The General Secretary’s Thoughts

“Prisoner of Christ and forgiveness”

Our dear faithful prayer partners,

I am writing this letter from NewZealand where my wife Mercy and Iare visiting prayer partners and

supporters of IEM.

Western Missionaries: During our visit,Mercy and I met a few missionarieswho had served in India for many years. Now, though they have gone on in yearsand are weak, their love for the Lordand His Mission is still burning brightin their hearts. When they shared theirexperiences, our spirits and emotionsmelted. Interestingly, Des Worrall livedin Tamil Nadu and learnt Tamil. Now,although he suffers from dementia, hehas not forgotten Tamil. In fact, hespeaks, sings and prays in Tamil! Des &Dorothy paid a heavy price, travellingby ship for a month to far off India andthen by train to reach differentdestinations where they settled asmissionaries. They lived with limitedfacilities and faced the challenges ofweather, language, culture andprimitive conditions.

What struck us was that none of thesemissionaries made a mention of thehardships they went through; ratherthey rejoiced in the Lord for theopportunity to be His witnesses. Theywere happy that IEM continues to sendhundreds of missionaries. Our eyesfilled with tears as we thanked God forthe hundreds who came to India andproclaimed the Gospel. Some of themstarted off to India but died during thejourney.

Corruption: These days, we are awareof the lobbying to put an end to

corruption in India. While weappreciate these efforts and campaigns,

we would like to be passive in our

response because we are not sure about

the effectiveness of these endeavours.

As followers of Christ, we are asked to

pray for our authorities and

governments. Corruption is the side

effect of the root problem – sin. Let us

pray that God will use this to bring

about a deep conviction of sin, leading

to repentance as in the case of the city

of Nineveh. If God’s people humble

themselves and pray and turn from

their wicked ways, the Lord has

promised healing to their land.

Partnership: IEM thrives on

partnerships with several Churches and

Mission agencies. Partnerships are the

biblical pattern of missionary work. We

are partnering in different ministries

such as outreach, community

development, radio programmes, Bible

translation, Scripture engagement,

training local leaders , church planting,

medical ministries, women and

children ministry, member care. The

list goes on.

Our partner churches feel that IEM is

their Mission and IEM mission fields

are their mission fields. IEM does not

want to compete with or threaten

churches; rather, IEM complements the

church in fulfilling the command of the

Lord. IEM cooperates with any Mission

or Church which wants to build the

Kingdom of God. Many mission

agencies are coming forward to work

together with new strategies and in

different ministries. We thank each one

of them for their partnership with us. In

this issue, we bring you various facets of

our partnerships with many Christian

agencies both on the mission field as well as

Paul and Partnership: When Paul wrote

a beautiful and

thought-

provoking letter

to the wealthy

Philemon, who

owned a slave

named

Onesimus, he

said, “So if you

consider me a

partner, welcome him as you would

welcome me” (v17). This letter was

written by a real prisoner to a “prisoner

of Christ” asking him to forgive

someone and enjoy complete

deliverance in Jesus Christ. The

foundation and the motivation for such

a request was partnership in the

Gospel. The more we study the

Scriptures, the truth on forgiveness

comes out profoundly.

A prisoner of Christ is the recipient of

the Lord’s forgiveness. Becoming a child

of God is a

process.

Christ’s

followers

were slaves to

sin until Christ

delivered them

and made them, “Prisoners of Christ.” This

happened when they accepted the

forgiveness of Christ and appropriated

for themselves. They heard, believed, called, repented, received and confessed

Jesus Christ as their Lord and Master.

The process continues.

A prisoner of Christ reaches out to

others with forgiveness. When

followers of Christ understand theforgiveness granted to them, they in

turn, with thankful hearts and humility

reach out to others asking for

forgiveness. Their unworthiness

constrains them not to hold any grudge,

anger, bitterness or hostility againstanyone just like the father who received

the younger son who had wasted the

father’s property and hurt him deeply.

The father reached out to his son

without any reservation. Whenever, I

think of this and acceptance of theHeavenly Father, I breakdown and say,

“Just as I am without one plea.” Is there

anyone to whom I haven’t reached out

to with the forgiveness of Christ?

A prisoner of Christ recommends

forgiveness. Paul commands Philemonto, “Welcome him as you would

welcome me” (v17). Who was Paul to

command Philemon? Paul had spiritual

authority. Without spiritual authority,

Page 4: OUTREACH - Indian Evangelical Mission & LAYOUT: Mr Dominic Sa vio J € IEM OUTREACH is published by Indian Evangelical Mission in English, Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada, Telugu Oriya,

October 20114

we can’t order someone to forgiveothers. If we have not forgiven someone

we have no right to ask someone else to

forgive. Forgiveness is costly. Therefore

he says, “If Onesimus has done you any

wrong or owes you anything, charge it

to me” (v18). As prisoners of Christ, weare expected to recommend forgiveness.

There is no “quick fix” method.

A prisoner of Christ rejoices over

forgiven people. We don’t know what

has happened to

Onesimus. I am

sure Paul was

confident that

Philemon would

have heeded

Paul’s plea and forgiven Onesimus.

Forgiveness brings joy not only between

the people whose relationship was

restored, but also to those around

them. When we meet at the foot of the

Cross, we rejoice not because we are

perfect people, but because we are

forgiven. If we are not happy, perhaps

we haven’t forgiven someone from our

hearts. When we reach out to others

with the spirit of forgiveness, our joy

will be boundless.

As partners, we invite you to do two

things for us. 1. Please pray for the

ensuing IEM National Convention at

Kottayam, Kerala. 2. Please come for

the convention. We look forward to

meeting you,.

With you, at the foot of the Cross rejoicing

“Hand in hand, we’ll work together as one!” This statement wonderfully weaves

together the mystery of partnerships. From the word go, God never intended the

crown of His creation to be alone. In fact, He instituted and established marriage

which is the most sacred of all partnerships.

We live in an individualistic society. Business ventures use partners to further

their own goals and aspirations. “What is in it for me?” is the all important

question. Even in the recent uprising against corruption, we discovered many

champions of the anti-corruption movement trying to establish their credentials

by partnering with others.

From its inception in 1965, the Indian Evangelical Mission is in the business of

partnering with like-minded agencies and churches. We praise God that, working

together, much has been achieved in the areas of training leaders, Bible

translation, education, relief and development, transmission of the Gospel

through media like radio, CDs and DVDs. It is indeed wonderful to see how God

can use technology to transmit the Gospel where missionaries may not be able to

go. Each specialized ministry, working together can indeed weave awesome

achievements for God. In the end, nobody takes the credit for the work done. God

gives the increase and people benefit. These achievements are outlined in the

pages that follow.

In this issue, we feature a brief update on the ministry among the Garasia people

of North Gujarat and Rajasthan. Our missionaries pioneered the work in 1978.

Dr Vinod Shah and his wife Dr Shalini Shah stepped out by faith after completing

their medicine at Christian Medical College and Hospital, Vellore. God grew the

ministry and the team was strengthened. Many sowed the seed, some watered but

God gave the increase. Many Garasia people received physical and spiritual

nurture and stand today as testimonies of the faithfulness of God. A major

landmark was the release of the Garasia New Testament after missionaries,

Dinesh & Victoria Patel worked for over 2 decades on the translation. We cannot

forget our prayer partners who backed us up in prayer and through their

generous financial contributions.

The 47th National Convention is at Kottayam from October 13-16, 2011. Please

make a special effort to be there. If you really cannot make it, please pray that

this convention will be a great blessing to all who attend. Again, we cannot do it

alone. Please partner with us.

(The way forward in any venture is forging partnerships for best results. In

missionary work, the principle is no different. This month, Bishop Pradeep Kumar

Samantaroy vividly outlines the benefits of vibrant partnerships, beginning with

God Himself. Bishop Samantaroy is from Orissa. He began as a missionary, served as

faculty in Serampore and has since been serving as the Bishop in Amritsar Diocese

for the past 12 years. He encouraged and ordained several IEM missionaries,

especially those working in the north Indian states. He and his wife Lily are blessed

with 2 daughters.)

Bible Study

Progressive Partnership

Our God is a God of

partnerships. In the creation

account, God(Elohim) said, “Let

us make man in our image, after our

likeness”(Genesis 1:26). John 1:1-3

says, “In the beginning was the Word,

and the Word was with God and the

Word was God. He was in the beginning

with God. All things were made throughhim, and without him was not anything

made that was made.” This is a clear

indication that God the Father was in

active cooperation with God the Son in

His creative activity. The man and the

woman who were created in the imageof God also suggest that partnership is

a fundamental purpose in God’s creation.

Further, the Bible tells us about the

perfect harmony within the Trinity-

Father the Creator, Son the Redeemer

and Holy Spirit the Sustainer.

Therefore, we are encouraged to work inpartnership in every sphere of lives.

Synergy in Partnership

After drawing insight from the Triune

God, we will now look at some practical

aspects of partnership.

Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 says, “Two are

better than one, because they have a

good return for their work: If one falls

down, his friend can help him up. But

pity the man who falls and has no one

to help him up! Also, if two lie down

together, they will keep warm. But how

can one keep warm alone? Though one

may be overpowered, two can defend

themselves. A cord of three strands is

not quickly broken. Partnership

provides productivity, protection, help,

warmth and strength.

Many biblical examples demonstrate

meaningful partnerships.

1. Team work by Moses, Aaron, Miriam

and Jethro made it possible for the

Rt. Rev. Pradeep Kumar Samantaroy

Page 7: OUTREACH - Indian Evangelical Mission & LAYOUT: Mr Dominic Sa vio J € IEM OUTREACH is published by Indian Evangelical Mission in English, Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada, Telugu Oriya,

October 20117

Israelites to enter the land flowing

with milk and honey. Moses was the

leader, assisted by Aaron and

Miriam. Jethro was the counsellor.

2. The story of Naomi and Ruth gives

us a vivid picture of mutual support

and encouragement that led to a

bold commitment by Ruth and

ultimately a blessed ancestry into

which Jesus was born.

3. The story in Mark 2: 1-5 tells us how

a helpless paralytic in a seemingly

hopeless situation was healed by

Jesus because of unorthodox,

daring, confident and persistent

action of the 4 men of great faith.

They did what was not customary

those days. They were so passionate

about what they were doing that

they risked of being rebuked or even

rejected.

Mutuality in Partnership

John the Baptist announces, “He must

increase, but I must decrease.” (John

3:30) He acknowledges that the

authority and influence of Jesus among

the people must grow and His message

shall continue to spread until it extends

through all the earth. John humbly

commits, “I must decrease”. The

purpose of John’s ministry was to point

men to Jesus. When that is done His

work is done. He admits that He came

not to form a party of his own, nor to

set up a religion of his own; and his

teaching must cease when he is fully

established, as the light of the morning

star fades away and is lost in the beams

of the rising sun. Progressive partnership

demands recognition of one’s own

limitation and transfer of the baton to

the appointed partner in God’s mission.

Paul says, I have planted, Apollos

watered; but God gave the increase. So

then neither is he that plants anything,

neither he that waters; but God that

gives the increase (1 Corinthians 3:6-7).

We ourselves are not to be glorified,”

but we are to glorify God alone for the

good accomplished in the salvation of

souls through the gospel of Christ” (1

Corinthians 3:21; 4:6). At the same time,

we can be thankful for men and women

who faithfully plant and faithfully

water. Paul reminds us that mission

belongs to God alone and we are all

partner participants in His mission.

This understanding of partnership

encourages us to be servant disciples

and to promote stewardship of God’s

kingdom on earth.

Unity of purpose in Partnership

The greatest threat to witnessing Christ

today is division among the Christians.

Paul in I Corinthians 12.:12 asserts, “

For just as the body is one and has

many members, and all the members of

the body, though many, are one body, so

it is with Christ.” We ought to rejoice in

the fact that God has made us different

from each other and has given us

specific gifts by grace. However different

we might be, we can join hands together

in unity to serve one purpose, that is

building the body of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Paul says, “For by the grace given to me

I say to everyone among you not to

think of himself more highly than he

ought to think, but to think with sober

judgment, each according to the

measure of faith that God has assigned.

For as in one body we have many

members, and the members do not all

have the same function, so we, though

many, are one body in Christ, and

Page 8: OUTREACH - Indian Evangelical Mission & LAYOUT: Mr Dominic Sa vio J € IEM OUTREACH is published by Indian Evangelical Mission in English, Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada, Telugu Oriya,

October 20118

individually members one of another.

Having gifts that differ according to the

grace given to us, let us use them: if

prophecy, in proportion to our faith; if

service, in our serving; the one who

teaches, in his teaching; the one who

exhorts, in his exhortation; the one who

contributes, in generosity; the one who

leads, with zeal; the one who does acts of

mercy, with cheerfulness.” (Rom. 12:3-8).

Connectedness in Partnership

Connectedness bears fruit. Jesus said, “

I am the vine; you are the branches.

Whoever abides in me and I in him, he

it is that bears much fruit, for apart

from me you can do nothing”. In order

to remain connected we have to develop

interest in each other, improve our

understanding , respect each other’s

space and allow space. When we get

connected we become open to our

partner and eventually demonstrate

transparency and accountability. One

must bear in mind that not every kind of

connectedness will bear fruit. Consider

the example of Annanias & Saphira

(Acts 5:1-11). They both were of one

mind but for the wrong purpose. They

lied to the servants of God out of greed

and invited instant death. Their

opportunity to get connected with the

other disciples was lost. Honesty is an

essential element of partnership that

cannot be compromised.

We know that God is capable of

fulfilling His mission without our

involvement and contribution. But God

always lowers Himself to such an extent

that we can grasp his purpose and

partner with Him in His mission at our

level with our inadequacies and

shortcomings. The Church too has an

opportunity for a meaningful

partnership in doing mission.

Should we let the chance go?

REPORT OF THE GOSPEL CAMPS FOR DRUNKARDSREPORT OF THE GOSPEL CAMPS FOR DRUNKARDSREPORT OF THE GOSPEL CAMPS FOR DRUNKARDSREPORT OF THE GOSPEL CAMPS FOR DRUNKARDSREPORT OF THE GOSPEL CAMPS FOR DRUNKARDSThe Lord laid a burden on us to organise a Gospel Camp for drunkards about ayear ago. The Lord heard our prayer and a family agreed to sponsor the camp. Twenty eight drunkards registered for the camp from April 28 – May 1, 2011. Rev. T. Sholal shared the Word and all 28 campers accepted the Lord.  I conducted2 follow up progammes and encouraged them to start a weekly Bible study andprayer meeting.  A second camp was organised from July 14-17. Rev. T. Sholalwas the speaker..

Twenty one new friends attended and they in turn acceptedthe Lord.   Now 49 former drunkards are shining and vibrantwitnesses for the Lord in their respective Churches andvillages. They decided that the offerings taken during theThursday meeting with go to the IEM ministry.

The Pastor, Church leaders and all the villagers, especiallythe wives and children are so happy.  On August 31,they organised a one day family retreat.  All glory to God.

Church and Mission

Seamless, Strong, Productive

For many, the word “Church”

represents a great institution, for

others it serves as a recreation

centre while for some others; it is a

place where charity begins!

Most often, the church is understood to

denote a building, an edifice or a

landmark where Christians meet

Sunday after Sunday. So, in order to

attract people, the church building is

beautified and bestowed with

bountifully decorated.

There’s nothing wrong in keeping our

church buildings clean. In fact, a poorly

maintained church building is a bad

testimony to non-Christians. Sadly,

however, many Christians maintain a

clean building because they do not

understand the mandate and the

ministry of the church which is the

Bride of Christ!

So, what is the Church?

Primarily, the church ought to be an

EVANGELISTIC CENTRE. It should be

HOUSE OF PRAYER. It must also be a

SCHOOL where people are grounded in

the Word of God before they venture out

as witnesses. The church is a PLACE OF

FELLOWSHIP.

What is Missions

Now let’s look at the word “Missions.”

This word comes from the Latin root

word meaning “Mitto” which means “I

send.” Therefore, a missionary is a sent

one. The main task of the early church

was to be obedient to the Great

Commission. (Matthew: 28: 18-20, Mark

16:15, Luke 24:47-48, John 17:18, 20:21-

22.) Hudson Taylor declared, “The Great

Commission is not an option but an

obligation – a commandment to obey. In

other words the mission of the church

should be missions.” Spurgeon

explained, “God cannot use dead tools

to work living miracles”.

Early church involvement

The church at Jerusalem was actively

involved in missionary work. Acts 8:1,4-

5 and 11:19-20 talk about how the

church participated by praying, sending

and supporting missionaries. The

church at Antioch Church did not lag

far behind. They commissioned Paul

and Barnabas after fasting and praying

for them. Such was their fervor. (Acts

13: 2-3) In Galatians 2:9, we read about

the wholehearted involvement of the

church at Galatia.

Why is the church not involved?

Here are some factors that do not need

to be explained.

1) Norminalism

2) Visionless leaders

3) Spiritual decadence

(a backslidden state)

4) Ignorance

5) Disobedience to God’s call

Page 10: OUTREACH - Indian Evangelical Mission & LAYOUT: Mr Dominic Sa vio J € IEM OUTREACH is published by Indian Evangelical Mission in English, Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada, Telugu Oriya,

October 201110

Road-blocks for Involvement

i) Very few believers in the church

ii) Apparent economic loss

iii) Church customs and practices

might be broken

iv) Bad reputation of some

organizations

v) Visionless Pastors

So Why Church Involvement in Missions ?

First and foremost – it is the HEART

THROB of God.(Genesis 12:3, Isaiah

49:6, I Timothy 1:15, Luke: 19:10,

Matthew 4:19). Next, because the

harvest is truly plentiful. By 2020

India’s population will be the highest in

the world at 1.3 billion. Only 7000

pincode regions have any pastor,

evangelist, or missionary. Only 187

missionary organizations are working

in India.

Second, as Christians, we obligated to

preach the Gospel (Matthew 18: 18-20/

Mark 16:15). Why? Because many are

perishing. (Acts 17: 30, II Peter 3:9) and

the Second Coming of Jesus is near.

Church involvement in Missions

Gather Information

Pray / Go / Support a Missionary

Mobilize youth to get involved in

So what are you waiting for? The time

to start is NOW!

Wedding Bells

We are happy to announce the marriage of

Kirupa, daughter of Mrs Christal (IEM

pray that God will bless this couple and make

them a blessing as they begin their life as man

and wife.

Not everyone is called to be

missionaries! Now before you

sit back and relax, let me hasten

to add that no one who bears the name

of Christ is exempt from being part of

God’s grand agenda for the salvation of

mankind!

What Can I do?

You can pray for those who are serving

on the frontline. In an army, the soldiers

on the battlefront will be defeated if

they are not backed up by people

“behind the scenes” who work tirelessly

to see that they are sufficiently supplied

in order to give their utmost for the Master.

Do I qualify?

Here’s your checklist.

· A genuine Born-again experience

· A member of a local Bible believing

church which teaches sound doctrine

· A good testimony in the local

community

· Recognised by local Pastors and

Church leaders

· Should be accepted by local Pastors

and Christians in general as a good

leader

· Should have a Vision for missions,

especially through IEM

· Should have a right understanding

about IEM - its goals and objectives

· Should be willing to serve as an

Honorary Area Secretary as per the

· Should be able to pray for and

mobilise Prayer for the Mission

Partners in Missions – Area Secretary

They Also Serve

· Should be willing to raise Financial

Support for the Mission

What will be my Role?

· To promote the Goals and Objectives

of IEM

· To prayerfully mobilise Prayer Cells

· To encourage local Christians to give

for missions

· To promptly send the funds

collected to the Finance Department

in Bangalore

· To act as a liaison between your own

church, other local churches and the

IEM

· To help the Local IEM full- time

personnel whenever and wherever

neededContinued on next page

Page 12: OUTREACH - Indian Evangelical Mission & LAYOUT: Mr Dominic Sa vio J € IEM OUTREACH is published by Indian Evangelical Mission in English, Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada, Telugu Oriya,

· To organize IEM Sundays locally in

different churches throughout the

year

· To organize 3-day IEM meetings

locally at least once a year in order

to create an awareness on missions

· To start as many Prayer Cells as

possible locally and mobilize prayer

support for missions.

· To invite IEM missionaries from the

mission field to share their field

ministry and field experiences with

the supporters

· As the number of prayer partners

and supporters increase, you should

be able to identify and recommend

new people who are committed to

serve the Lord through IEM as

Honorary Area Secretaries

Are you ready to go? Prayerfully contact

your local IEM full-time church ministries’

Associate. There’s so much to be done!

The term “partnership” is the most

talked about word these days.

From government formation to

running a small business, partnership

plays an important role. Whether in the

corporate world of in ministry, suitable

partners can improve the quality of the

work done.

The Progress of Partnerships

Initially, partnering with other

organizations may raise many questions

and doubts. One can look at it as a

waste of time, energy, funds and resources

because it much discussion takes place

before agreements are formulated. But

let’s look at the advantages as well.

§ Duplication of work can be avoided

§ Training of missionaries, resources,

expertise and infrastructure can be

mutually shared

§ Increased quality output, faster

results, more resource and funds

Partnership

God’s Word to Bible-lessLanguages

can be made available

IEM discovered the strength of

partnerships with other missionagencies right from its inception.Around 30 years ago, we entered into apartnership with Indian Institute ofCross Cultural Communication (IICCC)to train our missionaries in the Bibletranslation and Scripture engagementministry. This trend continues with theWycliffe India (Win). Presently, IEM ispartnering with many agencies involvedin Bible translation and Scriptureengagement. Some areas where we arehaving partnership are given below:

TRAINING: Wycliffe India and otheragencies give specialized training to themissionaries involved in the Bibletranslation and Literacy ministry. At thesame time, IEM sends Bible translatorsand literacy missionaries to teach incourses and workshops conducted byWycliffe India. We also provide

consultant help to translation teams

from different mission organizations.

PRINTING: The Bible Society of India

helps us in printing the New Testament

at a subsidized rate. Recently, the Bible

Society printed New Testaments in three

Bible-less languages which were

translated by our Bible translators.

TECHNICAL SUPPORT:In Bible

translation and Literacy ministries,

computers play a major role. New Life

Computer Institute and Wycliffe India

provide technical support. They develop

and provide software to all the

translators, type set the text and train

the missionaries who are involved in

Bible translation and Literacy.

EQUIPMENTS AND GADGETS: Wycliffe,

The Seed Company and other agencies

provide financial aid for equipment and

training for Bible Translators as well

as for printing scripture portions.

LITERACY & MULTI-LINGUAL EDUCATION

Multi Lingual Education(MLE) is a State

Government programme which provides

primary education to tribal children in

their own mother tongue upto standard

5. A few Indian states have started this

programme. Some of our translators

are involved in this. They help the

Government in providing materials in

tribal language besides training

teachers. Some of IEM’s literacy teams

have prepared materials which the

governments have printed and are using

in their literacy classes.

There are many more partners who are

praying for the translation and literacy

work. They visiting the mission fields

and invite the translation and literacy

teams to their home to know more

about the work. With much gratitude,

we acknowledge the contribution all

our partner mission agencies who have

played a key role along with us in this

great ministry.

Around 100 people groups are still

without the Bible in their own mother

tongue. If God is leading you, please

join us as a Bible translation

missionary. We also invite you to

become a partner with us by praying for

more Bible translation and Scripture

engagement teams, promoting the

ministry of Bible translation and by

supporting us in providing Gods Word

to all the Bible less languages.

Media has a growing influence on people. Therefore, IEM ventured into making use

of media in our mission fields. We entered into partnership with many Christian

media agencies. Here is an overview.

Media in the Mission Fields

A Blossoming Partnership

IEM and Trans World Radio (TWR)

TWR broadcasts in 67 languages for 22

hours in medium wave and short wave.

In partnership with TWR, Kukna radio

programmes are being broadcast on a

biweekly schedule. Cds in Koya and

Garasia languages are produced while

audio Cds in Korku, Kuvi, Kotia and

Bison Horn Madia are also under

production. TWR distributed radios to

Koya believers. A small mobile phone

sized audio device called Mega Voice

with 35 messages in Hindi and English

was gifted to our missionaries and

evangelists. This devise can be charged

by electricity and sunlight and is the

best tool which can be used in villages.

TWR helped us start Radio Homes in

our mission fields (A Radio Home is a

Bible Study group which meets regularly

in a Christian home just to listen to

radio messages using a Cd player). The

Cd contains radio Bible studies from

Genesis to Revelation.

In future, TWR is willing to produce

many more radio broadcasts and

explore many other avenues of

communicating the Gospel through the

audio format in our IEM mission fields.

IEM and Far East Broadcasting Associates

(FEBA)

FEBA broadcasts in various languages

in India in Short wave, Medium Wave

and FM. Through this partnership we

have weekly radio broadcasts in Koya

language. We also distributed audio

Cds containing Koya radio messages to

our Koya believers through FEBA radio.

FEBA is willing to broadcast in one

more North Indian tribal language.

IEM and World Cassette Outreach of

India(WCOI)

World Cassette Outreach produces the

Bible in audio format in all major

languages and in tribal languages using

a single voice. They also provide a

device to listen to the recorded Bible.

They have completed the recording of

the Garasia New Testament in audio

format. Continued on Page 25

From its inception, the Indian

Evangelical Mission has enjoyed

a cordial partnership with

various Christian relief and

development agencies especially on our

mission fields.

We praise God for agencies like

Evangelical Fellowship of India

Commission on Relief(EFICOR)

COMPASSION, Emmanuel Hospital

Association(EHA), Christian

Broadcasting Network(CBN), Christian

Medical College and Hospital(CMC & H)

and TENT who help us access the needs

on the mission fields and supplied the

men and material to meet those needs.

Our missionaries serve as conduits

through which the blessings flow.

Emmanuel Hospital Association has a

number of hospitals, most of which are located in North India. On their

invitation, we sent missionaries to work in the villages surrounding these

hospitals. EHA sends their medical personnel to treat patients at medical camps

organised by our missionaries. In turn, our missionaries minister to patients

during the OPD. Currrently, we work with EHA hospitals in Raxaul in Bihar and

Fatehpur, Utraula and Herbertpur in Uttar Pradesh and Chattarpur and

Lakhnadon in Madhya Pradesh. Self-help groups in another vital aspect where

people who are at the mercy of landlords can be taught to stand on their own 2 feet.

CMC, Vellore is training our missionaries to basic Community heath. This does

not mean that they take the place of doctors. However they are trained to treat

basis ailments on the spot. Presently 18 missionaries have been trained. Our

goal is to train 100 missionaries.

In addition to these partners, we praise God for Indienhilfe who are involved in

the Jeevan Jyothi Boys’ Hostel in Krishagiri, Tamil Nadu. Their involvement in the

lives of these boys is a great investment. Pandita Ramabhai Mukti Mission and

IEM have enjoyed and continue to enjoy a strong partnership in the hostel ministry.

We have partnered in the establishment and running of hostels around the country.

Prayer ought to be an essential

ingredient in the life of every

Christian. Without prayer, a

Christian of a church is as good as

dead. The Bible says, “Not praying is

also sin” (I Samuel 12:23). We have

seminars where people are taught how

to read the Bible, how to teach and

preach effectively and so on. However,

the focus on prayer among Christians is

surprisingly minimal.

IEM stands because of prayer. Over theyears, this we have understood the

strength of prayer. We praise God for

those who stand behind us upholding

us regularly in their prayers. We have

individuals, families and churchessupporting us through their prayers. Yet

some still want to know how they can

pray for missions and mobilize prayer

support for missions. All over India to

day we have 500 Prayer Cells which are

earnestly functioning for the Glory ofGod. Here are few steps for those who

are willing to start a prayer cell.

1. How to organize a prayer cell?

(Matthew 18:19-20)

a) Gather like minded people from

your surrounding area or

neighborhood who are willing to

join with you in prayer. (families,

office colleagues, house wives,

college students)

b) Select a house or a common place

where everybody can conveniently

meet for prayer

c) Schedule a specific time and

frequency when everyone can meet.

Prayer Cells

The Powerhouse of Missions

Never postpone a prayer cell. Avoid

last minute changes.

d) Inform the members well in

advance. If possible remind them

once on that day.

e) Punctuality should be maintained.

Be on time.

f) Don’t wait for late comers.

g) Prepare prayer points in advance.

Write requests on small cards or

papers as per your convenience, for

distribution during the prayer time.

h) Housewives can also meet during

the day either 11am to 12pm or 3pm

to 4 pm according to their convenience.

2. How to divide the time?

(Duration – One Hour)

Start the Prayer Cell with a couple of

songs of praise and worship. Do not

turn the prayer cell into a singing

session or Bible study. Remember, may

of them come for prayer cell after a

tiring day’s work. Let it not be too

lengthy for them.

10 or 15 minutes of short devotion can

be taken by one of the members who is

informed earlier.

15 minutes is used for sharing personal

testimonies and experiences.

30 minutes is for IEM prayer points:

during the prayer time prayer cards

may be distributed or a video or slide

presentation can be arranged or if a

missionary is in town on that day, he

may be asked to share about his

ministry and prayer request. Be apt in

praying for any request. Missionary

prayer cell should mainly emphasize

prayers for missionaries, and the work

among the unreached people groups,

persecutions, responses etc.,

Don’t pray for unnecessary things. Pray

for only given requests. Avoid personal

prayers and church prayer during IEM

prayer cell.

“When we pray God does wonders in

our mission fields” (Ex.17:10-11)

Let each person pray for one request

only. Depending on the size of the Group

and number of prayer points available,

two or three requests can be prayed by

one person.

What is an ideal Group in a prayer Cell?

There are Groups which has 20 or more

in a prayer cell. The Ideal Group is 10-

15. If it exceeds, start a new prayer cell.

At the end, make announcement of the

next prayer cells venue, date and time.

They now supply the recorded Garasia

audio New Testament using the Mega

Voice.

IEM and Beulah Ministry

Beulah ministry provides a dramatic

version of the audio New Testament in

tribal and as well major languages

using multiple voices. They also

provide a small battery light sized

audio device to listen to the audio New

Testament. Very soon, they are planning

to provide the audio New Testament in

Koya and Kotia language.

IEM and Variety film &

Communication(VFC)

VFC is making a special effort to

produce videos in many tribal

languages which could be used as tool

for evangelism and teaching. VFC

produced 2 CDs in Kuvi and Koya

languages. We are using these in our

mission fields. They are also planning

to produce video Cds in Batri and Bison

Horn Madia languages in partnership

with IEM.

Pray that these various partnerships

will give God’s word to people in all our

mission fields and many will receive

our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ as

their Saviour and Lord.

We are a team of

missionary

bachelors. Even

though the field is vast, God is

faithful, using us in spite of

all many difficulties. Working

together with us is a team of 3 young

evangelist families from the Garasia

community. They include Shambu bhai,

Pappu and Babu bhai and their

families. We thank God for their life

and commitment, labouring among

their own people for His glory.

On April 25, 2009, the Garasia New

Testament was dedicated and

distributed to our believers and any

interested Garasia people. Bible

Translators Dinesh & Victoria Patel

labored for about 28 years to see that

God’s Word was given in written form

to the Garasia people. We praise God

that this is a great blessing in their lives.

We praise God that 5 believers openly

confessed their faith in the Lord on

March 14, 2010. They are growing in the

Lord. Now there are 47 believers and

more than a 100 seekers.

After ministering to the Garasia people

for 30 years, God enabled IEM to build

a Church building in Dabavalivav. This

landmark was dedicated on April 25,

2010.

In June,2010 we opened a hostel for 12

children. God hand-picked Joseph and

his family, from among the Garasia

people who are committed to serve

these precious buds.

In the beginning , God helped us to

work in around 20 villages in Gujarat

and Rajasthan. In March 2009, God

began to open the hearts of the people

to the Gospel. In March 2010, God gave

us openings in 41 villages. In

November 2010, the number grew to 48

and July 2011 we can see people from

58 villages coming to worship the Lord.

The Challenge

One of the greatest challenges before us

is to bring all 58 villages under the

banner of Christ and also develop able

local leaders. We hope to form the

Garasia Society. Secondly, we want to

see a hostel building for the Garasia

people in their own land! We also wish

to have a partnership with a school

where our children can be taught the

Word of God. We believe that God will

bring this vision into reality.

Missionaries David & Svea Flood were

commissioned by the Philadelphia

Pentecostal Church in Sweden to work

in Belgian Congo( present-day Zaire) in

1921. When they arrived at a village

called Ndolera in the Congo jungle, the

local chief refused to let them enter.

Their only contact was with a small boy

from the village who would sell chicken

and eggs to them twice a week.

Svea spoke lovingly to this small boy

and led him to Christ. Meanwhile, their

fellow missionaries, the Ericksons

became sick and had to return to their

base station. The Floods too were very

sick. Svea became pregnant and gave

birth to a baby girl. Due to the loss of

blood and weakness, Svea died within

17 days of the birth of her daughter.

Her husband was shocked and returned

to Sweden after handing over the baby

girl, Aina to the Ericksons.

The Ericksons also died and Aina was

given to some American missionaries

who renamed her Aggie. They took her

to the United States and she grew up in

South Dakota where she attended the

North Central Bible College in

Minneapolis. There she met and

married Dewey Hurst who became the

president of a Christian college in Seattle.

From her adoptive parents, Aggie heard

about her early days as well as about

her Dad who was living in Sweden. Then

she came across a magazine that had

published the story of Svea & David’s

work in Ndolera village. She learnt

that the small boy whom Svea had led

Biography: Svea Flood

to the Lord had

managed to bring

at least 600 people

in that village to

Christ. Aggie went

to Sweden and told

her father about

this. He wept and

recommitted his

life to God and

passed away soon after.

At a conference in London, Aggie met a

Christian leader from the Belgian Congo

who was the superintendent of the

national church in the Congo. He

turned out to be the same small boy

who had led 600 people in Ndolera to

the Lord after being saved through Svea

Flood’s ministry. At his invitation, Aggie

visited her mother’s grave in that

village and met all the enthusiastic

village-folk. This beautiful saga ended

with Aggie penning the whole story of

her parents’ sacrificial ministry. Not

long after, Aggie discovered that she

had cancer and went to be with the

Lord. The one seed that had died

produced a harvest of souls!

A Pioneer Missionary’s

reflections

In 1973, when we surveyed the Chinnoor forest area in

Adilabad district of Andhra Pradesh, we came to know

that tribal people were living there. So we started “Christ

for Indian Tribes” in 1973. After our marriage my wife and

I ventured there as pioneer missionaries. In 1974, Annachi

(Rev. Dr. Theodore Williams) asked us to join IEM.

In Chinnoor, we started Sunday worship service, women

prayer meetings, youth meetings and Sunday school. The

children learnt many truths from the Bible and believed in

Christ. In 1980, we moved to Neelwai where we prayed for

needy people. Within 3 months, 25 believers openly confessed their faith in the

Lord. Since then, many people openly confessed their faith every year. We were led

to build a small church structure.

In 1996, we went to South India Biblical Seminary(SIBS) and completed our

theological studies. Then we went to Chennai to promote the ministry of IEM

among Telugu speaking people. In November 2002, I underwent a bypass surgery

but God raised me up miraculously by His grace

In 2004 we came to Vanasthalipuram, Hyderabad and began visiting 87 homes in 26

locations to share the Word of God. Our supporters are growing and active members

in their respective churches. They are faithful in their jobs, scripture-reading and

prayer. Women too are active. We conduct fasting prayer meetings in Christian

homes and talk about the prayer concerns of IEM.

Now that we have retired from IEM, please uphold us as we continue to serve the

Lord faithfully.

Women’s Retreat

We invited women from our village for

the Women’s Retreat on July 29, 2011.

Fifteen women responded. The

programme began at 3 pm with a seasonof prayer. Then, the women enthusiastically

joined in a time of singing.

We screened the film, “Good News.”Then we explained that women are of

great worth. Their roles as wives and

mothers can influence their children’s

future. They enjoyed the programme

and requested us to conduct suchprogrammes regularly.

The feedback was encouraging! Some

felt, “Why don’t you arrange suchprogrammes for our husbands as well?”

Pray that these women will impact

other women in their village for the

glory of God.

Miracle House!

Two months ago we were searching for

a house. The only one available was too

expensive.

Finally, we got a 2-room house and we

moved in. We converted one room into

our kitchen and the other into our

bedroom. We stayed in that house for

two months. After 2 months, a mancame seeking our help.

He turned out to be an ex-army man

whose house and relatives were inNepal. He said that only he and his son

were left and there was nobody to look

after their house and belongings in

Chandmari. He mentioned that we

Christians were known to be faithful so

He asked us if we could stay in hishouse for 2 years. His house has 3

rooms and a kitchen. He said we could

pay him a monthly rent. What a

wonderful experience for us!

Sixty-eight children from two locations

attended the VBS programme at

Ghattuwala and Nayagaon. Forty-eight

from the junior and primary groups

participated in the Bible recitation

competition. The Scripture portions weselected were Matthew 19:4, John 14:6,

2 Corinthians 5:17, Genesis 1:1,

Ephesians 6:1, Matthew 6:33 and

Matthew 5:14. The most exciting

moment was when all the competitors

recited the Bible chapters and versesand gained understanding and

knowledge of Jesus’ life and ministry

which we taught them from the VBS

A believer, Mr. Suresh Mahali was

threatened by their clan. They said that

if his family worshipped the Christian

God and went to church for prayer, they

would chase them from the village, and

not help them during their sicknesses.

They would not give them a burial place

Deliverance from

Dimapati village was possessed by an

evil spirit since January 2011. It

threatened her everyday saying, “I’ll kill

your husband, 2 daughters and son who

are earning for the family. I will capture

your house and will be its owner.” Sitha

became mad. One day she even tried to

commit suicide but God saved her. She

had visited several witchdoctors people

in vain. Sitha stopped attending church,

and did not allow believers to enter her

home to pray for her. But they continued

praying for her in their own homes.

One day God opened the way for us to

enter her house and pray earnestly to

God. We asked her to recite verses with

us. Since then she has been freed from

the satanic attack. Now she goes to

church regularly and praises God.

Summer Ministry in Lahaul Valley

To the

Heights For

Ministry

I praise God for giving me the grace to

enter Lahaul- ”The Forbidden Land in

the Himalayas,” for the 16th year of my

missionary journey. I have contact with

families on the Great Himalayan Range,

at an elevation of 7,500 - 14,000 feet.

God enabled me to cover more than

4,100 kilometres on foot till now. The

visits to Lahaul are carried out in

summer every year from June through

September, when the 13,500 feet

Rohtang Pass is open to traffic after 6

months of severe winter and heavy

accumulation of snow and ice. For the

rest of the year, I am based in Kullu

where many Lahauli people are settled.

The Lord has given me 3 precious

colleagues -  Lalmuan Langel &

Ngaithianching from Manipur and

Pynshailang Iawphniaw from

Meghalaya. They too make visits along

with me to Lahaul. This year the road to

Lahaul was badly damaged and it took

14 - 16 hours to cover a distance of 155

kilometres. We spent the night in the

bus near Rohtang Pass at below zero

temperature, with little warm clothing.

But what a great and loving Father God

we have! HE kept us in HIS warmth and

total protection and led us into a

spacious situation of usefulness.

Our waiting on the Lord is not in vain.

We look to HIM in faith, to “the GOD

who gives life to the dead and calls

things that are not as though they

were”. Romans 4: 17.

The Gospel Spreads

By Word and Deed!

On the September 15, 2010 we began

tailoring classes at Digod village. Two

girls, Chandrakala and Sonu were the

first trainees. Now, both of them have

grown in the Lord.

After some singing, we have a short

Bible study and prayer. Then tailoring

classes begin. More recently, Premlatha

has joined them. All 3 have renounced

idolatry and are now believing in and

praying to the living God. This was in

answer to prayer.

Sister Sonu led her sisters to the Lord.

One of them, Gayatri was troubled by

an evil spirit. In answer to prayer, she

was delivered. So she abandoned

idolatry and began worshipping the

living God. Another sister, Sheela was

barren for 7 years. We shared the

Gospel with her and gave her a Bible.

She began to believe in the Lord and He

blessed her with a baby girl on July 26,

2011. She is very strong in the Lord. She

led another sister, Madhu to the Lord.

Madhu left idolatry and began to read

the Bible. Her younger sister Laxmi is

growing in the Lord. Please uphold

Sonu’s family in your prayers.

Sister Premlatha led her sister-in-law to

the Lord. Her sister-in-law’s son has

been sick since birth and they spent

much money on his treatment. God

healed him in answer to prayer. Now

they have Bible study and prayer in

their home daily. They watch Bible

story programmes and are growing in

the Lord.

On July 26, 2011, we began to conduct

Bible classes for youth. Please pray for

Premlatha, Laxmi, Deepu, Santhosh and

Raju who are attending. Please pray

that they will grow spiritually. We also

plan to restart tailoring classes from

September this year. We expect 4 girls

to teach tailoring. Pray for Digod and

the surrounding villages, Mondala,

Devapura and Nimoda that God would

open doors there.

When we celebrated our first Christmas

in Digod village of Hadothi field in

2009, about 80 people had gathered.

When we celebrated it the second time

in 2010, about 50 or 60 people came.

Some people came from Patepura

village as well. For Christmas, 2011,

we plan to have skits and so on. We

expect Premlatha, Sonu and Sheela to

openly confess their faith in the Lord.

Please also pray for Mohan who has

recently begun attending Bible classes

that the Lord would touch him.
