Looking back at your preliminary task,

what do you feel you have learnt in the

The 180 degree ruleWe opened our opening sequence with a two shot of two girls having a conversation but other than this, there is no dialogue in our opening title sequence. Also, whilst our lead is moving through the house, we used entirely front on or back on tracking shots. This gave us no opportunity to demonstrate the 180 degree rule or any shot/reverse shot sequences.

Match on ActionIn our first edit for our preliminary exercise, the first shot of Gopesh entering the scene featured just over a second of empty corridor. Whilst at first this did not seem like an issue, we later realised that having him walk straight in, match on action, the video was much more professional and enticing. Because of this, each shot in our full product features match on action which helps takeaway from the viewer noticing the edit but also creates a continuous flow of action.

ContinuityIn our preliminary exercise we had two people in one empty room. The only issue with continuity we actually corrected during the shoot by reshooting. With the Opening title sequence we had a whole house dressed as a party and over 50 extras and so we had the set photographed in order to ensure everything stayed in position as well as two plans for the extras of where they were to stand. This all ensured we didn’t have any issues with continuity and is a great example of us learning from our mistaken the preliminary.

This was our plan of extra’s positioning using colour coding based on who could be late and so to ensure they wouldn’t join the shoot later and names being taken outside for characters who either had specific actions or couldn’t been in the room due to them having been filmed leaving.

TrackingOne of the shots we re-used from our preliminary was of tracking a character down a corridor. The change we made from the preliminary was to use a track and dolly to give a more cinematic & professional touch as well as allowing us to compare the shot with one done freehand later when the characters are drunk.

Over the Shoulder

We learnt from our preliminary that an over the shoulder shot can really help bring you into the action of a scene. Unfortunately we had Gopesh moving, being tracked over the shoulder which came across as gimmicky. We decided that for our full product we would only use it when stationary.
