PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Dear Parents and Friends,

Band WorkshopLast Sunday I had the great pleasure of attending the entertaining Band Workshop Concert in our school hall. I was so impressed with how much progress our students have made in such a short period of time, particularly our Training Band, who have only had their instruments for 10 weeks! Our enviable band program is supported by so many parents and tutors who all helped out on the day and I would like to thank them most sincerely for their time.

I would also especially like to thank Mrs Bec Heather and Mrs Louise England for their organisation and coordination of the day’s workshops, along with our additional conductors, Mrs Jenny Power and Mrs Lyndal Perry. Well done, everyone!

Adolescent Wellbeing Project – Seeking Year 6 Interested ParentsThe Centre for Emotional Health at Macquarie University is conducting a project that aims to understand teenage social and emotional development.

The Risks to Adolescent Wellbeing (RAW) Project will start with 500 children in Year 6 and assess them every year throughout high school. The project will be the most detailed of its kind in the world.

The Peninsula Community of Schools (PCS) has been successful in securing 150 places in this project, with approximately 15 places available for each primary school. If you are interested in being involved, please contact the RAW Project on (02) 9850 4080 or [email protected]. More information on the project can be found at www.rawproject.com.au/. Recruitment closes in June 2017.

Year 6 CampOur happy campers returned from Canberra last night, filled with tales of their many adventures! This was a wonderful opportunity for our students to not only learn a great deal about our nation’s capital, but also to bond with their teachers and peers and develop their independence. I would like to thank our staff for taking time away from their own families to accompany our students: Ms Vicki Bosler, Mr Scott Reid, Ms Janayah Heazlewood and Mrs Sara Scullin.

School Blazers

I would like to thank our uniform shop coordinator, Mrs Sue Garrity, for her work in organising the gorgeous new blazers our student leadership team now have to wear for special occasions. I think you would all agree the students look very smart in this stylish addition to our school uniform. This photo was taken at our ANZAC service last Friday, with Mr John West, Hon Sec from Narrabeen RSL.

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

New Reports for 2017Over the past two terms our staff, led by Mr David Waters and Mrs Laurinda Lomas, have been developing a new report format which includes specific outcomes from NSW syllabus documents to give specific feedback about student progress to parents. It is hoped that this new style of reporting will provide parents with a better picture of what their child learns in each subject area, their application to work completed and perhaps a goal for further development.

We will be holding a meeting for all parents to view the new reports and hear more information about how they were developed prior to our P&C meeting on Wednesday 10th May at 6:30pm in the Library. We look forward to seeing you there.

NAPLAN – Years 3 & 5Students in Years 3 and 5 will sit their NAPLAN assessments in Language Conventions, Writing, Reading and Numeracy next week from Tuesday to Thursday. As stated previously, this is a point in time assessment of student progress which schools use to aid in their decision making, and does not require any special preparation at home. Preparation for the assessment days should be no different to any other school day – encouraging an early bed time and a healthy breakfast will ensure your child has every opportunity to approach the ssessments in a positive manner.

Tourette Syndrome Awareness Week - 7th-13th MayDid you know that Tourette Syndrome (TS) is a neurological disorder which is prevalent in approximately 1 in 100 children? It most often begins between the ages of 2 and 21, and lasts throughout life. TS is characterised by rapid, repetitive and involuntary muscle movements and vocalisations called ‘tics’ and may involve learning or behavioural difficulties, including Obsessive Compulsive Disorder and Attention Deficit (Hyperactivity) Disorder. Often the behavioural difficulties are present long before the tics begin, leading to children being misdiagnosed and misunderstood.

Tics can present in many forms, with some common examples including: eye blinking, head jerking, shoulder shrugging, facial grimaces, throat-clearing, squealing, sniffing, gulping, grunting, tongue-clicking, jumping, touching other people or things, twirling about, repetitive movement of the torso or limbs, self-injurious actions, uttering words or phrases and repetition of words, phrases or syllables.

It is important that people with Tourette Syndrome are supported in a positive manner to ensure they are given every opportunity for success. The Tourette Syndrome Association of Australia are a voluntary and non-profit organisation who provide parent advocacy and other services to help families cope with problems that may occur with TS. If you would like to find out more information please see their website at www.tourette.org.au.

And finally I would like to congratulate Tom C (Yr 6) and Millie A (Yr 6 2016) who were both part of the Manly Little League team who won the State Titles in the April school holidays. The team went through the tournament undefeated across four days of play. What a great achievement - well done!

Until next time,

STEWART HOUSE DONATION DRIVE 2017 Stewart House Donation Drive envelopes will be sent home on Monday 8th May and are to be returned to the class teacher NO LATER than Friday 19th May.

Every year 1,800 public school children attend the safe haven of Stewart House next to Curl Curl beach at no cost to their parents or carers. During a 12 day stay they are provided with dental, optical, hearing and medical screening and treatment.

Children participate in educational programs and excursions designed to develop their social and emotional skills, build self-esteem and improve their overall well-being.

This experience provides children with a much needed break from their current circumstance. Our children are inspired to see beyond the present and to have real hope and positive aspirations for their future.

Please donate to this valuable charity.

..... And the raffle winners are…..

Congratulations to our highest ticket seller Zara B from KB. Zara will receive an iPad for her efforts. In second place and earning the ‘Principal for a Day’ experience was Max B from 2Y, while Mikayla R from KB took out our third prize of movie money. These prizes will be awarded at an upcoming assembly.

The class with the most tickets sold was Miss Widman’s. 3B will receive an icy pole and rainbow fruit platter from the canteen. The first class to return all of their tickets was KB - Miss Powell. They will receive an icy pole each.

The P&C are waiting for final fundraising totals from Rotary, but it looks like our efforts will total about $12,000. This is an enormous effort from our community – about $1,000 higher than last year - and will be a fantastic springboard to improve our playground.

Ro and her many helpers have been getting presents ready for the Mother’s Day stall next Friday morning at the school. Thank you to all those quiet achievers.

Do you know a DJ who could volunteer their time for our school discos? Our discos are being held on Thursday 1st June and Thursday 9th November starting at 5:30pm. In the past a school parent has been able to assist with DJ’ing. Unfortunately we aren’t so fortunate this year so if you think you can help, please contact Ro on [email protected]. Hiring someone exter-nal is very expensive so running these events for the kids becomes marginal at best…maybe you know someone who could help?

Thank you to all of our volunteers, new and old, who have contributed to the canteen last term. From a personal perspective, I always get such a delight out of contributing to the school and meeting other people from our community. One piece of housekeeping for our volunteers – please make sure you have completed your 100 point identification check with the office, or completed a Working With Children check that has been sighted by the office. Also remember to sign in at the office at the beginning and end of your canteen shift. Further information can be found near the sign-in books at the office.

Meet with us in week 4 on Wednesday 17th May at 7:15pm at the Racquet Bar. Our team will be discussing the new NSW Healthy School Canteen Strategy, our menu and upcoming events at the school. Everyone is welcome.

Don’t our new lunch tubs look great! They also make sorting lunch orders into classes an easier task.

Dear Parent,We would like to invite you and your child to join The RAW Project

We all remember our teenage years – some of us with fondness and others with horror. The adolescent period is one of dramatic change. During this time, teens have to negotiate powerful peer pressures, begin to date, start to separate from their parents, deal with wild hormonal storms, and start to contemplate their future. Not surprisingly, the teenage period is the time when the vast majority of mental health problems first emerge.

But not all is doom. The teenage years are also the time when leaders are born; when future doctors, lawyers, and scientists start their journeys; and when some of our strongest friendships are formed. But we need much more information.

The central aim of the RAW Project is to understand the forces that shape teenage social and emotional development, and with the help of you and your child, find the key to building a stronger and more produc-tive society.

Benefits of being involved include $100, a wellbeing assessment for your child, and a “thank you pack” each year you take part in the project as well as opportunities to be involved in competitions and receive prizes throughout the year.

We are currently recruiting Year 6 students up until mid-to-late June. For more information, please read through the attached flyer and consult the contact information.

Kind regards,The RAW Team
