PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Dear Parents, Grandparents and Friends,

We hope you all spent some time celebrating or remembering your wonderful mothers last Sunday – a mother’s love lasts forever and is something to be cherished. Perhaps you were the recipient of a lovely gift from our Mothers’ Day Stall which was held last

Friday. We know you will join us in thanking the very special group of mothers led by Allison Salmon who coordinated this exciting shopping experience for our students!

Art of LeadershipAs part of our strategic planning for leadership development, 4 of our executive staff recently attended the second 3 day Art of Leadership seminar in the city (the first 3 days were completed during the holidays in January). This outstanding program involves the development of leadership skills to improve performance and team management, ultimately leading to improved student outcomes.

Strategies developed within the course will be utilised to ensure a strong collaborative process is fostered in all areas of decision making.

MMOLLast week all students who completed the 2 week Make Your Own Lunch Challenge were awarded a delicious fruit kebab made by a very special community member, Janine Ralston. Over 100 students were successful in completing the challenge – an amazing result from our 3 - 6 students and an indication of the program’s significance and strength. Well done to the Live Life Well @ School Committee!

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

NAPLANWe are currently half way through our NAPLAN online assessments for Years 3 and 5 students. This has been a challenging transition for our staff and students and we would like to acknowledge Dave Waters, Clare Hagon, Janayah Heazlewood, Greg Mawson, Robert Lawrenson and Laurinda Lomas for their efforts in ensuring our school was ready for this change in test delivery. We are hopeful that the new testing process will provide a more detailed representation of student performance.

Sydney North Dance Festival – Audition SuccessWe are very proud to announce that our Year 3/4, Senior Girls and Senior Boys Dance Groups have all successfully auditioned for the Sydney North Dance Festival. This is an acknowledgment of the outstanding work being done in the performing arts space at our school, being one of only a couple of schools to have 3 items accepted. Congratulations to Jack Tier, Charlotte Reddan and Leigh Evans-Bullock who choreographed these dances – excellent work!

Year 1 Strings Program Following significant research supporting the correlation between learning the violin and the strengthening of academic skills in literacy and numeracy, we have commenced a Year 1 Strings Program at Elanora Heights PS. All students in Year 1 will now have weekly violin lessons with our resident strings conductor, Mark Stevens. Students will learn basic violin skills and develop the ability to read music. We look forward to showcasing the work achieved by our Year 1 students later in the year.

Uniform OptionsAs the warmer weather seems to be continuing, we have extended the wearing of the summer uniform until the June long weekend. After this date (June 10) we would like to see all students in winter uniform. Please note, following discussion at the P & C meeting on Wednesday, all students are welcome to wear the grey long pants through the winter months should they choose to do so.

Visual Arts CampWe have had three students successful in their application for the 2019 Arts Alive - Visual Arts Camp. Evie V, Lucinda T and Ella F will be attending the program at the Avalon Recreation Centre on Wednesday 4 and Thursday 5 July. Congratulations girls!

Newly combined Band takes the stage! Our newly formed Senior Band played at both the Stage 2 & Stage 3 Assemblies last Monday, impressing the audience

with not only their level of performance, but also how quickly they have restructured themselves. A fabulous effort from Conductor Rachel and her students! We would also like to thank Rachel for all her work in the instrument storeroom this week – an enormous voluntary effort. Thank you Rachel.

Training Band also had their very first performance on Friday 10 May at the K-2 Assembly and delighted the audience with their excellent performance. It was hard to believe they have only had their instruments for a short time. Congratulations to Conductor Solly and his students! It is never too late to join our wonderful band program so please contact the office if you are interested.

Year 6 CampYear 6 have just returned from an incredible 3 day adventure, travelling to the historic Mogo Colonial Village on the south coast, visiting the Planetarium and Science Centre at Wollongong University and Minnamurra Rainforest on the way. While at the venue, the students experienced what life was like in the 1850s during the gold rush, including gold panning, making damper, learning some Aboriginal language and bushdancing. They finished with a walk around Mogo Zoo on the way home.

I would like to congratulate the students on their exemplary behaviour over the 3 days – at each venue they were commended on the respectful manner in which they interacted with venue staff and facilities. Well done Year 6 – you made the experience incredibly enjoyable for myself, Jono Rosconi, Charlotte Reddan and Hayley Doran. My thanks to our dedicated staff for accompanying the students; we are very grateful for your time and energy.

Have a great weekend and don’t forget to get your sausage sandwich when you come to vote.

Until next time.....

Leesa Martin Principal

. We had a fantastic turnout last Wednesday at this term’s first P&C Meeting. Each sub committee is running very efficiently and, if nothing else, the meetings are a chance to come together to give the broader community an opportunity to hear in summary what’s topical. If you have a particular interest or question send an email, we can direct this to the relevant sub-committee member for discussion.

It’s great to be with a group of people so committed to improving our children’s educational experiences but there is a shortage of volunteers to help the current social committee. So please email [email protected] to let them know what you can help with for our social event in Term 3. It’ll be here before we know it.

Thank you to Allison and all the helpers and wrappers for Mothers’ Day. It was absolutely priceless see-ing the joy and concentration on the children’s faces as they went ‘shopping’ for their special ladies.

For the diary, we are holding the Term 2 working bee next month on Saturday June 15. I’ve mentioned before that our grounds maintenance allocation is the same as any other school. The size and demands of our location are not taken into account so Andy needs a hand. The P&C plans to do one working bee each term because there is bound to be at least one a year that is rained out. If you can only make one in the year we can share it around. Make this term’s your one to attend.

The working bee runs from 1pm to 4pm. Children are welcome, and each will receive a mini merit for their efforts. We are so lucky our school has such a beautiful bush setting but this does mean a lot of maintenance is involved, so please come out and have a fun afternoon with other members of our school community.

PREMIER’S READING CHALLENGE What a fantastic effort by these students who have recently completed the PRC.

When your child hands in their 20 mini merits, please make sure thatthe mini merit on top has your child’s

first name and surname on it as it makes it very difficultwhen we have many children with the same first name and not one of the

20 mini merits has a surname on it.There may be occasions when we may not be able to work out who the child is

and won’t be able to issue the bronze award till your child comes looking for theirs.

Well done to our hundred happy chefs! These students all completed the Home Challenge for Make My Own Lunch, making their own school lunches and morning teas for a fortnight. Last week they each received a fruit kebab and their mini-merits. Another extra thank you to Janine Ralston for preparing the delicious kebabs.

Orange Fruito-Vego was enjoyed across the school as you can see here in 1SG.

EAT A EDIBLE ART FOR K-2Thursday May 30 and Friday May 31The LLW@S parent group is organising Eat a Rainbow – creating edible art – on Thursday May 30 and Friday May 31. Each child will participate in a discussion about the importance of eating a wide range of fruits and vegetables, create a picture with cut fruit and veg on a paper plate … and then eat it!

On Tuesday May 28 and Wednesday May 29, we will ask your child to bring one or more whole fruits or vegetables suitable to cut up for art and eating. Variety is the key to interesting creations, so think about more unusual shapes or colours. We will be encouraging children to taste something new. You might like to inspire your child by searching for “fruit and vegetable creations” on the internet.

These events are only possible with volunteers! Could you help?Could you …• cut up some fruit / veg at home on Wednesday night, to be returned on Thurs morning

• come to school on Thurs May 30 or Fri May 31 (9am-12:45pm) to cut up fruit & veg and prepare “rainbow” platters, or assist children with designing their edible art. Even helping for the session before recess or after recess would be greatly appreciated.

It’s easy, fun, worthwhile - and your child will love to see you!

Please contact Janine Ralston at [email protected] or 0404 053 140 if you are able to help.
