PDS Overview● NASA’s Planetary Data System (PDS) is a distributed archive that hosts and serves data

collected by robotic missions to targets in the solar system as well as ground-based support observations.

● The PDS is an active archive that makes well-documented, peer-reviewed data available to the community.

● The data adhere to rigorous standards for data archiving formats and documentation, ensuring that they will be readable, understandable, and usable for future generations of researchers.

● The PDS is comprised of 6 science discipline nodes and two support nodes, providing the archives with discipline-specific expertise.

Cassini Pages

● Early in the mission users complained that the data were not accessible and difficult to use. This led to funding the teams to develop instrument user’s guides that are now available on instrument help pages.

● Near the end of the mission, the JPL Cassini management committed themselves to thoroughly documenting the mission, working with R. Beebe (ATM) and J. Mafi (PPI) to develop web pages that defined the mission.

● PDS datasets are mission/instrument oriented. The Cassini tour was complex and discipline oriented. Discipline working groups that were established early in the mission were utilized to summarize the mission and create discipline web pages.

● The result is a set of detailed discipline and instrument pages. Team members are still adding components and derived data sets will be added to both discipline and instrument pages.

● PDS is working to migrate the data to PDS4 and web page material will be included in Cassini collections and bundles.

Outer Planets Unified Search (OPUS) at the RMS Node

● Not just for ring data!!!

● Search for data based on general geometric constraints such as: latitude range, longitude range, phase angle, incidence angle, spatial resolution, etc.

● OPUS search results include un-targeted bodies within the field of view.● Data sets:

○ Cassini ISS (raw and calibrated), VIMS, UVIS, some CIRS○ Voyager ISS (raw and calibrated)○ New Horizons LORRI and MVIC (Jupiter and Pluto)○ Galileo SSI○ Selected Hubble WFPC2, ACS, NICMOS, STIS, WFC3

Status of Juno Data

● Data deliveries have been on time with the exception of FGM perijove data and JIRAM data

● FGM struggled with calibration but has reached a solution that, with considerable effort, allows them to process the data. The instrument team has agreed to a sequence of deliveries that will bring their deliveries up to date by July 2020.

● JIRAM encountered navigation difficulties, which delayed deliveries. They too are committed to accelerate their data delivery schedule to become up to date by July 2020.

● PDS Data Release Calendar: https://pds.nasa.gov/datasearch/subscription-service/data-release-calendar.shtml

PDS4

● PDS4 is the new PDS, an integrated data system to improve data access and discoverability

● PDS4 standards are now required for all missions (e.g., used by LADEE, MAVEN, OSIRIS-REx) and derived data providers

● Improves efficiency of both ingestion and distribution of data

○ Uses Extensible Markup Language (XML) labels and standard data format templates

○ Self-consistent information model & software system

Working with Derived Data Providers

● 2014: first PDART solicitation; release of NASA Plan for Increasing Access to the Results of Scientific Research

● 2015: first ROSES requirement of Data Management Plan

● Today: providers of derived data receive funding from PDART, CDAP, DDAP, MDAP, LDAP, SSO, SSW, etc., plus unsolicited or encouraged submissions of derived data

Working with Derived Data Providers

Main take-away points:

● Working with providers of derived data is now a major activity of all PDS nodes (in addition to mission work).

● We have a streamlined system for those who want to archive their data with us.

● There are a lot of outer-planets RELATED data that are being ingested into the PDS.

Page 18: Outer Planets Data in the PDS - Lunar and Planetary Institute · OPAG Presentation, February 3, 2020 Outer Planets Data in the PDS. Nancy Chanover, NMSU. PDS Atmospheres Node. OPAG

OPAG Presentation, February 3, 2020

Requesting PDS Assistance● The PDS will work with data proposers (who eventually become data providers) to

○ develop a plan for what to archive, how, and when○ create the archive products○ undergo the peer review process○ release the data to the public

● This is true for proposers to NASA R&A programs as well as mission proposers.

● PDS staff can provide feedback on proposers’ Data Management Plans, and can provide letters of support to confirm that the proposed archiving plans are appropriate.

● Early contact with the relevant node(s) is encouraged; at least one week ahead of proposal deadlines is required!

PDS Meeting Presence● The PDS has a booth at all major planetary science conferences, where we offer

○ training (small class environment)○ informational brochures and flyers○ one-on-one help (e.g. with finding and/or archiving data)○ fun activities to engage prospective users (e.g. data scavenger hunt)

● Conferences we usually attend:○ AAS Division for Planetary Sciences○ Lunar and Planetary Science Conference○ American Geophysical Union

● Plus occasional international meetings and more specialized conferences (e.g. Planetary Data Workshop)
