OUR SUSTAINABLE BUSINESS 2016

WelcomeA sustainable approach to creating value.

In 2016, our 1-2-3 strategy that had focused our teams on improving business performance started to bear fruit. The emphasis has been on delivery on time with quality and safety.

Despite a year of political uncertainty, we had a number of successes; we turned our financial performance around; the Employee Engagement Survey showed that our people were more satisfied than ever before; and we were recognised to be leaders in diversity and social value.

The environmental focus was expanded through ESOS and investing in additional

resource for energy management. Reporting systems were improved for various parts of our business to support sound future business decisions.

Our 2016 success is a result of a long-term view of doing business, integrated with the three pillars of sustainability. This approach will ensure a stable business model for the years to come.

Our Health & SafetySafety Through Everyone’s Participation.

To achieve zero harm and be a positive influence on the health of our people, H&S is a core focus of our business.

STEP UP underpins our approach and 81% of our workforce “feel empowered to challenge unsafe behaviours”.

Nevertheless, continuous improvement is key, so we continue to combine robust procedures with task briefings, supervisor engagement and internal HSE advisory inspections and audits to engage our people, always emphasising their participation and the feedback loop.

Following 2015’s success of the STEP UP training, it was expanded to involve clients’ teams where requested and in the year we had 1,231 attendees completing the training.

Overall, we maintained high H&S performance data compared to our peers, whilst also expanding our focus on wellbeing through new Occupational Health initiatives.

Take a Break for Safety

This annual event is now well established within our business, adopted internationally and by our peers. For the fifth year in a row, all of our projects, contracts and offices took a joint break for H&S on 27 September.

The 2016 edition had a dust management focus for our construction sites, whilst other projects and offices focused on health and wellbeing.

Occupational Health

We expanded our wellbeing initiatives through a series of activities for mental health, including workshops, self-help leaflets and piloting a first aider programme.

On our sites, we continue to mandate Health Risk Management plans and that our subcontractors utilise SEQOHS accredited health services. Random drug and alcohol tests are carried out to manage the risks associated and provide appropriate support.

Mental Health First Aid Pilot We began a journey to look at how we could create a more proactive approach to mental health and wellbeing responding to team feedback.

We developed and piloted a Mental Health First Aiders course. During the two day course our attendees learned how to spot the signs of mental illness, how to react and how to point people in the right direction for more advice.

Feedback from the pilot led to a working group being set up to lead our approach. The focus is on education and raising awareness, to enable a culture where employees feel comfortable to talk about mental health and have the right resources to support them.

To complement the Mental Health First Aiders scheme, we also organised four stress management workshops, set up an Employee Assistance Programme, launched electronic self-help leaflets and signed up to the Time-to-Change pledge.

“Grateful to have had the opportunity to understand more about mental health

as well as understand how to and how much help can be given.”

Our PeopleOur people are the driver of our business’ success.

We put our heart into creating workplaces that stimulate personal development, career progression and personal wellbeing, to help retain and attract the best talent.

Supported by the VINCI Academy, we provide every individual with the opportunity to have a tailored training plan to learn and grow, whilst continuing to increase the training hours provided.

We invested £359,000 into upskilling supervisors and senior managers through ‘Orchestra’ and ‘PM+’ – our works and project management programmes developed to enhance efficient decision-making, reduce defects and support our teams to deliver on our 1-2-3 strategy.

Fairness, Inclusion and Respect was even higher on our agenda as we engaged our teams and senior management to achieve Leaders in Diversity status.

Our annual Employee Engagement Survey showed that our employees feel more satisfied working with us, with scores reaching an all-time high of 81%, which compares favourably with the industry benchmark of 78%.

Attract Talent

Recognising the skill shortage in our industry, we actively seek alternative routes to the talent pool. As examples we work closely with the Armed Forces Corporate Covenant and the Disability Confident Scheme.

To attract young talent we offer a diverse range of work placements, graduate schemes and apprenticeships. Last year we enrolled 14 new members to our Technical Apprenticeship Programme.

FIR

Gaining the Leaders in Diversity (LiD) accreditation was a milestone achievement. It was enabled through the reinforced engagement of our senior team and roll out of initiatives ranging from e-learning and toolkits to workshops and events.

This FIR engagement has been recognised by both the Construction Investing in Talent and Employee Engagement Awards.

As the first LiD accredited national construction company: “VINCI Construction UK has set an example to the rest of the construction industry.

I know VINCI has been working hard and you have done it the right way. It was never a flash in the pan approach that you took. You took a painstaking ‘inch by inch and yard by yard’ approach to improvement.”

The 19 team members that enrolled to the Gold DofE Award in Business

Supporting our People To support our young talent to be the best they can be, we promote the Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award in Business to anyone younger than 25.

In September, 19 team members enrolled on the DofE award. Their journey started with a residential in Stratford-upon-Avon, introducing them to ‘what they have let themselves in for’, including a 10 km walk to prepare for their coming expedition.

The 18-month programme is non-competitive and carried out alongside normal work duties. The award is achieved by completing a personal programme of activities within five specific modules:

• Residential - staying and working away as part of a team

• Skills - developing talents or trying something new

• Physical - becoming fitter through fitness activities

• Volunteering - helping someone, our community or the environment

• Expedition - planning, training for and completing an adventurous journey

The activities are often tailored to use the resources and expertise of our business, to help the participants grow as team members, leaders and individuals.

“The business version of the Duke of Edinburgh Award is a great route

for us to develop our young people as it provides invaluable skills in terms of problem solving,

collaboration, and leadership.”Jo Mercer, Head of Learning & Development, VINCI Construction UK

SOCIAL Our People

Our CommunitiesDelivering social value that makes a difference.

Through the projects we run, the people we employ and the initiatives we engage in, we strive to deliver true social value to our communities.

We engage to promote local employability and tackle skill-shortages, working with the Job Centre Plus and colleges. We engaged with The College of Haringey, Enfield and North East London and at Chase Farm Hospital. Their students had on-site training, whilst Barking and Dagenham College students carried out a community hub refurb with us.

The children’s favourite ‘Ivor Goodsite’ regularly visits our sites and local schools to talk about safe construction behaviours, and at Victoria Station Upgrade his female counterpart ‘Honor Goodsite’ spent a day on site with the children.

The Considerate Constructors Scheme assesses our sites to ensure that our works are carried out with consideration to those who may be affected.

Most achieve high audit scores, such as Whitechapel Station Upgrade scoring an excellent 45/50.

SOCIAL Our Communities

Stand Out Make a Difference

In our business, every employee is given a day of paid leave per year to contribute to the community. Working with our communities and customers, our people get involved in initiatives as wide ranging as canal cleaning, refurbishments and fundraising, to helping train a hearing dog.

Charitable PartnershipsWe are the first company to have strategic partnerships with the Construction Youth Trust, Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and Prince’s Trust, whilst also supporting the Wildlife Trust. These partnerships enable us to engage with local communities, create opportunities for young people to enter our industry and provide employees with rewarding development opportunities, in a way that can create a sustainable impact long-term.

VINCI FoundationThe VINCI UK Foundation is established to promote social cohesion, fight exclusion and isolation in the UK by combining the skills of our employees with financial assistance.

On a global scale, the VINCI Foundation annually supports 200 projects, involving one to four sponsoring employees per project, whilst providing €2.5 million in grants.

In the UK 19 projects were granted £166,240 last year.

Peabody & VINCI Facilities recognised with BIFM’s Societal Impact Award

BIFM Award for Societal Impact Impressing the judges with an original concept and plan for the future, our ‘Reading from the Start’ (RftS) was recognised with the BIFM Award for Societal Impact.

RftS started in 2013 as VINCI Facilities entered into a 10-year contract to provide FM services to Peabody’s housing estates across London. It was soon the largest single social initiative undertaken by our business, investing funds over three years into developing an early intervention literacy programme.

Through RftS, young disadvantaged children develop social and literacy skills to start school on a level playing field. The programme has already touched the lives of more than 400 children and 320 parents across three Peabody Estates in Hackney, Tower Hamlets and Islington.

The award recognises exceptional benefit to society created and delivered through excellent facilities management practice; something that VINCI Facilities champions not only through RftS, but also through social value engagement at industry level, breaking new ground with Social Value UK as their first FM member.

“Winning this prestigious award demonstrates how we collaborate, to not only create a long lasting legacy and

benefit children and families at a number of Peabody estates, but set a benchmark to inspire other FM

providers and clients to deliver social value.”Josephine O’Connor, Business and Community Investment Manager, VINCI Facilities

Our Supply ChainCollaboration for sustainable success.

Building strong partnerships and commitment to continuous improvement, capturing innovation and sustainable development, our strategy is designed to encourage openness, trust and collaboration. We have created a set of relationship guidelines to ensure that these aspirations underpin the way we work with our supply chain.

Whilst we have strategic partnerships with large national suppliers, we also ensure that we engage with local suppliers and SMEs.

With 73% of our suppliers falling into the SME category, we recognise the importance of support not only in terms of delivering training through our Academy e-learning modules, but also financially, which is why we are signed up to the Prompt Payment Code.

We worked to develop a refined strategy to tackle Modern Slavery, as we recognise that with our sister companies we are in a better position to confront this wider industry issue.

SOCIAL Our Supply Chain

Process and SystemsWith the launch of iPortal Version 2 reporting has become more efficient and easier to use, providing our teams with better quality statistics to help decision making, with all information relating to our supply chain held in one place.

This allows us to select sustainable suppliers and identify areas where we can support them.

Developing formal trading arrangements with key manufacturers has increased earlier supplier involvement, delivering efficient solutions and increasing direct procurement.

Supply Chain Sustainability School

As partners of this multi-award winning initiative, we work with other contractors to raise the sustainability bar in our industries. Through sharing our knowledge and expertise, we help the School to develop training and workshops for our suppliers to use freely.

FIR ToolkitSadly, discrimination is still an occurring issue in our industries. We recognise that promoting a culture of Fairness, Inclusion and Respect (FIR) brings many business benefits to the companies that work to achieve it.

Within the built environment, we need to embrace this in order to attract, train and retain the skills and talent that we need to deliver our works.

To truly help embed a culture of FIR within our industries and our supply chains,

VINCI Construction UK actively participated in the Supply Chain Sustainability School’s special interest group on this topic.

Throughout 2016, we devoted time and expertise from our team’s experts in HR and Supply Chain Management to support the group that set out to develop free training for our suppliers to use.

The results include a guiding document, e-learning, toolbox talks and videos. All now available for any supplier to use, free of charge, on the School’s website: http://www.supplychainschool.co.uk/FIR/

SOCIAL Our Supply Chain

Our EnvironmentRecognising that without the environment,

we’d have nowhere to operate.

Being in a traditionally resource consuming industry, we do our best to mitigate any environmental risks and reduce our negative impact, to support a better environment for future generations.

To do this, we have to fully understand our impact, which is where the concept of ‘big data’ is starting to play an increasingly important role. So in 2016 we invested to further improve our HSE Reporting System - Footprint.

The improvements include more user friendly data entry forms and better dashboards. Our Footprint system provides good quality environmental data, annually audited by KPMG on behalf of VINCI SA.

Overall, this system already provides good quality environmental data.Nevertheless, there is always room for improvement.

Following the mandated Energy Saving Opportunity Scheme (ESOS) in 2015, we focused 2016’s efforts into developing a robust strategy to ensure that we capture estimated savings of £426,000 and ensure this is embedded in our business.

Energy & CarbonThe recommendations were of the ESOS audits consolidated into a strategy building on five key areas:• Early grid connection to reduce reliance of red diesel• Site accommodation improvements• Site plan and equipment innovation• More efficient monitoring and targeting in our static buildings• Reduction of Mobile Repair Technician fleet’s fuel consumption

An additional resource, a Group Energy Manager, was employed to implement this strategy and promote further energy saving practices.

WasteWe recognise that by thinking differently about waste we can use resources more efficiently and reduce negative impact. For example, our Olympic Stadium team purchase upcycled postal bikes for journeys around this large site.

The Filton Bank site reduced the transport of hazardous waste and transports significantly through an innovative incineration approach to Japanese knotweed. Two of our student accommodation projects reduced site generated waste by using bathroom pods manufactured off-site.

WaterWith the water market deregulation coming into play in 2017, we undertook work to ensure we are ready for this change.

Our Footprint system already provides quality data and distinguishes between potable and non-potable sources. Nevertheless, within the Footprint improvement project, further areas of improvement were mapped.

On site and in our offices, good water management practices continued to be promoted. For example, our Ealing Broadway site office installed rain water harvesting.

BiodiversityEngaging with the BIG Biodiversity Challenge, our sites and offices undertook various initiatives to enhance biodiversity. For example, our Ealing Broadway Station site cut waste and improved biodiversity through reusing leftover plastic drainage pipes and wood pallets to make vegetable planters.

The three-year-old beehives at Welsh Government’s office in Aberystwyth had a great yield and the proceedings of the honey sale was donated to charity.

New reference period for data: Oct 2015 – Sep 2016, audited by KPMG. Waste previous normalised to £100K, now £1M in line with industry reporting standards.

Team and hospital users celebrating Environmental Week at Coventry Hospital

ENVIRONMENT Our Environment

Environment Week at Coventry HospitalAt Coventry University Hospital our project team engaged with the hospital staff and its users in a fun and interactive way, organising a ‘VINCI Environmental Week’.

During the week our team and volunteers participated in a wide range of initiatives, including a re-invigoration of the communal garden on the hospital grounds to enable the children from the hospital wards to use and enjoy that space.

The team gave talks to the children each morning on subjects close to their hearts. The subjects have ranged from fishing to falconry, whilst the on-site environment talks explained what you can spot on the hospital grounds.

An Environmental Week poster competition has been held and two happy children will receive Tablets for their winning contribution. To the three wards from which children took part, VINCI Facilities is donating £500 each.

Our MaterialsProcurement to promote a circular

and sustainable economy.

As part of constructing and maintaining our built environments and infrastructure, material usage is inevitable, so we procure, use and dispose materials sustainably.

In 2016, we made changes to our supply chain processes and systems to deliver efficient solutions and increased direct procurement. By taking materials out of the manufacturing purchasing agreements, direct control of material packages has provided better transparency, reducing avoidable waste, defects and delivery times, whilst realising cost savings.

On BREEAM sites, our Assessors offer technical support to ensure we purchase materials with best available environmental certifications for building elements and insulation, to achieve maximum credits in these areas.

To support a circular economy, we recognised that in terms of materials, we can’t only think about what we procure, but also must to consider what we do with it afterwards.

Reuse of Material through Local CollegeAfter dismantling a temporary platform early last summer, Taylor Woodrow’s Hayes and Harlington Station site team found themselves having 2.5 tonnes of timber to dispose of.

Instead of considering this as waste, our team thought about how this material could serve another purpose. The team suggested donating it to an organisation that supports young people working to obtain skills necessary to join our industry.

In the search for a local carpentry or joinery school, Feltham Skills and Logistic Centre was found. As part of West Thames College London, the Feltham Skills and Logistics Centre offers a range of trade courses in West London. About 650 students study at the Skills and Logistics Centre to gain the practical skills needed for careers in Motor Vehicle Mechanics, Engineering, Catering, Logistics or Construction trades (Plumbing, Painting & Decorating, Electrical Installation and Carpentry).

The centre was delighted to take on-board the timber donation, worth £2,265. It is now being used for the college students’ training.

“Donations like this go a long way, they reduce cost and allow us to invest the money in better services to

our students. We are very thankful for Taylor Woodrow’s kind generosity and I do hope this is the beginning of a

lasting relationship with the college.”Evelyn Murray-Smith, Apprenticeship Manager, West Thames College Skills Centre

Our InnovationsFinding our future solutions, today.

The VINCI culture of innovation plays a key role in creating qualitative and cost-effective solutions, which truly supports our 1-2-3 strategy, and delivers long-term sustainability for us and our stakeholders.

Throughout our divisions, processes are in place to capture divisional innovation and share it.

This is also supported by a wider international emphasis of innovation throughout the VINCI group and the Global VINCI Innovation Awards, which is run every two years and provides a valuable view of innovation from across the globe.

As 2016 was in between awards years, we focused our efforts on disseminating previous years’ entries.

For example, the M1 J25-28 project’s innovative and more efficient process for scheduling activities on site through ‘Work Space Booking’, was successfully disseminated and adopted by a joint venture converting part of the M5 into a smart motorway; resulting in improved safety performance (over 1.1 million hours worked with no RIDDOR incidents) and productivity, to no financial cost of implementation. ECONOMIC Our Innovations

New IT Solution for Reducing Paper WasteDouble-sided printing, “Think before you print” logos and sustainability certified paper are long-established common practice for us. But how could we use technology and innovation to further reduce our environmental impact and promote paper saving behaviours?

The solution our IT team implemented for our Watford and Widnes offices is called ‘PaperCut’. This software effectively reduces the dependency on paper, as it:

• Prevents printing without using a swipe card or a pin number, effectively reducing wasted prints and avoids mixing different users’ printouts.

• Displays the cost of the print job, enabling the user to change colour and size to reduce cost and resources consumed, before it is sent to print.

• Offers ‘Follow Me’ printing, which saves time as prints can be picked up from any printer in the office.

Furthermore, it enables us to allocate accurate print costs per department or individuals, which will help to develop tailored improvement strategies.

“Using market leading IT solutions, this implementation reduces our print volumes in

line with our company’s policies on environment and ISO50001 Energy Management, whilst offering

a general reduction on print costs.”Ben Paddick, IT Director, VINCI Construction UK
