Our Plan About Hate Crime
in Hertfordshire 2017 to 2020
Please tell us what you think
2
This plan was made by:
The Police and Crime Commissioner for Hertfordshire.
His name is David Lloyd. He makes sure that the police in Hertfordshire do the best job they can.
Hertfordshire County Council This plan is about hate crime in Hertfordshire and what we will do about it. A hate crime is when someone bullies or hurts someone because they don’t like who they are.
What is this plan about?
3
For example, someone may hurt a person or call them names because they are disabled. Or they may hurt or upset a person because of:
the person’s religion. This is to do with what they believe in and think about the world
who the person may want a relationship with. For example, someone may be attracted to men, women or both
what the person looks like or where they are from
whether the person is a man, woman or something else. And whether they have changed this since they were born
.
4
We think it is very wrong for someone to be hurt or bullied because of who they are. Everyone should be safe from hate or violence. In 2016 a report was made about hate crime in Hertfordshire. In 2016 the Government also made a big plan about hate crime. This plan tells you what we will do in Hertfordshire to:
deal with hate crime
help people know what hate crime is and what to do if it happens
give people better support if hate crime happens to them
5
We want to know what you think of this plan. There are some questions for you to answer in this booklet. Please answer them if you can. Please tell us by…30th June 2017

We will work to:
stop hate crime from happening
tell people what hate crime is and why it is bad
help people know how to speak up about hate crime
help people trust that something will be done about it
The main things we will work on
7
We will work to:
make sure that something is done about hate crime For example, make sure that people who do hate crime go to court
make sure that people get good support if hate crime happens to them
make sure that people can have a say in what happens
get good information about hate crime in Hertfordshire

We have set up a group of people to work on this plan. They will check how it is working and what needs to change. Do you agree with the main things we will work on? This is on pages 5 to 6.
Yes Some of them No There is a chance for you to say more later on.
Question for you to answer
9
1. Working to stop hate crime We will help more people know about hate crime and what to do if it happens.
This means hate crime that happens on the internet as well. We will do this in lots of ways. For example, through:
Facebook, the radio, posters and adverts
talking to schools
giving training to the police and other organisations
More about what we will do

We hope that this will help more people speak up about hate crime. Do you agree with the things we plan to do here?
Yes Some of them No
2. Doing something about hate crime We will make sure that there are other organisations that people can talk to about hate crime. We will show how many people who do hate crime go to court. This will show people that something is done about hate crime.
Question for you to answer
11
We will do more about hate crime that happens:
on transport
in taxis
in shops and places that are open at night
For example, more taxis could have cameras in them to help keep drivers safe.
We will work with other organisations to:
help more hate crime cases go to court
help people who do hate crime to stop doing it in the future
Do you agree with the things we plan to do here?
Yes Some of them No
Question for you to answer

3. Better support for people if hate crime happens to them
We will make sure that people get better support if hate crime happens to them. For example: We will make sure there are enough Hate Crime Officers. They are police officers who know a lot about hate crime. They can help people if hate crime happens to them. We will make sure that more people get support from the Beacon Victim Care Centre. The Beacon Victim Care Centre can support people if hate crime happens to them.
13
Some people do not feel happy with the support they get from the police about hate crime. We will work to change this. We will look at other ways to solve hate crime. We will ask people what they want. For example, some people may want to meet the person who hurt them to tell them how they feel. Do you agree with the things we plan to do here?
Yes Some of them No

4. Learning about hate crime We will find out more about:
