Michele’s NoteSeptember 2015 marks the 4th
annual Global World Alzheimer’sMonth. The fight againstAlzheimer’s disease is a cause ofgreat importance to us. Last year,Belmont Village raised over$47,000 in our communities todonate to the Alzheimer’sAssociation.
Today, 5.3 million Americansare living with Alzheimer’sdisease, including an estimated200,000 under the age of 65.Nearly 2/3 of those with thedisease are women. By 2050, upto 16 million will have thedisease. Someone in the USdevelops Alzheimer’s every 67seconds. By 2050 someone in theUS will develop the disease every33 seconds.
Most people living withAlzheimer’s are not aware oftheir diagnosis—or have notbeen diagnosed at all. Less thanhalf of seniors diagnosed withAlzheimer’s disease or theircaregivers are aware of thediagnosis, compared with 90% ormore of those diagnosed withcancer and other diseases.
Alzheimer’s disease is one ofthe costliest chronic diseases inthe nation. In 2015 the directcosts to American society of caringfor those with Alzheimer’s willtotal an estimated 226 billion,
with half of the costs borne byMedicare.
Nearly 1 in every 5 Medicaredollars is spent on people withAlzheimer’s and other relateddementia. In 2050, it will be 1 inevery 3 dollars.
The average per-personMedicare spending for those withAlzheimer’s/dementia is 3x higherthan average spending per personacross all other seniors and 19xhigher for Medicaid.
Alzheimer’s is the 6th leadingcause of death in the countryand the only cause of death inthe top 10 that cannot beprevented or cured. Althoughdeaths from other causes havedecreased significantly, recordsindicate that deaths fromAlzheimer’s have increasedsignificantly—71% between 2000and 2013.
Alzheimer’s takes adevastating toll on caregivers.Nearly 60% of Alzheimer’s anddementia caregivers rate theemotional stress of caregiving ashigh or very high; about 40%suffer from depression. Due to thephysical and emotional toll ofcaregiving, caregivers had 9.7billion in additional health carecosts of their own in 2014.
Please join us on Sept. 19 forour Walk to End Alzheimer’sdisease.

Goodbye From Carolyn“Some people come into our lives
and swiftly go, some stay for awhile, and leave footprints on our heartsand we are never the same.”
Thank you for the footprints.Health and happiness to all. Love,Carolyn Zuelke
On Sound FootingYour feet are pretty small,
considering they have to supportthe entire height and weight ofyour body. But they can cause bigproblems. So pay some attentionto your feet.
“Feet don’t get any respect,”says Dr. Marian T. Hannan, whostudies foot disorders at theInstitute for Aging Research atHebrew SeniorLife. “They’re sortof the Rodney Dangerfield of thehuman body.”
Each step you take involves aremarkably intricate network ofbones, muscles, tendons andligaments. That complexity—combined with all the weight theycarry—accounts for why feet canbe so prone to problems, including bone fractures, arthritisand plantar fasciitis, a swelling ofthe thick band of tissue that runsalong the bottom of the foot.
If left untreated, foot problemsmay worsen. Eventually, the paincould interfere with your ability todo even the most basic things likewalking up stairs or down thestreet. If pain alters the way youwalk, it can lead to pain in yourknees, hips and back as well. These problems can multiply, limiting your activity and affectingyour quality of life.
Several things can contribute tofoot pain or numbness. Sportsand physical activity can causeyour feet to hurt or becomenumb. Going too far, too fast or
not warming up properly beforeexercise can set you up for painfulor numbing injuries.
Excess weight puts extra stresson your feet. Poorly fitting shoesand other footwear are commoncauses of foot problems as well.
Health problems can also affectthe feet. Lack of feeling in yourfeet could be a sign of a seriousillness, such as diabetes or a nervedisorder. See your health careprovider if you haveunusual numbness in your feet orfoot pain that is severe, comes onsuddenly, or doesn’t improve withsimple measures such as rest orover-the-counter painmedications.
“The good news is that mostfoot disorders are either treatableor modifiable,” Hannan says. “Thefirst thing that you can do isnotice and keep track of it to see ifthere’s a pattern to it.” Once youfigure out when you feel pain ornumbness, she explains, talk to anexpert who can help.
How you walk and move affectsyour feet. Part of that is inherited.“Not only do our feet look likeour parents’ but we also walk likeour parents,” Hannan says. Butyou can modify your gait—eitherwith training or by changing shoesor using shoe inserts or pads.
You can help keep your feethealthy by wearing comfortable,well-fitting shoes. Wash your feetregularly (especially between yourtoes), wear clean socks and try torotate your shoes
and give them time to air out.“The more you exercise yourfeet, the better the blood flow isto the feet, and that’s importantfor general foot health,” Hannansays.Walking is a great way toexercise your feet. You can alsotry specific foot exercises. Sitdown and rotate your ankles inone direction, then the other. Inbare feet, sit in a chair and curlyour toes, then spread them out. This helps stretch and strengthenyour feet to help you balance.Seeing what someone’s footlooks like is incrediblyinformative, Hannan says. “Ithink we’re going to be seeing alot more health care providerspaying attention to the feet,” shepredicts.
Tip of the Month“Take care of your body. It’s
the only place you have to live.”-Jim Rohn
