• Prepare surface as outlined in general spray paint instructions on pages 12 – 13.• Remove the legs and mask off the areas that attach to the rest of the table. Spray paint with Textured Khaki, following directions on the can. Set aside to dry and carefully remove masking materials when dry to touch.• Mask off the tops of the tables and corners where legs attach. Spray paint sides of tables with Satin Brick. Use paint in a well-ventilated area and protect your work surface from overspray with a drop cloth or newspaper. To create your own spray booth, turn a large card-board box on its side and place objects inside when spraying. Use masking tape to cover any areas of the project that you do not want painted.

For best results, do not spray in humid conditions. Painting on a hot, humid day (over 80° F) and in direct sunlight can cause the paint to dry too quickly and pro-duce a dull, uneven finish. For the best finish, paint in the shade on days when the humidity is low.

The key to any paint project is surface preparation. If you start with a smooth, clean surface, you will get very good results. Don’t try to cut corners and save time by not sanding wood or removing dirt. To remove dirt, ordinary household detergent or mineral spirits usually do the job. Make sure surface is thoroughly dry before starting to paint or prime. Always use a basecoat or primer on bare wood, or when dramati-cally changing color.

When working with woodSand smooth with medium to fine grain sandpaper. Wipe clean with a tack cloth to remove dust. Spray with any Krylon® primer or a basecoat of Satin Cloud to hide wood grain if desired.

When working with metalRemove loose rust with a wire brush, sandpaper or chemical rust remover. Remove oil with a degreaser or denatured alcohol. With Outdoor Spaces™ paints & finishes, a primer is not necessary on metal because the paint provides maximum protection against rust & corrosion.

When working with glass or ceramicLightly sand with fine grain sandpaper so that surface will not be slick - this allows paint to adhere better. Wipe clean.

Shake the can for two full minutes once you hear the mixing ball begin to rattle. Repeat for 10 seconds after each minute of use.

It’s a good idea to test your spraying techniques on a piece of scrap material before beginning a project. Test a small area for compatibility by spraying the paint on an inconspicuous part of the project to evaluate the finish.

For solid coverage, spray across your project in a sweeping motion. Repeat, overlapping the paint by approximately one third. Keep a constant distance from the item being painted (refer to the product directions for the distance specified). Always begin and finish spraying off of your project, releasing the spray button at the end of each pass.

Take your time. Use several (2-3) light coats instead of one thick coat, which may result in runs and drips. Check directions & be aware of recoat windows, which indicate when additional coats can be applied. This information appears in the product directions on the paint can.

Before you start, ask yourself several questions:

The Big Picture What type of house do you live in? Do you want your outdoor space to be consistent with the style of your home?

House styles each have their own unique characteristics, which may affect your decorating decision. However, remember, this is your outdoor space, and if you want to create a “coastal hideaway” at your colonial in the Midwest or a “garden oasis” in the middle of the desert, then, by all means, do it!

The Internet is filled with ideas for every house style. Try your favorite search engine, as well as popular web sites of home magazines and television programs, to find ideas that you like. Bookmark the ideas you like, and when you narrow your ideas down, print them and keep in a binder for your reference. This is a great tool to take with you when shopping for supplies & accessories.

Are you inspired by a particular piece of furniture or acces-sory that you’d like to use in your outdoor makeover? One fabulous piece can be a springboard for an entire outdoor color scheme. – Kathy Peterson

What decorating styles do you like?

The decorating style you like will affect the accessories you choose, and could also affect the furniture. However, by choosing basic furniture that has little ornamen-tation, you can make it fit the style you want by changing the color and texture with Krylon® Outdoor Spaces™ spray paint, and adding accessories to match. If your style changes, you can easily update your existing furniture.

There are advantages to choosing a decorating style that complements your home’s interior. First, you may find that you have items inside that can easily be moved outside, which can save money. Additionally, your indoor decorating will blend seamlessly with your outdoor decorating, making your home feel larger.

How do you want to use your outdoor space?

Will this be your place to relax? Do you want to cook meals and enjoy din-ner outdoors? How many people do you want to entertain? Will you need room for children to play? Would you like to have music outdoors? Will you have a garden? Will you need room for a pool or hot tub? What areas need to be clear for walking? Define all the ways you’d like to use your outdoor space before you begin filling it with things. You will not only make the most of your budget, but you’ll be happier with the outcome.

Decide what’s most important, as well as what you could add at a later time. If your dreams are big, you may want to put a three or five-year plan together now, so that you have no surprises in later years that end up costing more.

The Basics Do you prefer shade, sun or partial shade?

In most outdoor areas, it’s desirable to have a mixture of sun and shade. However, you might prefer all sun or all shade instead. To create shade where there is none, large trees can help make the summer heat bear-able, but mature plants can be quite expensive.

One of the least expensive solutions, an umbrella, can be moved and tilted to block the sun where needed. Other alternatives include awnings, canopies, arbors and gazebos. Some of the new metal & canvas gazebos on the market are rather inexpensive, portable and easy-to-assemble. Retractable awnings provide shade when you want it, and sun when you don’t, although they can be pricey. There are less expensive do-it-yourself kits available, as well as instructions online for creating your own.

Another consideration in a sun-filled outdoor space is that UV light rays can fade the color of your furniture and accessories. Fabrics, like those on cushions, rugs, and umbrellas, usually show the first signs of fading. To maintain your investment, protect your fabrics with Krylon® Outdoor Spaces™ UV Fabric Protector every few months that they are exposed to the sun. Additionally, when painting furniture and accessories, be sure to choose a paint with UV inhibitors that will resist fading.

How much privacy would you like?

To help create the illusion of your own private getaway, you may want to block out reminders of the outside world, like neighbors and traffic. There are many ways to add privacy: room screens, hedges, potted plants, fencing, walls, trellises, arbors, pergolas and blinds. Room screens, outdoor blinds and potted plants offer movable, temporary privacy whenever needed. Walls, fences and structures offer a more permanent solution, and are often more expensive. However, depending on your home’s location, this could be money well spent.

Transplant overgrown plants and flowers in areas that are bare. If you’re not sure, ask an expert at your local garden center for recommendations for separating and transplanting plants. Also, be sure to leave sec-tions of the plants in their original space so the area doesn’t become bare. – Kathy Peterson

Where will you sit?

Family size and how often you entertain will determine how much and what type of seating you should have. If you plan to have meals outside, you’ll want seating that includes a table, like a dining set, bistro set or picnic table. For convenience, locate this dining area as close to the grill or kitchen as possible.

Seating can be a large part of your outdoor budget. To get more for your dollar, shop end of season clearance sales, outlet stores, thrift stores, flea markets and garage sales. Buy what you love – the pieces don’t have to match. You can tie everything together with Outdoor Spaces™ spray paints and finishes. And magically, the metal bench and wood chairs will become a coordinating set, just like in the photos on pages 4 – 11.

Make a shopping list and take a calculator when you go shopping to help you stay on budget. Carry a tape measure with you to make sure you don’t bring home accessories or furniture that are too big for your space. – Kathy Peterson

Will you use your outdoor space at night?

Lighting should be considered for evening safety. Candles add ambiance quickly and inexpensively. Choosing citronella candles will do double-duty by keeping the bugs away. You can also use candles for path light-ing to help you and your guests navigate through your outdoor space after dark. Other options include low voltage lighting that is simple to install, and solar options that are even easier. If you’re building a deck, consider adding inexpensive lights to the steps and around the perimeter. By adding a timer, you can ensure that your lights automatically come on after the sun goes down.

New lighting options include outdoor lamps that look like they belong in your living room, but have wiring that stands up to the elements. Be sure your lamp has a weighted base to keep it upright in windy weather. Some outdoor lamps are available battery powered, in case electrical outlets are not available.

For parties and other events, there are many types of lighting to create a festive mood. Don’t put away those holiday lights! White Christmas lights are lovely outdoors all year long, and add a magical touch to any event. Tropical tiki torches aren’t just for luaus, and are now available in a variety of styles and materials to suit any décor. Colorful paper lanterns and plastic

string lights add whimsical fun. These inexpensive lights are available in designs for any occasion.

To add a fiery glow outdoors, consider a fireplace to light up the night. There are numerous permanent and portable options to choose from, both gas-powered and wood-burning. Outdoor fireplaces help to create a warm, comfortable mood, and can extend your outdoor season, mak-ing chilly evenings the perfect temperature. Charming chimineas can be found in clay or more durable iron. A simple fire pit and other out-door fireplaces will also allow you to grill over it. To enjoy your outdoor fireplace to the fullest, don’t forget the pie irons and the roasting sticks for hot dogs & marshmallows! Who’s ready for S’mores?

What do you see, hear and smell?

Even if your home doesn’t overlook the waterfront or have an amaz-ing view, you can design your space in such a way that you can gaze at something you love – your rose garden, a waterfall, the bird bath with all your feathered friends, or the swing set where your children play. You can create your own paradise wherever you are.

If you are listening to traffic or the neighbor’s ringing phone, it will be challenging to truly get away from it all in your outdoor space. To help mask unwanted sounds, you can add wind chimes, a fountain or water fall, or outdoor speakers for music. If the thought of wiring speakers outdoors is too overwhelming, then you’ll be happy to know that there are wire-less outdoor speakers available that utilize your indoor stereo system to pipe your favorite music outside. Play a CD of the ocean waves crashing to mentally transport yourself to a tropical destination.

If you are hearing pesky mosquitoes or bees buzzing, it’s time for some pest control. Screen in a gazebo or porch, add some citronella candles, use a fogger before a party, or plant some black cohosh, which acts as a natural bug repellent. Check your landscape regularly for bee and wasp nests to head off insects before they become a real problem.

And to complete your sensory experience, don’t forget fragrant flowers. Choose plants with scents that you love and plant them closely to sitting areas. Summer is also an ideal time to bring potted indoor plants outside to bask in the sun.

The Accessories This is where you can do a lot on a limited budget. Start with what you already have and then add inexpensive bargains that you discover at outlet stores, thrift shops, flea markets, and garage sales. Splurge on those items you can’t live without. Use interesting containers to hold plants. Combine mismatched items to create tables and seating.

Following these simple guidelines will help to ensure a successful finished project:

• A clean, dry surface is important. Ordinary household detergent or mineral spirits usually does the job. Be sure to sand or scrape if necessary, and use a primer whenever possible. Rusted, glossy or hard surfaces should be sanded to improve adhesion.• Use aerosol paints and coatings in good weather, ideally when temperatures are 55-75°F, and there is 40-60% relative humidity.
