Our Purpose Tonight

• Share Spanish/Chinese Course Options for 11th and 12th Grade

We Need to Encourage All of Our Students to Tackle High Level Opportunities and to

Believe in Themselves.

High School immersion graduates should be able to

pursue post-secondary studies in their second

language.

Focus: Developing students who are culturally competent and communicatively proficient in all communicative areas.

- Read, comprehend, and analyze authentic texts - Write about a variety of topics w/ precision and detail,

control of grammar, and vocabulary- Speak with ease, confidence, and competence- Listen, comprehend, and engage with other speakers

Immersion AP Chinese/Spanish Language & Culture

- Analysis of authentic resources and literature related to the six AP themes

- Writing: format, organization, style, audience

- Student presentations and discussions

- AP exam preparation- Year long course, weighted grade

This course is designed to work on student speaking and writing abilities through reaction to readings, films, cultural elements, and current events.

Introduction to Hispanic Linguistics & CultureSpanish immersion

Students will study the nature of language, the relationship between

language and culture, and how we use language to create meaning.

- Systems of sound, meaning, phrasing and sentence structure

- 1st and 2nd language acquisition

- Spanish language regional variations

- Social and cultural impacts of language

Intro to Chinese Politics• Current political issues and diplomatic solutions• Model United Nations• 1 semester course (.5 elective)

This course aims to encourage students to: • Understand the forces and factors influencing

politics in China.• Enhance their knowledge of China by exploring

central themes and issues. • Analyze and evaluate how political leaders and

institutions have shaped politics in China.

• Current political issues and diplomatic solutions• Model United Nations• 1 semester course (.5 elective)

This course aims to encourage students to: • Understand struggles for democracy,

representative institutions, and development.• Enhance their knowledge of Latin American

countries by exploring central themes and issues. • Analyze and evaluate how political dynamics,

institutions, and different organizations have shaped politics in Latin America.

Why Bilingual IB Diploma?

● Opportunity to showcase abilities in more than 1 language

● A rare opportunity -only 28%-of the IB Diplomas awarded

were Bilingual (versus Standard)

● Students who are bilingual with prior academic knowledge of 2 or

more languages are more likely to pursue the IBBD

● Can be advantageous for non-native speakers applying to study at

universities who require evidence of proficiency in the language of

instruction

Bilingual SealWhat is the Bilingual and Multilingual Seal?

● State of Minnesota passed legislation in June 2015● Recognizes student proficiency in multiple languages

How and when do I achieve a seal?● Gold Bilingual Seal - Intermediate High (STAMP-6, AP-4)● Platinum Bilingual Seal - Advanced Low (STAMP-7, AP-5)● Must also fulfill MN State English Language Arts requirements● Receive upon graduation - will appear on transcript● MnSCU students awarded college credit

VANTAGE - Options for Immersion

Immersion students will have the opportunity to complete the semester-long company projects in the target language in two of the VANTAGE strands.
