‘My brother left home hoping to buy some bread. On his return as he approached the doorstep, a sniper shot him in his leg. I saw my brother lying helplessly in a pool of blood.’

Sharing her story with us, the widow broke down and sobbed uncontrollably.

During my stay in Syria I began questioning why a nation would be willing to sacrifice so much, simply for regime change. A young man from Tabaka answered my question,

‘Whilst I was studying in Damascus, I started praying Salah and growing a beard due to my increasing love for the Sunnah. I was arrested, imprisoned and tortured for five years.’ The regime’s sustained assault on the fundamental right of every Muslim to practise Islam and the Sunnah was the last straw in this proud people’s patience.

The people of Syria are fixed on this path of sacrifice. Their sons, daughters, properties and lives are ready to be exchanged in order to preserve this gift of Iman which is so dear to them.

The above is an extract of a letter I wrote in April 2013, following a visit to a Syrian refugee camp.

I often think how many more stories like this will never be told and never be heard. How many of our widowed sisters and orphaned children, not just in Syria but across the Ummah today, have suffered like this in the shadows?

1434 Hijri (2012/13) has sadly seen another rise in the Muslim Ummah of suffering families fleeing war and poverty. Alhamdulillah, despite the challenges, Ummah Welfare Trust continues in its mission to search for and provide relief to the victims of these trials.

In the past year, the generous contributions of the Ummah have enabled the charity to reach out to over two million people across 21 countries, spending £12.6 million in the process.

May Allah shower His mercy upon the donors, the volunteers and the staff who continue to contribute so much in helping to wipe the tears of the orphans, the widows and the frail.

from spending in the Path of Allah

I ndeed in all Allah’s revelations, in the intellect, and amongst the experiences of all nations regardless of their beliefs, there is unanimity that becoming closer

to Allah, seeking His pleasure and being kind towards His creation are the greatest reasons for receiving goodness.

The bounties of Allah are never pursued, nor is the anger of Allah ever kept away, with anything better than His obedience and doing good to His creation.

- Ibn al Qayyim Rahimahullah

In the Hereafter

His charity is a shade for him on the day when there will be no shade

His reckoning on the Day of Judgement is lightened

His scale of good deeds becomes heavier

The crossing of the Sirat (a bridge over hellfire) is made easier

His rank in Paradise is elevated

In this Life

His wealth is purified

His body is purified

Illnesses and calamities are repelled

The difficulties of the poor and destitute are alleviated

His wealth receives barakah (blessings)

In a new phase, Ummah Welfare Trust is establishing a camp inside Syria to support widowed and

orphaned families. A unique camp, it will cater for every need of the widows and orphans.

Newly arrived families will be provided with mattresses, clothing, blankets, kitchen utensils and hygiene kits, and will be given freshly cooked food twice a day.

The camp will have a masjid, free schooling for children and segregated toilet facilities. Twenty water tankers, each with a capacity of 2 tonnes, will ensure there is a permanent supply of water.

A 50KV generator will also be installed, ensuring a constant electricity supply to tents, the masjid and the kitchen.

Ummah Welfare Trust asks you to donate generously for the running costs of this camp and help bring comfort to our widowed sisters and orphaned children.

You can give Zakah, Sadaqah and Lillah for this noble project.

The crisis in Syria is well into its third year. The violence has created 17,000 widows and 40,000 orphans.

PALESTINE

Cowardly attacks from the skies destroyed schools, water sources, hospitals,

masjids and homes. Much of the infrastructure that was rebuilt following bombings in 2009 was destroyed again.

Your donations allowed Ummah Welfare Trust to respond immediately to this round of violence. The charity provided medicines and disposable equipment to hospitals across Gaza, including Al Shifa hospital.

In November 2012, sustained bombings by occupiers on Gaza martyred over a hundred Palestinians and injured over a thousand.

630families received winter kits consisting of blankets and mattresses.

250families received survival kits consisting of a 200 litre water tanker and kitchen utensils.

250families received emergency food provisions.

Through the winter months into 2013, many affected families received emergency provisions:

OPPRESSION

They are those who have been evicted from their homes without right, only because they say, ‘Our Lord is Allah.’ Al-Qur’an - 22:40

Residing under an oppressive rule and victims of regular vigilantism by a majority-

Buddhist population, the Rohingya Muslims of Arakan have suffered greatly in the past century.

In June 2012, in another flashpoint of violence against Muslims in Burma, savage attacks perpetrated by mobs led to a terrible situation for the Rohingya. In a few bloody months, thousands of Muslims were killed and 125,000 were left displaced.

As tensions seemingly calmed, on 20th March 2013 in Meiktila city, Buddhist mobs began destroying the property, shops, masjids and houses of Muslims once again.

The situation across the country today remains tense. Thousands of Muslims have taken refuge in sports stadiums, schools and camps, many of which have been blockaded.

No man forsakes a Muslim when his rights are being violated or his honour is being belittled except that Allah will forsake him at a place in which he would love to have His help.

And no man helps a Muslim at a time when his honour is being belittled or his rights violated except that Allah will help him at a place in which he loves to have His help.

Ummah Welfare Trust has been working in Burma for 8 years. The charity:

Builds madrassahs, masjids and graveyards.

Sponsors hundreds of orphans.

Constructs homes.

Installs hand pumps.

Administers seasonal work, such as Iftaar provisions and Qurbani.

Supports two orphanages.

Through 2012 and the start of 2013, grants were administered in Arakan to 6,000 Rohingyan families who had been affected by the violence. In Meiktila, 300 affected families were provided with grants.

Cash grants, varying from £15 to £50, will continue to be distributed to newly-affected families through 2013 inshaAllah.

Ummah Welfare Trust also plans to construct shelters, toilets and hand pumps in the makeshift camps in Arakan. For Ramadhan, an Iftaar campaign for displaced Rohingyan families will be administered.

Islam entered Burma through Arakan sometime in the first century after Hijra. Tabi’oon (successors of the Companions) arriving for commerce invited people to Islam. In a few short years, the whole region embraced the religion.

Da’ees and Muslim merchants continued coming to the region and Islam flourished for many centuries. In 1430 AH, an Islamic state was established by the ruler Sulaiman Shah Rahimahullah.

Forty-eight Muslim rulers successively ruled Arakan and Islam’s dominance in the region endured for over 3 centuries.

In 1784, the region became occupied by Buddhists of neighbouring Burma and Arakan became one of the 14 provinces of the state. Today the state is called Myanmar.

HUNGER & DISPLACEMENT IN

In its past, Mali was a hub for knowledgeable ‘ulama and pious worshippers. Its abundant resources were used as Sadaqah for the poor Muslims of Africa.

T he cycle of chronic poverty and war continues to displace families across the African

continent. In early 2013, Mali became the latest victim.

Prolonged dry seasons followed by conflict and occupation led to a terrible situation for Muslims in this West African state.

Millions of Muslims today are displaced, hundreds of thousands of whom have fled through the country’s porous borders to neighbouring countries.

Ummah Welfare Trust, with an established base in Niger, shifted focus to the country’s western border, aiming to help some of the 50,000 Malian refugees who had fled here.

In the Ayorou refugee camp, situated close to the Mali border, Ummah Welfare Trust distributed food provisions to 500 newly-arrived families. Provisions included baby milk, rice and oil.

For Ramadhan, Ummah Welfare Trust will implement a large scale Iftaar programme, helping tens of thousands of refugees see through the blessed month.

Thousands of dispossessed refugees will also receive new clothing tailored to their cultural requirements.

May Allah keep strong ties between us and the poor Muslims of Africa. On the Day of Judgement, may He raise us with their likes. Ameen.

‘A time came upon us when none of us believed that they were more worthy of (keeping) the dinar and dirham than his Muslim brother; now a time has come where the dinar and dirham is more beloved to us than our Muslim brother.’

Whoever reads the Qur’an, learns it and acts in accordance with it, on the Day of Resurrection his parents will be given a crown to wear whose light will be like the light of the sun; and they will be given garments which surpass everything to be found in this world. They will ask, “Why have we been given this to wear?” It will be said, “Because your child learned the Qur’an.”

UmmahChildren Academy

Hafidh Asadullah is in the 9th class at the UCA. He comes from a small village in the Torland district of

Nowshera. He was just a year old when his father, Shah Pasand Khan, died.

Living in a mud-brick home and already impoverished, Asadullah’s family suffered greatly after the demise of their father.

Asadullah had an elder brother, Ihsanullah, who was disabled. Despite his frailty, the family’s desperation forced him to seek work.

Asadullah says, “My brother would work for a tailor, who would give him just a little money each day. The money was never enough, but what could we do? We had to suffer this way.”

For five years, Asadullah’s family lived a hand to mouth existence, barely surviving on the meagre earnings of a disabled sibling. The family slept hungry on many nights.

Alhamdulillah, as time passed, Ihsanullah learnt of a vacant post for a tailor at the UCA. He was encouraged

to apply and, following an interview, was taken on.

He later informed UCA staff about the plight of his family, who, upon surveying the family, enrolled Asadullah.

Alhamdulillah, at the UCA Asadullah flourished and within a short time memorised the whole Qur’an.

May the Book of Allah – clear and uncorrupted – be a means of honour for the parents of Asadullah. Ameen.

Seek help amongst your weak ones, for you are only given provision and help because of the weak amongst you.

- Sunan Abi Dawud

Ummah Welfare Trust is appealing for funds to build a new rehabilitation centre for disabled people

in Pakistan.

The charity’s current centre in Rawalpindi caters for 57 children and adults with special needs. With your help, the new centre will provide full-time care to 250 disabled children and adults.

Hashir Hussain

Hashir was born with an abscess in his lower back. Born into an impoverished family, he lived with this painful swelling through the early stages of his life.

Though the family could not afford to pay for an operation to have the abscess removed, it was difficult for Hashir’s father, Ashiq, to see his only son in such pain. He borrowed money therefore to pay for an operation.

The abscess was removed but Hashir’s lower limbs were left paralysed. After the operation, Hashir could not move his feet even slightly.

Alhamdulillah, disability and poverty did not prevent Hashir’s parents from trying to further his education. In December 2012, Hashir was brought to the Ummah Centre for the Disabled by his parents.

Hashir was enrolled immediately and now boards at the centre. May Allah preserve him. Hashir is smart, talkative and has excellent conduct. He reads the Qur’an daily and receives continued support and rehabilitation.

May Allah give us the opportunity to support more children across the Ummah like young Hashir. Ameen.

EducationEducation is a basic objective for the development of any society. knowledge imparted through education widens a man’s horizons and renders his aspirations lofty.

T he overriding necessity for mankind is to know that they are slaves of their Creator, Allah ‘azza wajjal; and to know His Messenger Muhammad

Sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam and that which he brought.

There is neither a path to success nor ability to know good from evil except through this knowledge. No matter how urgent a need or great a necessity, the need for one to know this is far above it.

If success is dependent upon this knowledge, then it is incumbent upon every person who loves salvation for himself to learn Islam and its affairs. Therein lies happiness and success.

Da’wah centre in the PhilippinesOn the Mindanao Island in the southern Philippines, Ummah Welfare Trust has contributed towards the construction of a two-storey da’wah and education centre for children and adults.

A first of its kind in the region, the centre provides free training, courses and Islamic literature to impoverished families.

This is a project that Ummah Welfare Trust hopes will become the foundation for reviving the love of Islam in the Philippines.

Madrassah in Haiti Ummah Welfare Trust has helped complete the construction of one of the first Islamic schools in Haiti. Alhamdulillah, a large building, it is situated in the mountainous area of the Miragoane district.

3,000 children are provided with free modern and Islamic education. The Qur’an, Arabic, fiqh and ahaadith are taught in a structured manner.

From the centre, relief and seasonal Islamic projects are also administered in the surrounding impoverished areas.

New school in Gaza On 750 square meters of land in Nuseirat, Ummah Welfare Trust is constructing the As-Suffa school.

This school will provide free modern and Islamic education to 300 poor children in the Gaza strip, ensuring that they receive the spiritual, emotional and intellectual support they deserve.

Students will also enrol onto the Tahfeedhul Qur’an course. Learning several chapters a year, every child will become a Hafidh of the Qur’an bi ‘ithnillah.

Supporting schools in MalawiCenturies-long missionary work has decimated any standing that Islam once had in Malawi. Even in Muslim-majority state schools today, the teaching of the Bible is mandatory.

Ummah Welfare Trust, working at the grassroots, is funding the running of five Islamic schools in Mangochi, southern Malawi. These provide free education to 1,000 children.

Though in its infancy, the work in Malawi is one that reflects Ummah Welfare Trust’s longer-term ambitions of planting the seeds of Imaan in the next generation of Muslims.

Taking care of the poor in the winter and protecting them from the cold is a great deed. Safwan bin Salim RadiAllahu ‘anhu went out on a cold night in Madinah near the mosque, and he saw a man with little clothing on. So, he took off his coat and

covered him up with it.

Someone living in Sham saw in a dream that Safwan bin Salim had entered Paradise with a shirt he had made. So he went to Madinah and said, ‘Show me where Safwan is.’ When he found him, he related to him the dream.

- Ibn Rajab al-Hanbali Rahimahullah

Alhamdulillah, through your donations, Ummah Welfare Trust implemented its largest ever winter relief operation for 2012 - 2013. Over 40,000 families, mired in war and chronic poverty, received support this winter.

Given the different needs on the ground, provisions varied from country to country. In Syria and Afghanistan, Islamic items, such as Qur’ans, were also provided with the clothing and blankets.

In Gaza, many families were dispossessed following the Israeli bombardments in November. Ummah Welfare Trust supplied mattresses here along with its winter provisions.

We ask Allah to make our help for the Ummah continuous; and not confined to any situation or season. Ameen

Over half a million Muslims benefitted from last year’s Qurbani programme.

In 2012, the Qurbani project was rendered in 18 countries across Africa, Asia and the Middle East. A total of 4,348 large animals and 5,096 small animals were sacrificed.

Thousands of poor Muslim families in Palestine, Syria and Iraq received Udhiyah meat. Families in these blessed regions have suffered greatly but their standing with Allah, Glory be to Him, is great. Ummah Welfare Trust asks Allah to accept its efforts in these areas.

In Pakistan, 3,450 animals were sacrificed for the long-standing flood victims of Sindh, Khyber

Pakhtunkhwa and Baluchistan. While from Pakistan, the Udhiyah meat of over 1,000 animals was trucked to poverty-stricken families in Afghanistan and Kashmir.

Nearly 2,000 cows were sacrificed across India. Poor families in Sunderban and families suffering in the on-going violence in Assam received fresh meat. In Burma, 280 large cows were sacrificed; the meat of many of these animals was transported to suffering Muslims in the state of Arakan.

Udhiyah meat was also enjoyed across the African continent in Gambia, Kenya, Malawi, Senegal, Somalia and Sudan.

Ummah Welfare Trust has 2 bank accounts to separate between the donors’ money and the administration money.

Ummah Welfare Trust works under the guidance of scholars who ensure that the charity's role as a trustee is always fulfilled. Knowing that we are all ultimately accountable to the Almighty, the charity strives to maintain transparency and accountability.

All donated money arrives into this account. Funds here are monitored and reviewed by scholars who ensure the conditions of Zakah, Sadaqah and Lillah are met. Not a single penny from this account is removed for administration, fundraising or anything else.

W e ask Allah to accept the generosity of Ummah Welfare Trust’s donors.

May their Sadaqah be a means of forgiveness, may it elevate their rank and may it be a shade for them on the Day of Judgement.

We ask Allah, Lord of the Glorious Throne, to ease the affairs of the Muslim Ummah and to restore its honour and high aspirations. We

ask Him, who hears the cries of His slaves, for His Assistance; for indeed He is the one who brings forth and He is the one who withholds.

And finally we ask Allah, the Most Merciful, to accept our meagre efforts - for He is Self-sufficient and we are in need of Him; and to continue using us to aid the Ummah of the Leader of Mankind, Muhammad Mustafa SallAllahu ‘alaihi wasallam.
