That if you are a renter, isn't it reasonableand o nl y f ai r t o g iv e r ig ht of w ay t o t heproperty owners in a matter of this kind,as, after all, t h ey a re ap t t o b e m or e permanent in their l ocal abode , an d won'tyou be impressed by the fact that very, very fe . of those who cou ld really savet ax es , i. e ., if everything th e merger leade rs c la im wer e 1 00% true, are on theMerger Petition, as such resid'ints are invariably and indignantly against the proposal.

That there does not seem to be any senseor reason for us to pay to perh o u ~ e h o l d in the way of annual an d perel1lual sewer r en ta ls t o t he Towns hi p f orthe use of sewers which the citizens of theBorough paid fo r long ago? Isn't this likepay ing rent to an out side l and lord fo r theprivilege of occupying your own home?

That the excellent spirit which producessuch things as our Fourth of July Celebration, the Mardi Gras, our supremacy insports, our alertness to all public questions,ou r success in every civic thing we undertake, is a direct fruit of local sovereignty, inasmuch as no p lac e in the Townsh ip c ansubmit anything l ik e a similar record.

That we should hardly cry about ou r comparatively small debt when eve ry dol la rwe owe was authorized by us after a fulldiscussion of the facts . and t ha t ift h ere a re any tax inequities, as t h ere maybe in th e case of widows and other distress, official consideration can be moreeasily assured at home, where we areknown to each other.

That t he much discussed School quest ioncould be sett led in a few hours if it wcreapproached intelligently, and with goodwill, as the total numbcr of pupils o n t heSouth Sidc is on Iy 77 (all ages) and whyshould we b re ak u p a self-governing Borough merely to increasc the convenienceof t hi s v cr y sma ll group when t h ere a reseveral other and more constructive waysto accomplish it?

That the essence of American procedureis to have "the neighborhood as the basisof government," an established and wellproven fact t o whi ch t he mer ge r leadersagree completely, but t hey s ay it "won'twork, " in tot al d is rega rd of th e excellentmanner in which it has "worked" for twofull generations.

And so a fair question--.when you signedyour name to the Merger Petition did yougive careful thought to your act---and didyou accord proper consideration to anyof the following facts?

    If a man deceives yOll once,Shame on h im!If a man deceives you twice,Shame on you !

Thetc arc othCl' things to say, but that's e nough to encou rage youto s tart the contemplat ion which will result in a s qu ar e d ea l f oryout home town. Many of your friends have removed their namesfrom thc Petition. They did not understand th e real facts in thef irst case and were hurried into s igning t he t hi ng w it ho ut p ro pe rthought. Possibly that was the case wit h you? At any ra te , thinki t ove r. You d o n ot wan t to do yourself no r you r town an injury,To des troy wha t has been 40 years in th e building is a hazardousventure which prudent pcople will approach most cautiously andthey will necd more than mere claims of alleged economy beforethey sanction any such uncertainty.

T ha t i f instead of conducting o ur o wnaffairs, as we have d on e f or 4 0 years, thatall decisions woul d b e m ad e f or us, an daU our moneys disbursed, by a board of14 or 15 commissioners, on which we mightno t have any d ire ct r ep re sent at ion, and,at the most, no t more than two votes. Dowe desire to rep eat th e grossly unsatisfactory experience which was ou r portionwhen we were in the Township years ago,an d which made us apply t o t he C ou rt f orrescue and the r igh t to govern ourselves? What kind of logic would that be, anyhow?

That all ou r Borough facilities, includingou r unique p layground, wou ld be thrownopen to the popula tion of the ent ire T owns hip , a s we would then be part of theTownship and we could claim no specialreservations. That in all elections involving Local Options (which are bound to increase in viewof obvious legislative trends) the decisionsof t h e Townsh ip at l arge wou ld governthe condi t ions which would exist here, even if our particular neighborhood wereopposed to th e project. That the opportuni ty will be gone foreverto havethe local swimming pool for whichour y ou th h as b ee n c lamo ri ng f or y ea rsand which now seems to be possible at acos t we wil l not feel. If you th ink for amoment, you wil l see why we can have apoo l a s a Borough, b ut i t will be impossib le i f we become part of the Township.

That if your pl'esent asscssment is $1500or less, there can be no "savings" even ifyoUt' assessment remains the same.

That the "savings" which are claimedwould quickly turn in to extra taxes if theTownship revised our assessments by onlya t hi rd . L as t week's advertisement provedLOWER MER IO N' S ASSESSMENTBASIS IS 100 P ER CEN T HIGHERTHAN OURS. And n ob od y c an d en ythat the first thing which will occur, if weare forced o n t he Township, will be a review and a definite readjustment of all ou rassessments. Natu ra ll y , ou r new bosseswill start with a new inventory and whyshould theybe tolel'3nt of ou r values whenwe have insisted by process of law upontheil taking us ovet? What a pretty messindeed we might be invi t ing for ourselves? In fact, there is no "might" about it, forwe would most certainly get i t in thc neck,as Mr. Logan 's official survey shows.

There is an easy way to withdraw your approval if you havegiven it without proper reflection. Can any of the Committeefor further information. The time is short-we anmust hurryto save the day and the home-place which has served us so exceedingly well.
