Maria DoyleKennedy

The Black BoxWednesday 2 January, 8.00pm

Not for nothing has Hot Press described Maria Doyle Kennedyas “the finest voice this country has ever produced.” Sometimesmelancholy, other times joyful, always passionate – shot throughwith a potent soulful impulse.

Her new 10-song collection Sing was co-written with husbandKieran Kennedy, and features duets with Damien Rice, PaulBrady and, on the jawdroppingly beautiful Yes We Will, thelegendary John Prine. Her most accomplished and accessiblework yet, Sing is a celebration of “the power of the voice, thesound a group of people can make when lifting their voicestogether – the human act of singing”.

Touring Sing as much as her and Kieran’s four children willallow, Maria is also contributing to the Uncommon Folk projectre-imagining the songs that made America. Again, DoyleKennedy’s burgeoning status finds her rubbing shoulders withluminaries like Glen Campbell, The Blind Boys of Alabama andMavis Staples. She belongs in such exalted company.

Paul Durcan

The Black BoxThursday 10 January, 1.00pm

Paul Durcan’s readings have attained semi-legendary status, both in Ireland and abroad. They sell out fast and are famousfor reducing audiences to tears of helpless laughter. Currentlyenjoying terrific reviews for his latest collection Praise in WhichI Live and Move and Have My Being, this reading promises tobe a highlight of this year’s Out to Lunch.

There are poems of love lost and won, and poems in memoryof friends and relatives who have passed on, but there is alsojoy to be found in the birth of a grandson, and there is praise, too, for the modest heroism of truckers, air traffic controllersand nurses. If for Sartre ‘hell is other people’, for Durcan‘heaven is other people, especially women’.

“It was mesmerising and spellbinding and deeply affecting eachpoem received in awed silence.” Herald
