2015 Annual Report

The 2015 year saw strong performances for our teams competing at National level as well as the continued force of our men in Australian squads. Our representation from the ladies is improving with representation of Tasmanians in Tasmanian teams increasing and driving a belief that we are one of the top hockey States in a country that performs so well internationally in our sport. Bob Gregory has been an excellent acquisition as General Manager. He is a pleasure to work with. He has a willing and committed staff behind him all of whom are working towards achieving the strategies set by the Board. Added to this has been the completion of our Committee structure which has seen the return of many committed volunteers as well as the addition of many new faces. Together with the Board, the staff and committees make a formidable team. Communication has been a strong focus of the Board. I want to extent my thanks to Jane Austin who drove much of this until her resignation from the Board late in 2015. We have worked hard to increase the level of meaningful communication with our members and I hope that these efforts are seen as effective. Now we turn our focus to new (second screen) technologies to promote our game. One area of concern is the financial position of Hockey Tasmania. While there is no doubt that we are trading solvently and can continue to do so the Board must improve the revenue side of the ledger. The Board is always conscious that we are a body that must serve its members; not continually search for ways to empty their pockets! Emphasis is therefore being placed on income from advertising, business partners and the function centres/bars and kiosks in Hobart and Launceston. I would like to record my thanks to my fellow Board members for their hard work and collegiate approach to delivering on the Strategic Plan.

It is also important to acknowledge the contribution of the club Presidents who are working with Bob and the Board to deliver a much more cohesive plan for hockey in Tasmania that should see the sport well placed in the next decade. Ken Read Chair Hockey Tasmania Board.

2015 Annual Report

2015 was a year of change for Hockey Tasmania with the loss of Hockey Tasmania legend, Gai Cross to retirement. Gai’s commitment to Hockey in this state was unparalleled and it will be a huge challenge to replace her as an employee and as a volunteer. We wish her well in her future life. There were a number of other staff changes during 2015 with Andrew Winch, Fiona Horwood, Will Braid and Anita Silva (Maternity leave) departing and myself, Natalie Sproule , Emily Foster, Tania Barrie, Andrea Pearson and Will Scutt joining the team. With such a significant staff turnover the latter part of 2015 was spent on redefining roles within the Hockey Tasmania office and reengaging with the Hockey Community and Hockey Tasmania committees. I acknowledge that there are continuing points of difference between the Hockey Tasmania office and our clubs, particularly but not exclusively, in the North and North West of the state but I am hopeful that ultimately these differences can be minimised. The 2015 financial result was disappointing with a reduction in revenue across most areas. A number of changes will be made to encourage greater use of the Tasmanian Hockey Centre and the Northern Hockey Centre in 2016. The Board will also prioritise efforts to achieve significant sponsorship income over the next 12 months. Hockey Tasmania successfully hosted the U15 Boys and the U21 Women’s Hockey Australia Championships and the Four Nations tournament in 2015. My thanks to all volunteers and staff that assisted during those events. We are thankful for the Tasmanian Government in assisting with our successful bid for the U18 Male and Women’s Hockey Australia Championships to be held in Launceston in July 2016 and the Women’s Masters Hockey Australia Championship to be held in Hobart in October 2016 In 2016 the priority for the Hockey Tasmania office will be to attempt to reverse the decline in player numbers in the state. The first step will be to increase the number of participation programs for new junior players throughout the state. Members will also notice major changes in the way in which they interact with Hockey Tasmania. Including;

Players will register with Hockey Tasmania directly rather than through their club. All nominations for state teams or programs will be via the Hockey Tasmania internet page. Uniforms and other merchandise will be purchased on line. Information will be sent directly to members rather than through clubs. Social media will be increasing used to promote the sport. These changes should improve our cash flow, reduce administrative costs and improve members understanding of the way in which Hockey Tasmania operates. Congratulations to the athletes and officials who represented Tasmania and Australia in 2015. I would like to thank our sponsors and partners the Tasmanian State Government, The Hobart and Launceston City Councils, Tasmanian Institute of Sport, Just Hockey, McDonalds, NSR Australia, Staples, G J Gardner Homes, Leap Health and Canterbury for their support. I would also like to thank the staff at Hockey Tasmania who have worked very hard in challenging circumstances during 2015 and the Hockey Tasmania Board and the Chairs of committees for their support since my appointment. Finally I would like to acknowledge the outstanding work of volunteers from our clubs. Without them there would be no hockey played in Tasmania. Sometimes that’s forgotten. Bob Gregory General Manager

2015 Annual Report

The financial result for 2015 excluding depreciation was a deficit of $68k. In comparison to the previous year income declined in key areas and expenditure was greater in some categories. Ground Hire revenue was less as there was a later start to the hockey season. There was a reduction in club pre-season training schedules. The Lightning Premiership and Region of Origin competitions were not held. Bar and Kiosk sales were less as a result of the shorter season and maintenance of the price structure from 2014. Although the International Series provided an increase in gate takings, the poor weather impacted on our ability to maximise the potential of the series. Sponsorship and signage income was less. The preparation for the International Series brought forward expenditure in Repairs & Maintenance and Tools & Equipment The transition in the staff structure meant that the Wages and Salaries expense exceeded 2014. The budget in 2016 has Wages and Salaries returning to similar levels as 2014. State team expenses were not covered by state team income. This has been addressed by the introduction of consistent state team management for all state teams which means improved accountability. As a consequence a new budget structure for 2016 was developed across cost centres which will enable measurement of the distinct activities of Hockey Tasmania and allow the ability to determine areas of focus. The Board should be in a position to make strategic decisions with greater confidence in respect of outcomes. The budget excluding depreciation is for a surplus of $50k for 2016. This should commence a pathway to a more solid footing moving forward into 2017. The development and implementation of the Strategic Plan for 2015 -2017 has seen us focus on targeted areas in the Organisation section.

The change to the registration process will enable improved data access with respect to player numbers and demographics together with streamlining the administrative process and improving cash flow. This will allow Hockey Tasmania to develop data sets that determine areas which require support on a state wide basis bringing a more coordinated approach to hockey. Improved management regarding ground hire availability should improve our revenue for ground hire as well as benefiting the clubs. The Board has sponsorship as a key focus at present and is working on some exciting possibilities to provide an increased and more consistent revenue flow from this source. Review of financing to access options available in respect of our borrowing to have a more flexible and effective facility. The committee structure finalised in 2015 will assist in supporting the strategic plan. The Infrastructure Committee will be key to supporting the General Manager in the redevelopment of Turf 3 at the THC. We once again thank the State Government for their support in the turf redevelopments which will facilitate Hockey Tasmania to host the under 18 men’s and women’s championships in Launceston in July and the Women’s Masters in Hobart later in the year. Also we recognise the ongoing support from the State Government for hockey development and the Hobart and Launceston City Councils. Bob Gregory and Sally Crosby are to be commended for their work in 2015 and the support they have provided to the Finance & Audit Committee. We look forward to a successful 2016 both on the turf and financially. Margot Maddock Chair, Finance and Audit Committee.

2015 Annual Report

In 2015, the Officiating committee comprised of the regional co-ordinators; Robert Gregory (SHL), Sandra De Paoli & Richard Sherriff (NCC), Janine Gibson (Burnie), Minka Woolley (Devonport), Deb Burgess (Smithton) and Will Braid (HT GD). Their commitment to the development of officiating is to be commended and I thank them for their support throughout the year. Also thanks to Lorraine Smith, Colin Pearson and David Saunders for their continued support and input during the year, which was vital for the smooth running of the officiating portfolio. Also a special thanks to Gai Cross for her administration duties. Without these people volunteering their time, the gains the committee has made to benefit the wider hockey community would not be possible. The Officiating group continued to be a productive and proactive committee developing a strategic plan based on the overarching Hockey Tasmania Officiating goals. The group is working towards achieving eleven objectives by the end of 2019: to have officials involved at all levels of HA tournaments; to have Tas umpires at AHL and others knocking on the door; to have Tas Umpires considered for Road to Tokyo and beyond; to have a direct line of communication with the HA Officiating Committee; to have senior and panel umpires putting back in via mentoring work especially at JLW; to have minimum of 10 UCs/mentors for junior umpires in each region; to have a minimum of 20 UC across the state working together to enhance officiating; to have accredited TOs for all PL and Div 1 matches; to have technology utilised in all regions to provide quality feedback for officials; to have ten new faces on the officiating committee who aren’t involved in 2014; to have a pool of accredited umpires officiating across regions around the state. Regions held forums and courses to increase people’s knowledge of the rules as well as mentoring developing umpires with the assistance of umpire coaches within regions. Local Officiating committees require clubs to continue to promote officiating opportunities so that we continue to grow our umpire base, in indoor and outdoor formats. Reinforcement of the principles of the Play the Whistle program was continued and will again be a focus

for all regions in 2016. Clubs need to continue to be proactive in their support of this program and be diligent with their members to so that we see an environment which encourages people to become officials. The June Long Weekend tournament is our major avenue for developing both umpires and technical bench personnel. With the tournament being held in Hobart, regional directors targeted developing umpires who received written and verbal feedback from umpire coaches. The JLW continues to be used as our avenue to select umpires for our junior interstate tournaments. Svelto Logistics NW Hockey Umpiring Academy continued its good work under the guidance of Minka Woolley to develop young North West umpires which is building a strong umpiring base in the North- West and for the state. Svelto Logistics (David and Kylie Kenworthy) again spon-sored this program and McKenna Park committee provid-ed their facilities at no cost. A significant part of the pro-gram involved mentors providing regular feedback and support for the developing umpires. An expansion of this program into other regions in 2016 will grow our junior umpiring base. A number of Academy graduates were se-lected for National Championships with Leah Denny, Ro-han Murfet (U/12), Shaun Redman (Indoor) and Luke Har-dy(U/13) all representing Tasmania for the first time as umpires. Again in 2015 we struggled with numbers to run Hockey Ed Courses for officials, but we continued to see a larger number of players completing the on-line umpires begin-ners course; however finishing the practical assessment and handing in the required forms is still an issue that we need to rectify. Congratulations to Lorraine Smith for receiving Hockey Australia service award and Minka Woolley on her Life membership to Hockey Tas. 2015 junior and senior umpiring awards were presented across the state in recognition of their contribution to umpiring

2015 Annual Report

Indoor hockey continues to provide an opportunity for players to experience and enjoy another form of the sport at both local and national levels, through the hard work and dedication of several people who are passionate about the sport.

The committee comprises Jenny Middleton, Phil Pregnell, Colin Pearson, David Budgeon, and John Trueman. Administrative support from Sally Crosby and Nat Sproule of HT, has been invaluable and greatly appreciated. Others have provided additional support including Andrea Pearson and Kath Arneman.

Regionally, competitions are held in the north and south, and were it possible to offer the same quality of facility in the south as the Silverdome provides in the north, the standard would improve further. Cost is always a factor and does temper what can be offered. We also need to achieve growth in and development of officials to support this sport, both regionally and nationally.

I would like to thank the coaches and managers of our representative teams this year, who continue to provide unqualified support and give freely of their time, to ensure Tasmania can field as many teams as possible on the national stage. This year we entered Open Women, U18 Men and Women and U15 Men and Women, in the National Championships which were conducted throughout January in Wollongong. These will be held at the same venue in 2017 in January on dates yet TBA by HA. Unfortunately with several key players unavailable, for the first time in several years, we were unable to enter an Open Men’s team. Colin Pearson, Andrea Pearson, Phil Pregnell, Suzie Calvert, Emily Nunn, Scott Harper, Jayden Pearson, Simone Bingham and Courtney Pearson filled the various coaching and managerial roles.

Hopefully as a sport we will be able to address scheduling, cost, facility and equipment issues which do affect participation and growth and with an expanded committee and feedback from interested parties, this can be achieved.

2015 Annual Report

Season 2015 was challenging, there are many areas we must improve upon. Rosters were finalised late, and many changes to rosters throughout the season created frustration for Club Administrators and discontent amongst players. Umpiring standards and numbers are an urgent priority, and lack of turf time for training is a constant issue.

In April 2015 the members of the Southern Competition Committee (SCC) agreed to set priorities for the year. For the past two years (for various reasons) we had been like a ‘rudderless ship’, no direction, and no concrete outcomes. Our agreed main priority for 2015 was a reform of the Premier League competition.

The Department of Premier & Cabinet, Communities Sport & Recreation (CSR) were contacted with a view to conducting a forum of interested members in order to establish targets. Sarah Davidson from CSR agreed to assist us. A survey was conducted in June followed by the forum on the 11th of July. The two main outcomes / recommendations from the forum were;

Premier League - upgrade the current competition and build the Premier League Brand, incorporating;

Creating a ‘stand out’ competition with team & sponsor announcements, music, ball kids and other initiatives;

Establishment of an Athlete Advisory Panel comprising of a male and female Premier league player from each team to make recommendations to the SCC;

Playing 17 minute quarters;

Re-establishing the umpiring framework. Improvements to the quantity & quality of premier pool umpires;

New competitions, there were two popular proposals;

Pre-season / Knockout / Lightning Premiership Comp.

The Lightning Premiership was held on the 5th of March

Draft Style Super Competition

This phase of the project will be considered this season, and if possible implemented in 2017.

It gives me great pleasure to report that we have managed to action all the recommendations. It has been a positive and highly successful project.

Thanks to all those who responded to the survey, and thanks also to those who attended the forum to assist with setting the targets. There is also a small group who contributed a lot to ensuring we remained focused and committed to the task of achieving the objectives.

Special recognition must go to Sarah Davidson from CSR, Alistair Addison, Alison Monk and Phil Sargent, this group were committed to ensuring we achieved our targets, they contributed many hours, and a great deal of positive energy to the project. Thanks also to Bob Gregory the General Manager of Hockey Tasmania, whilst Bob cannot physically support us due to his role with Hockey Tasmania, he has always been extremely positive and supportive of the initiatives we have proposed.

The Southern Competition Committee enters the 2016 season with more direction and purpose. With the initiatives from the 2015 forum in place we must ensure the standard of our Premier League competition continues to be professional, and we are committed to maintaining this focus.

Our main priority for 2016 is to look at reforming our junior competition. Numbers at under 8 and 10 age groups are increasing rapidly which is magnificent, however, this adds pressure to Club volunteers. We must ensure that the structure of our junior competition is robust to cater for increased numbers in future years.

Members of the Southern Competition Committee in 2015 were; Alison Monk; Sharon Lacey; Justin Bessell; Jane Ansell; Jenny Middleton; Mark O’Connor; Damian Smith; Corrina Smith; Stephen Oliver; Stuart Beltz; Bob Gregory; Emily Foster & Brigid Ritchie.

A big thank you to the members mentioned above who attend the monthly SCC meetings. Thanks also to those who chair, or are members of the many sub committees which are attached to the SCC, and enable us to conduct our competition. Your support is greatly appreciated, and your contribution invaluable.

The SCC is in good shape. Volunteer numbers are increasing, junior numbers are increasing from the bottom up, and senior player numbers have increased slightly. We must strive to ensure our competition continues to accommodate players of all ages, and maintains it’s appeal as a sport of choice.

Brigid Ritchie

SCC Convenor

29

2015 Annual Report

For many years and a variety of reasons our sport has been struggling to maintain its player numbers and standing in our regional community and, unfortunately, 2015 continued in that vein.

Our Clubs continue to strive to deliver well-priced player benefits which encourage their members to remain in our sport and/or renew their relationship, as well as build the foundations on which our sport can grow in appeal and numbers ‘on the park’, however the region’s socio-economic structure and performance weighed heavily against them and we were, once again, confronted with a contraction in senior player numbers.

Despite those factors, our players remained resolute in their determination to achieve positive outcomes from their commitment and this was reflected in our success in fielding representatives in both State and National squads across all age groups. We are confident that the experience gained by these players on the National stage will provide flow on benefits to the broader competition that will hold our sport in good stead for years to come.

On the competition front, South Launceston led the charge in the GNLM competition and finished the season on a high with a hard-fought win over Burnie Baptist to claim the premiership. In the women’s GNL, it was a closely fought affair throughout the season and ultimately just one goal separated Queechy Penguins from the premiership silverware which was taken home by West Devonport.

The end-of-season presentations highlighted the contribution of our players across all facets of our game, from team support to coaching and officiating, and all award nominees are to be congratulated for their efforts. Congratulations also go to Queechy Penguins Hockey Club for being named Club Champions in both junior and senior divisions of the Northern Competition.

On a sadder note, we farewelled two stalwarts of the Launceston competition during the latter part of the year with firstly Jason Scott being tragically killed in a car accident on the NW coast and then Gai Cross deciding to retire from her role as long-serving convenor of the NCC. Both Jason and Gai left an indelible mark on our competition and they will be

sorely missed by all who knew them.

With all that said and done, we now look forward to 2016 with new eyes, a new vision, and a determination to achieve bigger and better things for our players and our competition and the positives that we know are just around the corner.

2015 Annual Report

The 2015 Committee for Circular Head Hockey consisted of:

Chairperson - Kylie Monson (Tigers Hockey Cub)

Deputy Chairperson – Ara Popowski (Mustangs Hockey Club)

Secretary – Jenny Poke (Robins Hockey Club)

Melissa Stokes – Rostering/umpiring Convenor (Tigers Hockey Club)

Finance Officer – Joanie Coker (Mustangs Hockey Club)

Publicity Officer – Mel Haywood (Tigers Hockey Club)

The 2015 season started off well with numbers remaining strong with all of our senior teams – Robins, Tigers, Mustangs and Irishtown Hockey Clubs.

Our finals were very competitive across all divisions.

Grand Finalists for 2015 were: Irishtown - Division 3, Tigers Division 2 and Smithton Primary White - Juniors. It was a very competitive season for all teams.

Div 2 Best & Fairest – Julia Gale

Div 3 Best & Fairest – Jodie Smith

Junior Best & Fairest (Boys) Henry Wright; (Girls) Lara Porteus-Smith

I would like to thank the committee for another great season. The role of the chairperson is sometimes very difficult but at the same time a rewarding role. People don’t realize how much work goes on behind the scenes to keep our game of hockey continuing. For a small community, Circular Head have great numbers for all our competitions and also have had great state representation over the years. We rely heavily on volunteers in the running of the competition and I would like to also thank them for helping to make it such a success. A big thank you also to those who volunteered to umpire and match manage each week.

Minkey and half field teams enjoyed their roster with many of the local schools involved. A big thank you to all of the coaches and parents who turned up Saturday mornings and braved the cold weather to ensure that our young children had fun playing hockey.

This year’s annual Junior Intra-State tournament was held in Hobart. It was fantastic to see many of our

Circular Head players being able to display their developing skills and play amongst the best in the state at their respective age levels.
