також продаватиметься все нелюхідне для цього, тому хто хоче поповнити свій запас або розпочати нове захоплення то буде мати таку можливість.

Для тих, хто хоче навчитися писати писанки, Український центр буде проводити уроки найближчим часом.

РІЧНІ ЗАГАЛЬНІ ЗБОРИ

Загальні збори нашої парафії відбудуться у неділю 24го лютого.

Дальші інформації будуть подані у листі, який буде висланий поштою кожному парафіянину. Всі звіти для річних зборів повинні бути подані до 9 лютого включно

Парафіяльна управа подає до відома, що членські вкладки працюючим - по $165 за особу, а пенсіонерам - по $115 за

особу. Хто ще не заплатив членські вкладки, а має бажання заплатити їх, просимо зробити це до 17-го лютого.

ТОВАРИСЬКА ЗУСТРІЧ ПІД ЧАС КАВИ.

Нам потрібні добровольці. Сестрицтво має в наявності тарілки, чашки, столові прилади та серветки. Ми також забезпечуємо каву, чай, вершки, цукор та масло. Добровольцям не потрібно приносити ці речі.

Ласкаво Запрошуємо всіх після Служби Божої до парафіяльної залі на солодощі, каву і товариство. Так відбуватиметься кожної неділі після Святої Літургії, якщо не буде якихось

поминальних чи парафіяльних обідів. Дякуємо всім тим хто готував, або буде готувати цю перекуску

СТРІТЕННЯ ГОСПОДНЄ

“Стрітення” – слово давньослов’янське, яке означає “зустріч”.

Зустріч праведного Симеона – з Господом, людини – з Богом, Старого Завіту – з Новим. Це свято нашої зустрічі з Господом Ісусом Христом. У сороковий день після Різдва Христового

Мати Божа – Пречиста Діва Марія за старозавітнім звичаєм принесла Своє Божественне Дитя до храму. Представлення Ісуса Христа в єрусалимському храмі відбулось, тому що

Господь наказав людям, щоб перший народжений син належав йому. “Освяти Мені кожного первістка, який розкриває всяке лоно між синами Ізраїлевими…” (Вих. 13: 2). На цей час у

храмі був старець Симеон. А про даного старця Святе Писання говорить, що він був праведний й побожний, а до всього цього, через його благочестиве життя сам Святий Дух

провадив його. Святий Дух відкрив йому, що він не зазнає смерті аж поки не побачить Господа. Він впізнав Христа Спасителя, взяв Його на свої руки і промовив молитву, яку ми

й донині повторюємо: “Нині відпускаєш раба Твого, Владико...”. При цьому була присутня пророчиця Анна, яка теж прославляла Бога і говорила про Спасителя всім, хто чекав визволення в Єрусалимі. Ось і ми зустрічаємо Господа з тією ж

глибокою і вдячною радістю, з якою Симеон Богоприїмець Його тримав на своїх руках і бачив у Ньому звершення всіх давніх пророцтв про те, що настане день, коли ворожнеча між

людиною й Богом прийде до кінця, коли Сам Бог зійде до нас тілом як наш Спаситель, примирюючи нас Своїм втіленням, Своїм життям, Своїм вченням і Своєю смертю на хресті з Богом

нашим і Отцем. Людина зустрічається з Богом у молитві, в радості, у стражданні й хворобах, біля нужденного й, особливо, у Таїнстві Святого Причастя. Проте часто буває, що

ми не помічаємо, не впізнаємо Бога, проходимо повз Нього. Дуже часто ми задаємо запитання: чому Господь покидає нас у скрутну хвилину? На це запитання пригадується коротка

історія, коли душа померлої людини стала перед Богом і в свідомості промайнуло багато моментів з життя. Вона побачила сліди на піску. В той момент, коли їй було добре, то

було дві пари, а коли скрутна хвилина – одна. Ось ця людина запитала чому Господь покинув її в цю хвилину, а Господь відповів, що ніс її в той момент на руках. У чому ж причина,

чому так трапляється? Причин тут багато, і вони різні, але найчастіше – це наша сердечна нечистота, що вкриває завісою

наші духовні очі, й ми не можемо бачити те, що має бути очевидним. “Блаженні чисті серцем, бо вони Бога побачать”, — говорить Сам Господь (Мф. 5: 8). Чистота серця – це перше і

найнеобхідніше, що допомагає нам бачити Бога, наблизитися до Нього і жити з Ним і в Ньому. Ось чому так часто Свята Церква від імені всіх і за всіх нас повторює у своїх молитвах:

“Сердце чисте створи в мені, Боже, і духа праведного віднови в нутрі моєму” (Пс. 50: 12). Можливостей зустрітися з Богом безліч. Про цю неминучу зустріч треба пам’ятати, до неї треба

готуватись. Остання зустріч не залежить від нашого бажання: можна в цьому світі свідомо чи несвідомо зневажати зустрічами з Богом, відкидати їх, але та, остання, зустріч не

залежить ані від нашого бажання, ані від нашої готовності. Господи! Сподоби нас почути милостиве Твоє слово: “Прийдіть, благословенні Отця Мого, успадкуйте Царство, уготоване вам від створення світу” (Мф. 25: 34). Амінь.

Я ДО ЦЕРКВИ – БІЛЬШЕ НІ НОГОЮ

Якось один юнак підійшов до священика і сказав: – Я до

церкви – більше ні ногою! Священик запитав: – Чому? На що той пояснив: –

Я спостерігав за людьми, які приходять до церкви. Ті

поводяться не найкращим чином: заглядають у телефони під час богослужіння, осуджують ближніх в церкві. І це ще не повний перелік…

Священик відповів йому: – Гаразд, можеш більше не приходити до церкви. Але перед цим зроби одну річ, яку я тебе попрошу: обійди довкола церкви тричі зі повною

склянкою води в руках. Ти повинен не розлити ні краплини. Якщо виконаєш це завдання – зробиш те, що хочеш.

Хлопчина радо погодився: він був переконаним, що

заввиграшки впорається з дорученням духовного отця. Він справді обійшов церкву тричі, як просив його отець. Після закінчення пішов доповідати до священика.

Останній спитав: – Коли ти проходив через церкву, ти бачив, як інші люди пліткують? Хлопець відповів: – Ні. – А як вони сидять в смартфонах спостерігав? – Також ні. – А знаєш чому ти всього не зауважив? – Ні – відрік той. – Тому, що ти

зосередився на склянці й на тому, щоб не розлити рідину.

В нашому житті відбувається те саме: якщо очі наші спрямовані на нашого Господа Ісуса Христа, то часу бачити

чужі прогріхи вже не залишається

COMMUNITY OUTREACH:

Thank you to all who have donated food and clothing these past months. We have donated them to Sharing and Caring Hands,

because FOCUS has lost their lease and looking for a new place. Once they are re-established we will be donating to them.

WE ARE STILL GATHERING FOOD AND CLOTHING for the

FOCUS food and clothing shelves for the homeless. FOCUS is an Orthodox charity sponsored by the Pan-Orthodox community that provides meals, food, clothes and work for those in need.

There are two (2) boxes in the hall - for food and clothes. Please donate only non-perishable food such as canned goods or boxed staples such as rice, noodles, cereals, etc. All Food Should Be

Within the Expiration Dates Otherwise It Will Be Thrown Away.

Clothing Should Be Either New or Gently Used. Currently we are collecting winter clothing. You can also donate linens and

household supplies. YOUR SUPPORT IS GREATLY APPRECIATED.

LOOKING AHEAD

ST. OLGA’S SISTERHOOD

The Sisterhood will hold its meeting every FIRST (1st) SUNDAY OF THE MONTH AT 12:30 P.M. AFTER LITURGY IN THE CHURCH HALL.

If you are not currently a member, please consider joining us for fellowship with people you have grown up with, fun and working together for the parish that provided our parents and us as youths with sustenance, fellowship, and a relationship with the Ukrainian Orthodox church.

CHURCH BOARD MEETING

The Board meetings are scheduled for EVERY SECOND (2ND) SUNDAY OF THE MONTH AT 12:30 P.M. AFTER LITURGY IN THE CHURCH HALL.

PARISH ANNUAL MEETING WILL BE HELD SUNDAY, FEB. 25TH.

All parishioners are urged to attend. Additional information will be sent in a separate letter. Annual reports are due February 9th for review and printing.

MEMBERSHIP DUES:

Membership dues for working people are $165 per person and $115 per person of retired. Any members who hasn’t paid their

dues for this year, and would like to do so, is encouraged to settle their account before the Annual Meeting.

FELLOWSHIP SOCIAL HOUR

We invite everyone to join us for a fellowship hour on Friday, February 22ndth at 6:00 pm for good food, cocktails, wine and meeting old friends and making new friends. This will be the last

ATTENTION – ALL PYSANKY WRITERS

Catholic Palm Sunday will be April 14, 2019. Please start to work

on Pysanky as soon as possible for our annual Pysanky and Bake Sale. We need all kinds of pysanky – from very simple to intricate. Your contributions will be very much appreciated. Thank You.

PYSANKY KICK-OFF PARTY

Saturday, February 1, 2019: There will be a kick-off party for all ages for people who want to get in the mood and start making

pysanky for Easter. Lunch will be served and supplies will be provided (dyes, wax, kistkas). The Ukrainian Gift shop will also have supplies available for sale for anyone who wants to resupply

their stock or begin a new hobby and start writing pysanky.

For those who want to learn how to make pysanky, the Ukrainian Center will be holding lessons in the near future.

MALANKA

The annual Malanka was held on January 12th 2019. It was a big

success and we received around $3,800.00. The Ukrainian Village Band performed and a good time was had by everyone.

FELLOWSHIP COFFEE HOUR –

Everyone is invited to the church hall each Sunday after Liturgy for refreshments and fellowship with exception on the Sundays when

memorial services or church dinners are planned. If you want to volunteer to host a coffee hour you may sign up on the chart by the kitchen in the Parish Hall. Many thanks to those who have

volunteered in the past and to those who will volunteer to host future coffee hours.

We need volunteers to man and prepare the Coffee hour after

the services. Men and women can both participate in volunteering for this very important service, since it provides fellowship for all parish members to get together and share with each other.

Sisterhood will provide plates, cups, flatware and napkins. We are also providing coffee, tea, cream and sugar and butter. Volunteers do not need to provide these items

MEETING OF OUR LORD IN THE TEMPLE

On February 15th the Church celebrates the great feast of The

Meeting of our Lord in the Temple. The Gospel lesson for that day relates how the mother of Jesus brought Him to the temple, as was the custom and requirement under the God-given Law of

Moses, of Israel (Exodus 13:2, 12; Leviticus 12:2-8). When the righteous Simeon, who received Christ in his arms at the temple, saw the child, he knew immediately that this was the Redeemer

promised by all of Israel’s prophecies, for the elder was inspired by the Holy Spirit (Luke 2:26-27). Being inspired, he himself uttered prophetic words which form the hymn sung or chanted at the end

of every Vespers service: “Lord, now lettest Thou Thy servant depart in peace, according to Thy word; for mine eyes have seen Thy salvation which Thou hast prepared before the face of Thy people, a light to lighten the gentiles, and the glory of Thy people Israel” (Luke 2:29-32).

God literally entered the world, into time and history. He was

physically present in the midst of His people, His creatures whom He loves. Our Lord took on human nature in order to reconcile unto Himself, man who had strayed far from the Source of his life.

In taking on the “form of a servant” God, at the same time, in the

Person of Christ, fulfilled every requirement of the Law that He Himself had given to His people through Moses. He demonstrated, thereby, that everything that had happened in Israel’s history

could not be described merely as a succession of unrelated events. Rather this was a history with a definite goal: the salvation of mankind. He identified Himself as the Director of that history and

fulfilled its expectation.

To this day, all of the Church’s celebrations, no matter what the event commemorated may be, whether in the life of Christ, of the

Theotokos, or of the saints, all are celebrations of Christ and the establishment on earth of the Kingdom of His presence. He initiated this Kingdom and promised its ultimate realization. And

now, just as the Old Israel had awaited the beginning of God’s Kingdom, the New Israel (the Church) awaits the Second and Glorious Coming of Christ and the fullness of His Kingdom,

revealed.

So our lives vacillate, back and forth, between the assurance of salvation and indifference, between moments of real joy because

we know that God is with us, and moments of boredom because we cannot give ourselves totally over to Him.

Every Christian celebration reaches its climax in the Divine Liturgy

for the feast. In this sacred work, when God’s people assemble in His name, we actually become participants in the Heavenly Kingdom to come. We are as literally present with Christ in His

future Kingdom as the Apostles were with Him at the Last Supper. So the Kingdom is initiated among us and we enjoy it before our time, by anticipation. This is what every Eucharist is; this is what

our feasts and celebrations are all about, and that is why the Eucharist is the very center of all of them.

We continually orient our lives towards everyday pursuits, often

living as though we had never experienced this divine reality. That is why repentance and penitential seasons are in order. That is why in approximately one month we will enter the Great Fast or Lent during which time we are exhorted to repent of our sins.

What is important for us Christians is that we have really “seen the True Light, received the Heavenly Spirit, found the true faith” in this experience of the Kingdom of God. The question we must all

ask ourselves sincerely, however, is “what are we like when we return into this world after this Heavenly experience?

I WILL NEVER STEP INTO A CHURCH AGAIN!!

A youngster approached the priest and stated “I will never step

into a church again. The astonished priest asked him “Why?”

The youngster replied, “I noticed the behavior of those who come to church, and they don’t behave with the best of intentions.

Some of them look at their cell phones during the service; others gossip and criticize parish members and that isn’t even the beginning of their behavior.”

The priest answered him, “Fine, you can never come to church again, but before you go, I would like you to do something for me.” “What?” said the youngster. “Go around the church with a

glass of water three times. Do not spill even one drop. If you complete this assignment, you can do anything you want.

The youngster agreed. He was positive he could fulfill the priest’s

assignment with no problem. He went around the church three times with a glass of water, not spilling a drop and went to report to the priest.

The priest asked him, “When you were walking around the church, did you notice people gossiping?” “No” said the youngster. “How about them checking out their smartphones?” “No” said the youngster. “Do you know why you didn’t notice this stuff, because

you were concentrating so hard on the glass of water that you did not have time to notice other people’s behavior.”

In our lives we encounter the same thing. If our eyes and minds

are concentrated on our Lord, Jesus Christ, then we will not have time to notice other’s sins.

WHAT GOOD THING MUST WE DO TO GET ETERNAL LIFE?

Within our Ukrainian Orthodox parishes in this country we find so

many that have parents, grandparents; or both, who have immigrated to the United States. They came to a land they lovingly called America the beautiful and America the richest

nation on earth. They passed down to their children and grandchildren their strong work ethic, that in order to be successful; you must work hard and earn it yourself. Many of us

consider ourselves financially better off than what our parents and grandparents were and that we truly are proud to be living in the richest nation on earth. While this may be true, we must be careful in our thinking that we do not “build” ourselves up too

much. We must be careful and not get too caught up in “ourselves” and proud of the fact that we have accumulated so many “riches” on this earth. If we do, we need to remember the

Gospel lesson this week regarding the rich man and the Kingdom of Heaven.

As Christians we are called to be Christ-like people who are

expected to follow the Commandments not to steal, or bear false witness, or defraud anyone, etc. Some individuals think that just because they are Christians and “religious,” this will get them into

Heaven. At times, isn’t this true of ourselves? We sometimes think that just because our yearly church dues are paid up and we are in good financial standing that this automatically means that we

are a member of the Heavenly citizenship. Furthermore, we think that if we learn the catechism or we have been baptized and

attended Sunday school as a youth, or if we have given our time in the food projects and worked the bake sales and festivals; that

surely we will get to Heaven.

In the Gospel lesson we read that when the rich man told Jesus that he'd kept the Commandments since his youth, Jesus looked at

the man and loved him. The implication was that Jesus loved this man for his sincerity as well as for his good deeds. Then came the turning point of the lesson: Jesus explains that the rich man lacks

one thing in order to get eternal life: "Go, sell what you own, and give your money to the poor, and you will have treasure in Heaven; then come, follow Me."

The rich man is shocked. We may be shocked as well. "What!" we might be thinking. "Sell everything we own? That's what's required to follow in Jesus' footsteps? Really? How can we possibly do that?

Can't we just keep our wealth, but make sure that we are following all of the 10 Commandments all the time?" After reading the Gospel lesson further, we know what the man ended up doing. He went away: "He...went away grieving, for he had many

possessions." He didn't follow Jesus.

At the end of the Gospel lesson, beyond the point where Jesus explains that, "It's easier for a camel to go through the eye of a

needle than for someone who is rich to enter the Kingdom of God," the Disciples challenge Jesus at this point, asking who then can actually be saved. Jesus responds by saying, "With man it is

impossible, but not for God; for God all things are possible." Here it must be emphasized that God is love and that Jesus came with a special message of love. He lovingly paid the price for our

salvation so that we may get eternal life.

Earlier in the Gospel lesson, Jesus had looked at the rich man and loved him. Not just for what the man had done, but for what he

was trying to do. Presumably Jesus already knew that this man wasn't ready to sell everything and follow Him. Jesus loves him anyway. The rich man had not gone away angry, like many others

who didn't like Jesus' answers throughout the New Testament. The young rich man had gone away sad. He was sad because he knew he was putting his own accumulated wealth before God. The

man not only had money—there is nothing wrong with having

money—but he loved it; and he loved it so much that it prevented him, at least at this moment, from entering into the kingdom of

the Heaven.

The rich man had come to the right person, asked the right question, got the right answer; but ultimately made the wrong

decision. That is true. So we need to ask ourselves, that even for one moment, do we think we can get to Heaven by the “good” things that we do. The answer is “No!” We must remember this

Gospel lesson and recall this rich man and his encounter with the Lord Jesus. We must understand and know that no man can get to Heaven by the things that he does or has “accumulated” in this

life. We must examine our own mind and conscience and our hearts. We must acknowledge our own sinfulness and dependence on all of the things we gathered for ourselves. Then we must be

thankful for the free gift of salvation that we have received that comes by virtue of the expiating work that our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ accomplished on the cross for us. We might ask ourselves who then can be saved and receive salvation? We can

be saved. We can hopefully find our salvation. We may not fully understand and comprehend this because our “riches” are preventing us from understanding. This is when our Lord spoke

that, “By God’s grace, what seems impossible to us, is possible with Him."

SIGN TOMOS FOR UKRAINE’S ORTHODOX CHURCH On January 9, in Istanbul, all members of the Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate signed a tomos of autocephaly of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine.

"Today, during the meeting of the Holy Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, its members signed the text of tomos of autocephaly of the united Orthodox Church of Ukraine," the press service of the Ecumenical Patriarchate said.

As reported, on January 5, Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew signed a tomos of autocephaly of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine.

On January 6, the ceremony to hand over the tomos of autocephaly to the united Orthodox Church of Ukraine took place at the Patriarchal Church of St. George in Istanbul. Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew gave the document to Metropolitan of Kyiv and All Ukraine Epiphanius.

In Ukraine, the tomos of autocephaly for the first time was exhibited to the public during a liturgy in St. Sophia Cathedral on Christmas Day, January 7
