Welcome to Out of the Box 2012 ...In 2012 Out of the Box celebrates its 20th birthday.

Anniversaries are a time for refl ection and gratitude

and I acknowledge the enormous contributions

from the dedicated Out of the Box staff, artists, arts

workers and volunteers of the festival over 20 years,

many of whom are still working on the current festival.

Since the festival’s inception in 1992, QPAC has

recognised the need to provide national leadership

in the area of early childhood arts education through

Out of the Box. The original belief that the early years

of children’s lives determined their future wellbeing is

as alive today as it was 20 years ago. As a publicly

funded institution, QPAC’s conviction that children’s

early lives really matter, is supported by our Cultural

Centre partners, the State Library of Queensland,

the Queensland Museum and the Queensland Art

Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art.

The festival was championed by the former CEO of

QPAC, Dr Tony Gould, and the inaugural Executive

Producer, the late June O’Dowd, with me as the

inaugural Artistic Director (1992, 1994). Artistic

Directors, Cate Fowler (1996, 1998), Susan Richer

(2000, 2002, 2004), Mark Radvan (2006, 2008),

Rose Myers (2010) and Executive Producer, Carol

Davidson (2012), have all maintained and extended

the integrity of a festival aimed at inspiring, educating

and entertaining ‘little ones’.

What distinguishes every aspect of Out of the Box

– from planning and viewing performances, eating,

playing, painting, dancing, the train trip to and from

the festival – is a deeply thought through positioning

of the role of children and their relationship within

the communities in which they live. The festival’s

underlying aim is always to enhance children’s

experience through involvement in the arts by

encouraging a sense of wonder, curiosity, discovery

and ‘serious fun’.

The importance of the concept of ‘serious fun’

as an educational imperative could not have been

known 20 years ago, but today with neuroeducation

we know for sure – we always suspected – that

children do not pay attention to boring things, it is

emotional engagement that helps the brain learn. This

is where the arts shine!

As always, there’s a glorious and vibrant program

of performances, workshops, and free events across

the entire Cultural Centre. There is also a Symposium

entitled, Connecting the Dots. Its aim is to fuse

discussions around how arts education, practice

and the science of child development can bring new

understanding to support adults who support children.

Throughout QPAC – the Board of Trustees,

management, front of house and behind the scenes

staff, Out of the Box is a treasured event on the

calendar. Its sustained excellence and commitment

to young Queenslanders is something we are all

justifi ably proud of and committed to continuing in the

years to come. We look forward to welcoming you

all – thousands of beautiful, hopeful, eager children,

your families, carers and teachers – to help us sing a

loud and joyful happy birthday to Out of the Box!

The Flying Orchestra

Children will be swept away into a whimsical world of lingering rhythms and delightful possibilities when the book by Queensland writer and illustrator Clare McFadden is magically recreated for the stage.

A dazzling piece of visual theatre, The Flying Orchestra follows the journey of a magical orchestra through life’s key milestones. Directed by world renowned puppetry artist Peter Wilson (The Red Tree, How to Train Your Dragon, King Kong), The Flying Orchestra uses innovative puppetry and design to create an enchanting

new work celebrating the sublime power of music in all aspects of life. It’s visual theatre and live music at its fi nest, a performance for the whole family to enjoy.

A QPAC PRODUCTION

Written and Illustrated by Clare McFadden. Published by University of Queensland Press, 2010.

Some days are so windy that even the angels lose

their balance ... It’s always a day like this when

the Flying Orchestra blows into town.

We Built This City

The limitless power of children’s imagination, expression and good old fashioned fun will come into play as QPAC becomes one giant cardboard construction site!

We Built This City invites everyone to release their inner architectural, design and construction skills to build tunnels and construct towers using not one, but thousands of boxes! Be part of the fun as buildings go up, are pulled down, redesigned, extended, walked through and reconstructed.

We Built This City has delighted children everywhere from Washington to London to Korea and Japan. Amongst the typical mayhem, Polyglot’s performers will rove the site in the roles of construction workers, setting tasks and becoming characters who help bring an essence of community spirit into play. This ground-breaking and beautiful production explores the moment by moment fascination of being a baby. Developed through extensive research into ways in which babies and their adults tune into one another, this gentle piece is presented especially for babies and parents. At times, the performance becomes a special space where babies and performers together create something spontaneous and uniquely original. As they observe each other dancing, creating sounds and images together, the babies become comfortable and are encouraged to voyage bravely out to meet the performers with their own sounds and movements.A SALLY CHANCE DANCE PRODUCTION

Using storytelling, children will discover some of the different symbols, marks and pictures people from around the world use to tell stories, both from the past and the present. Children will be introduced to Egyptian hieroglyphic picture writing and will match pictures to letters in an interactive game. Using everyday images to make our own picture writing, children will create their name in picture letters as wearable art. Children will also use their picture name to make up a funny story.

Scary BeastDo you have monsters under your bed? This is your chance to create your own imaginative story about a ‘scary beast’ using role play and bluescreen technology. Presented by the Australian Children’s Television Foundation (ACTF) this practical workshop is inspired by the ‘Yamuti’ featured in the Indigenous animation Wadu Matyidi, and provides an opportunity for children to develop their own imaginative ‘scary beast’ story for show and tell. The participants are given the opportunity to demonstrate their story in a studio setting with a multimedia artist.

Dream WeaversDream WeaversThis ’join-in performance’ follows Ashleigh & Darcy and their brave friends as they drift into their dream world of stories and adventures. Travel with them through space, over oceans, fi ghting with pirates, through jungles with bands of marauding monkeys and dancing with monsters. Children in the audience will ‘dream weave’ Ashleigh’s, Darcy’s and their friends adventures as they determine what happens next in a 20 minute performance. The performance is followed by a 25 minute workshop where the children create their own dream dance.

Come and create a sound story using digital technologies and gaming. Make sound tracks, play with light and colour and explore new virtual spaces. This workshop by sound designer/noise maker/musician/professional geek and loopoligist Peter Nelson and KITE Teacher artist Johanna Searles will bring out the inventor in every child.

Chalk the Walk

Children are invited to share their experience of the festival through pictures and words directly onto the walls of the QPAC Tunnel!

Running through the heart of QPAC, the pedestrian tunnel will become a giant chalk board and gallery. Blackboard balloons will fi ll the walls, providing a perfect canvas for creative young artists to share the magical moments of their day.

Drawing tables and a gallery wall will offer an alternative space for budding visual artists. Parents and carers can join in or sit back with a coffee and watch proceedings from the adjoining lounge.
