Seamus Heaney’s poem, “Out o this World,” is dedicated tothe memory o the Polish poet, Czeslaw Milosz, who in his longlie, experienced the devastation o Eastern Europe through twoWorld Wars and Communist rule. In this poem, Heaney contem-plates the enduring nature o sacred symbols:

Like everybody else I bowed my headduring the consecration o the bread and wine,lifed my eyes to the raised host and chalice,believed (whatever it means) that a change occurred.

I went to the altar rails and received the mystery on my tongue, returned to my place, shut my eyes ast, madean act o thanksgiving, opened my eyes, and elttime start up again.

. . . . . . . . . . . . . I cannotdisavow words like “thanksgiving” or “host”or “communion bread.” Tey have an undyingtremor and draw, like well water ar down.

Tis is not about being Catholic, but about sacred mystery

embodied in symbols, powerul symbols such as the cross, im-ages o birth and death, mother, ather – music. Te experienceis innocent in the sense o being without cynicism or irony, obeing ully open and immediately present to the ull power othe deep unknown.

David Maslanka was born in New Bedord, Massachusetts in .He attended the Oberlin College Conservatory where he studiedcomposition with Joseph Wood. He spent a year at the Mozarte-um in Salzburg, Austria, and did masters and doctoral study incomposition at Michigan State University where his principalteacher was H. Owen Reed.

Maslanka’s music or winds has become especially well known.Among his orty-plus works or wind ensemble and band areSymphonies , , , , , , and , twelve concertos, a Mass, andmany concert pieces. His wind chamber music includes our windquintets, our saxophone quartets, and many works or solo in-strument and piano. In addition, he has written a variety o or-chestral and choral pieces.

David Maslanka’s compositions are published by MaslankaPress, Carl Fischer, Inc., Kjos Music Company, Marimba Pro-ductions, Inc., and OU Percussion Press, and have been recordedon Albany, Reerence Recordings, BIS (Sweden), Naxos, Cambria,CRI, Mark, Novisse, AUR, Caua (Japan), Brain Music (Japan),Barking Dog, and Klavier labels. He has served on the acultieso the State University o New York at Geneseo, Sarah LawrenceCollege, New York University, and Kingsborough Community
