FINDING THE
OF TOMORROW
LEADERSTODAY
In August we welcomed Jim Ryan, formerly the dean of the Harvard Graduate School of Education, as the 9th president of UVA. President Ryan, a first generation college student who graduated from the UVA School of Law and served on its faculty, begins his tenure alongside the most diverse first year class in the University’s history. The incoming class of 2022 set many enrollment records highlighted in this brochure. A few of our proudest highlights include: an increased yield and enrollment of African American and multi-race students, the second highest number of students who are first in their family to attend college, and the most ethnically diverse class in University history.
Our commitment to accessibility and affordability remains an institutional priority. We accept students solely on their academic merit and 100% of unmet financial needs is covered for all U.S. Students, including non-Virginia residents. Additionally, our Blue Ridge Scholars program provides additional assistance by reducing the loan component for incoming students with exceptional promise and financial need. Among major public universities, we have the highest graduation rate, the highest African-American graduation rate, and are a top university for producing successful entrepreneurs.
With an active mentorship program and a globalalumni network of over 220,000, our commitment to enduring and lifelong value spans continents and careers. In a recent Gallup survey of college graduates across the country, UVA alumni were well above the national average for employment, engagement at work, well-being, and attachment to their alma mater—with many reporting that the University prepared them well for post-college life.
We encourage you to explore our interactive student life video resource, Start Here(Virginia.edu/starthere). Through this site, the UVA experience comes to life. Your direction and guidance is essential to students navigating an increasingly confusing and complex college search process. If you have any thoughts, ideas, or suggestions on how we could better serve your community, please don’t hesitate to share them with me.
Best wishes for a great year,
