Supervision

Parental supervision of children— Columbia Association lifeguards are on duty to enforce rules and regulations and respond to emergencies. There is no substitution for close, active parental supervision.Unsupervised children’s policy— All children ages 9 or younger must beaccompanied by a supervisor. Supervisors must follow this policy: You are visiting only to watch the children. You may watch no more than 10 children, including no more than four children ages 9 or younger. Non-swimming children must be accompanied in the main pool on a one-to-one ratio.Safety First — The Safety First test, given during Adult Swim, includes swimmingtwo lengths of the pool continuously in a strong fashion and treading water forone minute. Successful passage is noted on the member’s account.Behavior — Pool privileges will be suspended for unsupervised children and teens (10 to 19 years old) who are asked to leave due to behavioral issues. A primary member must then accompany the child for the duration of a visit to any of the CA pools for one year from the date of the infraction.

6 CA Outdoor Pools 2019 • ColumbiaAssociation.org/pools

Macgill’s Common Pool is an AutismSensory Pool.

The Howard County Autism Society will inform CA of children with autism who have stop/startissues, which will be noted on the swimmer's CA membership. This will allow the child to remainin the pool during adult-only times with a parent or guardian on a one-to-one ratio. To qualify, please contact the Howard County Autism Society at 410-290-3466 or [email protected]. Once your child’s membership has been updated, please speak to a lifeguard when visiting Macgill’s Common Pool.

CA Outdoor Pool Policies1. Anyone wishing to enter water deeper than the level of their shoulders must be able to swim one length of the pool while remaining in a horizontal position without stopping or touching the sides or the bottom of the pool.

2. Protect our water • Take a cleansing shower before entering the pool and after using the toilet. • All bathers who are not toilet-trained are required to wear a tight-fitting swim diaper. • Disposable or cotton diapers are not permitted in the pool. • Anyone who has diarrhea or has had diarrhea in the last two weeks should not use the pool.3. Adults have priority on lounge furniture.4. At a quarter of every hour, there will be a 15-minute break (adult swim), at which time all children younger than 16 years of age will be required to clear the pool. One child 6 years or younger may accompany an adult into the pool during this time.5. To maintain a safe and family environment, revealing or see-through bathing suits, thongs, shorts with rivets, and clothing generally considered offensive will not be permitted.6. In consideration of others, personal amplified music or radios with external speakers will not be allowed.7. Illegal drugs and alcoholic beverages or persons under the influence will not be permitted in the pool or on its grounds.8. Food and drinks are permitted in the designated areas. Grilling is not permitted except at the charcoal grill at Talbott Springs Pool. You must bring your own charcoal and clean the grill after using it. Glass containers of any kind are not permitted.9. The outdoor pools are a smoke-free zone. Smoking is strictly prohibited inside the property and within 50 feet of the entrance gate.10. Dogs, cats or other pets are not permitted in the pool complex, except for service animals.11. Masks, fins and snorkels are only allowed in the lap lanes, provided they are being used appropriately.12. Pools with basketballs, volleyballs or other game equipment will require collateral for usage of CA pools property.

Volleyball court useThe sand volleyball courts at the outdoor pools are to be used only for volleyball or other similar games (nuke ’em). Their purpose is not to be used as a sandbox. Therefore, activities such as digging holes or building sand castles, etc., are not permitted. Digging in the sand ruins the court surface and base layer, which may cause injury to those playing volleyball.

Cameras (video and still)/camera phonesColumbia Association recognizes the desire for individuals to document activities with family and friends; however, this should not infringe on the right to privacy of others. Photographs or videos should not be taken of others without their permission. Cameras (video and still) have no reason to be in the locker rooms or bathhouses. Additionally, use of camera phones is prohibited while in these areas.

Pool Crowd LevelsDuring periods where staffing requirements exceed available resources, the following steps will be taken to ensure the safety of the facility users. • Notify incoming swimmers of overcrowding. • Extend adult swims to 20 minutes. • Close snack bar to free CA staff to guard. • Run two 10-minute adult swims. Children will not be allowed to swim with their parents during adult swims. • Close pool for 15 minutes every hour. • Close pool for 15 minutes, open for 30 minutes, then close again. • No additional admissions to the pool.

Camps, day cares, youth programs and private rentalsAll Columbia Association Aquatics facilities comply with state and county requirements for operating a swimming pool and comply with state requirements for camps. The facilities have been inspected, certified and approved by the Howard County Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. All CA lifeguards are trained in the Jeff Ellis International Pool and Waterpark Lifeguard Training Program and meet all the requirements set forth in their comprehensive risk management program.
