OUTDOOR EDUCATION ADVISERS’ PANEL OUTDOOR LEARNING CARDS Inspirational outdoor learning activities that make a difference The Outdoor Learning Cards have been developed by the Outdoor Education Advisers’ Panel (OEAP) as a resource to support schools and other youth settings in the delivery of exciting and inspirational outdoor learning and adventurous activities. The Outdoor Learning Card activities contribute directly to a wide range of educational and developmental aims for young people and cover four elements of Outdoor and Adventurous Activities that can be delivered on the immediate school site and surrounding environment: Orienteering. Team Building and Problem Solving. Bouldering – Use of low level climbing walls. Journeying (Pre DofE) – Local visits organised by young people. The activities outlined in the 50 Outdoor Learning Cards are very much a means to an end and can the used to support a wide range of curriculum outcomes. There is a clear emphasis on team working, problem solving, creative thinking and effective participation, while also contributing to the development of personal learning and thinking skills. As individual activities they readily support the PE curriculum and along with the support material can be used to create a progressive scheme of work from key stage 1 - 4. However, the cards will also support the broader curriculum, such as maths, English, geography, PSHE and ICT. The Card activities can be developed by these subject areas to introduce concepts and help assess pupil understanding by applying such concepts in an outdoor setting. The supporting material for the cards, in the form of a handbook and CD, was developed alongside the QCDA and provides further resource material for staff to develop and integrate the cards in to their curriculum. In order that staff are aware of the full potential of this material the Cards can only be accessed through OEAP courses. For details of courses near to you please go to the OEAP training website www.oeaptraining.info or contact your Outdoor Education Adviser who can be found on www.oeap.info .
