Hand-hooked rugs are made using a hand-operated tool to punch strands of U-shaped fibers into a canvas stretched on a frame, creating a looped pile. The height of the pile will vary according to the density and size of the loops.

hOw tO ideNtiFY: A latex backing is attached to the back of hand-hooked rugs to hold the yarns together. The surface pile will appear rounded.

Outdoor rugs are made solely of synthetic fibers—including olefin, polyester, polypropylene and PVC—that have been infused with UV inhibitors to minimize fading. While these rugs are mold- and mildew-resistant and able to withstand many hours of direct sunlight, they should not be left in direct sun or standing water, as this will significantly limit rug life.

Outdoor rugs can be hand-hooked, hand-woven, braided or machine-made. Hand-hooked, hand-tufted and machine-made constructions typically have a latex backing, which provides additional protection against the elements. Because they are constructed of synthetic fibers, outdoor rugs don’t shed and are highly durable. With proper care, an outdoor rug can last several years for outdoor use and even longer for indoor use.

Machine-made rugs are produced by large machines with hundreds of spindles of fiber that are mechanically woven into a thin mesh backing. A computer dictates the pattern, creating a consistent appearance from rug to rug.

Hand-woven rugs (often referred to as flatweaves) are woven on a loom and are known for being lightweight and easy to handle. In most cases, the pattern on the front of the rug can be viewed clearly from both sides, making these rugs reversible.

hOw tO ideNtiFY: Flatweave rugs do not have a raised pile, giving them their “flat” appearance when compared to other rug constructions. The design of a flatweave rug typically appears the same on the front as on the back.

ABOUT RUG COLORWhile the Surya catalog and website provide an excellent guide for evaluating a rug’s design and general appearance, samples provide the best way to accurately evaluate color. Following are some things to keep in mind when evaluating rug color.

It is important to convey to consumers that handmade outdoor rugs are made by artisans and are one-of-a-kind pieces. As such, they may have subtle color variations due to the inherent characteristics of natural fibers and dyes. If a customer is looking for an exact color match, machine- made rugs are typically more uniform from rug to rug.

Surya uses the Pantone® TPX color guide when assigning colors to its products. Pantone TPX colors provide a standard “language” that is understood by designers around the world, helping to ensure consistency and accuracy when referring to color.

TIPS TO ENSURE PROPER SIZE SELECTIONOne of the most common reasons that rugs are returned is improper size selection. Choosing the correct rug size is essential to filling a space properly and making the rug look the best it can within a particular living area. It is important to note that appropriate rug size should be determined based on furniture configuration and not on room size alone.

pOrch/patiO #2Tuck the rug under the front legs of the sofa. The back legs of the sofa can be situated on or off of the rug, depending on personal preference. We suggest a rug that is 8' x 10' or larger. The rule of thumb is to leave 18" to 24" between the wall and rug, creating a border of exposed floor that frames the furniture arrangement—equal on all four sides, if possible.

pOrch/patiO #3Select a room-sized rug that allows the furniture to “float” in the center. We recommend a rug that is 10' x 13' or larger. Leave 12" to 18" of exposed floor to create a border around the rug—equal on all four sides, if possible.

If possible, leave a few inches of exposed floor between the rug and sofa to accent the furniture. OutdOOr diNiNgSelect a room-sized rug that allows enough space for all chair legs to remain on the rug when the chairs are comfortably pulled away from the table. We recommend a rug that is 8' x 10' or larger.

COMMON RUG CHARACTERISTICSAll of Surya’s outdoor rugs are handmade by skilled artisans, or in a specialty manufacturing facility, and are checked to ensure that they meet quality standards prior to shipment.

We stand behind our products 100 percent and will always accept the return of defective merchandise. However, to avoid unnecessary returns, there are common issues inherent in our products that need to be explained to consumers when they are purchasing a rug. The issues below are not considered defects and, therefore, are not valid reasons for returning a product.

cOlOrNo two handmade outdoor rugs are the same, which is part of their intrinsic appeal. Slight color variations are not uncommon for handmade rugs, as dye lots may change over a period of time. For the same reason, a rug’s color can vary slightly from the color of the sample since the sample was created at an earlier time. See page 16—about rug color—for additional rug color considerations.

creasesIf a rug has been rolled or folded for shipping, it may have creases. Creases should disappear within a week or two when the rug is laid out flat. Reverse rolling the rug overnight with the pile to the outside will help to expedite crease removal.

OdOrRugs recently removed from a bag may have an odor. Odors are caused by dyes, yarns and shipping for long distances in sealed wrap. Most odors dissipate within a week once the rug is removed from the shipping wrap.

FadiNgOutdoor rugs are typically UV stabilized to help resist fading. It’s important to note, however, that repeated exposure to direct sunlight will fade rug colors over time. To optimize rug life and minimize fading, outdoor rugs should not be placed in direct sunlight, if possible.

wearWhile outdoor rugs are designed to be highly durable, they should be rotated every few months to evenly distribute wear and extend rug life. Adding a rug pad underneath the rug will also help to reduce wear and tear.

sprOutsLoose fibers that extend from the top of the rug, or “sprouts,” may occur in outdoor rugs with hand-tufted accents. To remove sprouts, use a small pair of scissors to snip them off even with the rug pile. Never pull out loose fibers, as this can leave a gap in the rug.

CARE AND MAINTENANCE Of OUTDOOR AREA RUGSArea rugs are one of the easiest ways to freshen the look, color and style of an outdoor living space. Designed to dry quickly, resist fading and clean easily, outdoor rugs generally require little maintenance. However, general care is advised to keep these rugs looking their best. Following are tips for extending the life of an outdoor rug.

Regularly shake out the rug to remove dust and dirt that may have accumulated. Brooms and manual sweepers are also an effective way to clean outdoor rugs.

Clean the rug monthly. Mix a solution of dish soap and lukewarm water in a bucket. Gently scrub the rug using a largenylon brush, making sure to clean both sides of the rug. Rinse the rug with a hose—preferably on a sloped surface such as a driveway to enable the water to easily drain away.

Dry the rug in sunlight to prevent mold. Hang the rug over a porch railing in the sunlight or lay the rug out in the sun, making sure to flip it over to ensure that both sides dry thoroughly.

Should a spill occur, blot it with a dry cotton cloth as quickly as possible to prevent a stain from setting in. Make sure to wipe underneath the rug as well. If necessary, use a mixture of dish soap and lukewarm water to remove the remainder of the spill and then allow the area to dry.

Never let the rug sit in standing water. Outdoor area rugs should be placed in a covered space or in an area where there is good runoff. If an outdoor rug is retaining water, hang it over a railing or lay it in the sun until it is completely dry.

haNd-wOveN: Textures and patterns are created by weaving different yarns through a vertical warp. A hand-woven construction typically has no pile and is reversible.

machiNe-made: These rugs are constructed on large automated looms. The designs are created by lifting the weft yarns to the surface to create pattern, which will be uniform from rug to rug.

Braided: Fibers are braided together to create bands of solid colored or variegated yarn, which are then sewn together to create the rug.

pile NO pile: The face of the rug has no vertical pile and the fibers lay horizontally due to the how the rug is constructed.

medium pile: The pile height ranges from ¼ inch to ¾ inch.

plush high / lOw pile: The surface of the rug combines high pile areas and low pile areas for an all-over dimensional effect.

perFOrmaNceeasY care: A rug that is stain-resistant and easy to clean, and that will show minimal wear and tear with high foot traffic.

NO sheddiNg: A rug that will not shed with normal foot traffic/wear and tear since fibers remain intact.

OutdOOr saFe: A rug that is mildew- and mold-resistant, fade-resistant and easy to clean. Can be used on porches and patios, in kitchens, kids’ rooms and high traffic areas. Polypropylene, PVC (polyvinyl chloride) and Olefin are some common examples of outdoor-safe fibers.

NOTE: “Outdoor safe” can also apply to pillows and poufs, as well as lamps and art that have been specially treated to make them weather resistant.

FriNge detail: The loose warp threads that extend beyond the end of the rug.

lOOp teXture: The pile of the rug is comprised of small loops of yarn to add an interesting surface texture.

recYcled materials: Some or all fibers in the rug are made from recycled materials, such as PET (polyethylene terephthalate) or PVC (polyvinyl chloride).

reversiBle: Reversible rugs can be used with either side of the rug facing up since both sides of the rug are finished and functional. These rugs typically have no pile.

PILLOW AND POUf RELATED TERMSpipiNg: A form of trim consisting of a strip of fabric folded over a cord-like shape and inserted into the seam to define edges. It may be made from either self-fabric (same fabric as the pillow, pouf, etc.) or contrasting material.

digitallY priNted: Digital textile printing is an ink jet-based method of printing colorants onto fabric.

materialssuNBrella: Sunbrella® fabrics are 100% solution-dyed acrylic fabrics that are water, fade, mold, mildew and stain resistant.

OleFiN: A synthetic fiber made from a polyolefin. Olefin is strong, resistant to stains and mildew, and exhibits excellent colorfastness.

pOlYester: A polymer fiber that is resilient, quick-drying and stain-resistant/easy to care for.

pOlYprOpYleNe: A lightweight fiber that is extruded. Often used in outdoor safe rugs and accessories.

pvc: PVC stands for polyvinyl chloride, a plastic fiber that is sometimes made from recycled plastics. Most PVC products are outdoor safe.
