Who we took our name from

• Johann Joachim Becher (6 May 1635 – October 1682) was a German physician, alchemist, precursor of chemistry, scholar and adventurer, best known for his development of the phlogiston theory of combustion, and his advancement of Austrian cameralism.

• He was born in Speyer. His father, a Lutheran minister, died while he was a child, leaving a widow and three children. At the age of thirteen Becher found himself responsible not only for his own support but also for that of his mother and brothers. He learned and practiced several small handicrafts, and devoted his nights to study of the most miscellaneous description and earned a pittance by teaching. He published his first book at the age of 19, but there were more to come.

A day at our school

our break area our classroom

• Actually I get to school by train, but I have too much to carry today, because we are sewing some dresses for us right now, so I’m coming by car.

• At school I meet my classmates, who have brought their self made dresses, too. We can’t keep on sewing right now, because we first have to do our theoretical lessons. First we have to learn something about the different drapery and their qualities. After that we are going to the PC room and learn how to create some cuts.

• We have a fifteen minute break during which have to go out onto the schoolyard, we are allowed to have a lot of fun and we can go to the “SchuKi”, where we can buy some food, coffee and sweets.

• The education is going on. Now we are staying in the sewing machine rooms for the next few hours. Most of the time we have a lot of fun, because we have a very good relationship between students and teachers. The atmosphere in our class is very good. Sometimes the sewing time is stressful, because we have to finish our stuff for the following fashion show.

our plainseamer our cutting area

• Two or three times a week our school finishes at 3pm, but that’s actually no problem, because we have so much fun all day long…

• Today we are going to Betty Barclay to buy some drapery for our following projects. But this doesn’t happen very often, only once in two months. The drapery is quite cheap for us, because we are students. Then it’s time for going home. At home everyone has to practice, what we have done at school today
