Natural Attractions And Things To Do In The St. Marys Area

Natural Attractions And Things To Do In The St. Marys Area

Austin Dam, AustinBuilt in 1909 to supply water to a nearby paper mill, the dam

was the largest concrete dam in Pennsylvania holding 800 million gallons of water. The dam catastrophically failed in 1911, killing at least 90 people and causing $14 million in damages. See the remains of the structure dramatically shifted by the floodwaters. Failure of this dam led to present-day federal and state regulations.

Biking and HikingAvailable at Clarion River Rails to Trails, miles of biking and

walking.CanoeingVisit McClain's Lazy River Rentals and enjoy a trip on the area's

scenic waterways.East Branch DamAbout ½ hour and just north of Johnsonburg off of Route 219, visit

East Branch Dam with its 1,370-acre lake formed as part of a flood-control project for the Clarion River. The 6-mile lake is stocked with trout, bass, walleye and perch for fishing. This dam is operated by the Army Corp of Engineers as flood control for the Pittsburgh area, and ultimately, the Mississippi River.

Elk Herd WatchOver 700 elk roam over an area of about 225 square miles in the

Winslow Hill area. They are descendents of elk re-introduced into the area from Yellowstone National Park around the turn of the cen-tury. A mature bull weighs between 700-1,000 pounds and stands 55 inches high at the shoulder. The best time to see them is early morning or late afternoon close to dark.

Fisherman’s ParadiseNear Coudersport on Route 6 east of town are Fisherman’s

Paradise, a private lake and hatchery grounds stocked with trout. Fishing is available for a fee and a catch is just about a sure thing.

GolfSt Marys - Bavarian Hills and The Leaning Pines. Ridgway

- Laurel Mill Golf Course, Brockway - Scottish Heights and Owens- Brockway Glass Golf Course. Emporium – Emporium Country Club. DuBois – DuBois Country Club and Treasure Lake. Kane - Kane Country Club.

Kinzua BridgeAbout an hour north on

Route 6 near Mt. Jewett, visit what is left of the Kinzua Bridge. Until July 2003 when damaging storms came through the area, the Kinzua Bridge was one of the high-est operating railroad trestles in the country at 301 feet high. Rides were given on a steam excursion train from Kane to Marienville across the trestle.

Kinzua DamContinue your travel to the scenic drive between Kane

and Warren along Route 321 and through the Red Bridge area to view the huge Allegheny Reservoir,

which stretches into New York. Much of the area is w i t h i n the Allegheny National Forest, supplying black c h e r r y

and other hardwoods to wood processors in the United States, Europe and Japan.

Kinzua Beach offers lake swimming. Short hiking trails are a v a i l a b l e

at Jakes Rocks and s p e c t a c u -lar views of the lake can be seen at Big Bend Lookout.

Kane Depot is a beautifully restored late 1800’s train station. It is home to local Kane and railroad memorabilia. Art Works at the Depot is also located here. More than twenty local artists represent media ranging from oil paints, water, pencil, photography, jewelry, fine wood products (carved locally), to sculptures. The depot is open late spring through Christmas.

General Thomas L. Kane Memorial Chapel - The chapel houses historical artifacts of General Kane, who was appointed by his good friend President Grant to lead the Bucktail Regiment in the Civil War, and items used by for-mer Presidents of the United States and other Statesmen. Genealogy records are often looked up at the church through the Brigham Young University.

Kane Manor Country Inn – One of the original homes of the Kane family is under restoration and located on a 10 scenic acres with trails to the forest. Currently serves as a Bed and Breakfast.

Texas Hot Lunch - The Texas Hot Lunch is a four generation restaurant and Kane landmark since 1919. This restaurant is noted for their famous “Texas Hots” or hotdogs with sauce. When former residents of Kane come back to visit, they can usually be found visiting at the Texas Hot Lunch. The original building was located on Fraley Street and rolled on logs to the current location on Field Street.

Flickerwood Wine Cellars and Lounge - Established in May 2000, it is the only winery in McKean County. The wine lounge was open in spring 2007 and hosts dinners, concerts and other events throughout the year. After perus-ing through the gift shop, sample some wine and enjoy a tour of the winery. Each year the winery hosts a spring and fall festival with music, vendors, food and wine.

Evergreen Park is a popular place during the spring and summer months. The 18 acre park, located next to the Central Business District in Kane, includes two pavilions, bathroom facilities, tennis, volleyball, and basketball courts. The Evergreen Enchanted Playground is a large jungle gym structure enjoyed by children of all ages. During nice weather, families can be found picnicking, teens playing ball and children swinging, sliding and having fun.

Bell’s Meat and Poultry - This quaint local store is a must visit on your trip to Kane. Bell’s specializes in their variety of sausages, meats, cheeses, fresh produce and their famous leek dip. Be sure to bring a cooler, so that you can stock your freezer until your next visit.

Civil War Memorial - The Civil War Memorial was originally located at Evergreen Park. It honors all the area men who served or gave their life dur-ing the Civil War. This Civil War Memorial was purchased by Kane and the surrounding communities. This memorial was moved to Mt. Tabor Cemetery's main entrance, this area is reserved for all veterans.
