The Opening Door…Among my favorite ways to

begin the New Year is to begin the day with prayer.

There is one prayer in particular which I turn to year

after year. It is a prayer for the opening door from a

prayer book I turn to time and again, Celtic Daily

Prayer: Prayers and Readings from the Northumbria

Community (HarperOne: 2002, p238). As we

embark on the journey of this New Year perhaps

this is a prayer we can

share together no matter

where we find ourselves.

“This is to be used as

a ‘first-footing’ prayer. In

Scotland and the northern

parts of England, New

Year is given much

importance: folk go from

house to house wishing

each other a good year

ahead, and celebrate their

good wishes with food

and plenty of drink. It is

often seen as important

who should be the first to

cross the threshold and

‘bring in the year’ once midnight has passed.

“This song (spoken or sung) asks Christ Himself

to come and ‘first-foot’ for us. The door is opened to

welcome Him in and invite His blessing, whether He

comes in silence or in the company of other guests.

“This day is a new day

that has never been before.

This year is a new year,

the opening door.

Open the door

Enter, Lord Christ—

we have joy in Your coming.

You have given us life;

and we welcome Your coming.

I turn now to face You,

I lift up my eyes.

Be blessing my face,

Lord;

be blessing my eyes.

May all my eye looks on

be blessed and be

bright,

my neighbours, my

loved ones

be blessed in Your sight.

You have given us life

and we welcome Your

coming.

Be with us, Lord,

we have joy, we have

joy.

This year is a new year,

the opening door.

Be with us, Lord,

we have joy, we have joy.”

As we open the door to our community at

CSUMC may we welcome Christ and have joy, have

joy. Until we meet again in the New Year,

May God’s grace and peace enfold your spirit,

Letter from *Breezy to Christians at Court Street UMC

Greetings to Court Street UMC.

In this season of giving and being thankful for Jesus, the greatest gift

of all, let’s think and rethink our attitudes about giving. The Bible says

God helps those who help themselves, right? Wrong! Many of us have

heard this statement as a quote from the Bible often but NO, it is not in

the Bible. No big deal you say but may I lovingly point out that if it is

being used as an excuse not to help those in need because they may

have made poor choices or failed to lift themselves by their own

bootstraps as we have been told we should do then I think it would be

good to read carefully Matthew 25:31-46 known commonly as the “least

of these” scripture.

If we have fed the hungry, clothes the naked, cared for the sick, aided

the homeless, welcomed the stranger, we have done this to Christ

himself. This group of people probably does not include those who help

themselves but rather those in need of our help, of course. God helps

those who help themselves but indeed God helps everyone and thus so

should we. God does not check a list of naughty or nice but rather gives

help to all who call upon him. As we give and receive at Christmas, please

remember “the least of these.”

Peace, love, and joy,

Mary Beth Wimp

Each month we will take the time to thank those who’ve made a

difference in the life of our community both inside and outside the walls

of the building. This month we celebrate the ministry of our

Administrative Assistant Becky Teacutter. She has done much behind

the scenes to empower us for ministry. She creates an atmosphere of

hospitality in the office with her many lamps and the lovely plants she

nurtures. Becky has been invaluable to the ministry of Court Street UMC.

We are excited for a new opportunity that has come her way. She will be

the full-time administrative assistant at Olivet Christian Church which is

only a short two miles from home. Her skills will now bless a sister

congregation. Becky’s last day in the office is Friday, January 5. Please

take the opportunity to express your appreciation in the days ahead.

Becky, know that you have been an angel among us! We Hold You in

High Regard! Way to Go!!

Church Directory Update

The new directory should be ready during the first part of January.

Proofing is going on now and once printed, copies will be handed out in

church or mailed to members.

Year-End Giving Statements Coming Soon!

Year-end giving statements for 2017 will be mailed in January. Please

check your statement carefully for errors and/or omissions and let the

church office know so that corrections can be made and a new statement

issued to you for your tax returns.

GO - spend some time at Wiley House

Wiley House is a homeless shelter for single men and women

operated by Our House here in Fulton.

On normal days the shelter is closed during the daytime and guests

are expected to GO find something to do to help their cause. Sundays

are unusual in that the library, community center, and most businesses

are closed. After morning church hours there is no warming place for our

unsheltered neighbors.

That's where you come in. You can make a real difference in

someone's life by volunteering to spend a little time at Wiley House on

a Sunday afternoon this winter while it is so cold. I spent part of

Christmas Eve there so the guests could watch football and munch

snacks instead of being put out in the snow.

Call me if you would like to help in this act of mercy

Sunday Morning Hospitality

This is for all of you who have ever said, "I would be happy to help,

but no one has invited me." This is the year you have been waiting for!

Starting right now Sunday morning hospitality will be coordinated

by crews of recruiters (see list below). Each Sunday the crew will invite

others to participate in the welcoming and greeting of all our guests.

That way we can all help without the pressure of commitment to a

schedule. Help whenever you are here!

One of the many ways your church has offered to

give to others is through the faithful payment of your

conference apportionments for 2017. I pray that as

you have given in generosity, you have found joy in

the giving.

Please know that the gifts you offer through your

conference apportionments are faithfully used to lead

congregations to lead people to actively follow Jesus

Christ; that’s our mission together. So together we

train pastors and start new churches. Together we

provide opportunities for youth and college students

to come to know Jesus Christ, sometimes in camps,

sometimes on campuses, sometimes at WOW, and

sometimes in our local churches. Together we reach

out in services in Haiti and Mozambique and in places

of every disaster of every good kind. Together we

work to keep our sanctuaries safe, and we invite

people to find their ways of serving God. Together we

provide a great witness of grace and justice and hope.

For your faithfulness and generosity, again I say

thanks. Giving, not getting, is the way.

Blessings,

2017 Christmas

Bazaar Recap

With the holidays winding

down, we can now reflect back on

our many activities. The 65th

annual Christmas Bazaar was

indeed a memorable day. The

crowds were excited, shoppers

plentiful and spirits certainly in

holiday-mode. Angels were

among us everywhere! Again, my

sincere thanks to all those who

had a part in the making the day

such a great success!.

At the end of the day, we were

all tired but proud of another

successful Bazaar. In total, our

income topped out at about

$10,200 and expenses at about

$2,275, so our net is about $7,925

(final totals still being calculated).

In addition, the family of Lottie

Proctor asked that all her ‘in

memory’ gifts be directed to

Bazaar expenses, so that will add

another $1,500 to the day. Many

thanks to the family for making

that great gift.
