Luke 21:25-36

25 “And there will be signs in the sun and the moon and the stars, and on the earth anxiety of nations in perplexity of the sound of the sea and surf, 26 while people faint from fear and expectation of the things that are coming on the inhabited earth; for the powers of the heavens will be shaken. 27 And then they will see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. 28 When these things begin to happen, stand erect and lift up your heads because your redemption draws near.” 29 And Jesus told them a parable: “You see the fig tree and all the trees; 30 when they burst into leaf, you see for yourselves and you know that summer is near; 31 so also, when you see these things happening you know that the kingdom of God is near. 32 Truly I tell you that by no means will this generation pass away until all things will have taken place. 33 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will by no means pass away. 34 And take heed to yourselves lest your hearts become burdened with carousing and drunkenness and the anxieties of life, so that the day comes upon you suddenly, 35 as a trap; for it will come on all who sit on the face of all the earth. 36 And be watchful at all times, begging that you may be able to escape all these things about to happen, and to stand before the Son of Man.” (Translation by Keith Hamilton)

Reflections

This Sunday is the first Sunday of Advent. It is the start of the new church year, which this year will focus on the Gospel of Luke. It is also marks four weeks to get ready for Christmas. The Christian faith believes that not only did Jesus walk this earth, also as the Nicene creed confesses:

“for our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again from the dead in accordance with the scriptures; he ascended into heaven was crucified, died and was buried, on the third day rose from the dead, according to the scriptures, he ascended into heave and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and he dead, and his kingdom will have no end.”

The Christian faith is that Jesus will come again, though in a different form to the first Christmas, and that through the Holy Spirit of God, comes again in the life of believers. This is captured in that word advent, which means coming or arrival, and is the focus of attention for Christians in this season leading to Christmas and is captured in the words of Christmas carols.

The following photos were taken at the Church Council held last week. The two chaplains, Amelai Koh-Butler, PM WSU chaplain, and Sarah Bishop, Chaplain at the Children’s hospital Westmead (CHW) presented their annual reports. They did this in an interactive way that enabled Church Council members to see and experience something of the ministries. Both these ministries commenced in 2018, and the Church Council celebrated the development, relationships created and strengthening of the relationships between PM and WSU and PM and CHW. Most importantly, hearing how as we have walked beside people, particularly at difficult times, has been transforming.

Headspace Mt Druitt 10th Birthday 29 November 2018

The painting below was specially commissioned for the occasion, and will hang in the headspace office in Mt Druitt.

The rock engravings represent that we are in Darug country and they are part of our creation story, the footprints coming in are the mobs from other areas that have come to live in and visit Mt Druitt. The waratah is for healing (headspace) and the flannel flowers are the flowers for the Darug people - there are 10 representing the 10 years.”

Page 13: Our Vision A Community Transforming Lives - Parramatta Mission · This is a very proud moment for Parramatta Mission as we have been part of headspace Mt Druitt since its inception

And some information regarding Leanne Watson (the artist): “Leanne Watson, is a Darug woman commonly known in the Aboriginal community as Mulgo, meaning Black Swan. Leanne is the daughter of Aunty Edna Watson and Uncle Allan Watson, Elders of the Darug community who are the traditional custodians of the land. Leanne has been the director of Darug Custodian Aboriginal Corporation for the past 15 years and has worked to promote Darug culture through her esteemed artwork and cultural knowledge.” headspace Mt Druitt was originally launched on the 26th November 2008. This is a very proud moment for Parramatta Mission as we have been part of headspace Mt Druitt since its inception and have been the lead agent for over 9 years. Parramatta Mission’s vision is a community transforming lives. headspace Mt Druitt has epitomised this vision having over the years booked 26,000 - 30,000 appointments and completed 20,000 appointments with young people in need of support. headspace MT Druitt has also seen the expansion of its services with the addition of the headspace Youth Early Psychosis Program which since July 2017 as a cluster, has achieved 66,000 occasions of service. We have not done this alone, we have had the support from: Wentwest Primary Health Network, headspace National, Orygen Youth Mental Health and our amazing consortium. We acknowledge all who have been part of headspace Mt Druitt over these past ten years, including our strong and passionate headspace team and our youth advisory committee members who have been dedicated to the Mt Druitt community and Young people for many years now.

Page 14: Our Vision A Community Transforming Lives - Parramatta Mission · This is a very proud moment for Parramatta Mission as we have been part of headspace Mt Druitt since its inception

Kathi Boorman, our Director of Community and Clinical Services also gave a speech. Kathi has a long history with headspace Mt Druitt being there with its implementation and launch 10 years ago. Kathi spoke of the wonderful service that Parramatta Mission has provided through headspace Mt Druitt has provided to the community over the past 10 years. The service has been founded on partnership – partnership with the community, partnership with stakeholders, but most importantly the partnership with young people and their families. She reminded us all of the key to headspace in keeping the focus on young people and ended her speech with a quote from a young person stating that “we [headspace] are here to fight the fear…We are here to pick you up… And we are here to help you.”” Daniel Angus, Psychologist | Manager of headspace Services, also made a speech. “This centre, run by Parramatta Mission, although not yet a teenager has become a part of the bedrock of our community. Since opening we have supported more than 10,000 unique individuals and have booked just shy of 50,000 appointments!

headspace Mt Druitt is the name of our team but behind this name are passionate, enthusiastic, dedicated and exceptionally committed staff from Parramatta Mission.

I would like to introduce to you the team that makes this work possible in our community everyday: Acknowledge: ADMIN TEAM – Pradeepa (Senior), Lina (our longest serving staff member of headspace Mt Druitt and Hayley the first friendly face that hundreds of young people see on entering headspace for the first time are the backbone of headspace Mt Druitt.

Our goal at headspace is to help young people spot problems as early as possible and provide as much help as we can to young people and their families to ensure they get the best possible assistance they can. Our Primary Care Team led by Melissa Farkas do this everyday and will see every young person who walks into our centre! An exceptional bunch of enthusiastic, engaging and skilled team with Rachel, Sarah, Canny, Manda, Tanya, Patrick and Emily (who just started with us this week), they are the frontline – the first stop and hopefully for many young people the start of a positive and meaningful recovery

.

Page 15: Our Vision A Community Transforming Lives - Parramatta Mission · This is a very proud moment for Parramatta Mission as we have been part of headspace Mt Druitt since its inception

We have an impressive community presence thanks largely to the tireless work of Rob McElroy, our community development coordinator and Veronica Shenoda who supports our very large team of Youth Advisory Committee Members and our newly established Family and Friends Advisory Committee – our face in the community, it is often their presence at school or community events that people first hear about us at headspace Mt Druitt.

In 2014, we commenced the only headspace Youth Early Psychosis Program in NSW and just one of 6 in Australia. A truly innovative and internationally leading evidence based model for Psychosis Intervention. This is a hub and spoke model with Mt Druitt at the Centre and Penrith and Parramatta connecting in, to support hundreds of arguably our most vulnerable in our community – the hundreds who are either at risk of developing Psychosis or those whom for the first times in their lives have started experiencing Psychosis. We should acknowledge here especially the significant contributions invested by Dr Roger Gurr who is one of the greatest Psychiatrists I have ever met who as Clinical Director has filled every medical gap for us across the cluster but recently back from bypass surgery has continued to extend and cover medical vacancies in our Continuing Care and Mobile Assessment and Treatment Teams. Our Continuing Care Team, led by our longest serving team leader, Josh Onikul from our headspace Youth Early Psychosis Program who actually started as a Private Practitioner at headspace Parramatta has built this team from the ground up. This is a team of 6 brilliant clinicians who can support young people for up to five years. They each hold a caseload of up to 20 young people and I have been blown away by the lengths they will go to supporting these incredibly resilient individuals and their families. From coordinating an international treatment response for a young person missing in New York to taking on parental training and support for a brand new mother to innovating on creative practices to engage young people via Harry Potter – I want to acknowledge the efforts of Kelley, Matthew, Michelle, Monique, Evangeline and India and recently our Psych reg Mo. We also thank Dr Ghada Elbacky for coming on to support the team here as Locum Psychiatrist. We would be remiss not to mention Dr Paul Fung who pioneered this role as our first HYEPP psychiatrist ever!

Page 16: Our Vision A Community Transforming Lives - Parramatta Mission · This is a very proud moment for Parramatta Mission as we have been part of headspace Mt Druitt since its inception

Our Mobile Assessment and Treatment Team led by our exceptional Registered Nurse and one of our longest servicing staff members, Gemma Jones is perhaps one of those remarkable innovations that has allowed us to work with young people where they feel most comfortable, to access them and their families as early as possible and to provide care in the community where ever we can that may result in a delayed or even an avoided inpatient admission. This team is responsible for the early detection of Psychosis or those at risk of developing Psychosis and each of these members work tirelessly from 8:30 through to 10pm at night each day of the week and on weekends to make sure they support young people and their families, often at their most vulnerable. We also have just implemented our on-call function which means our HYEPP young people will now have access to support 24 hours a day. I want to acknowledge our longest serving MATT staff: Stephen (Senior MATT clinician) and Kristie as well as our other senior members – Dr Wije, Kate, Lisa, Julie as well as Anna, Akansha and Katrina along with a group of casual staff including our first every HYEPP Staff member at Penrith – Shaheen, former CCT staff member Derya and others. We thank past consultant psychiatrists and our current locum, Amazon bestselling author and international happiness expert Dr Caroline Manuel. Finally, A special acknowledgement to Maria Fidel who after supporting the MATT team as team leader whilst Gemma was on Maternity Leave has moved into a new critically important role as GP Nurse Educator – she has ventured out to more than 30 local medical centres and GP practices in the past number of months to educate and support GPs in early Psychosis detection and referral pathways into headspace Mt Druitt

Our Functional Recovery Team led by Marko Turner is perhaps one of the most interestingly, creative and dynamic teams of any I have had the pleasure to work with. We have a Peer Workforce, young people and family members with a lived experience of distress working alongside our teams and our young people and families. A truly pioneering accomplishment made possible by the efforts of Gill Abadines and Prasuna Pradhan as Project Officers and now Prasuna as Mentor and Coach to Domina, Felicia and previously Lee-Anne. A team of Art, Music, Dance and Movement, Psychotherapists, Occupational Therapists and Employment/ Educational specialists round out this team with Renee, Jess, Natalie, Melanie, Fiona, Stephanie, Leyla, Jessica and Martin

Page 17: Our Vision A Community Transforming Lives - Parramatta Mission · This is a very proud moment for Parramatta Mission as we have been part of headspace Mt Druitt since its inception

Our headspace model is incomplete without our Private Practice and Consortium contributors. Kellie Smith who is the strength behind our Practice model has supported our private Practitioners to see countless young people – Lilian Gowers has been with us for just over a year now and Santamarie Brunetta, formerly from CCT Penrith has continued her link with us at headspace via her clinic here on Wednesdays. I want to thank them for their contributions. I also want to acknowledge our onsite contributors from our consortium partners: In particular, our brilliantly skilled Britt Corkish from salvation Army’s HeadFYRST program is our onsite Drug and Alcohol Counsellor 3 days per week – and exceptionally talented Sian Dolenc from Ability Options who although about to move into a new role as new mum along with Britt epitomises integrated partnerships to deliver exceptional outcomes for young people. Recently Parramatta Mission’s Foundations program – a youth housing program – particularly with Mark has been providing young people with much needed assistance at headspace.

Finally to all our volunteers, interns and students, support staff from Parramatta Mission and our strong leader Chantal Nagib, it is the countless people I have mentioned and many I have missed both past and present that have contributed to a successful and integral component of our community here in Mt Druitt over the past 10 years and I thank you all for allowing me to acknowledge their work and to allow me contribute to this work as well.”

……………………

Looking ahead, the annual Christmas Carols in Parramatta Square will be held on Thursday 20 December, 6-7pm. All welcome. Contact myself for further details.

Blessings, Keith Hamilton
