key lines of inquiry. First, they start by listening closely to each client so they can integrate their personal style and underlying tendencies into every element of the design. Are you a bold extrovert who loves to entertain? Are you more drawn to intimate, subtle details and secluded nooks? Everyone wants to welcome guests to their home in a way that expresses their taste and offers an intriguing first impression.Next, consider the experience of a newcomer arriving at a site for the first time. Clear way- finding is essential to a pleasant welcome. “We like to gently encourage visitors along a particular trajectory by weaving in a pattern of elements that build upon one another in a clear, inviting sequence,” says Moreau. A classic flagstone path with well-placed and seasonally-planted containers, or a trail marked by hand-carved stone spheres, can be equally effective in smoothly guiding guests to their destination. “Architecture and accessories are becoming increasingly

relevant where we need to limit plant selections to deer-resistant cultivars.”Underpinning the expression of the client and the experience of a guest, the third key consideration in the design process is the variability of the landscape itself. Every entrance is defined by a range of factors, from the amount of sun and quality of soil to the architectural statement and surrounding landscape of the home. “We always seek native or environmentally sustainable plants which offer year-round visual interest,” explains Moreau, a New York Botanical Gardens certified horticulturalist, “such as trees and shrubs with exceptional foliage and even bark. “Try to anchor vertical elements like the façade of the home or a flowering tree with playful walkways and exciting groundcovers.”

1. CONSIDER THE SPACEContainer plantings create the focal point that pulls your visitor’s eye toward the front entrance. Remember to consider the spatial relationship of your containers in proportion to where they are displayed. For example, wider, shorter container designs are perfect for the start of a walkway while taller and more narrow designs are better for closer in towards the door.

2. ACCENT AND COMPLEMENTRemember to consider your surroundings, now and in the near term future. Start by looking at the textures and colors of the existing foliage already in your yard. When planning out your containers, work to pull in complementary colors with a consistent accent color. For example, a brick home with a bluestone front walk-way would look fantastic with a burgundy grass for the tall center, a grey-blooming sedum, and a brighter accent color of your choosing. Be sure to repeat this color scheme in your containers leading to the front door (or back door).

3. INCORPORATE SURPRISING ELEMENTSSometimes the best container designs are those that use unusual elements to add character. While cabbage and mums are expected staples for the fall season, and greens and berries are the go-tos for winter, get a little creative! Try incorporating pods, pumpkins, logs, and twigs! The more unexpected, the better the “story” you create. Living shrubs, perennials, and props such as lanterns and lighted twigs, can go a long way in achieving a unique, fun look (that would set you apart from the neighbors) that will last until spring.

Thinking outside of the box is the foundation for creating inspiring and beautiful container plantings for the fall and winter seasons. In the space outside your containers there are critical success factors, including light conditions, the existing style of your home, and surrounding colors. A great planter serves as the perfect finishing touch, bring-ing the style and look together in a cohesive way.

Day 14 racks baby back ribs, approximately 4 to 6 pounds4 quarts water1 cup sea or kosher salt1 cup brown sugarRemove membrane from back side of each rack of ribs, pulling with a paper-towel in your hand to maintain a good grip. Combine brine ingredients in an 8-quart stainless steel stock pot or divide 1 quart water, 1/4 cup salt and 1/4 cup sugar in each of 4 heavy-duty 2-gallon zip-top freezer bags (this makes it easy to store the ribs in the refrigerator overnight). Add all four racks of ribs to stock pot or add one rack to each freezer bag. Push ribs down into brine, cover pot or seal bags and refrigerate overnight.

Day 21/4 cup freshly ground black pepper1/4 cup salt1/4 cup ground paprika1/4 cup brown sugar1 handful apple wood or hickory chunksWaterApple juice in a spray bottleYour favorite barbecue sauce, optionalRemove ribs from brine and pat dry with paper towels. Discard brine. Combine black pepper, salt, paprika and brown sugar in a bowl. Sprinkle 1/4 of rub over each rack, coating the front and back side of each rack well. Massage the rub in with your hands. Use wood chunks in grill for extra flavor.

Preheat grill to 200-220ºF. Drain wood chunks and sprinkle a few over the hot coals. Add ribs to the smoker, overlapping slightly. Smoke ribs for 3 to 4 hours, adding additional wood chunks after each hour and spritzing hourly with some of the apple juice. Brush with barbecue sauce, if desired, during the last 15 minutes of cooking.

T he morning sun offers its soft rays to glisten and dance on the pool’s surface. Relaxing on the lounge you glance over the rim of your sunglasses, beverage in

hand. A smile of satisfaction breaks out at the beauty of your new pool and stunning outdoor kitchen. The azure sky doesn’t dare interrupt your serenity – not a cloud. Now it’s hard to remember the overwhelming details the project entailed. Plans, codes, site evalu-ation, grading problems all became highly detailed forays into the unknown. You’ve come to realize one can only wish it was as easy as a pool man pointing and saying, “There’s a flat area to put the pool in.” Yet solution-illusion often occurs when it comes to landscape projects. We tend to override logic when our hearts are set on something. Consider: it’s one thing to purchase a tennis racquet. It’s quite anoth-er to think that qualifies you to play tennis. It’s not realistic! We can however, approach a pool, terrace or other structure with that same illusion. If only it were so!

It’s All About Scope This is where engineering behind the project and

design comes in. Yes, you read that correctly, engi-neering! The word conjures up bridges and power plants, but when an added structure covers ground surface, engineering applies. Although it may seem that way, adding a structure to a property is not a single item existing in a vacuum. Landscape struc-tures added to a property affect the rest of it in vari-

ous ways. For most homeowners this is not common knowledge. Codes, regulations, drainage and topog-raphy make interconnectivity a serious challenge, making project scope vital: understanding how the totality of a property is affected by adding surface structures. The sheer volume of details, and codes involved could overwhelm a home owner, and over-looking any key factor could halt a project. “Bring-ing a truly comprehensive view to the many compo-nents involved in a project is crucial. Nothing on the property is isolated. It’s imperative we address every single factor involved to achieve the client’s goals,” notes Brian Cossari, a landscape architect with Hoff-man Landscapes, Inc., out of Wilton, CT.

That’s where a landscape architect can make a sig-nificant difference in a project’s successful outcome. They live and breathe holistic, encompassing every detail related to the property and the proposed proj-ect. Homeowners are often shocked to find that the pool they want in a particular spot can’t work because the septic tank intersects the space or a well is located nearby. That’s when they recall their realtor telling them what a great spot that would make for a pool. The expertise of a landscape architect includes find-ing a balance between a client’s vision, codes govern-ing structures, and the inherent issues the property itself presents. The landscape architect also helps to avert problems that might otherwise go undetected until a project is underway which translates to bud-get and time overruns. Brian Cossari, a landscape architect with Hoffman Landscapes, Inc., highlights

the problems and deliver the vision.” By beginning with the end in mind the landscape architect assures a less stressful experience.

There May Be TradeoffsMost of us don’t think of a swimming pool as a surface struc-

ture because it’s in the ground. Not so! There are two overarching factors governing outdoor structures: pervious (allowing water to flow through) and impervious (stopping water from flowing through). In some towns only one quarter of a lot can remain impervious which directly affects landscape plans, and a trade-off can result if the structure goes over the allotted percentage. Here’s how it works. Let’s say you add a pool. If the surface coverage exceeds the impervious percentage, something else on the prop-erty must be removed. In some cases an asphalt driveway, a shed or other impervious structures must be removed to achieve code percentages.

An amazing amount of creativity, engineering, and thoughtfulness goes into a project to achieve the client’s vision while meeting codes (which are often at odds) and keeping the aesthetics of the design in tact. Work-ing with a landscape architect offers homeowners a partner who understands and applies the engineering aspect as an advantage. Engineering know-how can often overcome barriers that might otherwise thwart the intended design. Benefits do accrue in part-nering with a trusted, knowledgeable professional on your side. En-gineering expertise brings a project to fruition. And, after all, the landscape vision realized is the whole purpose for undertaking the project in the first place.

The Importance of a Building EnvelopeCodes governing structures on a property can be tricky to

navigate. To meet codes and their client’s vision, landscape architects must create a kind of symbiosis in the total proj-ect. To that end, knowledge of codes and workarounds must result in balanced interconnectivity. This again is where a landscape architect can be of tremendous value. Matthew Biron, a landscape architect with Hoffman Landscapes, Inc., puts it this way: “All our work begins with what we call a building envelope. This encompasses everything related to the project as a whole. Projects should begin with a feasi-bility study to determine what will be required to achieve the expected result without surprises. The study also reveals something critical – what the land itself is telling us.” The point here is that even if there is a flat space to accommo-date a pool and fire pit, or outdoor kitchen, there may be slopes in the property that affect run-off water, which might require an engineer’s review. Retaining walls or code compli-ant fencing may be required. With the study complete, next steps are conceptual drawings, client feedback, revisions, and approvals. “The design process is critical. Design drawings are a valued necessity because they are drawn from differ-ent sides of the property; then compared to determine that everything is going to fit. In other words, it’s all about pro-

Sprawling natural stone patios, shimmering pool areas, and beautiful outdoor kitchens are often best enjoyed in the company of good friends and close family. Just off the beaten path lies a secret garden getaway. A meandering path of Pennsylvania bluestone slabs—just as timeless as the earth they rest on—invite the eye and entice the mind with glimpses of what may lie just beyond. Outdoor garden rooms—or destination gardens—are essentially a series of connected, yet separate, spaces within a larger property. In the case of one masterfully developed and maintained property in NY, these spaces are indeed on a larger property.

grounds of this Westchester, NY residence to perfectly fit the lifestyle of its owners. Avid gardeners and outdoor enthusiasts, homeowners Steven and Marci McCormick collaboratively worked with Jason to create a series of stunning outdoor rooms.

Off the East side of the home, a few steps down from the home’s back patio and pool area, begins a lazy path. Surrounded by lush plantings of Hostas, Pachysandra, Ferns, and Myrtle that somehow seem that they’ve been there for 100 years, the path ends at a secluded circular patio. In the center of the irregular PA bluestone slabs, sits a natural stone fire pit, that when comple-mented by the perfectly curved seat wall of matching stature, creates a space worthy of marshmallow-roasting bliss.

A brief stroll away, amidst the vast green hillside, sits a concrete and wrought iron gazebo reminiscent of classic roman architecture. “Steven and Marci thought that the view from up there looking down on rest of the property was nice,” explains Gordon. “Then vice-versa, if you were looking up to the hill, the gazebo was something that caught your eye on the hillside.” The result is a secluded retreat that seems to transport its visitors to a time long ago.

the hill to what could very easily be a park bench in France, the Total Turf Landscaping team transformed an ordinary planting bed into yet another destination spot. Offering a stunning view of the setting sun beyond the tree line, the classically designed garden bench sits be-tween two flowering Crab Apple trees, warmly welcom-ing visitors as they motor up the driveway.

And then there’s the beautifully structured vegetable garden, blooming in all its Hudson Valley bounty at the very far end of the long drive. “We had nothing to do with his vegetable garden,” Gordon quickly interjects, “that’s all Steven,” he laughs.

Well, then, I guess this property really is an outdoor home.

Poolside OasisWith a new pool installed and dreams of extending their home beyond the

backdoor, these Orange County, NY homeowners commissioned Landworx of NY to design and install the backyard of their dreams.

Set back a good distance off a dreamy country road, secluded by mature forestry and well-planned privacy screenings, sits a beautifully designed poolside oasis. What was once a more modest—yet still very im-pressive—landscape with raised patios, walk-ways, and plantings just 7 years ago, has been completely reimagined to become the mas-terpiece that it is today. Leaving little more of the original backyard design than the children’s playground, Landworx of NY set out to create a cohesive landscape that inte-grated well with their client’s newly installed freeform pool.

When approaching a project of this scale and detail, the planning and engineering that’s necessary for success can be mind-blow-ing to the untrained eye. It can certainly be a very stressful time for homeowners, indeed. Fortunately for these Montgomery, NY res-idents, they were working with a contractor they knew they could trust. Armed with complete design freedom and the trust of their now repeat client, Pete Nilsestuen and the Landworx team attacked the project head on. “Danny is very laid back,” explains Pete. “He said just do your thing.” With no formal

design plans and a few cans of spray paint, Pete formed out the new design on the grass and rubble. After doing your “thing” in the Hudson Valley region for as long as Pete has, it makes that entire planning and engineering process look pretty easy.

The end result of the project lasting more than 3 ½ weeks in total is a perfectly designed, resort like experience a few steps down from the home’s sliding patio doors. One would never know that the now cohesive backyard landscape was completed at different stages over nearly a decade’s time—a feat of land-scape design magic to be admired. Forming the outdoor dining space conveniently lo-cated near the home’s kitchen, the curves of the upper level patio bob and weave in what seems to be perfect harmony with those of the pool. Located on this same level—yet set off a bit with the perfect vantage point to the children’s play area—is an outdoor fire pit with seat walls wrapping the far side’s edge.

One single, sweeping step down leads to the pool patio, which generously wraps all sides of the freeform swimming pool, and a custom pool house. Offering a lounge-style space for relaxing poolside, the pool house

features an outdoor wet bar, wall mounted flat screen, beautifully ap-pointed outdoor loungers, and an outdoor shower. The pool house floor—built using Unilock’s stain-resistant Belpasso paver—offers a non-slip surface perfect for poolside environments. The upper dining and fire pit area and the pool patio feature Unilock’s clean-lined Umbriano paver in various sizes. Adding incredible elegance and sophistication, Land-worx of NY installed a double border of Series 3000 and Il Campo pavers also from the Unilock product line.

A low-voltage landscape lighting system designed and installed by the Landworx team brings the outdoor space to life after the sun goes down. With solid bronze fixtures from Cast Lighting, the look and functionality of the lighting system extends the usability of the space while offering safety and security. The project was brought to it’s full potential with new plantings throughout, sod installation, and a complete irrigation system.

Born of spray paint, sweat, and imagination, this Orange County, NY poolside oasis is truly stunning to experience. A sense of calm rushes over as you enter the space and all at once you know that there’s nothing left to do but grab a drink and relax.
