How can we personally know the Father and his Son, our Lord Jesus Christ? It is the Holy Spirit who reveals the Father and the Son to us and who gives us the gift of faith to know and understand the truth of God's word. Through the Holy Spirit, we proclaim our ancient faith in the saving death and resurrection of Jesus Christ until he comes again. The Lord gives us his Holy Spirit as our divine Teacher and Helper that we may grow in the knowledge and wisdom of God. Do you seek the wisdom that comes from above and do you willingly obey God's word?

THE PASTOR’S LETTER Father John Gabriel

Dear Parish Family,

This is the Pope's Morning Homily from May 26, 2015 which I thought was important for all of us to hear:

Only Through Service Can One Follow Christ

It is sad to see a Christian who wants both Jesus and worldly gain. According to Vatican Radio, the Holy Father reflected on today's Gospel from St. Mark, in which Peter says to Jesus that he and the disciples "have given up everything and followed you.”

Regarding Christ's response, the Pope noted that He did not respond with promises of wealth, but rather of an inheritance that, however, comes "with persecution."

A Christian who is attached to material goods, he said, "gives a bad impression of a Christian who wants to have two things: heaven and earth."

"And the touchstone, precisely, is what Jesus says: the cross, persecution. This means to deny one's self, to endure the cross every day," he said. "The disciples had this temptation, to follow Jesus but then what will be the end of this good business? We think of the mother of James and John, when she asked Jesus for a place for her sons: 'Ah, this one he will make his Prime Minister, this one the Finance Minister…,' and took a worldly interest in following Jesus."

The Jesuit Pope went on to say that the heart of the disciples was slowly purified from this worldliness until Pentecost, where they understood that the love and salvation given to them freely must also be freely given by them.

"When you want to go both with Jesus and the world, with both poverty and wealth, this is a 'half-way' Christianity that wants material gain. It is the spirit of worldliness," the Pope said.

Taking the Last Place

Pope Francis continued his homily, saying that only through serving others can one truly follow Jesus. If one is given the opportunity of being first, he explained, he "should act like the last in service."

"And if the Lord gives you the opportunity to have goods, you should act in service, that is, for the others," he said. "There are three things, three steps that take us away from Jesus: riches, vanity and believing you are important. And if you believe you are important, it goes to your head and you are lost."

The 78 year old Pontiff called on the faithful to pray in order to understand well this path: the science of service, humility, and "of being the last one to serve the brothers and sisters in the Church."

Concluding his homily, Pope Francis warned the faithful of the "counter-witness" that draws people away from Christ.

"It is sad to see a Christian, whether a layperson, consecrated, priest, bishop; it is sad when you can see that they want two things: to follow Jesus and [material] goods, to follow Jesus and worldliness," he said.

"Let us continue now this celebration of the Eucharist, thinking on Peter's question. 'We have left everything: how will you pay us?', and thinking on Jesus' answer. The price that He will give us is the resemblance to Him. This will be the 'payment'. A great 'payment: that we resemble Jesus!"

In His Love,

~ Fr. John

The outpour of support and donations this past week has been truly humbling. God bless your generosity! While the donations are coming in, there is still much planning and organizing to be done! It takes many hands to make our guests feel welcome. Most of the families staying with us do have children but we will not know the ages/needs until a week before they arrive so we have establish a petty cash fund for those last minute shopping needs. We can use Shoprite gift cards as well as monetary donations. Please make your check payable to St. James Church and in the memo, write “Family Promise” and address your envelope to the attention of Nancy Caputo, you can bring your donation to the rectory or Religious Ed Office. We especially need two adults (preferably one a male) every evening to spend the night. The Religious Education Classroom will be transformed into your own (air-conditioned) personal sleeping quarters, what a wonderful experience this can be for your entire family! It is easy to volunteer! Go to: www.signupgenius.com

Search By Email: [email protected]

Chose the date and volunteer slot you want, hit the “submit and sign up” button and you are done! You will be asked to enter your email address and will receive a reminder email two days prior to your volunteer date. All parishioners are invited to bring their lawn chairs and join us in the parking lot to watch the fireworks!

All onsite volunteers will need to attend a brief training session on Tuesday, June 16 at 7:00PM in Hatcher Hall.

PARISH SCHOOL NEWS

Mrs. Patricia Dolansky Principal

The high school enrollment decisions are made, the fi-nals and projects are wrapped up for the eighth graders, and it’s time they turn into graduates. This week is a long goodbye of sorts. The Class of 2015 is reviewing topics they will encounter in high school, and preparing for Graduation. Tuesday evening our almost graduates will enjoy a dinner dance at Galloping Hill Caterers, cel-ebrating their achievement together. The big day itself is Friday, June 5th. Surrounded by the entire school com-munity and their families, the graduates begin the day with the Baccalaureate Liturgy celebrated in Church at 8:30am. They’ll sing the school Alma Mater and take part in the simple yet moving, “Pass it On”, ceremony. At the end of the mass, the eighth graders ring the steps of the Altar, where the seventh graders join them. Un-der the direction of Mrs. Dolansky and their teacher, Mrs. Tupper, the 8th grade lights their candles and passes on the flame, representing the spirit of the school, to the waiting seventh graders, confirming that these students now wear the mantel of Saint James School, and are stepping into leadership of the school community. Im-mediately after the Baccalaureate Liturgy, the graduating students and their guests will head over to Sophia’s Res-taurant for a celebratory breakfast, the gift of the Home School Association, to recognize their families’ enduring support of our school. The Graduation Ceremony fol-lows that evening at 6:30 pm in the church, with our graduates taking their places as the Class of 2015 and the newest members of our Alumni Association! Please join us in celebrating our graduates! If you are interested in enrolling your child(ren) for the Fall school year please call the School Office
