up on the treasure metaphor that Jesus frequently uses in the gospels (see Matthew 6:19-21, 12:35, 13:44, 52, 19:21, Mark 10:21, Luke 6:45, 12:21, 33-34, 18:22).

Notes‘OMG’ is ‘Oh My God’ in internet parlance. If you haven’t come across the abbreviation then that may be because you’re a wee bit old – or not on Facebook. This poster gently chides people to consider what they’re saying and who their god is. It’s a conversation starter.

November 2013

This poster breaks new ground for us. It’s a church history poster that’s designed to appeal to an older demographic. It celebrates an Aboriginal Christian who ought to be known amongst Christians and Australians generally. William Cooper was a proud Bangerang man born near the banks of the Murray River in 1860 who, as an old man, went on to found the very first Aboriginal political lobby group, the Australian Aborigines’ League.

But this was no communist radical. William Cooper was a Bible-reading, hymn-singing, church-going Christian who believed the best thing that had happened for Australia’s first peoples was the Christian missions. He would argue passionately, often from the Bible, that Aboriginals ought to be treated as equal citizens in this country. Yet Cooper didn’t just speak up for Aboriginals.

On December 6, 1938, he led a march from Southampton Street Footscray to make protest for fair treatment at government offices at 415 Collins Street, Melbourne. But it wasn’t against the state government. Or even the Federal government. It was the German Government.

Cooper demanded a meeting with Doctor Drechsler, the General Consul of the Reichsconsulate – to speak

against the Nazi mistreatment of Jews that had begun on Kristallnacht (Crystal Night)a few weeks before. On this night of “broken glass” on 9–10 November, 1938, Adolf Hitler’s brown shirts (the Sturmabteilung) rampaged through the streets of Germany looting, burning and smashing Jewish stores, buildings and synagogues. Nearly 100 Jews were killed and approximately 30,000 were incarcerated in concentration camps. Yad Vashem in Jerusalem, the world’s leading Holocaust research centre, says that this protest was the only one of it’s kind in the world. It didn’t happen in London. It didn’t happen in New York. It happened in Melbourne. And it was led by a man who was not even a citizen in his own country. William Cooper was a man led to greatness by his Lord, Jesus Christ. Today, he’s increasingly acknowledged by Aboriginals, Jews, Christians, unionists and politicians as one of the truly great leaders in the story of Australia. The November poster is your opportunity to put your church behind him. And to show your community that Jesus uses people to bring good things to Australia. It will have a prominent URL that takes people to a special mini website containing the story of this outstanding Australian saint.

Outreach Media will work with William Cooper’s grandson, Uncle Alfred ‘Boydie’ Turner to engage the media with this important story on the 75th anniversary of Kristallnacht. We hope that the story is picked up by major media outlets.

Notes By all accounts, the original Saint Nicholas was a ‘Jesus man’ but the present incarnation foisted on us every Christmas is a product of the Coca Cola company and a graphic designer called Haddon Sundblom.

In 1931 Coke’s brief to this man was put Coke into Christmas and so Sundblom drew the big fat jolly man we know so well. The one who gives gifts to kids who are good! A message that flips entirely the Christian gospel that teaches about Jesus who came to save sinners.

This poster shows both kids and grownups that Jesus is the most important person at Christmas time. It shows us that, like all people, even Santa needs help from Jesus.

January 2014

NotesThis poster riffs off the great lamb ads you’ve almost certainly seen in January over the last few years. When the Meat And Livestock Association decided to hire Sam Kekovich to put lamb consumption into Australia Day they did a great job. The ads were irreverent and hilarious and instantly became part of the Australian January experience. This poster is a nod to those clever ads and a pointer to the best lamb feast of all. Jesus!

Mission extrasWe think this poster idea makes an excellent bumper sticker/T Shirt.

We’ll make these available based on expressions of interest from churches and individuals. So, please let us know if you’re interested in promoting this within your church.

February 2014

NotesJesus says in Luke 16:13 that you ‘cannot serve God and money’. Certainly money and all it represents is Australia’s chief idol. There are so many Australians that need to hear this message and take it to heart. So many people live for wealth and material pleasure alone. This image functions as a visual riddle, though we don’t think it’s too hard to get. The words of Jesus will be chiseled into the stone wall behind providing a metaphoric implication that this idea is timeless and certain.

NotesBecause ‘brokenness’ is the human condition it is the common experience of all. Those who deny it leave themselves hard and resistant to Jesus Christ, the great doctor of the soul, who says in Mark 2:17,

“Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I came not to call the righteous, but sinners.”

Our God is a loving kind God. A gentle, kind father who, “is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit” (Ps 34:18).

With this poster we’ve sought to provoke insight for the viewer into their broken condition. This poster will be a frozen moment, an image of the instant a person explodes. But instead of the person being filled with blood and viscera they’ll be made of fragile porcelain. The image is intended to provoke self-understanding for the viewer and help them see clearly what they need to do. The headline ‘Let Jesus put you back together’ is a ‘call to action’ for all people to put their hope in Jesus.©

April 2014 - Easter poster (Easter Sunday April 20)

NotesIn order to produce this poster we’ve asked a man who’s a set designer and sculptor to make a representation of the crucifixion narrative coming out of a Bible as though the pages are coming to life and taking shape in origami form. This poster will appear at Easter - a time when Jesus’s sacrifice at the cross is topical.

We hope the end result will form an interesting, engaging even arresting image that captures people’s interest as they pass by. The point of the origami scene is to show how rich and vibrant this Bible narrative is. The writer to the Hebrews describes God’s word as ‘living and active’ (4:12). We hope this image brings to life the most important story of all in a ‘liv-ing’, visual way. This poster repeats the headline from the June, 2013 poster depicting the Exodus with escaping Israelites made from letters of the Bible. Please pray that people will seek out the story in the Bible to read for themselves.

NotesWhen Jesus gave his provocative ‘I am’ statements his audience were not always sure how to understand him. In John 6 most of his disciples abandoned him when he declared,

“I am the living bread which came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever”

The most provocative statement of all came in John 8:58 where Jesus simply said, “before Abraham was, I AM.” Jesus was identifying himself with God who had revealed himself with this name to Moses in Exodus 3. This poster from John 8:12 is one of the more gentler of the ‘I am’ statements. The poster is intended to be simple, gentle and encouraging. Please pray that people will respond to the words of Jesus.

June 2014 (Actual poster timing Friday 6 June to July 14)

Notes The FIFA World Cup 2014 begins on Thursday, June 12 and ends on Sunday, July 13. We’ll let the poster run for this period.

Like the Olympics, the World Cup comes round every four years but the World Cup is bigger. Greg Baum wrote this for Fairfax in 2006:

“The World Cup dwarfs the Olympics. Television companies pay mere millions for rights to the Olympics, billions for the World Cup. A pitch-side hoarding at the World Cup costs $800,000 per match.”

Since we’ve been doing Outreach Posters we’ve done posters for both the Olympics and the world cup. There’s no shortage of angles to take and in the years to come we’ll have plenty of opportunity (God willing) to take those up.

This poster makes a simple pun on our Lord’s cup of the New Covenant. It won’t be under-stood by the non-churched but the clear statement on the poster, ‘Jesus blood was poured out for you’ is certainly accessible to both churched and un-churched. This is a good time to mention again that it’s ok for a poster to target a specific demographic without working in the same way for everyone.

We think this poster is a good reminder for passers by to consider something less transient and ephemeral – the sacrifice of Christ for the world.

NotesThis poster comes from a request we had from a pastor in Sydney’s south west who lives in an area with many ethnic groups. But it has real application all over Australia.

A report from Riyana Miranti, of Canberra University in 2010 found that Australia is the second most multicultural society after Luxembourg. And the ethnic mix isn’t just confined to the big cities. There are people in country towns and regional centres around Australia hailing from the four corners of the globe. Some of them are refugees and many feel terribly displaced. The Christian community should be a natural refuge for such people.

This poster communicates that all nations are welcome and sends a strong anti racist message to our community.

NotesEach year we’re hoping to feature an Australian who’s made an important contribution to Australian society. This person may or may not be famous. We have a number of candidates in mind for 2014 and beyond. We’ll let you know more information as we confirm their availability. If you’d like to nominate an exceptional Australian Christian for this spot then please let us know. All suggestions gratefully received.

September 2014

A special campaign We’re excited to announce a special campaign month for September designed to demonstrate the Bible’s ability to answer hard questions with integrity. We hope and pray that many people come to know Jesus Christ as their saviour through this campaign. We’re also hoping that many Christian churches and organisations join in with this campaign. We’ll announce more details about who’s involved in the coming months.

In briefThis poster’s prominently featured website AskGod.Com.Au will allow people to post questions and personalized responses. Those who post will also be able to see on the website how their question ranks in terms of popularity. It is hoped that special talks will be held in capital cities to provide a forum for the most commonly asked questions. Please let us know if your church would like to run an ‘AskGod.Com.Au’ Q&A meeting.

Based around a website and email rather than SMS or Facebook the campaign relies on people emailing questions and receiving answers through the AskGod.Com.Au website. This method is preferred over SMS texting or Facebook for the following reasons.

1. Because people usually have only one mobile phone number they guard it more carefully than an email address. It’s not uncommon for people to have a number of email addresses. Spam filters can also deal with unwanted email.

2. Email is better for long form answers.

3. Despite there being over 11 million Australians on Facebook, there are still many who aren’t. By running the campaign through our own website we can still leverage Facebook but also tailor the look and feel as well as functionality in ways that Facebook either can’t provide or won’t allow.

How it worksChurch teams/individuals/bible studies and evangelists from a range of organisations will be encouraged to promote the AskGod.Com.Au URL through personal invitation, social media, email, postering, cards etc.

Those who post questions at AskGod.Com.Au will be required to give an email address so that an answer can be sent to them. We will make it clear on the website that contact details will not be kept for any future marketing or outreach activity (or perhaps offer the option of joining an email list). The website will show a list of the most popular questions ranked. It may also show another column or breakout box that features unusual questions.

Campaign organisationOutreach Media will work in advance in the following areas.

1. Determine likely questionsOutreach Media is confident in predicting the kinds of questions likely to be received. We will build a list of responses to these questions in advance as well as assembling a team of people to help with the answering and coordination of responses.

2. Generate promotional materialOutreach Media will seek to generate:

a. ‘Mission Pack’ items for churches and ministries that may include posters, cards, flyers that can be customised, T-shirts and bumper stickers. These would be printed by Outreach Media for a fee.

b. Customised online advertising for local churches. This will target people that are geographically close to the church through banner ads on websites and Facebook.

Availability of the above will depend on expressions of interest from churches and individuals. So, please let us know if you’re interested in joining in with this mission.

NotesIn Acts 4:12 Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit said the following about Jesus,

‘there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”

This months’ poster is a challenge to people on this topic. It’s a conversation starter that it would be wise for churches to be ready for.

December 2014

NotesAustralian Christmases are usually hot, sweaty affairs. For many a white European Christmas is an ancestral memory or a frosty Hollywood notion. But Outreach Media is declaring Christmas 2014 a white Christmas!

The inspiration is from Isaiah 1:18 where the prophet speaks of a time when the sins of God’s people will no longer be scarlet but white as snow. The idea is about cleansing and purification from sin, something that the Lord Jesus accomplishes for us at the cross.

Send a postcard to your neighbourhoodWe think this poster has excellent mission potential. Let us know if you’d like to use our snowmaker at your church. Actually, we don’t have one, but we can print this image for you on cards at affordable prices. We can customise the card with text on the back that relates to your mission context.
