Compassion – We put others first

“Don’t do anything from selfish ambition or from a cheap desire to boast, but be humble towards one another, always considering others better than yourselves. And look out for one another’s interests, not just for your own. The attitude you should have is the one that Christ Jesus had.” Philippians 2:3-4 (GNB)

Principal ’ s Ponderings…

Kia ora Parents, On Tuesday morning, at 6.50am, Mr Norton, Mrs McLister, and myself travelled south to Ashburton to run the Year 9/10 Christian Schools Athletics. This involved pupils from Hillview Christian School, Timaru Christian School, Emmanuel Christian School, Rolleston Christian School, and Aidanfield Christian School. There were approximately 150 pupils in attendance. The event was a tremendous success with several records being broken by outstanding performances. I was most impressed by the attitude and behaviour of the pupils. Nationwide, the Year 9/10 pupils can often be the target of criticism relating to substandard behaviour and achievement. However, this was definitely not the case on Tuesday. In fact I would conclude this was one of the best Y9/10 athletic events during my time at Hillview. It reinforced to me the merits of having a Y7-10 Middle School. The pupils competed with enthusiasm, there was regular encouragement to competitors, and I observed a number of examples where the young people served both adults and pupils. All of the 5 schools mixed together well and it was especially encouraging to hear pupils not only support friends from their school but pupils from other schools. We are very thankful that God has blessed us with the resources to provide such an event for others to participate in and enjoy. Two weeks ago I wrote about our proprietors (SCCET) and the significant influence they have had on establishing our school and the strength of the relationship we have enjoyed together. The second group that needs mentioning is the Board of Trustees (BOT). There are eleven members on our BOT. This comprises 5 elected parents (Mr Andy Ayers, Mr Nick Regnault, Mr AJ Rossouw, Mrs Jill Atkinson - Deputy Chair, and Mrs Catherine Blockley), 4 proprietor representatives (Mr James Brown, Mr Warren Gouman, Mr David Donaldson, and Mr Aaron Donaldson – Chair), 1 staff representative (Mrs Julianne Tscherry), and the principal. The Board is a dedicated group of volunteers who regularly exhibit a genuine passion for the school to succeed in its core business – teaching and learning within a Christian environment. I am amazed at how God draws together such a variety of people who possess an array of gifts and uses them to govern the school with spiritual wisdom, courage, and insight. Currently, the longest serving BOT parent – elected member is Mrs Atkinson (9 years) and she has been involved in some major decisions regarding the future of the school. Sadly she has decided not to stand in the upcoming triennial school trustee elections. She will be sorely missed. The BOT elections will be held in Term 2 and provide an opportunity for parents to be nominated and elected for the next 3 years. I would encourage parents to consider carefully if this is the direction in which God is leading them.

The relationship between the BOT and the school leadership is extremely important. The Bible teaches that when brothers and sisters dwell in unity there is blessing and this is something we wish to protect for years to come. Please continue to pray that our Board may continually be equipped, empowered, and enabled to fulfil God’s purposes in their role as governors of the school. Many blessings, Steve Frost (Principal)

Tips for Learning

Year 3-6: I.C.T [by Ross Meecham] Age-based guidelines for kids' Internet use: If your children use the Internet at home, you already know how important it is to help protect them from inappropriate content and contact. All family members should act as role models for young children who are just starting to use the Internet.

Noticeboard

2.1 School Production Year 5-10 – A reminder that every Thursday afternoon (apart from week 8) there will be a rehearsal from 3.30-5.00pm for all cast members. Students who auditioned or put their names down are automatically in the cast. A notice was given out to students last week and return slips are overdue. Thank you to parents who have offered to help with the production. We would love to hear from anyone who is able to help sew or source costumes, or help to apply makeup. If you are available in these areas please contact Philippa Becker on [email protected].

2.2 Fiji Mufti Day Fundraiser – TOMORROW, Friday 11 March, we will be running a school mufti day to raise money to help Fiji recover from the terrible storm they experienced recently. The money raised will be targeted at Sawanivo, a remote village in Fiji who currently have no organisation assisting

them. They are in desperate need of food and shelter due to the fact that only 5 houses are still standing in a village of 80-100 people. With access being restricted to a 5 hour walk the immediate response will also likely be temporary shelters and trying to reconstruct what is left of their houses for now, once the road reopens bigger building materials can be bought in but with the bridges out the time frame of the road reopening is unknown. Please give generously as you are able.

2.3 Orientation afternoon – We will be running this for New Entrants starting at Hillview in Term 2, 2016. For the following children starting in Room 12 with Mrs Tscherry, their Orientation will be on Tuesday 15 March at 1.30pm: Esther Alcock, Calista Botherway, Lucy Frew, Ayvah Laloata, Nkumbu Mutambo, Nikita Nilov, Vadim Pulin, Azaria Shaw, and Ayla William-Harris. An email with more details was sent on Monday 22 February. If you have not received this please contact Claire Onslow on [email protected]

2.4 Year 10 Leadership Day – The Year 10 Leaders will be having their 1st leadership development day visiting Ashburton Christian School on Tuesday 5 April. They will be leaving Hillview at 7.00am sharp and returning around 4.30pm. Any questions please contact Mr Frost.

2.5 Year 5-8 Swimming Team to South Zones – The Year 5-8 Zone team will compete on Monday 14 March 9.45-11.45am at Jellie Park. A team list is on the Sports Blog.

2.7 Hillview Hockey 2016 – We will again be entering Saturday teams into the Canterbury Hockey Association Junior Competitions. The teams practice at school or the Sydenham Turf in lunchtimes. We have a strong link with the Southern United Club, entering under their name and have use of their turf in Sydenham for practices. Year 0-2 students have a fun Friday after school session at the Sydenham turf. Full information is

on the Sports Blog or contact Paul Norton: [email protected]

2.8 School Pool Closure – The school pool will close Thursday 24 March. Please return you key to the office for your refund. Thanks

After checking your child’s teeth a ‘Care Plan’ may have been sent home to let you know that further dental care is required. If you have not made an appointment yet please phone our Call Centre today as we would like to see your child as soon as possible. If your child has not been seen during our visit you can talk to the staff in the mobile, or phone/email our Call Centre. Please remember to encourage your child to brush their teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste! To contact our Call Centre: phone 0800 846 983 or email [email protected]

2.10 Prayer Changes…Calling all parents – Are you able to be part of the story of building God's kingdom here at Hillview?
